    Funny thing is, when I watched Avengers: Endgame, I was reminded of Joe's rant about Superman's Death at the end. Tony Stark's death is EXACTLY what Joe wanted to see for Superman. Has 22 movies to develop (granted he's not in all of them, but he's a present part of the universe throughout), goes out like a badass saving the day, and has the Avengers at his funeral.
    We got there eventually, Joe. Maybe not with Superman, or even DC, but we got there.

      @The Brightest Knight I'd rather see them "copy" the MCU rather than shove a bunch of stories into one movie, and pretend like this was a much better way of telling each heroes' stories. Superman could have used another movie. This version of Batman needed a movie or two, and Wonder Woman's first movie should have come out before BvS. They could have killed Superman after the first JL movie and revived him for a second JL movie.

      ΑΡΙΣΤΟΤΕΛΗΣ ΛΑΧΑΝΟΠΟΥΛΟΣ no, it’s only the case for Superman because Superman is special, he’s a hero, a symbol for many people. Not all deaths need to be like that, but they wanted a glorious one and to get that effect of a hero going out in a blaze of glory, those things need to be done. They don’t mean literally dozens, but having more time with the character in general. For example, in the dark knight trilogy, Batman’s sacrifice was impactful because you spent almost all of the runtime of the 3 movies with Batman.

After all we see he's alive during the post credit scene. The point was to show superman sacrificing himself to bring people hope and restore Batman's hope in humanity through that. So basically, the sacrifice was Snyder's way of making him become superman because up until the 3rd act of the movie he was still conflicted about who he was and who he wanted to be

      +GdoubleWB yeah, uh, no. Have you even read The Dark Knight Returns? Bats would be Team Cap, and Supes would be Team Iron Man. Oh wait, that's pretty much the plot of TDKR before Civil War was even a comic.
      To be more specific: Supes works for the government because "it's their world". Bats continues to be a vigilante despite pressure from high in the government and eventually the President orders Superman to stop Bruce, which he attempts because "they won't stand for you anymore." An epic clash of ideologies and a thrilling fight ensues.
      Civil War: Iron Man works for the government because "we're too powerful". Cap continues to be a vigilante despite pressure from the government. After some tragedies, sides are chosen, lines are crossed, and a war begins.

      If you think about it, both Superman and Batman would be in Cap's side. Especially if you're talking about the comic version which is about secret identities. Here's why:
      1. Both Superman and Batman have secret identities that they don't want to reveal because they know the consequences of it.
      2. Neither of them want the government keeping tabs on them.
      3. Superman believes in the same thing Captain America does and is a boyscout just like Cap.
      Therefore, Iron Man and his side would get their asses kicked lol.

    “Dark and aggressive vs kind and hopeful” doesn’t work in the snyderverse because all Snyder does is constantly leak dark and aggressive onto any screenplay he touches.
    Also, I’d argue that batman is all about hope. Hope that he can stop even one person from experiencing what he did, hope that he can live in the shadows and be a force for good, hope that he can make a way of life from violence and vigilance and not succumb to rage or paranoia, hope that even the most run-down streets of gotham might one day shine again, hope that even the worst villains could come back from their deeds with some mental help. And most of all, hope that a grim and gritty vigilante with a belt full of weapons and a head full of neuroses can be an unequivocal force for good.

Snyder only has one mode, dark and edgy this is the same guy who described the experience of watching BvS as losing your virginity. It’s obvious he wants to be deep and complex and in some cases has the capacity but is held back by a need to push things to the extreme and make everything bigger and more action packed, this is the guy who filmed BvS as an R despite the movie having a deal to get Lego sets and children’s toys for crying out loud

    Thank you for stating what I thought was clear the whole time...Eisenberg was never trying to play Lex Luthor, he was trying to play Ledger's rendition of the Joker. And it epically failed because Luthor isn't the Joker.
    But it was a symptom of a greater problem...nowadays everyone wants their superhero films, and the superheroes in them, to be just like Nolan's Batman films...dark, moody, gritty...even though that only works for Batman, not every other superhero. The Marvel Universe at least seemed to catch on to that, but if DC doesn't do the same they'll keep putting out mediocrity.

    • @zhengyingli
      @zhengyingli 7 років тому +7

      Jesse Eisenberg's portrayal of Lex was mostly influenced by Superman: Birthright's young Lex Luthor with the long hair and spastic behavior. Him acting like a mad scientist was not at all similar to the Joker, but rather to Lex's roots prior to John Byrne's reboot in the 80's.
      In other words, Lex in BvS is an amalgamation of the character's history in the comics, with motives not at all similar to the Joker's. Those equating the two have no fundamental understanding of the characters.

    • @KoishNoish
      @KoishNoish 7 років тому +15

      I think you raise an interesting point. I think what Nolan's trilogy has ushered in is a number of films where the protagonist has to be more complex or interesting than they were in past films. Darker tones aside, Nolan's films were a lot about humanising Batman, probably the easiest hero to humanise. But he made the character seem so real, so human, it was actually pretty believable. Marvel learned pretty well from this. Most of their films star heros who aren't perfect, there's complexity and struggle, sometimes with pretty serious issues.
      DC, weirdly, I think took the trilogy wrongly. Instead of adpoting the character complexity they adopted the darker overtones and the the plot complexity. The result is that all of their films feel like their trying to replicate Nolan's trilogy. Perhaps the next slew of films will prove different, it's certainly been a rocky start, but we'll see. There's so much potential for DC if they do it right, there is a gargantuan gold mine to be squandered should they dig the right tunnels but right now they're digging in all the wrong places.

