Here is a video about shooting handheld with the BMPCC4K / 6K.
Do you guys prefer to shoot handheld or on a tripod ?
Cheers,
Flo
Depends but mostly handheld just because of mobility
@@Robocobo ß
To be sincere I prefer shooting on my shoulder rig but for low shots I use the cage. And for mobility, a cheap steadycam. Never used a gimbal. And i shot on a tripod when it’s absolutely necessary. You have beautiful content! Keep it that way!
I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of hand held. I always find it distracting. I prefer smooth floating camera movements.
I keep going back to your videos for reminding me of things that should be common sense but really aren't. I'm sure you inspire a lot of people.
Thank you so much for saying this :) !!
Me too. It's like having a conversation with a very talented friend.
5:17 "You might get dirty, but your footage will look good" Wise words my friend :)
Haha !! 😁👍
Yess at last a genius filmmaker , that has skills matching those Peter mc kinnon's on the otherside of the atlantic ♡☆
Without the ego's and to much flash and glitter !
Love your honest .. modest ..calming tutorial .
With awesome footage well done budy!
Grtz from a Flemisch follower ,
Johny Geerts
Thanks so much for the nice feedback man, means a lot :) !! One of the best comment I have ever received haha !!
@@OfTwoLands no thanks ,well derserved !
And yess handheld , if done well its way more immersive .
Gimballs was fir a couple of years cool and for product footage a handy tool as is a slider .
But most of us vlog or film loved ones .
Then handheld and some slomo is way more natural and pleasing.
Grtz
Peter McKinnon is massively overrated.
@@drift8021 in the beginning it was ..fun ..learning and all the good stuff ..
But slowly they made an product of Peter self.
Last time i wathed was when they were talking 'minimalisme lifestyle' how his friend from a Red helium ...to only a canon R5 todo his vlogs🙄🤯😵
I thought jip this is the moment after all these years ..
Enjoying these vids while going to bed, helps me relax and learn at the same time! Hope this year helps you get the love you deserve! You're a star flo 🌟❤
Thanks so much for the kind words !! And good night Haha :).
Because of your generosity in sharing all gear info plus the way you narrate you earned my subscription! well done
Thanks so much for the support :) !!
I was trying handheld this weekend for motorcycle racing and it is quite challenging! But these tips definitely help!
This is hands down the BEST content channel in youtube!
Thanks a lot man!
Blessings
Glad to hear !! And thanks so much for the positive feedback :).
Loved the video! You’re channel is one of the reasons I started mine! I’m definitely a fan of using a top handle! It’s my go to for documentary work.
Thank you !! Top handle is essential I think, especially in between shots I find.
Great video again mate. Im definitely going more for a handheld look usually, it gives footage a tangible feel. But of course there a time and place for stabilizers of all sorts!
Thanks man !! I feel the same, depends on the shoot and content :).
Amazing video ones again. Truly one of the few filmmakers that mastered shooting handheld. Keep it up mate!
Thanks for the kind words man, too nice !! 👊
Thank you for this video! The weight really helps a lot 🙂
I definetly want to master the handheld, because it is so universal and stylish.
I found that having my battery (an np-f) sticking out the back of the camera about 15cm on rails a great option for stability. It means I can hold the camera grip and lens, and press it against my chest for a much more stable base than my arms at the expense of making the camera footprint a fair bit bigger. Definitely find it much more stable than using the top handle, for me anyway :)
I'm sure it works well, each to their own I guess. As long as it works for you :).
Insightful content as usual. I have noticed that, as neat and as fun as it is to use gimbals, external monitors and focus wheels, I never actually end up using them or get bothered by the extra time I need to set up. I'm glad to hear I'm not alone with this discovery, so thanks for reassuring that less hardware doesn't have to mean less beautiful shots. :)
In tip #7 you mention that you stabilize in post; coming from phone cameras and doing my first few shots with my brand new BMPCC4K at the time, I was almost devastated looking through the footage afterwards and noticing - even though I was even using a gimbal - how "shaky" things looked. Stabilizing in post almost felt like "rescuing" the material I thought I screwed up, so having you mention that you're stabilizing in post to get the final touches done just took a huge load of my chest.
