- It's that time of year again! Our Justin Pritchard knows a thing or two about winter tires - after all, he lives in northern Ontario - so we asked him for some recommendations on some of the most notable winter tires.
These observations are not based on controlled-surface testing of one specific vehicle in one specific satiation, but rather real-world in-the-driver’s-seat experiences in widely varying real-life conditions. Justin's put about a half-million kilometres on several dozen types of winter tires, and across hundreds of vehicles. Much of his driving takes place in severe winter conditions, travelling busy highways from southern and central Ontario, to his home up north in Sudbury.

Our 3 cars have been driving on Nokian Hak unstudded winter tires and WR all weathers as well as Nordmans (Nokian's 2nd line) for 15 years or more and they have never let me down.
With some hesitation and after a ton of research, I am now on my second winter on Continental Viking Contacts. The Contis worked great on my 16 Hyundai Genesis with AWD through a Winnipeg winter.
BTW, Gislaved, formerly an exclusive brand sold through Volvo dealers, is now a Continental sub-brand that, from all I have read, recycles Continental's previous model tread designs and technologies. Still decent tires and now a bit less expensive than some competitors
and General Tire (also a Continental brand) repackages Gislaved's previous tread designs.
The current General Altimax Arctic 12 model is a rebranded Gislaved Nordfrost 100 and the older General Altimax Arctic is a rebranded Gislaved Nordfrost 3
Big fan of Continental Viking Contact 7. The make my Prius feel like a CRV, and they make my CRV feel like a Jeep Wrangler!
All-weather tire does well here in Upper Midwest and I'm on 2nd set of Nokian WRG4 SUV on a 2012 Lexus GX460 and I put a set on a 2021 Highlander Hybrid. Prior to all weather tires I have used Bridgestone blizzaks dm-v1, dm-v2, Michelin Xice 2, and Yokohama Ice guards. Honestly the all-weather WRG4 does just as well as the pure winter tires and I can run it year round.
Kingston is my hometown and Fieldings is where I get my tires swapped. Very cool! 😎
My personal recommendation are the Continental WinterContact Si. Makes me feel super confident
ANY set of winter tires is better than summer tires during the Canadian winter. Period.
My favs were the Blizzaks but I do like the Dunlop Wintermaxx, it's a very quiet tire.
I've used Blizzaks for years and I liked them a lot. But I just bought a new car, and this winter I'm going to try Michelin Ice-X Snow. I'm in Canada, so we get extreme winter.
They are top performers in Canada best of Luck. Other one is Bridgestone ws90
I've had bridgestone ws80s, ws90s, and michelin xi3s, and the ws90s are the best snow tire, with the xi3s not quite as aggressive as the ws90, but use a bit less fuel. There's nothing wrong with the ws80 either. General arctic altimax winters are surprisingly good.
What many people don't understand is that on the road, you want the skinniest winter tire you can fit on the vehicle, preferably with a higher sidewall; if your brakes let you put on a smaller-diameter wheel, get the smallest wheel with a higher profile tire. For example, 215/45x17", 205/55x16", and 195/65x15" tires are the same diameter, and a narrower one will dig down to the road for grip and push less snow.
If anyone doubts this look at how rally cars are set up for pavement vs dirt/snow.
Totally agree, I have a 2020 CR-V with X-Ice Snow. I just bought a Kona N-Line and ordered WS90 for it.
X-Ice Snow is better for Traction and Handling in the Snow and perform well in all conditions. The WS90 is much better in braking and perform exceptionally in the wet and slush.
I guess I will get the chance to compare the 2 of them but I have to do more highway driving this year so I now have both vehicles with snow tires.
So no worries in any condition…
What the best winter tires you ever had ? Which is excellent for ice . Braking and acceleration ? Braking ? Cornering ?
I have Honda CR-V . 235-65-17

@@khalidsultan2716 -- bridgestone ws90 is the best winter tire i've used.
@@khalidsultan2716 I have Michelin X-Ice Snow on my CR-V, they are very good, your Honda dealer likely has a really good tire package for them.
Another option is Bridgestone Blizzak WS-90, a bit better for Braking and Cornering.
Michelin is better for Snow braking and acceleration.
Overall Michelin has the best wear resistance.
Bridgestone is better balanced than most, good in dry, wet, snow and ice.
We have Blizzak WS80s on our Escape and had X-Ice Xi3s on our Fusion and I much preferred the Michelins on the dry road, they handled like a good A/S tire. I think the Blizzaks do a bit better in the snow. I just got a GX470 and this year I decided to try severe snow rated Yoko Geolander A/T G015 and I've been completely unimpressed by the snow traction. Next winter I'll be buying winters again.
I know this is old, but i did the same thing, not the same tire brand exactly but same scenario.
A dedicated snow make a huve difference.
TY. Good to know.
Toyo Observe GSI6 ground up walnuts and bamboo in the rubber. they are awesome even on ice and they are affordable and quiet.
Good video! I'm on Nokian for the past 8 years

