The acronym for the Replika - LSTR - is a wordplay, because if you say LSTR out lout it sounds like "Elster" which is german for "Magpie" . The German terms in this game are really good because it's not just German but German with a highly bureaucratic/militaristic feel to it. "Aufklärungs-Raumfahrzeug" for "Scout Space Ship" is a word you would find in a technical manual of a military vessel.
King In Yellow actually predates H.P. Lovecraft. The King in Yellow is a book of short stories by the American writer Robert W. Chambers, first published by F. Tennyson Neely in 1895 (Lovecraft wrote 1920-30). Lovecraft sited the book as one of his inspirations for weird fantasy.
If you want a great emotional story (not necessarily a logical one - this is a rare case of a surreal story done RIGHT) with great survival horror type gameplay, magnificent visuals and just enough horror to be scarry but not enough to be repulsive - please PLEASE WELONZ, keep this game on a backlog for a moment when your current schedule isn't so full with new games. Like, trust me - this game deserves the whole world. It's magnificent.
I'd definitely see more of this! In case it's of interest, here are some replika unit types/german bird names seen so far: EULR, Eule = owl ARAR, Ara = macaw Adler = eagle LSTR, Elster = magpie Star = starling
As a Chinese gamer, I'm surprised you recognize the vast majority of the Chinese elements in the game. And appreciate and admire you for your multi-lingual ability. I'm one of the fans of this game myself, and I'd even like to translate and republish your live video to the Chinese video site Bilibili, since there are very few live videos of this game in China. (While this may be a long term plan and will be executed slowly, I hope these words wish you well!
theres so much more to see with this game in terms of world-building, gameplay, puzzles (one of my favorite parts), and story. it would be really cool if you were able to play more of it!
30:10 Oh, apparently all Replika (german for replica) are named after birds. Eule means Owl. I find it kinda funny now. Also in that form a little bit later, it seems if they (the Replika) write down their identities for administration purpose, they only include the three letters from their persona designations and an R at the end for Replika. But when talking to others and leaving notes(hint??), they use their full bird names. So the Eule unit sends a request to an Ara (Macaw) Replika unit and we play as an LSTR(Elster) Unit. That is what I mean by kinda funny :D
This game is fantastic and I highly recommend giving it a full playthrough, the story is intriguing from start to finish and it is never overwhelmingly scary. Great first look!
Please continue! It's interesting that you know Chinese, so you can translate some bits here and there, making this playthrough unique! By the way, speaking of the game itself and the flag: The devs are from Germany and the setting is heavily inspired by the GDR, Communist Eastern Germany during the Cold War. And the German numbers from the intro are re-creations of the infamous Cold War-era number stations, mysterious broadcasts in various languages (including German) which you could pick up in the late XX century in Europe. It's believed that they were Soviet secret messages for Soviet spies in western countries. Why they decided to add Chinese to that, I have no clue - I haven't finished the game yet so maybe there is some lore trivia explaining that (I can see imagine some futuristic union between GDR and communist China) but maybe it's just for stylistic purposes.
I'll add my voice to the chorus of "Yes, please continue!", but only if you have time et cetera. How well I know the limitations imposed by competing interests and real-life concerns. Thank you for this first look. 👍
I wonder if Eusan is a shortening of Eurasian. If you continue this at some point, I'll definitely watch/listen to it. The audio atmosphere puts me in mind of Genesis Alpha One, which is another game I love.
6:09 Welonz has surprisingly good German pronunciation. „Gestalt“ in German means „appearance“ or can be an abstract way of „being“. If it is supposed to be German 😂
Oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy, this looks good. I have no idea what's going on, but it seems really cool. I love the atmosphere! The sound design seems to really be helping with that, reminds me of the first Alien film. You're doing great btw, I was laughing when you wanted to call it after 30 minutes, but I TOTALLY get it. I'd love to see more of this, but only if it's something you'll enjoy playing.
I'm a sucker for pixelart games that are able to tell a good story, especially ones set in a dystopian future. I love the ambiance and tone it has. And sound design can make or break a good horror/mystery thriller game imo. I'm fully in on this one! It hit all the right notes. What a contrast to New Tales from the Borderlands in intruigue and quality (though one can argue they aren't comparable to one another). Hope you'll continue it on your own or for the channel some day :)
Also it's probably the only horror game I've ever played that's good all the way through - there's no suuden pitfalls in terms of story, art or gameplay truough the whole 7-10 hour experience.
