Weird Doors for my Dirt Floor Shop
Windows and doors, and the shop will be closed in from wind and rain. Windows are in, now for the doors.
Normal doors are rectangular, square and plumb. Not these doors.

A Repair and Resawing Battens on My Woodland Mills Sawmill
Переглядів 7182 місяці тому
All siding boards on my dirt floor shop are up and waiting for battens to cover the gaps. Resawing 2x8s would be quick and easy, but first I made a repair to one of my sawmill modifications. When you've seen one batten nailed on, you've seen 'em all. I sped that part up 20X. I guess that's the same effect as time lapse. I said I'd give you the link to the video in which my sawmill's dust shield...
More Resawing Siding and a Bird's Nest in my Tool Belt

I hadn't used my tool belt in several years and there was a spider in one pocket and a bird's nest in another. I kept changing the window plan as I built the outer walls. How many and what size? When I finished the walls, I still hadn't made up my mind. Regardless, I needed to resaw more siding boards. I have lots of nominal 2x boards but very few thinner boards suitable for board-and-batten siding. So I selected some easy-to-get-at 2x8 and wider boards to put back on the sawmill and saw each one into two siding boards. It didn't go as well as I'd expected, of course. Building Walls for My Dirt Floor Shop

If we put things off long enough, we won't have to do them at all. That's because we'll be dead. As we age, time passes faster and the to-do list grows faster. Each year, there are things I don't get around to doing because there's plenty of time, and then it's next year already. This year, I will definitely scratch to projects off my long list. First is to enclose one bay of my large equipment...
Old Timer's Voice Is Damn Near Gone
Переглядів 7933 місяці тому
Sinus infections and bad colds affect voice. Many years ago, when I worked in radio, that transition between normal voice and laryngitis was ideal for recording commercials. It's been a long time since this has happened, and tomorrow, I may not be able to speak at all. I flew airplanes when my voice was completely gone and discovered that whispering into a microphone was as clear as voice. All ...
Should a Man In His 80s Be Up On a Ladder With a Chainsaw?
Переглядів 7434 місяці тому
Old age slows all of us. Thirty years ago, I routinely went up a ladder with my arms full of building materials as though it were a stairway. I can't do that anymore. I recognize that ladders are probably the most dangerous things most of us have around the house, and, combined with chainsaws, the danger is probably doubled,but that doesn't mean I don't use either one, singly or in combination ...
My Flood Control Flume Finally Finished, but Will It Work?
Переглядів 1,6 тис.5 місяців тому
I thought I'd finished and published this final installment of the flume project weeks ago. Some water has always seeped into our basement during heavy, sustained rain. There is a seasonal spring under the floor that we discovered before the floor was poured some years ago and laid drain pipe under the footing to carry that water outside. This winter, that spring flow more than filled the pipe ...

It wasn't the first time water has come into the basement after sustained, heavy rain, but this was more water from more places after less rain than in past years. Where was all the extra water coming from? A seasonal creek that flows down the mountain and is piped under the driveway a few yards from the house is different this year. When the rain-fed springs that feed the creek came to life th...

Basement Flood Day 4

Rain continues. The problem is not surface water entering the basement and the crawl space. Flooded Again, Days Two and Three

It was with trepidation that I went to the basement the day after my basement shop flooded. Rain had eased, but water still flowed from the spring that erupts under my shop floor during heavy rain. Hard to explain the satisfaction derived from viewing to the last frame. Anyone wanting to "escape" for 30 minutes, this is the video. I was (briefly) thinking you were going to build that door while on the hinges; a piece at a time! I was slightly disappointed when you took the partial frame down to finish it (haha).

    Just watching you on your knees made mine hurt! I built a 20" platform to raise my mill up so i dont have to bend over much to remove my lumber. I have a small excavator to load logs so i dont need a ramp to roll logs up to get them on the mill. Its about the same height as the trailer frame so it gives me lots of room under for the clamps to hang down.

    • @OregonOldTimer
      @OregonOldTimer 2 місяці тому

      Mill height is a trade-off, all right. If I had a tractor to lift logs, putting the mill higher would be better. If I milled only small logs, loading onto a raised mill by hand would be doable. But by having the mill on the ground, my back gets plenty of exercise.

    • @OregonOldTimer
      @OregonOldTimer 2 місяці тому

      I regard bending over and picking things up as a free version of what others pay gyms for. When I was 15, I was a scrawny pin boy in a bowling alley. After one busy league night, I calculated I'd picked up 19 tons of pins and balls from floor level to waist height. I couldn't believe it. Showed my calculations to the boss. He looked them over and said I may have figured it too light. A few years later, a doctor remarked on the musculature of my back. I told him of my early job. Ah, he said.

    Ha! I'm an ole cougar myself and I knew there was a better clamp. I called and talked to Woodland (and I do like them a lot) but they said no. I was about to order anyway and and suss it out but your video sealed the deal for sure. Had there been any issues? I am new at this and having fun building my shed as first project. • @OregonOldTimer

      The only negative to this installation is, the size of the log or cant I can use it on is less than with the standard clamps. However, one viewer suggest that, if I'd mounted it UNDER the track, I'd have more travel. I use the cam clamp all the time and seldom need to also use the screw clamps.