@@khalidsultan2716 Nokian, just like op said.
I would say any winter tires from the well known manufacturers will be fine. Those are: Continental, Michelin, Goodyear, Bridgestone, Pirelli and Nokian. Myself have Michelin X-ICE north 4 but have previously been using Nokkian Hakkapeliitta mostsly tires with studs.
Every winter it seams to be warmer and warmer so maybe ill try studless this winter and then test the Goodyear Ultragrip ice 2 or the continental viking contact 7.
X-Ice Snow last longer and are good throughout tread life. Can't say that about Blizzak WS90.
Dunlop WinterResponse2! Also Hankook w330 winter I*cept evo3
Any idea why blizzak dm v2 don’t give mileage warranty?
Thoughts on GSI-3 ICE on 08 CRV?
X-ice 3 are definitely not as good as Continental VikingContact 7s. The new X-Ice Snow match the VC7s well.

XICE has longer tread life than Blizack. Also better fuel economy with my experience.
Continental are great tires to
X ices are for Nordic climates, where there is dry snow and ice, the tires are excellent..., for wet and other conditions, a normal winter tire like the Michelin Alapin Sport 4 is excellent

You must be from mid or southern europe and then its true that the so called European winter tires are the best. But in places where winter are snowy and with a lot of ice then you have to use winter tires for those conditions.
Nokian Hakapeliitta way better
In its own league

Nokian is the best hands down.
From Buffalo, N.Y. I had Cooper Weather Master S/T2 snows and they did me OK. What is your opinion on these tires? They do make snowtires for a reason. I've always had snowtires on my vehicle for the winter season living in Buffalo. With the combination of down shifting at low speeds when you have difficulty stopping and having snowtires I've avoided many fender Benders.
Well you guys certainly know SNOW!!! 👍🇨🇦🇺🇸👍
Go 49ERS
My Hankook IPike RS's do just fine in Toronto
I agree and for the price, you can’t go wrong.👍

Nokian
Never buy winter tires from companies from countries which have zero snow or close to zero snow.
Good thing I'm canadian. Lol
What's the reasons behind not buying winter tires from companies where thier countries weather belie zero . I live in Canada . So what do you suggest for small SUV . CRV ?

The Michelin X Ice are garbage in wet snow/slush! My old General Altimax Arctic were 100 X better!
they are not garbage, but the wrong tires at the wrong time.
@@mariot.5178 I almost slid into oncoming traffic on the ice at much less than the speed limit! These tires were designed for ice! They also suck in slush and snow making them no better than an all-season tire! Not sure why you're trying to defend the tire when it has been the worst, most expensive, hyped, overrated winter tire that I have ever owned!

Find x ice 3 to have traction in snow will never purchase them again , you would have pay extra for the alpines for better grip in the snow .

I've used Goodyear Ultra Grip, Michelin X-Ice and Bridgestone WS-90s on my Mazda 6. The Goodyear's dry adhesion was amazing, almost as good as the OEM Michelin summer tires the car came with. On snow and ice their performance was not so great. Better, but I wanted more. The Michelin X-Ice were an improvement over the Goodyears, but I still managed to experience a few white knuckle drives on Alberta's unplowed roads. The WS-90s appear to be the best winter alternative on this Mazda chassis. Improved stopping on all surfaces except in the dry, and when the traction does let go, I find them very controllable and fun to drift.
My experience with the WS-90s has been good enough that I'm about to put them on my Ford Focus for this winter.
When would you lose traction with blizzaks ws90?
@@joepearlzz8504 Have you ever driven on snow or ice? In Alberta, winter driving results in wheel spin, or locking at almost every intersection. It doesn't take much throttle or braking to lose traction, even if you've got great tires.
Also, God created hand brakes for a reason...🤣
Btw, I did end up putting the WS90s on my Focus and last winter proved that they were the right choice. Cheers!
@@EdAb yes I have driven on snow and ice. I live in Quebec. The ws90 are supposed to be very good in deep snow and ice, that is why I asked about the traction.. I know nothing is perfect in this condition with fwd but I’m trying to find one of the safest tires..
@@joepearlzz8504 I don't think you can do much better than the WS-90s.
From November to April, Edmonton roads are basically packed snow over ice. In my opinion, the most dangerous conditions possible.
I grew up in Nova Scotia where the snow was deep and wet. You could drive in that snow until it was about 30 cm/1 foot deep, because the snow was 'sticky'. Beyond a foot, forget it. I used Hakkapeliitta snow tires there without studs. They were great, but that set up wouldn't work well in Alberta.
Here in Alberta, I often can't drive in foot deep snow, because of the packed ice. This video shows quite well what Edmonton roads are like. Get the WS-90s and drive happy.
