Bullshit. No one can come back from this catastrophe. This is one of those things that drives a man to drink, to find Jesus at the bottom of a bottle. No way, man. You're fucking with me.
To think, when Caddicarus got to Stage 2 on Bubsy 3D he asked "Has man ever reached this point in the universe before?" And a year later, Nitro made it to the ending. That's a real *accolade.*
Gonna be honest, I kinda felt sorry for you in the end, lol. This really does look like one of the worst games of all time, it's not even bad in the way where you can have fun because of how bad it is, it just looks frustrating. I have a lot of respect for you for actually playing through the entire game though to give a proper review unlike most reviewers. Also, from what I've heard, Bubsy 3D was originally supposed to be a Sega 32X game, which explains the lack of textures in the graphics. They still could've updated the graphics when releasing it on PS1, though.
Wait I just realized. When you fire the atoms at enemies, you're firing an atom at 'em. This game stinks but there's good puns if you squint really hard.
Fun fact: The developer of this game was purchased by Sony Interactive Entertainment in the late 1990s and was renamed to Bend Studio. This studio would go on to develop the Siphon Filter series for the PS1 and PS2, Uncharted: Golden Abyss for the PS Vita, and are currently developing Days Gone for the PS4.
It's amazing to think the developer who made this train wreck, would later create the Syphon Filter Series, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Resistance: Retribution, and Days Gone, that's a hell of a redemption arc.
Oh boy, if in-depth analysis of Bubsy 3D is what you want, I suggest you look up Ulillillia. He is a *big* fan of Bubsy and made some videos exploring this game.
12:53 what we observe is one the effects of stress induced by playing Bubsy 3D. It can make people confuse question mark blocks with exclamation mark blocks.
Honestly, the part about that EGM quote that stings the most isn't the fact that it was twisted to hell, but rather the fact that it didn't _have_ to be - "Bubsy 3D climbs back to the top of the yarn ball. Gamers looking for 3-D action should check it out!" would've sufficed perfectly for a quote on the front of the box.
Amazing how you physically look WORSE after completing it compared to how you look in the beginning of the video. I've gone down that road myself, it's a complete shitstorm from start to finish and ending has no payoff, even with the supposed "good" ending. Now for god sakes, get some sleep! You deserve it. You've ventured into terrority very few gamers ever dare to tread :)
It's like completing Donkey Kong 64, but instead of gamer cred you've got nothing left but a hollow shell of yourself and a new appreciation for a hole through your head
Just as a quick note here - I finished up the captions for this video, so they should be up soon after the people in charge review them. It was a pretty annoying process trying to time everything, but like any project, it's always worth it in the end. 😊💞

