It's a game designed for kids, really. Not by dealing with their age directly, but because it is the only age group that has the time to brute force their way through the game.
There's a reason older generation gamers like us are so hardcore. There was no easy difficulty and anything that wasn't trying to tell a convoluted story like JRPGs back then was mercilessly slaughtering you in the game until you either got it or quit it.

Fun fact about Frogger 2: swampy’s revenge, the Gold mines music from that game was actually sampled and sped up to be used in the haunted ship level of Sonic Rush Adventure
Sonic Rush Adventure didn't sample Frogger 2, they both just happened to use the same beat that probably came from a third party music loop library. I remember hearing one of the same beats from that level in an episode of the Mythbusters years ago.
Actually owned this game YEARS ago and yes, I did beat it and yes, it was painful. What's more there's a special ending you get when you collect all the golden frogs in each world. I guess I’m a wacko, because I mastered this game. I played it so many times through that I memorized all the patterns, all the shortcuts, every level’s idiosyncrasies. Yes, this game can be hard, but once you get the feel of a level, you will own it. Even watching these brief gameplay clips again after all these years, I can feel the rhythm. That said, I had the PC version growing up, which apparently had a more forgiving timer on most levels (e.g. Big Boulder Alley, one of the most challenging levels in the game, gave you 99 seconds on PC but much less on PlayStation). Why that is, I will likely never know.
Not sure if anyone has said this yet, but there's a reason why so many things in this game seem like they're moving too fast, it's because they actually are. Strangely despite debuting in North America, the game was actually programmed in the PAL format which runs at 50Mhz compared to 60Mhz in NTSC we actually played it on, and the devs somehow overlooked that. Thus, the entire game is running over 15% faster than it was designed to.