I'm not sure what would be the right format to present it, but I'd love to see how some of the establishing shots you showed here look before applying the post-stabilization.
Thanks a lot for watching !! Yeah I think gear is fun but only when it helps and doesn't get in the way.
Haha yeah I stabilise a bit, but like I said only for certain shots. I don't really any video that show before and after apart from the Crane 2S video.
It is mainly micro shakes when it comes to establishing shots.
This is the best video I’ve seen on handheld. Going out to practice tmw. Thank you. Saving this.
Thanks so much for the positive feedback!!
Awesome video I love your calm way of presenting. Definitely inspiring me to go more handheld!
Thank you so much :) !!
Fantastic video. So very practical and useful. Thank you so much! I am getting a BMPCC 4K very soon and am researching what I need to get started. TY!
Really glad you liked it, thank you !!
Wow.. hugely helpful video. Concise and dense with useful information.
Preference: definitely handheld - for all the reasons you've covered - primarily for ease and simplicity. I come from the digital photography world - the less I have to think about the camera, the more I can focus on what I'm really trying to do - get the perfect shot.
Kudos and many thanks!
Thanks so much for watching man !!
So helpful to get an insight into your work like this. Thank you for sharing!
Glad you’ve enjoyed it :). Thanks for watching !!
The footage is spectacular. I’m looking forward to sometime in the near future jumping to a BMPCC4k and seeing these set up’s is so helpful. Subbed 🤙🏻
Thanks a lot for the support, glad you liked the video :) !!
Thanks for the video man!
I've been looking for examples of handheld rigs for travel video, and you have just the right kind i was thinking of!
Thanks for watching and glad you like the rig :) !!
Very helpful tips presented in an effective manner. Great work!
Thanks a lot :) !!
I always enjoy your videos. I most use tripod as my back as issues so will be looking to get an easy rig. I am now also working out my arms so they can take more of the strain of any camera.thanks for the video.
Thank you for watching :) !!
Lovely vid! Appreciate you and some great advice here. I love the rig you have - I never knew about the little small rig 15mm rod attachment without a baseplate that's an awesome option for having a follow focus without going too crazy on the rig size
Glad you liked it !! And yes, the attachment is such a small part of the rig but helps immensely.
This video was such a pleasure watching! I’m new in this channel and just subscribed. Great job man. Thank you 🙏
Thank you very much, appreciate the support :) !!
Great video. This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks
Thank you, glad you liked it!!
Great content! Distilled knowledge is rare on youtube. Also nice to see someone getting superb results from the BMPCC ecosystem which is capable of great quality, while remaining 1/2 to 1/3 the price of competing Sony or Canon video centric camera's. Subscribed.
Thanks a lot for the nice feedback :) !!
Finally a video that every filmmaker can benefit from!! Thank you!!!
Haha thank you, very glad to know :) !!
Great video! Love your content, please keep going. Very informative. Your shots are also amazing !
Thanks very much :) !!
This is top tier stuff, thank you for the tips!
Thank you man, appreciate it !!
The content The Voice-over both are amazing, just subscribed
Thank you so much !!
Very helpful video! And nice shots!!
Thank you !!
Very useful information. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Glad you found it helpful :). Thanks for watching !!
Superb video! thanks!
Thanks for watching !!
Great tips and amazingly beautiful footage. You inspired me last month to purchase your documentary rig. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with us!
Thanks so much man !! How do you like the rig ?
@@OfTwoLands I love it so far. Light, compact, the 7” screen is a game-changer. I think for longer lenses, I’m definitely going to need some rails and matte box w/ NDs to make it as heavy as possible, but for getting out there and shooting I’m so happy to finally come home with images that I don’t have to fight. That’s a camera thing, not necessarily a rig thing, but thank you for sharing with us the rigs and your footage. Helped me finally make up my mind. The A7S III was my choice, but you proved to me how incredible the BMPCC is - a camera that is allowing me to learn problem solving. Cheers, Flo!
Super helpful! Thank you!
Thanks for watching :) !!
Watching your video always make me wannabe go out and start shooting footage. Nice video. Thank you .
