The bass drum setup is not by accident. Having it that loose means resonance almost goes away, and it gives far less bounce allowing for that real dig in of the head. The dig in gives a very hard attack. So all in all you end up with a very dry bass drum sound with a steep attack. It's pretty hard to play with. Basically you get a thud instead of a boing.
if you ever get around to doing another Leprous song, I would recommend the song Moon from Baard on his channel. it's genuinely one of the best drumming videos in my opinion.
Watched this video on your recommendation. The drumming was great but I think this song is better. And the camera work on that video was awful. Reminded me of the Oceans Ate Alaska Escapist video. Camera man just doing way to much thinking he is being artistic.
There are actually a few videos out there where Baard addresses the way he holds his drumsticks. In fact, he said it gives him more dynamic freedom. For the average person, it's as you said, a "no-no". However, when Baard plays the way he does, it's hard to argue the way he holds his sticks is not a great idea. Which is just another way of saying, don't try to fix something that works! Baard, at least in my opinion, is probably one of the greatest living drummers. I might even go as far as to say THE best living drummer but that might be me getting carried away. :P In any case, he's phenomenal. Loved the reaction. Thanks Jason!
Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm assuming he holds his sticks in the same manner Mike Portnoy does to increase power on the back beat but i'll check out the videos of this interview. I have done a new Baard reaction this week so please check that out.
I really recommend you trying out using your middle finger as fulcrum when playing. It really makes you smoother when you are playing busy dynamic notes. Not ideal for those who beat the drums like they owe you money though.
what i got out of the special grip form watching an interwiev with him is you can play for a longer time with out getting tired Do alot of Leprous oh and Haken
Apparently the base pad being held on the pad gives a more consistent starting point for the faster kicks .ps have you seen the Chris turner and Thomas lang duel , triggered...
@@kevinbrown3082 Yeah i just mean how you pronounce lord is the same with a B. And thats board, you are right haha. Im norwegian, drummer and I know Bård :)
Hey, thats me. Duck yes! Great reaction video!
Quack 🦆
The second drummer is Simen Sandnes, another norwegian drummer and friend of Baard.
That last big fill before the weird end section. The one he had to stand up to finish! That’s committed drumming.
He is a talented drummer 100%. You can tell he is a student of the instrument.
Baard said in an interview that he had the classic technique until a prof at university, had him change it to that looser more open style.
And here I was thinking professors weren't as smart as they are cracked up to be. Obviously I was wrong

@@glacieractivity awesome! thanks for sharing!
I'm a fan of Kolstad since he was a little, performing street drum in Oslo.. now I'm a fan of you.

Baard said the reason for the china placement was something along the lines of to avoid over-playing it / not be too tempted to play it too much.
That makes a lot of sense.

I'll give that a watch at some stage.

plini's glass bead game, drummer is Chris Allison
I recommend Baard Kolstad - "Moon" or "Rewind"
Baard rhymes with "bored" as mentioned earlier, also it is Leprous to rhyme with "Leprosy" without the "y" as in the disease, no worries! :-)
Everyone needs a drumstick guy
But mine would be carrying chicken, because I don't play drums
Would love to see you check out 24 Light Years by Vola (drum playthrough)
I may give this a listen at some point.Leprous seem very strict with blocking videos to their music without permission so it may take a while.
Go watch some of his pre-Leprous street drumming videos. Amazingsaur.

Then there's Eloy my god what a beast
Board. Baard is pronounced “Board”. He said so in an interview once. Or twice even….
Amazing! thank you. It's difficult to pronounce name every now and then. Next video i'll take note.
its pronounced like lord.

I’m sure its B not L🤔
@@kevinbrown3082 Yeah i just mean how you pronounce lord is the same with a B. And thats board, you are right haha. Im norwegian, drummer and I know Bård :)
Leprous is an English word you know, no need to pronounce it like it's French 😅
