    Part of what makes thrawn such an amazing villain. Even when he loses, and he must lose for the sake of the plot, he still gets something out of it. Perhaps, not enough alone to act on it, but enough to be scary and be further refined into actionable information. Each setback will, at best, slow him down and at worst speed his efforts further

      It even required divine intervention to defeat Thrawn. Additionally, the reason Thrawn often monologues is that he seeks to hear the opinions of others and provoke reactions from them. Chiss, with their crimson eyes, possess an exceptional ability to read body language and emotions, making these interactions particularly revealing to him.

      One thing I want to mention Thrawn is not really a villain, but more of an opponent. Considering how Star Wars tends to parallel with WWII, you can say that he parallels General Rommel and Admiral Yamamoto. Both good military leaders but not villains. Rommel was very successful with Germany's campaigns into Africa but he was not supportive of the regime and wanted to overthrow Hitler but not they way other conspirators wanted. He even took his own life to protect his family from the Nazis. Yamamoto, despite being the mastermind for the attack on Pearl Harbor, did not want war with America for he believed it was unjust, (Some extra information, the Imperial Army acted like the warlords of old Japan also note that there were several times in Japan's history, that the Emperor is not really the highest authority, but the Shogunate) he even understood Emperor Hirohito's poem that he hoped for peace and was waiting as well hoping for the recall order before the attack commenced. He said in regard in a war with America, "I could raise havoc for a year and after that I guarantee nothing." I should quote what he said after the attack on Pearl Harbor, "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve"
      Sheesh! ended up saying more than I thought!
      On the scene with Thrawn and Hera, Thrawn actually respected Hera. Thrawn meant what he said about "keeping it in a place of honor." it was not a trophy for his own glory, it was to preserve it since he thought that Hera would be able to care for it and obviously Slavin wouldn't. Also note that he was surprised when Hera said she would have smashed it had she had known and Slavin's attitude making Thrawn almost loose his trademark temper! Towards the end of Rebels, they tried making Thrawn look like a villain and Thrawn despises civilian causalities unless the bombardment was overall "fireworks."

    "Why would I surrender when I hold your entire army prisoner?"
    "No. You've simply moved my assets to a secure position; so that I can bombard civilians on your homeworld without incurring Imperial casualties."
    Thrawn is like a Roman Centurion. He didn't reach his rank by playing nice.

      "I do not require glory, only results."
      It seems that the writers were trying into make Thrawn into a villain and partially ruining his character, he despises civilian casualties unless he was only bluffing and the bombardment was really "fireworks."

    • @thenovicewhispers
      @thenovicewhispers 9 днів тому +6

      @Soundwave142 The idea of a villain is relative depending on your perspective. It was not at all uncommon for generals and leaders to use the threat of casualties as a bargaining chip in conflicts throughout human history. If you look at Thrawn's choice from a modern point of view, then it is easy to frame him as the villain for this. Things get more nuanced the more complex the story gets. If the roles were reversed it would be interesting to see how Ezra would react if his army (and thus his agency) was held hostage by the enemy. It's easy to judge until the protagonist is put in a position where they have to make a cruel choice. War is ugly.

    • @Soundwave142
      @Soundwave142 9 днів тому +2

      @@thenovicewhispers War is ugly, yes. I do still think the writers were botching it (not just here FYI) but I can see him using the threat of civilian casualties (I may not have been as clear) as a bluff. Like how he knew that the Rebel's have friends always rushing in (without thinking) to the rescue. He could be using the Rebel's "heroism" and the Imperial stereotype against them. He threatens bombardment but has not the intention of killing civilians. To make the threat more convincing he instructs the gunners to not use full power except in open areas, not target civilians but shoot at open but relatively close areas and cause damage to buildings and destroy empty buildings. Cause a lot of mayhem to make the threat convincing.

    • @thenovicewhispers
      @thenovicewhispers 9 днів тому +6

      @Soundwave142 I'm saying that he absolutely would have bombarded civilians if pushed far enough, and whether or not that makes him a villain depends on your point of view. From his reasoning, the bombardment stops when Ezra surrenders what he stole, so he might justify it by saying Ezra is the one responsible for the civilians' lives, since he chose to commit treason and create a rebellion against empire forces in the first place.