I think in hindsight this game just proves how much of a miracle Super Mario 64 is. They got so much right when flying completely blind, doing something that nobody else had done before. Even now, with 25 years of experience, 3D platformers are pretty rare events in gaming, because they are devilishly difficult to make - indeed, surprisingly few developers have ever topped that initial offering in 1996.
Other Bubsy games: What can pawssibly go wrong? This one: What can pawssibly go right? The graphics are atrocious, but the worst idea is having to turn around to move. When you make MOVING hard, nothing else can be said.
After seeing Mario64 and Crash the main Dev of Bubsy 3D himself wanted to redo the complete game but the publishers wouldn't let him so he left it as is and said "F** it"
To be fair if he redid it there wasn't much worse he could have done. If anything at least a few things mario and crash did would have rubbed off an helped it not be as terrible as it was.
Well... at least the dev(s) have gone to better pastures like giving us the awesome Syhpon Filter games... which I have not seen any YT reviewer with PS1 overtones (Johnny vs., Caddicarus, NitroRad... really guys, stop blueballing us... you too patreon voters... jk, y'all are good.)
Fun fact : When the developers of Pac-Man World first showed their prototype to the President of Namco, it was so bad and felt so much like Bubsy 3D that almost the entire team was fired.
It's pretty wild how the Bubsy 3D people went on to make the Syphon Filter series and Days Gone. Sometimes there's a lot of talent who were too ambitious for what they were trying to create and that's probably the case for Bubsy 3D.
I broke one of the clips off of it entirely, but I had a FMA scroll in my closet that hasn't been hung up for years, so I took a clip off of that and replaced it.
Fun fact: Lani Minella, the voice for Bubsy here, hated this game too. Bubsy is one of the few roles she regrets taking, and she even admits the direction she was given was to be shrill and annoying.
Oh my freaking wow. That Edward comparison was scarily accurate! Also, the idea of using collectibles as ammunition? Rayman Raving Rabbids DS gave it a try too. The result? Rayman punches as his default attack and uses Yellow Lums to do his Rayman 2 energy shots. Honestly, best execution of the idea that I've seen in a long standing series.
2:15 hehehehe get it? Because *Accolade* is the name of the company that made Bubsy...And their name is on the cover too..? Was that on purpose, James?
Your's is the first Bubsy 3D review/retrospective that is played all the way through to the end! Mad respect for the endurance. So many people give up after the first few levels. :D
Dude... I don't know if you're a trooper or a madman for beating this, but I salute you! Also, 20:29 I hope your poster was OK after that, I don't think that was intentional, and yet it made that shot so much funnier! I'm not sure when you got over your case of AVGNitis, but this seems like a pretty genuine review of the game, not just "Hey let's pick on a game for clicks!" As far as the terrible graphics go, Matt McMuscles found the answer (it was a few years after your video came out, but I'm gonna share it with the rest of the world). The developers wanted to utilize a high-resolution mode, because no-one had tried it yet on the PlayStation. But there was a problem with that: because the PlayStation was so busy trying to render everything in this high-resolution mode, there was no extra memory for additional textures, so they had to strip most of them away just to get the game to run. That's why the game's graphics look less like a PlayStation game, and more like an unfinished N64 build. In fact, a lot of N64 games suffered from a similar issue, pushing for a more high-resolution aesthetic that the hardware just couldn't keep up with, so you get games like the N64 version of Tony Hawk with blurry textures or Turok constantly buried in fog
Well, your intro made me a bit more forgiving to the game at least. Something rare in Bubsy 3D reviews. This was a very well made review! Also, at 20:47 I hope your poster is okay - that was a well cosmetically timed fall!
When Caddicarus (second time I talked about him I know) he had several other people appear in his review telling him to don't do it. I would do the same thing and tell you it's not worth it and it's never worth it, playing that game is a death sentence.
Holy shit this review was awesome dude, your natural reactions and stress anger were top notch dude. You need to review more older games, your dialog, reviewing everything is perfect. I love the demonic part when you are ready kill the game and the screen goes red. Oh man dude you need to do more reviews way underrated on here.
I love how NitroRad comes off so natural and his personality is chill and that alone is enjoyable to listen to , and when he tries to make a joke it works really well .
And even when it doesn't isn't it a huge deal, which is comforting in a way as when one do it oneself it can feel like the end of the world, but he shows that it's okay.
The funniest thing about this to me is that only 2 years later, Spyro The Dragon came out, fuck, the whole OG Ps1 trilogy still stands up to the test of time, even by today's standards
The reason the game's frame rate and graphics suck? the director really wanted the draw distance big... in an era where all 3D games were basically required to have limited draw distance
Kudos to being the most informative and fair review of Bubsy 3D. Excellent job. I don't know whether you deserve a pat on the back for the effort or some Panadol from this migraine-inducing game.
According to Matt McMuscles video on Bubsy 3D, the interesting multiplayer did end up influencing Syphon Filter's multiplayer! Also, the idea of shooting collectables ended up being used to great effect in Pac-Man World (at least in the Re-Pac version) It's really cool how even the worst of games can have some interesting ideas that could influence other games Except maybe The Great Quest xP
Since a lot of people ask what the song from the beginning is, it's from Killer Instinct.

I really like how this review was done. It’s not the typical “haha game BAD” Bubsy 3D review, I actually learned a lot I didn’t know about the game, and it managed to stay funny throughout.
Also the progressive eyebags throughout was really good.
That's the wonder of Nitro Rad. He does poke fun at the games he reviews, but he also keeps his videos very informative. That's why they're so enjoyable. :D
@@etps4444 Indeed, it is refreshing then just the barrage of mindless hate and insults most other reviewer used for well known bad games
Still makes me wonder how Spyro died, yet Bubsy came back.
DrawnSimplistic Spyro has an remaster coming
DrawnSimplistic same as Blinx, Klonoa, glitch,(metal arms protagonist) and other never have a another game but Bubsy had a new game...for some reasons....
I think we should make theme a meme
@@starmaverick011 These games were less famous, and Bubsy was 1000/10 everywhere except for 3D.

And there’s me, I’m just waiting for a new Pac-Man World
Love that opening song, got that CD with my Super Nintendo!!!
The studio that made this game went on to make Uncharted Golden Abyss and are making Days Gone for the PS4. Talk about progress huh
and Syphon Filter after Bubsy 3D
Bullshit. No one can come back from this catastrophe. This is one of those things that drives a man to drink, to find Jesus at the bottom of a bottle. No way, man. You're fucking with me.
Adam does youtube nope it's true
ya man, it's true look it up its kinda crazy how far they have come
Mitsuru Kirijo You know what? Good for them, glad they went on to make freat stuff.
Wow.
Source?
@@al-diriano Look it up.
they are actually talented golden abyss and days gone were great games, how could they fail bubsy?
@@Skikopl Speaking of Days Gone, that game is AMAZING so far.
It's amazing to think the developer who made this train wreck, would later create the Syphon Filter Series, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Resistance: Retribution, and Days Gone, that's a hell of a redemption arc.
This is probably the most in depth review of bubzy 3d that's not "THiS GaMe iS PoO." Like always love your work
The RetroReplay guy does a pretty decent in-depth review of the game as well, considering this is the game that most haunts his past.
Oh boy, if in-depth analysis of Bubsy 3D is what you want, I suggest you look up Ulillillia. He is a *big* fan of Bubsy and made some videos exploring this game.
But the game is poo
He still said it was poop.
@@Keyfur91 Yeah that one was really in-depth as well. He knew just how terrible this game was to begin with.

