I feel like when Baard is involved, a time signature is more a recommendation than a requirement lol
Reminds me of Danny Carey in that regard. As soon as you think you have the time signature figured out, it switches and then your lost and confused if you even had it figured out to begin with. Danny never even plays to a click or metronome he hates them lol.
I’m actually lucky enough to have had a drum lesson off him and he showed me some of the patterns in this song. He’s a great guy and is even more impressive up close.
@photag216 He is a Norwegian drummer, been at it since he was a young boy. Leporus and Rendezvous Point are his bands now, he has done a lot of other stuff, played for Borknagar, Solefald, In Vain.... And a LOT of various stuff, won the world champions ship on electric drums I remember.

Just watched them live in Baltimore...they were absolutely phenomenal. I wish they would do a tour as the main act and play a full set.
They just did. 40 concerts in like 45 days
They did in México and it was awesome
I thought Baard tossed his stick at one point to signal the other drummer that the live dub was done, so i asked him. He said that was pure coincidence and that he breaks sticks so often, because he keeps playing with old sticks, that it's very common during takes for him to lose a tip or break a stick.
This song was on repeat for probably 4 weeks when he posted the vid.
And nice catch on the telephone receiver commentary.. yes some sound engineers will use defunct telephones, military radio receivers, and even old WWII headsets to record snares, high hats etc because of their exceptional upper range, and it gets really nice crisp layers to the sound.

you can also check out, a now quiet band, Agent Fresco. Keli (their drummer who looks a bit like the muppet drummer) is AMAZING, has an obsession with linear drumming and man can that guy make a groove.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: this composition is one of the best "prog" compositions ever! It has great drama, great beauty and an unusual second half. Stunning music altogether..

Thank you! One of the few drum reactions that give some actual insight on what he's doing, like the 11/4 time signature, the stick and beater technique, the china placement, and "PewDiePie" LOL. Great video.
BTW, Baard said the reason he put the china there is to avoid overplaying it. So it's uncomfortable on purpose!

He is using that technique where his thumb is always loose. I think that gives much more stick weight manipulation then some standard techniques. Great video 😁
This is probably one of my all-time favorite songs and I love coming back to this video. I think 'Moon' is his best drumming performance though. Love that video.
Baard is giong to be the best drummer in the world when he gets to Gavin's age. The kid is in his twenties and he is killing it.

I saw an interview with him recently & he said he like an extra snare with a lower pitch & lots of toms so he can play melodically, which kinda blew my mind!
kinda like danny carey from tool, I heard his drums are tuned to match the key the majority of their music
Sudden Swarm yeah, they also play in the same key for almost all their music for that reason
What's really surprising to me, and a little bit sad I think, is that a lot of drummers do NOT do that. We often think of drums as a rhythmic instrument, but drummers have so much melodic possibilities if they take the time to look for it. His set altogether is not the biggest, but he actually uses all the pieces of his drumset a good amount in every song, unlike some drummers who have the biggest drumset they can, but rarely use a lot of it. He really makes good use of that slightly bigger-than-normal set.

I feel like Baard fit's into the same sort of category as Tomas Haake from Messhugah. As someone said in the comments on a performance of bleed, "Tomas is your drum teacher's favorite drummer." I feel like Baard is that for any drummer lucky enough to come across him. haha

You'll notice Baard leads a lot of his sections with his head a lot. He's a very well-trained, experienced drummer. It's inspiring how aggressive he can be at times but also how composed and completely methodical.
The accents, the syncopation and the technique was just off the fkn chains!!!!! Seriously man, that is fkn talent and a half right there! I've been playing since I was like 3, and I couldn't even have pulled off that timing to be so spot on with those offbeat accents, and the rudiments he was playing!

I came across this playthrough video 12 days ago. It was my first introduction to Leprous and I have to say, I am hooked!! Mind blown. Nice to see a reaction vid that confirms I'm not just crazy. ;)
I also was lucky to have a lesson with Baard about a year ago and we talked extensively about stick technique. He's got a very loose grip. It's pretty much thumb and middle finger.
Handing Baard sticks throughout was great. And the fills! Much wow.

I've seen Baard playing live many times. His drumming has a very distinctive sound, very personal and identifiable. IMHO he's one of the top drummers around. Thanks for the breakdown :-)

I love Leprous and Baard. There’s something about him that is so entertaining and magnetic. This is by far my favorite song from their recent album. Love the analysis. This was honestly one of the best "reaction" videos I've ever seen. You broke down pretty much everything there is to analyze, and did it well and with clear experience and expertise. I'd recommend checking out the "Bonneville" drum play through by Leprous as well. It was my favorite until this play through came out!

Baard is called a Prodigy by his former bandmated from Borknagar. He even recommend the new drummer to them when he leave and focus on Leprous. I believe he had a drum solo on their concert in Wacken 2016.

The telephone could also be a part of a ClearCom style system, so he can pick it up and talk to the people in the recording booth. That's a very common thing.
Pretty sure that in this case the phone is part of the snare sound. I’ve used a mic like this before. If the guy in the control room can hear the drums, he can hear the drummer talk. It’s usually the guys in the control room who need to setup a mic to talk to the performer (unless the console has a built-in one)
Pat Flanigan You’re not wrong, but it’s also not uncommon for ClearCom to be used. It really depends on who runs the studio and their personal preferences. I know I personally prefer a traditional clearcom phone setup.

I love the outro to this so much. I still think of it as 11/8 (or whatever groupings of 11 you want to call it), but with the accents flipping every second bar. So if it’s a 2 bar phrase, the first bar has those crash accents on the on-beats (1, 3, 5, 7…) and then the second bar has them on the off-beats (2, 4, 6…). Such an interesting groove.

I find it odd that so many musicians reacting to this song struggle with the fairly straight forward 11/4 pattern (8+3 for the song, 6+5 for the outro). What Bård does brilliantly (which might confuse some) is layering the patterns, so he's got 11/8 and 11/4 running at the same time. Works great for these odd time signatures.

I saw Leprous for the first time maybe 3 years ago. Was a bit tipsy... and afterwards Baard and Tor sold merch. I talked with them and shamelessly asked for signed drumsticks 😂 And then I GAVE THEM AWAY 🤯😭🤣😭😭 To a dear friend who had been a fan for years. She was so happy. I really want to go back in time. Ask for more signed drumsticks. I am so stupid. Kind. But stupid.

The two that I've made before this one have been considerably more popular than any of my other videos, so I feel like I have to keep making them, but I don't want to do that exclusively. I saw someone say "What happened to Baard on the new album? It's like he isn't even there." on a Leprous fan page. Yet this song exists... I think people confuse well mixed drums written for the song with "Easy drums".
Interesting thing about the song: yeah, it is 11/4 (at least I think that's the bar count), and the last electric cello hit is at 11:11, ending the song.
