10 years ago I made a short documentary about my grandfather who was 80 at the time and still cycling everyday. The video got a lot of attention and was even Staff Picked by Vimeo!
This was my first proper short documentary and of course it was made with limited gear, experience and budget.
Fortunately my grandfather is still with us and very much cycling almost as often as before so I wanted to revisit this idea and create a new documentary for his 90th.
The plan was not to create a copy of the original one of course but to shoot this with a bigger crew and create a new documentary with a different angle and stronger visual style, which I think we achieved!
For this one I also wanted to include some of his brothers and friends and give the opportunity to them to express what they feel about my grandfather.
This is probably my most personal and important project to date due to how close I am to the subject but also since I was directing and not covering every single aspect of the project as I am more used to.
It was a great collaborative experience to be able to bring in talented and close friends like Alex and Clement which elevated the production value of this documentary and of course the final result.
This documentary would have not been possible without the amazing support from Artlist and Filmconvert, and would have not looked as good without the support of DZOFILM and Nanlite.
BTS and cinematography breakdown videos coming soon!
Shot on the BMPCC6K and 6K Pro in July 2023, in the South West of France.
(Earphones recommended)
Let me know if you have any questions :).
Cheers,
Flo

This is great. BlackMagic 👍 Send this to Rapha
@@TheMikeBernard Thank you!! Haha I might send it ☺️
This so well done 👍🏻
Srsly, this documentary is amazing! The people, the vibe and the last scene with the sunset over the flower field *chefs kiss*
I am a 76 year old cyclist and found your grandfather to be very inspirational. As a mature cyclist and athlete I sometimes feel lonely.
As a cyclist I’ve always been more inspired by the humanity than the results. To those who understand the passion will understand its meaning. Beautiful film, beautiful family.
Thank you so much for watching and for your comment :)
Show, estou tentando chegar lá tbm com o ciclismo
Beautifully stated. Sure, there are some jerks out there, but I've been lucky to find a majority of us are great humans who strive to lift one another up rather than tear one another down. It's almost romantic how people help people in the cycling community; it's a very special thing to witness and experience.
Couldn't agree more. Thx - well put
I do feel that pasión.
No words. THANK YOU
LOVE BLESS
I am a 73-year-old mountain biker and ride two or three times a week. I found this film, very motivating and emotionally uplifting. I will keep cycling until I am no longer physically able and pray that may not be for many more years.
@lawrencekennedy1123 Keep on riding, keep safe and keep well.
I wish that you can be..emtb will make you riding easy.
Ja mam 67 i śmigam codziennie, i będę tak długo śmigał aż spadne z roweru i się nie podniosę.
Im 63, just bought an e-mtb (giant fully), first ebike in my life. Its not because of the age but you can drive longer and more often in the mountains. In my case, Alps (Austria!!❤) and low mountain ranges in Germany. I LOVE it!!!😊
@@baca350.1Me too!!!!👍🏻😀
im a 21 year old that started really to cycle 2 years ago. I just restored a 1978 peugeot with the budget i had and still riding it. When i see this happy man still loving and riding his eddy merckx bike, it motivates me to keep cycling with my old bike.
Keep on going mate!!!
Wonderful documentary. Truly and inspiration. I'm turning 70 this year. Since retirement I am riding more than ever (strictly road). I won't brag about my milage. Only to say I am gone most of the day when I ride. I can only hope to make it to 90 let alone still be riding.
Cheers to all us old folks who are still in the saddle!!!
Thanks so much for taking the time to watch! Happy riding :)
❤❤❤
Yes, I am 67. Adventure before dementure
@@pigunderaroof i wish that your health does not to leave you :)
Cycling has helped me recover from being estranged from my family. It is my meditation. I pray to God I can cycle for as long as possible. I am grateful for my good health. Great inspiring film!!
Thanks for watching and for sharing your story :)
"I cycle because it makes me happy to do it." It really is as simple as that, and what has kept me going all these years.
This is a beautiful film and a beautiful tribute to your grandfather. Even though we are miles and years apart, I know his joy. I also started cycling late in life. It has saved me from my demons. To me, there is nothing more fulfilling and rewarding than planning a bike tour and then riding it. I hope you will get to make a sequel to this film in 10 years.
Thanks so much for taking the time to watch it and for sharing your story!!

