Building a Flume With Lumber From My Sawmill In Hopes of Keeping a Creek Out of My Basement Shop

  • It's been two months since my basement shop flooded worse than ever before. Only now, the first of February, is concrete in the basement walls dry enough that I can fill all the cracks and pinholes with epoxy.
It's not the first time water has come into the basement after sustained, heavy rain, but this was more water from more places after less rain than in past years. Where was all the extra water coming from?
A seasonal creek that flows down the mountain and is piped under the driveway a few yards from the house is different this year. When the rain-fed springs that feed the creek came to life this past autumn, all the water disappeared into the ground over a span of several yards. Not until the creek was roaring full did water make it as far as the driveway. A clue maybe?
If you missed the first flood videos, well, the first videos of this year's basement flood, they're all in the playlist.

    Very relaxing to watch.
BTW, the verbal pauses are just fine, I am in no hurry while watching, and it gives me time to think about your projects (between hearing your thoughts). The pauses are your pace and personality and is what makes your channel unique (and enjoyable). Don't change a thing, thank you.

Thanks for your perspective. I'm the opposite in viewing. I watch so many channels, with two or three exceptions, I watch most at 1.5X and a few with slow talkers at 2X. (At 2X, geologist Myron Cook sounds normal!) I'm eager to get through then and get away from the computer to go DO things.
I think that, on the next video, I may include an unedited sequence followed by the same clip with dead air cut out.

Good to see you are still busy as usual. Always enjoy your videos. I’m a senior myself.

The HM122 is a Blessing for you. Still don't have mine yet! Wish I could be there to help you.

👍👍👍 Glad to see you back I was beginning to wonder about the water problem if you had got anything else done to help prevent it. I would not worry about the talking problem. I have COPD and you ought to hear me sometimes when I'm trying to think and do something or talk and do something at the same time and especially if someone asks me something when I'm having an anxiety attack I'll give them some kind of crazy answer you're doing a great job. 😎☕

Thank you, David. I'll continue to clip 'dead air' when I can, but after your comment and those of others, maybe I won't be so diligent.

It's good to see you are continuing on the water control. I was surprised by my voice when we started doing videos. My first thought was 'Holy cr#p, is that what I sound like!' I sound different to myself in my head.

We all sound different to ourselves. I worked in radio for several years when I was young, so I got used to it early.

Excellent quality on the re-sawing! They look great!
I do as you with a 'riser' to assist re-sawing. To help hold the board, I will add distributed weight on top. Usually a couple of short (i.e. easy to handle) 6x8's placed end to end.

Good idea. Faster and easier than messing with clamps or weights that have to moved from in front of the saw and put back behind it. I once showed myself walking on the bowed board I was sawing ahead of the saw, pulling rather than pushing it. Safety police went nuts. ua-cam.com/video/d7i9c7iSjlg/v-deo.html

I totally agree with you, I'm always very nervous when sawing rt over the tops of the log stops. I haven't made wooden ones yet but that is another thing on my to do list. Looking forward to your next video.

And more rain is coming your way. We get spared this time. Too bad those are not log flumes too!

Only a little rain the past few days and creek flow is much lower. That'll make it easier to wrestle new flume sections into place.

The video is fine, more natural with the pauses. If ya find yourself in a bind i could help ya wrestle stuff around. offering a days labor out of appreciation for the knowledge youve given me. I live in Nehalem.
