Introduction to Electrochemistry

  • Everything you need to know about Electrochemistry. Electrochemistry is the relationship between electricity and chemical reactions. There are two ways that electricity and chemical reactions interact: certain chemical reactions can create electricity, and electricity can force certain chemical reactions to happen that wouldn't happen otherwise. We'll look at two very common examples in electrochemistry. We'll see how a galvanic or voltaic cell uses a chemical reaction to create electricity, and we'll see how electrolysis uses electricity to cause water to decompose into hydrogen and oxygen gas. We'll also look at the list of Standard Reduction Potentials, to figure out what chemical reactions will happen on their own (are spontaneous) are can create electricity, and which will not happen on their own (are not spontaneous) and require electricity to happen.

      This is what separates great teachers from mediocre teachers.
      In fact, all my best teachers at university have had this kind of passion for their topics.
      I remember a physics teacher I had a couple years ago who would improvise a lot and sometimes build his own demonstrations, then photograph them in his free time and be like "the coolest thing about this picture is that I have done it all myself! I built it yesterday and took a shot of it with my cellphone", just all casual like that, lol.
      And one time about 20 minutes before an exam he casually walked into the exam room with a backpack, and looked exactly like a student (he was around 40 years old, so he didn't look that old), and then the invigilators were like "are you taking this exam?" and he was just like "nope, I am the examinator :)", lmao.
      He was pretty awesome.

    I really like your step by step illustrative description of this process. That is the way everything should be taught, "bottom up." A lot of teachers/profs assume a basic foundation knowledge and jump right in the middle which leaves many students confused right from the start. Instead of understanding the process, many students just memorize applicable information to pass a test and they are left with a big question mark.

    my teacher taught me that anode is oxidation because both words start with vowels. and reduction is the cathode because both start with consonants. and The CAThode is always PAWsitive ^o^

    Hello, how do the electrons in the zinc 'know' there is copper on the other side so that they should go in that direction?
    Thanks

    • @tdewitt451
      @tdewitt451  8 років тому +46

      Great question! It's actually more like the copper atoms have a magnetic-style pull on the electrons in zinc, so it's like they're getting pulled out of the zinc by a stronger force.

      MadeOf Clay cu pull electrons from wire ,wire from zinc

    • @2TVshanedawson
      @2TVshanedawson 6 років тому

      So the wire becomes a straw for the catode (zinc)

      +Lucas Bezerra I didn't forget it. I left it out because it's very complicated and I wanted to make sure that everyone could understand the main point. If you want to learn more about salt bridges, you should check out my video on Galvanic Cells! Thanks for the comment.