The horrified whimpers every few minutes are so funny because I was the exact same when I played signalis for the first time (and every other time as well)
I'm too scared to play it myself, but I will definitely watch your playthrough, if you continue! Thanks for being brave 😊 Btw it's awesome to hear you translate the Chinese writing! I find that reading the German also adds some interesting nuances.
I stumbled across this video to get an idea of the game and decided to go ahead and play it. I was just hoping for a new and decent classic survival horror game to scratch that itch after the Halloween season. This game well exceeded my expectations. I searched for your video after playing through the game a few times to write that it would be great to see what you think about the rest of the game. Also an interesting bit of info is that the recognizable song playing during the radio broadcast from the strange hole, is the Raindrop prelude by Chopin. The interesting bit is there is some history and myth to his time writing the piece at a monastery in Europe where the windows would often let water in when it rained. The raindrop prelude was said to be written during a prolonged thunderstorm while waiting for his lover to return from a trip after his health had steadily declined and he was suffering from severe hallucinations and delusions. While playing through the night the residents of the monastery had said that it sounded as if the prelude was echoed by the noise the thunderstorm. Based on how the devs have put some real thought in referencing real world media and art, I think it's a great fit past just being a classical piece that fits the emotional tone. Thanks for coming to my TED Talks
Looks like a great game! I would really like a playthrough! Apparently the game is made by a small game studio located in Hamburg, Germany. It only consists of two people, Yuri Stern and Barbara Wittmann. Perhaps one of them speaks Chinese/Japanese and the other german? That would explain the languages 😅
Looks awesome, love the aesthetic and the atmosphere! Definitely going to play this one and hope you'll keep going too :) Also I feel like the acronyms correspond to the replika units name, like LSTR becomes Elster, and maybe EULR correspond to Eule unit.
3 days late, after watching this I really wanna see more of this from you! Not sure if you have place for it in your schedule now, but I can wait, for *some* time, this game really looks good and even without explaining anything so far it's got me hooked
It's super cool to watch someone play this blind, and especially someone who knows Chinese. Japanese kanji uses the same (or similar) characters as Chinese, but I know at least the words themselves, i.e. how they're pronounced, are different. I don't know what all that says for the meaning of words. Based on the words you were catching, it seems right. For instance, the Health indicator's second radical being "bird" makes total sense considering some stuff you find a bit later.
I dont think taping over a magnet strip would be an issue as long as it still fits. Way more important is having a close to zero crack distance at the break.
DAMN, I'd love it if you continued this so bad, but the current gaming schedule is wild so I completely understand if you don't or delay it for now. One of the better horror games out now; it trades dread for jump scares. Very Silent Hill-esque, but stands on its own. Another interesting title that may be up your alley in the future is called The Chant; it's developed by former devs of Sleeping Dogs (!!!) and Bully, funny enough. Also, the leading actress (Siobhan Williams) was Laura from The Quarry. It's psychedelic horror that trades guns for magic and spiritual items like sage brushes lol; it's unique enough to stand on its own even if it's not fantastic, but good enough. Not very scary either, but still a fun experience. It's around 6-8 hours, too, so it's not a long game either if that helps!
Im usually not watching letsplays of games, that i did not play myself, but here im very intrigued and will watch this to the end, if you continue playing. So I join most of the comments, to encourage you to play more... Oh, and it has (almost) nothing to do with the fact that I want to look at the Welonz terrified...🙂
27:58 It's probably Elster(thieving bird?) since it is her/its persona. It means Magpie. There was something about it in the operating system while she booted up as well. Not sure how I should feel about the Chinese-German-Japanese or the so-called "Eusan" mixture in the game xD.
Gah, I've been playing this for a while now, somehow I missed this video when you uploaded it. I really hope you'll enjoy playing this game as much as I did!
Glad you liked it. Even though it's a horror game, it doesn't rely on jump scares like so many others. In fact I don't think it uses jump scares to begin with. But the atmosphere is indeed heavy. If you decide to continue, please remember to talk with NPCs repeatedly until you exhaust their dialogue.
We don't have American flags in every classroom, but it wouldn't be weird or out of place to see one. In my first few years of school, we would have to say the pledge of allegiance every morning before school. I don't know what was with that bullshit or if it is still done today
Another great first look! But poor welonz heart.. I hope you find the thyme to do a series on this or The entropy centre. That said i'm still trying to catch up on dragon age.. AND i haven't finished forbidden west! I bring shame to the queen or story driven adventures.

This game is another 10/10 for me this year alongside TUNIC. Both games I discovered on your channel. Looking forward to your walkthrough!

My game of the year, it nailed the Silent Hill atmosphere.
The triangle patterns at 33:00 or 34:07 are called Sierpinski Triangles.