      Thrawn himself wouldn't survive the predatory politics of the Imperial military. He reached up the ranks with the help of Palpatine, effectively becoming his personal champion. His skill of a strategist is extraordinary, yes, but Palpatine made him his officer only to gain his guidance and informations about the unknown regions and the local threat.

    Thrawns job (as a character) was to make the empire scary again, after the rebels continually easily outsmart the empire he is the one who actually succeeds, from the capture of them on Ryloth to the battle of Atollon, he's like Vader in series 2. He arrives to be an actual threat, the replacement for Kallus as the next non force sensitive to deal with, while Vader arrives after they take out the inquisitor. He is imo the single greatest threat the empire had to the rebels.

After operation cinder was a failure they actually ended the war pretty well maintaining their core planets and access to their war manufacturing centers like corellia.
    I would love to see a series about thrawn navigating the post war empire, rebuilding it from a scattered, insignificant, afterthought, to a force to be reinvigorated force to be reckoned with. Watching him use his cunning and smarts to backstab, steal, and coup the existing imperial command.

      @BitrateBilly 15 днів тому +4

      Actually, the other officers acting stupid is intentional, they arent actually tacticians or good at their jobs, most are just rich assholes who bought their way to the top, so they are easily outmanuevered by the rebels since they actually HAVE competent tacticians since those positions are earned through legitimate effort.
      Thrawn is so competent because he got to the top the old fashioned way, if the other officers actually worked their way towards the top instead of just literally being PTW rich folk, they would be in similar levels of competency to him, obviously not 1:1, but they would definitely be able to see more bullshit when its coming.
      Funnily enough this exact reason is why Thrawn actually reward individuals despite failure, should they show competence but make a mistake *and* own up to it, he will often reward or teach them better tactics for next time, especially if that failure still has something to salvage, an incident where a tractor beam operator tried creative tactics to catch luke skywalker but failed and Thrawn rewarded his creativity with a promotion both for his quick thinking and for owning up to his failure, whereas another beam operator blamed others for his own incompetency and Thrawn punished him severely.

In ESB and ROTJ he was the commander in charge, and yes I know there was an Emperor. For me, the only Star Wars is the OT.

      @@faisalmemon285Thrawn has been a character since only a few years after the OT, if memory serves, with his character being the primary villain of the Thrawn trilogy, which was a direct sequel to the OT (give or take a two or so year timeskip). This was before the Disney canon existed, and falls within the bounds of the old “Expanded Universe.” The Legends continuity.
      Thrawn’s reimagining in Rebels follows very closely to his characterization in this trilogy, just timeshifted to during the time of the rule of the Empire. Vader has always been highly competent, but his primary function as a character is fear. He knows how to use it, and he bloodily dismantles his foes accordingly. Thrawn is meant to work in concert with Vader as another of the Emperor’s top agents. However, his skill is as a military mastermind. The other commenter mentioned that Thrawn is a “big picture” thinker, and he narrows in on details based on that.
      The two characters have fundamentally different styles of doing things. Vader engages in brutal spectacle to inspire fear and cause his opponents to mess up more and more, creating greater openings. Thrawn, meanwhile, exploits what openings there already are with ruthless efficiency, often identifying weaknesses that his opponents don’t even know they have. One uses the current power to destroy, the other uses his opponents to destroy themselves. Thrawn isn’t “above” Vader. They’re both top agents of the emperor, along with the likes of Grand Moff Tarkin, and their methods differ dramatically.

      @ Nothing against you, but all that you have said ruins Star Wars more. Vader is like this and Thrawn is like that. Lucas already killed Vader a lot with Hayden Christiansen. The real Vader is the Vader of Empire Strikes Back. He is more powerful than Yoda and the Emperor (the midichlorian count). Only Luke would be an equal match to him.
      Saying all that, I know they have to make more content. But why does everything surround the OT and PT? I hate it when especially the OT is retconned. Like how Rogue One retconned so much. People like Rogue One so I won’t get into it, but like in ANH they show the Death Star laser being used for the first time. Then 40 years later in Rogue One they keep showing the laser being used time and again. Also the plans were “beamed” to Leia and not given by hard drive as shown I Rogue One.