The gameplay was satisfying enough that I'd keep coming back to it, and the harder levels would take loads and loads of attempts, but that wasn't a bad thing as a kid. This game obviously offer much more than the original, and I find it very enjoyable to this day, may I say even more enjoyable than the original. The multiplayer was a blast too.
so many retro reviewers do the "putting the game in the console action shot" and then fizzle off of doing it, im so glad you havent stopped including those shots, despite being so small, it's so satisfying every time lol
This was the first video game that I've ever played in my life. While I do agree that this game is frustratingly challenging, I still truly believe this game did show good efforts into showing the platforms and the obstacles that Frogger has to face on each level. I also thought the 3D animation for its time was pretty cool and the gameplay was pretty decent, despite how frustrating it is to complete.
Can you make a video on Star Fetchers, it's a game that I think deserves more attention. Only the pilot (episode 1) is out, so your video would bring more people to know about it.
Swampy’s Revenge’s main theme has been in my playlist for many years now, and I thought I was the only one who, not only played these games, but also, enjoyed them. The first one was also extremely underrated. It’s a breath of fresh air to hear more about these games tbh.
Oh yeah i remember the Tv show for Ghostly adventures i liked up until the second season were it became nothing but fart jokes and i really hated that the main "mystery" just turned into a running joke like "Ohh here is a new antagonist character maybe they'd had something to do with Pac's parents!!!" sorry for the tangent.
@@daredrogers3884 I'm still glad Super Smash Bros was nice enough to give Pac (along with a few others) there one design yet and I'm still surprised out of all character Frogger himself Isn't In Smash at all.
Okay, but imagine Frogger as an isekai anime where he gets hit by a truck, but it takes him to the world of the side scrolling platformer Frogger games.
So....so much childhood. I remember playing this on the pic for so many hours. His complaints about the difficulty is NOT over-exaggerated. This is one of the few games I just couldn't beat. I may tackle it again soon. But man is this game a ball crusher. If you like hard games, play this. While it can be frustrating, it IS rewarding too. So I wouldn't say it isn't fun. Depends on your view on it.
Wow, Frogger! I'm excited to see where this goes as I only played the one featured in this video back in the day! I imagine this channel has quite a few younger viewers in their early 20's or so who might be surprised at how mind-blowing it was to play games with multiple levels back in the day! When the NES came out with Super Mario Bros. no one was ready and many kids assumed they had beat the game after the first level since most people were used to games being a single screen. When the second level pops up and you go underground it's made kids go 😱🙊. The first time I seen a couple of guys playing Contra my heart sped up and I was like, "I NEED THAT GAME RIGHT NOW PLLEEAASSSSEE!!!" This was back in 1988 I believe, and my 5 year old self didn't know or care about being late to the new video game scene. I only knew how colorful it looked compared to the Atari I had at home and I guess that's where my excitement for video games really began in earnest. One thing I thought was interesting in the video was the fact that the OG Frogger had been in arcades only a decade prior to this game being released. That's crazy to me! In the course of a decade video games really came a long way! They move from 2D to 3D can't be understated; it blew everyone's minds. Most were like me who didn't play games on PC, so it was as if 3D gaming had only just been invented. Resident Evil may have had bad voice acting, but the fact it was there at all was amazing! That huge leap forward really helped video games become the juggernaut industry it is today.
I remember an old frogger game in an 8 bit techno style on my dad's old I pad. One of the soundtracks was a instrumental remix of that famous daft punk song. I enjoyed it. Edit: I remember a few more games, I could tell y'all.
9:33 "It becomes a matter of getting lucky enough"...Me and 10-year-old me would like to kindly tell you Git Gud seriously, this game is not a difficult as your complaints make it seem...
DUDE, my nostalgia levels are tripping right now! This game was my jam as a little kid. I never played the original arcade titles, so this was my introduction to the series. My family had it for our PC, and I can't count how many times I played it on that old cube monitor (I feel old, knowing my generation will be the last to remember those). The 3D animated intro was something I always looked forward to. I don't remember ever beating it though, I think the farthest I got was the factory level. Sigh, memories...
I remember playing Frogger on the PC in Daycare growing up, thanks for bringing back some amazing memories, I'm gonna see if I can get a hold of it again
Perhaps its the nostalgia glasses, but I loved this game as a kid. Figuring out where the frogs were and having to rush there made the challenge so much more rewarding to finish. Once you played a level you unlocked the next, and really didn't have to go back to the old ones, except to beat your hs. It was good that the game was so hard, as it added a lot of playtime to it. Not every game is gonna be easy. That being said, the game timings that forced you to die if it didnt line up were bs. That much I'll give you. Other than that, it was a phenomenal game that deserves praise for the time it came out in.
Man, I'm so glad you covered one of my most nostalgic games from the PS1! I'd love to see you look at that Space Invaders game (or maybe even Tetris Plus for PS1 as I think it's one of the more interesting iterations of Tetris).
You can do a video on the most obscure videogame that I've never played/heard of and I would still watch it. Your writing and narrating is always top notch man.
I keep forgetting Frogger had an entire franchise in the early 2000's, it was basically that era of gaming where arcade titles were revived as a means of competing with Crash Bandicoot and Spyro's success, especially Pac-Man and Frogger. Then after that era ended, they just faded into obscurity and went back to being seen as the initial arcade games, all while more "gritty" and "realistic" M-rated games went into style.
I used to play the Frogger GBA games on repeat as a kid. I don't know why, but man did I play those a lot. I hope to review them on my channel some day...
Nice vid! Also kinda glad you mentioned that Space Invaders game, I got the ps1 one and it's a very happy memory (except when I was a lot younger and bosses scared me) That'd be a cool thing to look at in detail sometime but for now I'm gonna cosy up ready for frogger!
Seeing all the Frogger games and realizing you're going to talk about all or most of them really excites me. No one talks about those later ones in any detail.
Childhood favorite right here making it to the end is so rewarding it was for me as a kid and more so as a adult...oh one thing sometimes you can hop so fast going over the baby frogs like in the factory level and can completely skip them. Still love this game to death.

