Man, people loved using that trademark “Dreamworks smirk” in the mid 2000’s didn’t they?
... Well, at least it ain't the "Smalm brows". That stuff be 69. >):^'
Even Disney when they got envious of how big Shrek 1 and 2 were. Cars gave that smirk to Lightning on the poster, and Chicken Little was Disney's attempt at doing a "subversive fairy tale" similar to Shrek but it failed because Chicken Little had barely likable characters,

This looks like one of the most remake-able games I've seen. All of the issues can be easily tweaked.
I dunno about that frog vagine though
Some Guy just tweak the texture.
Too bad the franchise is owned by konami. They would either bastardise it or fill it with microtransactions/ paid dlc

An ESSENTIAL part of game design is conveyance: Being able to communicate to the player how the game functions and what to do to win. It’s really frustrating and sad to see a fun game with some fresh ideas stumble into some BAD pitfalls of game design.
Trial and error is a design philosophy that’s been long dead ever since the advent of longer games, and it’s for good reason: It’s INCREDIBLY frustrating. The easiest way to lose a player is to remove them from the cycle of struggle and reward. If they’re struggling for too long because of the game itself and NOT their own mistakes, you’ve lost them.
A bad game fumbling is one thing, but an otherwise good game falling into these traps is just kinda depressing to me. They’re the hardest games to give an opinion on
The first time I played Mega Man 2 (pretty recently, believe it or not,) I absolutely fell in love. I had only played parts of MM1 and MMX before at a much younger age (and a small chunk of MM2,) and while I liked them, I didn't appreciate them as much as I do now. MM2 far surpassed my expectations and made me a Mega Man fan. I was amazed by how well it held up and just how fun it was. It captured my imagination in a way no other NES game ever had. Then I made it to Heat Man's stage.
The stage is fine for the most part, up until the third to last obstacle, which is jumping over some pillars with the aid of those disappearing blocks. Annoying, but not too bad. Then you hit the second to last obstacle, and this is where everything falls apart. You have to platform over a very large pit with nothing but those same disappearing blocks to jump on. They appear in strange formations rather often, and the timing they spawn in makes it very unnatural. Maybe that doesn't get across how bad it is, but it requires a ton of trial and error. No player will be able to get through it on their first try without either insane luck or Item 2, which I didn't know about at the time. The last obstacle is just an enemy, nothing notable.
This section isn't as terrible or difficult as the minecart section or the fire boss described in this video, but it's a big low point in an otherwise wonderful game.
That's why I find it funny that the Dark Souls series and other Souls-like games have become so popular in recent years, because they follow that bad trial and error game design while also unfairly killing you in a couple of hits so you can't actually learn anything without hours of attempts. Same thing with hard mode MMO boss fights, like the ones in Final Fantasy XIV. I'll never understand why people are willing to spend 8 hours fighting one boss fight (only to do it again and again on the next fights) when they could just be beating a good game instead with that time.
Jordan3D as a souls fan, i can see where you’re coming from, but generally your first boss takes hours. After that you get a feel for the game and unfair deaths happen less and less. It’s like punch out. You can only get by on powering through enemies for so long. The games punish you for being greedy. Once you learn patience and start learning enemy attacks and know when to be wary and have your guard up and when you don’t need to, the game gets immensely satisfying.
That can work for some certain games like cuphead or JSAB
Jordan3D People are willing to spend hours on one boss because they like the challenge. Dark Souls, barring a few exceptions such as the Bed of Chaos, is full of well designed boss fights where any deaths are purely your own fault. You didn’t dodge at the right time, you got too greedy with damage, or some other mistake you can learn from with each death. The satisfaction of finally killing that one boss that was giving you trouble is immense.
"How did this get by?" Immediately afterwards, Frogger is standing in a pentagram.
I can forgive satanism, but I draw the line at frog vagingy
I'd say the points are meant to represent the 5 worlds, but there are 7 worlds, so it was deliberate...

TLOU2...
@@DCGMatthew1 it sucks that a small group made criticizing or praising the game like navigating a minefield
Wholeheartedly agree. The sole reason I've only played through Dark Souls 1 a single time is because of those last two Anor Londo archers. (Specifically, the one on the right). It's essentially just a single normal enemy, but it's placed in such an awkward spot that there's no good way to get past it, cheese or not, any single hit it lands instantly kills you, and you need to go through a LONG walk (upwards of 10 minutes) just for a new shot at it.
That's how I felt while playing Nioh 2. The game is pretty fun and challenging, but then you have some totally bullshit levels and bosses that makes you want to pull your hair out.