Welp, at least I'm one of the people that didn't get to purchase Bubsy 3D, because nobody would want to rent it either!!!

Lies! Secrets and lies! :P
(lol yeah i know :)
+Ginnie Winnie: Yes, it's for dramatic effect but that's still what it's trying to convey.
Tbh, if Nitro said that wasn't make up, I'd still believe him after all of that.
The game is actually a masterpiece and technical marvel.
If you thought that was bad, then stay *far* away from Rascal.
Nana-Kyoto that's the game with the bubble gun right? Lol
Oh god, I would rather be fucked in the asshole with a sandpaper dildo laced with spikes and nails being held by a serial killer/rapist, than to ever touch that piece of shit. There are homeless people living in mud and dirt and rotting waste, that are less filthier than that tremendous pile of poop nuggets!
Nana-Kyoto Saying that makes me want him to play it
I enjoyed Rascal. Probably because it was the first 3D platformer i played and i had nothing to compare it to
If you thought THAT was bad, go live on another planet to escape Cheesy.
4:16-4:22 sums up the entire Bubsy series in a nutshell.

A true hero.
Nintendo themselves have topped mario 64 several times overs if you ask me
Well to be fair, Alpha Waves from 1991 was better than Bubsy 3D in many ways.
YOU BEAT BUBSY 3D?!?? You are a video game god

it's ok james. it's over now
Ok time to put him thru hell again :D
Lets go Rascal, Superman 64, and Drake of the 99 dragons!
Rob Paulson is an amazing voice actor, and I like his busy voice, but I’m glad the show never got picked up
After seeing Mario64 and Crash the main Dev of Bubsy 3D himself wanted to redo the complete game but the publishers wouldn't let him so he left it as is and said "F** it"
KHC Plays they probably should've let him re do the game

This is the first time, and probably the only time, I watched someone complete this game. I give my applause and a card to a therapist.
It's pretty wild how the Bubsy 3D people went on to make the Syphon Filter series and Days Gone. Sometimes there's a lot of talent who were too ambitious for what they were trying to create and that's probably the case for Bubsy 3D.
I love that Rayman hoodie!

At least the studio that made this monstrosity did bring us Syphon Filter
Oh my freaking wow. That Edward comparison was scarily accurate!
Also, the idea of using collectibles as ammunition? Rayman Raving Rabbids DS gave it a try too. The result? Rayman punches as his default attack and uses Yellow Lums to do his Rayman 2 energy shots. Honestly, best execution of the idea that I've seen in a long standing series.
2:15 hehehehe get it? Because *Accolade* is the name of the company that made Bubsy...And their name is on the cover too..? Was that on purpose, James?

Dude... I don't know if you're a trooper or a madman for beating this, but I salute you! Also, 20:29 I hope your poster was OK after that, I don't think that was intentional, and yet it made that shot so much funnier! I'm not sure when you got over your case of AVGNitis, but this seems like a pretty genuine review of the game, not just "Hey let's pick on a game for clicks!"
As far as the terrible graphics go, Matt McMuscles found the answer (it was a few years after your video came out, but I'm gonna share it with the rest of the world).
That being said, it still was terrible in other ways that you showed, so it's still not getting off that easily
Hey, I noticed you cut out the part where you discussed that Vic Mignogna played Bubsy in the woolies strike back. What’s up with that?
He harassed fans.
When Caddicarus (second time I talked about him I know) he had several other people appear in his review telling him to don't do it. I would do the same thing and tell you it's not worth it and it's never worth it, playing that game is a death sentence.
BUBSY 3D IS WORSE THAN MURDER
Umm... It's a bit late for that. Every thing that _could_ go wrong apparently _did._
Chrobo Triggered reference? “But the future still refused to change.”
And then Chrono Trigger music plays later.
Nitro deserves a hug for having to review this.
alternative title: Nitro Rads descent into madness...3D
The funniest thing about this to me is that only 2 years later, Spyro The Dragon came out, fuck, the whole OG Ps1 trilogy still stands up to the test of time, even by today's standards
The reason the game's frame rate and graphics suck? the director really wanted the draw distance big... in an era where all 3D games were basically required to have limited draw distance
I like how you actually managed to make this game look worse than the other reviews of it simply by going more in-depth on it.
9:36 “Yo, Ed is it true you brought a pretty blonde girl in your room to service you?!”
At 2:13 "the accolades on the front"
Ha. Accolade.
The way he puts the game in at 3:46 is way too satisfying.
Also, the idea of shooting collectables ended up being used to great effect in Pac-Man World (at least in the Re-Pac version)
It's really cool how even the worst of games can have some interesting ideas that could influence other games