    19:10 - 20:05: This is the part where Marvel Studios and the Russo Bros. pull it off beautifully when it comes to completing Tony Stark's story arc (no pun intended): we've followed his cinematic adventures since 2008, understanding his relationship with other characters, his motivation and pains as well as laughing at some off his wise cracking humor and when it comes to that 'scene' where it involves almost all of the characters of the Infinity Saga, we all shed a tear. It's a massive difference from Zack Snyder's horrible handling of Superman's death where I feel absolutely nothing at all.

      @@zhengyingli Wrong. Complete Apples to Oranges. Fellowship of the Ring was a direct adaptation of a book series where Gandalf dies in the beginning, not a cinematic universe. Comparison makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Like Joe said, it took hundreds and thousands of comics for Superman to die, so that wasn't even faithful to the adaptation, let alone remotely emotional. LOTR is a set specific story with a beginning, middle, and end, DC and Marvel are comics that have a completely different structure. Get better.

      It's even worse when Snyder said the main reason he did it is because he wanted Batman to found the Justice League.
      It isn't supposed to serve a narrative purpose or be part of the character's arc; it's just because Snyder couldn't figure out any other way to get Superman out of the picture except to copy a terrible comic storyline from the 90's.

      The sad thing is Superman has almost no character in these movies. No intellect or foresight. Now he's gone, not having anything to do with the formation of the Justice League. He'll get a resurrection, meet up with the League and in the heat of battle join them without a second thought.
      He's a boring static brick reacting to characters with agency.
      What a missed opportunity given how Brad Meltzer's JLA started with the trinity just sitting in the Bat Cave, thinking, making arguments on who should be picked for the League. Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman all had different ideas, different perspectives on things. You learned a lot about their characters by just seeing how they rationalize decisions.

    • @Bloggerboy1000
      @Bloggerboy1000 8 років тому +2

      ***** Yep, no way is Superman gonna be a comic relief character in these movies.
      The only way I can see them salvaging Superman's character is to do a complete 180 with him post resurrection. Maybe he's had a change of heart after such a traumatic event. The new Superman will be more optimistic, living with a glass half full mentality, enjoying life and being a superhero.
      It's basically their get out of jail card. Speaking of, maybe jail will "magically" change Eisenberg's Joker/Riddler into a proper Luthor in the sequels.
      Or they'll just cast Bryan Cranston as the real Lex Luthor, embarrassed of his son.

    • @Bloggerboy1000
      @Bloggerboy1000 8 років тому +1

      ***** Doomsday and the Death of Superman might be popular but not the best imo. Doomsday is the worst villain and the story is overrated.
      I mean in my opinion All-Star Superman is the Death story done right. That's what Superman stories should tonally and thematically be like any way.
      They could go for classics like For The Man Who Has Everything. Introduce the Legion of Superheroes, with Superman going off to adventures with them.
      Less fantasy/destiny bs, more high concept sci-fi.
      Have actual good villains like Brainiac for once.

      It would've made so much more sense if he was simply after expanding his wealth and power like usual. Perhaps if LexCorp and Wayne Enterprises were in competition for those reconstruction deals, and Lex is sewing fear of Superman to create a demand for his Kryptonite tech, then he creates Metallo rather than Doomsday, then maybe it could have worked.

  • @ryanstauffer119
    @ryanstauffer119 2 роки тому +9

    Killing Superman off was definitely the DCEU's first major mistake in the series. Obviously they were trying to catch up with the MCU, but his death definitely had to be earned. When I went to see it, I knew he they were going to resurrect him some way. It had only been two movies and they still needed him to appear in the Justice League movie one year later. I knew it before the dirt rose above his coffin. I agree that if they waited for Superman's death later, I would have liked to see the entire Justice League at his funeral. This is why Iron Man's death in Avengers Endgame was earned and we think it may be the last movie we would ever see Robert Downey Jr. play Tony Stark. That was 11 years of a built up earned and done right.
    And I like how in the end, they were saying they wanted to write the next movie. Not just to build up a good joke at the end of this video, but because there was a point there. If anyone should write a movie that is and adaptation of something, it should be by a fan that understands the material well. Like Sam Raimi when he made Spider-Man in 2002. He grew up on those comics and his vision became a success. Not just with making a lot of money on his Spider-Man movies, but it had a big impact with Marvel itself. The movie is referenced in other Marvel movies, TV shows, and video games. Even in pop culture itself. When it comes to movies like this, they are just going to be made fun of because of how bad they are. Don't get me wrong, I agree that there were things in this movie that made me glad I saw it. But it's not the best superhero/DC movie.

      Stannis 'The Mannis' Baratheon
      Sucker Punch is an awesome film where Zack Synder says the following:
      It is about a strong female character that speaks directly to the audience by using allegories of their own view of women and girls in pop culture through feminist history, and use their own familiar stereotypical action fetishes against themselves. Teaching young girls to fight against repressed society and young boys enjoy strong female characters for how strong they are, instead of just their beauty.
      Movie Goes/Reviews sees this: Zack Snyder made a bland film featuring young girls in his own fantasy fetish of different pop culture genres, win non-nonsensical action sequences, and boring characters. Showing the worst kind of how women are used in pop culture.
      I think somewhere things get lost in translation. I feel when people see Zack Snyder films they turn off their brains and see everything literal and never adds their brain to read the images that appear on the screen at all.