My father's 79 and rides all year round in Canada's cold weather. He started riding in his 50's. We've riden across the Canadian Rockies together twice. The past few years, he rides a lot more than I ride. As your grandfather is an inspiration to you, my father holds the same to me.
I just turned 80 and live in BC. I've cycled to Alberta and back all three ways. I hope you got to ride the Icefields Parkway. Respect.

Very nice. My 85 year old father has just re-discovered cycling last year. May we all be inspired by our fathers and grandfathers.
That's amazing!!
I’ve just turned 62 and have cycled for nearly 40 years. He is such an inspiring person as I’m always thinking I’m too old for cycling.
Absolutely beautiful. I'm a cyclist and a filmmaker, this ticked the boxes for me! Your grandad is also awesome.
Thanks you so much, means a lot!!
My Italian/French father is turning 90 and has been an avid cyclist as long I can remember. Your grandfather reminded me of him and so I forwarded your doc to him. He loved it so much he asked me if there would be a way for him to reach out and send a personal message to your grandfather. Although he immigrated to Canada when he was 25, he has family in Italy and France and has visited often; it is where his heart is. If there might be a private way for my Dad to reach out, it would be appreciated. I think he found a kindred spirit in your grandfather.
Thanks so much for your comment, this is amazing! He would love to! The best way would be to send me an email at oftwolands@gmail.com and I can give you his postal address as I think it will be the easiest way :)
Cheers,
Flo
@@OfTwoLands I would love to know how this turns out!
Loved the story. As a cyclist, this is the dream. To keep riding until old age, being physically and mentally healthy but above all fostering the community and the family bond; what better way than to share your passion with those around that you care for and love. Thank you for sharing this story, it was very inspiring. Something to really look forward to as we all age in good spirits. Thank you.
Such a beautiful comment
❤❤❤
I'm a cyclist and an enthusiast film maker. This was a double inspiration for me. Congratulations to you and your grandfather!
Really glad you enjoyed this!! Thanks so much ☺️🙏
Wow, a beautiful portrait and what a fantastic man is your grandfather.
Thanks so much!! And yes, he’s very special ☺️
Yeah!!.. in deed, to have such a grandfather of even grand grandfather is a privilege, joy!!
To be honest most people in this age(if they still on this mother earth) are cover in illness, struggling...
Bicycling is how I self-medicate
I found the same exactly bike in my grampa basement 7y ago. He was a cyclist too. The bike is a Cinelli - Eddy Merckx. When I tried it I deeply felt in love for this sport. Thanks for documenting such a nice story. Amazing work :)
That's awesome!! Thanks so much for watching and for sharing your story too :)
What a beautiful story about your Grandfather, I’ve never read so many positive comments. The dinner table scene was my favorite with all of the siblings and so much love and fun. This film will stay with all of us who watched it for a long time, thank you and your Grandfather for making it.
Thank you so very much for the kind words !! The response has been incredible :)
What inspiration for us all.
I am 81 and lost my interest in cycling last year after a lifetime of riding.
I am physically fit and play tennis 3 or 4 times a week.
After seeing your film I now realise what I am missing and need to get back out there and start suffering again!!
Thanks so much.
Elwyn
This is the type of work I want to see. Very nice storytelling. Hard to find such work these days, especially in a time where everything becomes irrelevant so fast. He lived a great life!
Thanks a lot for the kind words!! I still can’t believe he’s 90!
A beautiful film and a beautiful man. You captured his wonderful spirit so well. The world needs more people like your grandfather.
Thanks so much for the kind words :) !!
The world needs more grandfathers an communities like that.

This is absolutely incredible, and extremely inspiring to see your Grandfather defying the norm of aging by doing what he loves, excellent work!!
Thank you so much man!!
And this is the secret to longevity--finding the joy, continuously growing and challenging oneself.
Wow, that's super inspiring. He doesn't look 90 at all.
Great documentary and cinematography! Very well crafted.
Thanks a lot!! And yes, haha, hard to believe he is 90!
Amazing stay positive and active until you drop dead. .❤❤
He is an inspiration. I am 63, and came back to cycling a year ago. I have a bad knee and a weak hip, but I keep cycling. Thanks for this beautiful video
Thanks for watching and for sharing your story :) !!
Beautiful film. Made me smile, laugh, and cry. And now, I am going for a ride... remembering that the best rider is the one who has the most fun. Thank you!!
If we all were as kind as this man, the world would be a different place.
Thank you.
Thank you so much for the kind words!!
This Gent is the embodiment of 'you don't stop when you get old, you get old when you stop'.