Happy to hear and have fun :). Thanks for watching !!
Thank you so much. Very informative and well presented video
Thank you !! Glad you liked it :)
Great insights! Thanks a bunch. Always prefer the handheld version for mobility! Great cinematography
Thanks so much !! I have always been drawn to handheld :).
Beautiful video, mate!
Thank you :) !!
Have always been a handheld guy myself. Good stuff!
Thanks !!
Your joob is very amaizing bro, thanks very much for your tips to films documentary films on handheld camera. AWESOME!!! I love the color of Bmpcc
Thanks so much for watching !!
very beautiful
video, thank you !
Thank you for watching :) !!
Well done. Love your videos!
Thank you :) !!
Great video! Thanks
Glad you liked it, thanks for watching :) !!
Thanks for the video, it helps.
Glad it does, thank you :) !!
great hints for shooting with BMPCC cameras!
Glad you liked it :)
great advice. thank you
No worries, thanks for watching :) !!
Thank you!
An evf pressed up to your eye can also help in reducing jerky movements with a light rig.
Great video man! Personally I love handheld with shoulder rig rails, lots of points of contact and option to throw it on shoulder. Got the new smallrig shoulder mount and absolutely love it, very neat and mobile.
Thank you !! I have a shoulder rig as well but always go back to Easyrig or just hands haha. I need to check that new Smallrig :).
@@OfTwoLands Ye cool man, works great with the new smallrig Matt box too
Hey man! Just discovered your channel. Great stuff! Thanks!
Thanks a lot :) !!
Very good video!
Thank you !!
While traveling I like to put some carbon 15mm rods in my bag and a smallrig shoulderpad. Instead of holding the rig only handheld I get a really orginic look with a mini shoulder setup. Easy for longer shots.
That's a good setup, I love using 15mm rods when I shoot with cinema lenses :)
Love the video. 🔥🔥🔥
Glad you do, thank you !!
Bro how have I been watching you this long and not been subscribed. You content a1 bro
Haha hope you did !!
Wonderful video
Thanks !! :)
Ive always been really strict about shooting stable shots and just recently starting to shoot handheld. Its a process to leave the shake to the footage but it looks good.
Smooth! Much love from India!
Thanks :) !!
just stumbled across this from your post on reddit. love shooting handheld but my a7siii is so light i can struggle to keep it steady. looking at adding more weight but battery life is already great. might add a big vmount just to steady it a little.
anyway, really great video man. love the title screens and pacing. informative and had some really beautiful shots.
Thanks a lot for the positive feedback man !! I think a V Lock at the bottom and a top handle will definitely help :)
Fantastic Video! You weren't kidding when you said you were doing a video about shooting hand held very shortly! I only asked a week ago. Thank you!
Thanks so much man !! Haha yeah was just about to start working on it and a few people asked around the same time including you so decided to make it a priority :).
Talk about service! I’m a VERY happy subscriber!
Haha glad to know :) !!
Great video
Thank you !!
I used to sit down and pan a camera on my knee, then stabilize it lol. Slowmo really makes it hard to have bad looking handheld footage. I recently got my R5 RAW footage to match the RED's really good, so I have been filming more with the R5 now. That IBIS is so nice, especially with a lens that has IS, I was able to walk down a rocky trail and it looked fine lol.
Yeah IBIS would be nice. Never felt like I needed it though. Keen to test it out at some point :).
Great video!
Thanks !!
Very Nice!
Thanks !!
Love shooting handheld, and it's basically a necessity with my clients who are mainly musicians. However the 6k has always given me a hard time getting that fine line between shaky and naturally handheld.
I totally understand what you mean, sometimes the 6K is not heavy enough or too heavy. It's more about finding the right rig and movements.
So good I had to watch this several times. Do you ever use straps or shoulder mounts?
Thanks a lot !! Yes I do :).
I use a monopod which I don't see many folks using..but it helps balance and also takes the load off your back...
Subscribed! great tips! I've been apprehensive in getting the pocket 6k but I think I just need to do it.
Thank you for the support !! I’d say Get it, it’s a great cam and a pretty safe investment :).