Ah yes, one of my childhood games. The game that made me realize I was a masochist.

And you are telling me, this is rated E for everyone
yeah really, if that were ps2 tier graphics it would at least be T for sure.
I beat this game as a 5 year old in 2000 for PC and I still don't know how I did it.
Does anyone remember Frogger’s Adventure: Temple of the Frog? I had it as a kid
same
I love that game! The music is very memorable.
I like how your hairstyle is reflecting your earlier videos, Brings me back man!
You meantioned Space Invaders, Space Invaders Extreme on PSP and DS is a great game.
space invaders extreme 2 is even better
I've always been curious about these Frogger games, glad to see you're taking us on a tour of them!
Frogger truly deserves a comeback out of all of this! Just try not to end up how Pac-Man made his comeback with Ghostly Adventures.
I clicked on this video in a heart beat because this was my first ever video game of all time. Good video dude.
"Well I'll be go to hell."
I never tought of ever being interested in the frogger series, Nice vid man! Now i want to see them all>:3!
15:00 Hey James, you ever play a little game called Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes?
Okay, but imagine Frogger as an isekai anime where he gets hit by a truck, but it takes him to the world of the side scrolling platformer Frogger games.
So....so much childhood. I remember playing this on the pic for so many hours. His complaints about the difficulty is NOT over-exaggerated. This is one of the few games I just couldn't beat. I may tackle it again soon. But man is this game a ball crusher.
If you like hard games, play this. While it can be frustrating, it IS rewarding too. So I wouldn't say it isn't fun. Depends on your view on it.
Dude, when I saw a gameplay of Frogger not long ago, I kinda wish for this video and you did! I'm so happy, this game was my childhood.
NitroRad: The controls are tight and responsive, the level variety is good, the music is pretty great and the menus are cool!
Also NitroRad: 15:13
I mean, none of that really matters when the level *design* is atrocious.
I played frogger 2: swampys revenge on my parents big goofy gateway so much back in early 2000s.. and some how it was blocked from my mind until now
I remember an old frogger game in an 8 bit techno style on my dad's old I pad. One of the soundtracks was a instrumental remix of that famous daft punk song. I enjoyed it.
Edit: I remember a few more games, I could tell y'all.
My Frogger: Toy Trials for the Nintendo DS is pretty great, IMO
Man this takes me back. Owned this for pc when I was young. I loved it back then. great times!
How do you make anything seem interesting?
For real, he can talk about the history of bread and I'd be like "Damn it, I wanna know more"

Joshua Wood Yes, Always 💙🥺
Only recently subscribed but, totally get pumped about new episodes, and i am scared of when I run out of old ones to watch!👍🏻
Sigh, memories...
remember when they said he was gonna be in smash?
I... I probably would have preferred that to be honest.
I remember making up a moveset for him years ago. That was quite a phase of mine.
I remember playing Frogger on the PC in Daycare growing up, thanks for bringing back some amazing memories, I'm gonna see if I can get a hold of it again
your best thumbnail yet
bonus point for mentioning the ps1/n64(?) Space Invaders game.
Classic Frogger was the first game I ever played.. Good times.
Nice vid! Also kinda glad you mentioned that Space Invaders game, I got the ps1 one and it's a very happy memory (except when I was a lot younger and bosses scared me)
That'd be a cool thing to look at in detail sometime but for now I'm gonna cosy up ready for frogger!
Seeing all the Frogger games and realizing you're going to talk about all or most of them really excites me. No one talks about those later ones in any detail.
I haven’t seen Frogger on PS1 in 20 years and as soon as I saw that level select menu all the memories came rushing back.
Childhood favorite right here making it to the end is so rewarding it was for me as a kid and more so as a adult...oh one thing sometimes you can hop so fast going over the baby frogs like in the factory level and can completely skip them. Still love this game to death.