His body looks so healthy for 90 years. The quality of this film is on top! Great work! 👍

Bravo..There's a contented smile at the end that every cyclist knows...Took it up again at 60 after very active in my 30's...what an inspiration. your grandad is...
Thanks a lot for the kind words 🙏
What a beautiful and touching documentary that was wonderfully presented. I'm 64 and would love to ride with Benjamin and his family. He's a delightful soul with kind eyes. And am I allowed to covet his old school bike? No batteries to charge or disc brakes to maintain. Simply hop on and ride, just like when we were kids. Thank you for sharing this lovely content.
Thank you for watching, and for the kind words, it means a lot!! And yes, I love his bike too :)
Its stories like this, about people like Benjamin, that invigorates me to keep cycling ..it truly is the spice of life cycling. He's an inspiration and I wish him the best! What a wonderful story and thx for posting it!
Thanks so much for the kind words and for taking the time to watch it 🙏
How nice to watch something with kindness and humanity at its heart. What a wonderful inspiration your grandfather is to us all (I am a 61 year old female leisure cyclist and this truly made me feel its ok to keep going!). I found this so warming, wholesome and completely enjoyable in every respect. What a truly authentic life he is living...
90 years old riding a 50 year old bike!!
Thank you for sharing Ben's story. I have just started cycling again this year at the ripe young age of 38 years old. I can only dream of being as inspiring as Ben Piovesan. Amazing story telling and beautiful cinematography work.
Thank you for watching, means a lot!! Happy riding :)
Молоток мужчина!!! Привет из Петербурга. 😊
Wow I'm emotional throughout the whole film. Cycling saved my life and through Benjamin's eyes, it's so wonderful to know someone feels about cycling as much as I do even if I'm the more sentimental type. He's my new hero, when I grew up (lol), I want to be just like him! Thank you for sharing, give grandpa Benjamin a nice big hug for me.
That's so nice of you to say, I will make sure to pass on the message! Thank you for watching and for sharing your story :)
An amazingly beautiful film. Not only for the cycling but also the togetherness of those siblings. May we all live to love our rides and family to such an age. ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!! Thanks for taking the time to watch 🙏
I started cycling when I was 14 and now I'm 56, having raced on a team and now doing it for the joy it gives me, I see the joy in his eyes when he speaks of cycling. I can't imagine not doing it and I will keep doing it as long as I can. Feeling the wind on a downhill and the meditative joy of an uphill climb, there is nothing better! Just pure pleasure! Thanks
So true❤🚴🏽Nothing better🙂
Beautiful. Thanks for making this.
Im 40, a single child to my parents. The bond between your grandfather and his brothers was so amazing to see. And hour entire family. Im sure that has made a huge difference in the health of Piovesans. A good family unit close to each other is truly a blessing.
Bravo Benjamin and family.
Thanks so much for taking the time to share your story and watch the film :)
Proud is an understatement darling. Beautiful work and your grandpa is such a legend, I’m so glad you could make this together it is so special ❤
Thanks so much cutie, really means a lot and so glad to also have been able to include some of your stunning work in it :) ❤
This was a beautiful film. You did a great job capturing the story of your grandad. He is an inspiration for us all!

What a great film about an interesting person Benjamin. So kind and peaceful. It's great to have such beautiful family. Thank you everyone who was involved in creating this film. I really enjoyed to watch it and to know the story of Benjamin and his family.
I loved every bit of this. The story telling, colors, just everything!