@@OfTwoLands I may hold off until their press conference on the 17th!
Useful advice! I honestly prefer using some kind of tripod or monopod but as you pointed out it isn’t always possible. I’ve recently been practicing handholding using a top handle while focusing manually. I kind of suck at it, so I probably fork out the $ for the follow focus. from Tilta. That’s how I found your channel, by looking for focus follow (follow focus) reviews. Glad I happened upon it.
Thank you !! That follow focus is awesome for the price, especially for small to medium size rigs and lenses :).
Thank you❤
hell YES this is the guide i need. it still dosent really help when im trying to film while riding a bike though...
although one thing i find useful is if youre using a DSLR or mirrorless with a camera strap, shorten it if possible, and put it around your neck and pull it taught to get better footage. helps a lot especially if youre in a situation with a stock camera, meaning not a lot of size or weight. like a kit DSLR or mirrorless
Haha !! A strap does help, but depends on the angle of course. I used to this back in the day with my 5D3 :).
Excellent video! I’m definitely going to try to do more handheld gigs. I wanted to ask - are there any focal lengths you prefer to shoot with when you shoot handheld?
Thank you !! Usually I prefer to stay between 20mm and 35mm on Super 35 sensors :).
i have 2 dj ronin tripod grip/handles on mine. one on the side of the cage and one on the v mount that works as a tripod. you can also do 2 on top or 2 on each side of the cage. it might get front heavy with the 2nd configuration though.
Would love to see your explanation for controlling the manual focus while handheld
Great insight into handheld filming.
Interesting to see the follow-focus using the Tilta kit rod and not a full rail setup which looks super agile.
Surprised that you use NPF and LP batteries considering the V-Mount.
And I saw you have 70-200 in your cine kit. How does that work for handheld given the extent of the zoom? can we assume you film in 120fps or is that primarily tripod-based?
Thanks!
Thank you :) !!
I got 6k, thanks for sharing your way of working with it handheld without any stabilizers, I've gotta try working more like you! :)
Thanks for watching man !! I think do whatever works for you :)
Great tips as always Flo! I just want to reiterate a few you mentioned for the filmmakers just starting out.
1. Weight.. SO important for steadier handheld work (as Flo said, Handheld doesn't just mean your hands. Handheld in Hollywood, for what its worth, usually involves a shoulder rig) More weight = Steadier shots. Just make it comfortable for you.
2. Points of Contact. People don't talk about this as much, but it's so important for steady shots. Left hand on left part of camera, right hand on right side, maybe a EVF, or elbows in and rest the camera on your belly... all help with making stable shots.. and go with the flow.
3. Movement. I keep saying "steady" but too steady as in, pure gimbal work, unless its motivated in the story, just seems fake. When you walk, you are seeing like a gimbal. Movement is natural, and it should assist the story you are making. Love the fact you mentioned it should be organic, and what you are filming it totally fits.
Anyway, love the tips, reiterates what I try to do on every film shoot ;)
Thanks for watching Brian !!
Love this video 🔥🔥🔥 use too much ronin s trying to get a different look with handheld
Glad you do, thank you :) !!
you, and other videos shot with your hands on a movie set, inspired me, you have great material. For some reason, such a hand-made picture is better perceived, closer to us by nature. And, after 9-10 years of shooting on a gimbal, I want to start shooting with my hands, because I have tried shooting like this many times, and I understand what freedom of movement it is, as well as the convenience of choosing a composition. tell me, is this object 16-35 enough for you to constantly shoot with your hands? do I often have to connect a teleconference?
I am spending alot of time in backcountry trying to break into the outdoor filming community where I live. I have found for me I like have a small tough tripod so I can film from about 3 feet off the ground but also I can use it braced against me while standing. Has worked for me so far...Im also carrying alot of other gear so its nice to be able to set the camera down. Just my two cents. Im a firefighter by day so the weight is a privilege haha.
Thanks for this great video! I love shooting handheld but am still looking for the best setup. I‘d love to have something like the focal length equivalent of the Canon EF 24-70 IS / 2.8 for the BMPCC 6K with image stabilization. Last Sunday I‘ve borrowed my daughter‘s EF-S 18-135 kit lens and actually like the footage even if it could be sharper and was a pain to focus manually.
