    Thank you for sharing 'Old Timer' ! You so remind me of myself, always looking for ways to short cut and save both time and effort. Then, in the dying minutes also the getting up from your knees, and no doubt like me from crouching too. At seventy four, I can still sprint and power walk but oh my goodness, getting down and up again or bending to pick up for instance a dropped coin , is so painful . Stay safe, stay well.

      We got rid of our low-slung sedans because it became difficult to get into and out of cars when the seats are a few inches off the ground. Driving a Honda CRV now. Seats are closer to butt height.

    I got to get me some piles for the log stops. Thats a great idea!

    I'm sure glad you showed me the PVC pipe trick. It saved me from putting rollers on mine. works wonders, thanks.

      I think any kind of plastic pipe will work. Mine happen to be poly because that's what was lying around. And I wish I could take credit for the idea, but I saw someone else doing it.

    I cut a lot of hemlock ( great stuff) yes the end always seams to be stringy with a sharp or dull blade.

  • @bklr61
    @bklr61 Рік тому

    Might be spruce. Been cutting quite a bit of spruce lumber lately, all has stringy finish whether blade is sharp or not. Looks good 👍 Great tip on the abs pipe. Will be using that one myself from now on.

      It's embarrassing to have so little knowledge and ability to tell what kind of wood I'm working with. Once the limbs are off, I'm lost.

    Excellent video. I just cut a poplar log with a brand new blade and also had stringy 'things' coming off. It appears there are some species that will always be stringy.

    • @OregonOldTimer

      I always assumed it was the result of a dull blade, but these cuts with a fresh, sharp blade confirm your observation.

    Sawdust causes mould on the boards and rust on the blade. In a barn it most likely would not make a difference. It happened once in six years no boards or cants are left this saw dust on them since that time. I stash my blades the same way you do. I’m going to quit some day. 😅

    • @OregonOldTimer
      @OregonOldTimer  2 роки тому +1

      I've seen mold a couple of times, both on green boards stickered but not cleaned of sawdust. I guess cleaning off the sawdust is worth the time and trouble on lumber that's not going to be used for a while.

    Stickers, more stickers. There never seem to be enough of them! Our club members just harvested 3 Gerry Oaks of large diameter. Will put some aside for you for next trip south. What is you max diameter over the bed and outboard? We were cutting 30”+ wood today.

    Just curious, since using your new sawbuck for awhile is there anything you would have done differently? I need to build one!

    • @OregonOldTimer
      @OregonOldTimer  2 роки тому +1

      A couple of things. I'd have oriented the uprights flat sides parallel to the sawbuck, at least on the cutting side, to extend saw reach and allow for greater volume. I'd have all horizontal bracing several inches below the firewood to avoid sawing into them at the end of the cut.
      Lumber Jack has a pair of videos on building a similar, but better, sawbuck.

    Love your videos, do you ever wish you bought the HM126 instead of the HM122? I'm trying to decide on which one to go with. I'll be milling the same size logs as you. I'm looking at $900. more to upgrade to HM126 with 14HP engine.

    You should get some help and raise your mill to waist height which would be easier on the back. Rig up a winch system to roll the logs up.

    • @OregonOldTimer
      @OregonOldTimer  Рік тому

      Exercise is good for my back, and loading logs is faster and easier with the mill on the ground.
      If I were doing this as a business and interested in speed and efficiency, I'd probably look at it differently.

    Hi Brother, I do enjoy your videos. I am impressed with your quality of work and being in a position to mill your own lumber especially at this time with the cost of it having gone through the roof, It is great. I tried leaving a message on one of your ocean cod fishing videos recently but it and old video about 2 years ago, so I'm not sure that you received it. So seeing this video is 7 days old, I figured that you may stand a chance of seeing and replying to me.
    I have copied that message and paste it here to save time. I hope you receive it because I have found that you tube has been blocking some of my messages. Here is my original message to you.;
    Hi Mr. Rush, ( Oregon Old Timer )
    Hope you and your family are well at this time. I have watched your video build of this beautiful Tillamook a few times now. The main reason for my comment at this time is that I have recently heard of Mr. Spira's sudden passing and the shut down of his boat plan website. R.I.P to Mr. Spira.
    Like most old customers of his, I too have waited too long to get a few more of his boat plans that I had intended to build. I have found the only way for me to get a few of his old plans is to get in touch with some of his old customers and hope that they still have the pdf copy. Since finances are a little tight for me at this time, I was hoping that you would be willing to trade a pdf copy of your 17ft Tillamook for my pdf copy of the 18ft Carolinian Dory, providing that you still have them. If you have hard a hard copy, can you take photos of them and send to my e mail? If you are willing, you can add g mail to my handle and I will send my copy as an attachment to you. Thanks and may you and yours have a blessed Christmas Holiday.
    Sincerely ,
    Therold Fenty
