  • Maybe you grew up on the humble chicken and dumplings, or maybe not. Dolly Parton and Chrissy Teigen both have excellent chicken and dumplings, but their styles are pretty different from each other. Chrissy makes fluffier dumplings and adds carrots and potatoes to her soup to make it more flavorful. Dolly on the other hand, makes a more classic dumpling that's flatter and sticks to the traditional broth and chicken in her soup. But which is better?

Dolly grew up in the Great Smokey Tennessee mountains in the 1950s . In a wooden shack of a home with no indoor plumbing, except a well in the sink. This is traditionally a very simple recipe that most poor folk ate. Same thing with Biscuits and Gravy. Doesnt look the best but tastes DAMN good. U cant beat tradition henny!

It’s supposed to be a simple recipe to stretch what few ingredients poor people have access to and be filling. Most people in hard times would use just the carcass and pick it clean, and then make the dumplings. It’s a easy way to make one chicken stretch 2 or 3 meals if you are frugal.

The difference is Dolly's is traditional and Chrissy's is the chicken and dumplings you get after a pay raise or a bonus because it has more ingredients (vegetables and herbs).

growning up in Western North Carolina (45 minutes from where Dolly was raised, theme park is great) and Eastern North Carolina, chicken and dumplings is a staple food that, growing up, signalled the beginning of autumn and winter. My mother and memaw have always used Bisquick biscuit dough in addition to boiling a whole chicken. It doesn’t suprise me that Dolly’s won, growing up and living here, you learn what works and what doesn’t in stews and comfort food. Even now, the disparity between chicken and dumplings, which imo are boiled biscuits in a way (much similar to Dolly and Chrissy’s combined), and chicken “slicks”, the cut, almost pasta like, dumpling in Dolly’s, is interesting to see. But without thinking too much on the subject, I would pick Dolly’s too- can’t go wrong with where something is made as a staple. Not to diss on Chrissy’s though, the color palette was definitely more appetising!

Now all you have to do to make Dollys a little more eye appealing is add a can of cream of chicken, salt & pepper, poultry season, sage, and a dash of paprika. At the end I chop up some green onion for color and taste too. One more easy trick if you don't want to make the dumplings by hand get a few cans of good biscuits and pinch quarter size pieces and put in. They will expand so I would not pinch any bigger than what I said. Let them cook until they sink then add your cooked chicken last w/green onions.

Chicken and dumplings are my favorite thing to make and I make it very similar to Dolly's version. That is the traditional southern way. A lot of people do Chrissy's version which is more of a chicken pot pie/ chicken soup with dropped biscuits. I've even seen people put peas in it smh. Traditional chicken and dumplings don't have veggies, only used to make the broth, then you take them out. That's the way my grandmother made it. Dolly's dumpling recipe was EXACTLY how I make it. Not the biscuit style Chrissy used. I'm all for the traditional southern comfort style.