Damn that fire boss reminds me of how I never legitimately beat the final boss of Bomberman 64: The Second Attack. He pulls the same cheap tactic except he attacks where you stand at the same time as where you'll be so you have to run and then stop at a precise moment! So unfair!

"A little funk, hip hop, bluegrass, rock n' roll,

19:14 "However, there is one [boss] that, like the minecart mission, it took me like four to five hours to beat because of how poorly designed it is."

Yeah, I also had to basically pause spam at that segment just to figure out wtf was going on because I didn't have any fancy smancy video recording software to do it for me.
as someone who finally found this game again after years and never made it to the fire boss back then but suffered through the minecart level
oh boy i would have raged at that level
12:58 This reminds me of the start of Volt Kraken AKA Squid Adler's stage in Mega Man X5 where they start you on a ride chaser and the first pit shows up before the word "READY" is off screen.
That stage is a study in frustration, especially if you're trying to get all of the energy cores.
im glad dying has no punishment in that game lol
X5 loves just killing you randomly for some reason, it does it there and in like five other places in the game, but it doesn't really matter that much because the game also loves throwing tons of checkpoints and running out of lives doesn't do anything; the same is basically true of X6 as well, though the bad design is much more on the nose and it doesn't give as many checkpoints as you'd like in the hardest stages, namely Metal Shark Player and some of the Gate stages. Knowing how everything in that game works can make it surprisingly fun though, in spite of its numerous problems. The best example is Blaze Heatnix's stage, which is misery blind but you can just cruise through it if you know what you're doing.
@@hoodedman6579 X6 in my opinion was a lot better on the maverick levels front, but way way worse in the final levels. The collapsing ceiling part where you have to hang on the side of small platforms over a bottomless pit was particularly egregious.
“READY” No I was not ready

While looking for the individual who composed that rap number (shut up, that was an important mission) I found the voice cast and it turns out this game's voice cast is from Canada.
Kathleen Barr as Frogger and Scott McNeil as Lumpy I recognize especially.
And *especially* with Kathleen Barr cuz she kinda seeps into the voice she did for Kevin from Ed Edd n Eddy at times.
Also, the snowboard controls sound strangely identical to how the board controls in Sonic 06 were.

I doubt you’ll see this, since you’re a busy guy, but James, buddy, thank you so much for bringing lesser known games out of obscurity and giving them a chance.
You’re such a refreshing gaming critic compared to all of those people who do nothing but talk about popular games and literally nothing else because that gets them views and subscribers, whereas you on the other hand truly care about the lesser guys.
I’ve shared your videos with my friends, and they really like your work, too, because of just how passionate you are.
I’d also like to take a moment to thank you for directly influencing my perspective on gaming, how it’s always important to branch out and give these hidden gems a try. This actually reminded me a LOT of *Yooka-Laylee:* A fun and enjoyable core-experience that gets bogged down and systematically destroyed by frustrating gamedesign decisions, poor conveyance, lack of polish, and worst of all: A badly thought-out minecart minigame.
mincart sections needed to die with the first dk country game, they never felt consistent in that game let alone anything else. Some sick bastard in the design teams of those sections always just decides "yeah lets make the physics a disgusting hybrid of realistic and inconsistent". By that I mean making jumps short and heavy in games that otherwise usually have floatier movement. Also you can never tell if the typical behavior of "holding jump as you jump to make it higher" applies or not.

I love that quote "Thankfully, we end it on a high note, though it took a Heck of a rocky road to get there." Because, in all honesty. The game literally is a coming of age story for Frogger. Ups. Downs. As well as All arounds. That's what it is to live. We get to the point where you think you know what to do, but the things from how you perceived the results, change the way of thinking. Like Young Adults and Dream Careers. As well as the fact that you can't go back with your upgrades, once using them, besides resetting the game. You can't change the past, but you can prove how you evolved from it.
It's like The (first) Muppet Movie's first song, The Rainbow Connection.
"Rainbows are visions, and only illusions. And rainbows have nothing to hide." The creativity is there, it's just not enough to blind you from the facts on how to get to the destination.
I hope you take this as some sort of advice, regarding story.
All of you.

This personally is my favorite Frogger game, as I can look past the whole couple of bad moments. Take those few bad moments out and you have the best Frogger game, period. Sadly though those bad moments do exist, but a lot of it can be avoided if you know they exist in the first place. Still really sucks that they exist though. Even with those problems, I still think it's the best Frogger game personally. That soundtrack and atmosphere is just amazing.

That fire bat boss is more unforgiving than most Dark Souls bosses. Seriously, at least they telegraph their attacks and allow for SOME error on the part of the player.
Hearing someone struggle against the underground boss is probably the most relatable thing for me.