Another cyclist and film-maker here. Thanks for posting this wonderful film. Your grandfather is an inspiration. Chapeau Benjamin!
Thanks a lot!! He really is someone very special :)
Cycling has kept this man healthy. And at 82 and still Cycling it's done the same for me. And sometimes it's a choice between getting on the bike or playing pickleball.
Cycling sure does seem to help! Thanks for watching :)
ty for the ultrawide support !! looks amazing
A brilliant short film … thanks, I really enjoyed this story. I still have the Italian Torpado bicycle that I received on my 16th birthday and that bike celebrated its 50th birthday last May. I retired a few years ago and took up cycling again with a new carbon endurance bike. Your grandpa is a great inspiration for me, on and off the bike … merci and bravo Benjamin! 🚴♂️🙂
Thanks for the positive feedback!! And wow congrats, that's amazing :)
Glad you enjoyed the doco!
WOW! Your grandfather is an inspiration. I need to get out more often and walk or bike so I can live a long healthy life like he is doing. Great doc by the way.

Wow beautiful, I hope to be cycling when I get to this age! The quality of this mini doc is outstanding, the cinematography, music selection, pacing, build up, your grandfather's joy is contagious, he seems like a very joyful person to be ground. Hope to see a sequel in 10 years time! ❤
Thanks so much for the positive feedback, it means a lot!
This is a wonderful tribute to an amazing grandfather showing the joy that can be had by riding on two wheels in a complicated world no matter how old you are. Inspirational film.
Thanks for the positive feedback!!
I'm 62 and biking gives me special joy. Cold for couple of months but this documentary motivates me to get back to the saddle!
So glad to read this ☺️
On my bike I forget my age and sorrows. It is slow enough to adsorb the environment and fast enough to feel the wind of freedom in your face. This is a very nice film.
Thank you for watching and for your beautiful comment!!
Lovely piece. Great cinematography. What an amazing man and family. So much to learn from this. Be a good person and surround yourself with good people and good things will happen. Thanks for making such a wonderful film. I wish him and his family many more years of happiness.
Thanks so much for the kind words and for taking the time to watch it ☺️🙏
Fantastic story!Thank you for telling it to the world.Great family.Great grandpa.
Thank you for taking the time to watch it ☺️🙏
Congratulations on your cinematography skills. Very inspiring. A united family is probably part of his success.
Thanks so much!!
Thank you for the wonderful documentary…gives me hope, as a cyclist, I can still ride through my older years
Very glad to read this!! Thanks for watching ☺️🙏
I came for the shots, stayed for the story. If you ever decide to discuss the how-to's behind filming this, I'd be more interested in finding out what went on in preproduction and the timing of filming each scene (ie. shooting after/before the interviews, spontaneous shooting of the family gathering, b-roll to add to the story, etc.). Even without a BTS video, this doc has been very helpful and inspiring. Thank you, Florent and the whole Piovesan family! I'm sure you made everyone proud! ✌
Thank you for the kind words!! I am currently working on BTS and cinematography breakdown videos where I will share as much as possible about the process of making this doco :)
Story was very inspirational and This is why cycling is beautiful. If only more people got into it!🚲😎
Thank you!!
An utterly charming, inspiring film. I hope he has more years of riding.
Thank you!! Me too ☺️🙏
What an Inspiration and what a beautiful film. Now I've got an idea how I would like to be in 40 years time. You left a big smile on my face! Merci!
Really glad you enjoyed it, thank you!!
Thank you for a lovely portrait of your grandfather. It made me smile and cry.
Thanks for taking the time to watch it ☺️🙏
Sir, I am 1/2 your age and had my biggest smash in TT this past summer. Too close to death than I care to be. My closest want me to stop. Honestly, I think to stop in some ways is akin to part of me dying. Keep pedaling. Keep living. Thanks/Grazie/Merci. -U10

What a beautiful film. Everything from pacing to the cinematography and color grading was spot on. Thanks for sharing this inspirational story of your grandfather with us!
❤ Much love for this video and your grandfather. I not often call something "inspiring" but this is something - what else would be inspiring if not this video, his life, his late start in cycling and those memories made with it. Thank you for sharing this. This is a great homage to your grandfather. I started cycling 3 years ago with being 40 and thought being late; but this gives me so much - the imagination of being lucky enough to do it for another 50 years? WOW! Thank you!

@@OfTwoLands honestly just such an inspiring little film. Loved the graphic cut away elements as well of the mountain. I was sort of hoping for an interview with his son when he was talking about cycling. Though you may push the timing for what you wanted. Could probably easily make this into a feature.