Thanks for watching !! It is quite hard to find a 24-70 IS equivalent for the bmpcc6k. When I need IS I use a combination of the 16-35 IS and 24-105 IS most of the time and it works pretty well.
great job
Thanks !!
I like a Mix. Though I love handheld and the weight and configuration is why I went for my ZCam
Zcam seems like a fun one to use. How do you like it ?
@@OfTwoLands so far I have loved it. It's very flexible for different rigs. Unfortunately getting it in 2020 I haven't been able to do much with it and now I sold my Metabones for the Turbo mount and it's taking a while to get here. But I am very excited to get shooting with it.
Thanks for the video. Love your content. The p-tap to 12v cable keeps getting in the way of my left hand when I'm shooting handheld and trying to pull focus. How did you remedy that problem, with sprigs?
Hi. Great video. What is the small rig piece you use on the left side of the camera to hold your follow focus? I have been looking for that specific piece for some time. Thanks for all the great content.
Thanks!! It is an older version of the Rod Clamp by Smallrig :)
Thanks for the video. Maybe I was unconcentrated and missed it? But I have the feeling that you didn't talk about the importance of having a lens with stabilizer? Because that is probably a very important thing when it comes to filming handheld? Whatś your opinion about shooting handheld with lenses that has no stabilizer?
Thanks !! Haha, yep I should have indeed. Even more since I talk about it all the time. I always use IS lenses when I can, especially for doco and travel content. I think I focused on the technique and the benefits of handheld. Thanks for watching :).
Great video. I'm wondering about your exposure method since you're not relying on ND filters apparently, for what I see on your setups. Are you using just the camera settings? I'm not experienced with black magic cameras so forgive me if the questions sounds dumb.
I do both. I have been thinking that if there's only handheld shots in video, the result may be restless.
I have in fact done lately several very still news videos in which the camera does not move at all, but that needs kinda "strong and interesting images" with content.
Yeah I like to do a mix of both as well :).
Nice video 👍 I subscribed😉😉
Thanks for the support :) !!
So good to watch a highly informativ video without an arm wheeling talking head screaming his version of "heeeeeywazzup evreeeebodeeey", but with just a calm voice and some spectacular footage instead. Great, thank you!
Thanks so much man, I try my best to stay honest and genuine :).
great content as always.what is your opinion about chosing a sigma 17-50 image stabilised lens vs sigma 18-35 f1.8 lens for bmpcc 6k. purpose is travel. i saw you are using canon 16-35 f4 and sigma 18-35 but never a 17-50 f2.8
17-50 or 24-70 🤔 this is my dilema on sigma hsm lenses.
Thank you !! The reason I use the 16-35 is that I shoot photos with a full frame camera and the sigma 17-50 is for Aps c sensor.
I use the sigma 18-35 for video only (interior, interviews and youtube mostly) and is hard to beat for range, aperture and price.
For travel video a 17-50 2.8 would be great indeed :).
I think glidecams are the perfect balance between gimbals and handheld. They seem to be the most versatile.
Depends on the shooter and project I guess :).
Great choice for Matte Box! Those smaller boxes are not deep enough to be usefull imo.
Do you have a link to the base plate you're using for the rods?
Love handheld as well, just my rig is a bit to light at the moment to get some of these shot nice and smooth. and I'm also still shooting on the 700D so no slowmotion options
Yeah shooting with DSLRs isn't always easy. I started with a 5D3 so I remember haha. Using IS lenses helps a lot.
@@OfTwoLands Yeah true. Got the same experience. But also the 700D is a bit outdated so I'll probably upgrade in a few months 👍
What is clamping the follow focus and rod to the BMPCC cage?
salut, tu utilise quel objectif dans ton kit documentaire? ton objectif est il stabilisé? merci
Love the minimalist approach to the rig! How long does one v-lock battery last for a shoot?
Also, do you mount the tripod plate below the v-lock battery?
Thanks !! Lasts around 2.5-3hrs :).
And yes I do if I have to use a tripod :).
