The "ugly sonic" thing really bugs me because even if it can avoid copyright due to parody, you know Disney would NEVER allow another company to do that to them. It's a company laughing at another for making a mistake it later fixed due to fan backlash even though Disney never fixes theirs.

Yeah that's the main thing that irks me about it too. It'd be one thing if it was done with permission, but Disney is notoriously abusive of copyright law, it feels like it lacks a lot of self-awareness coming from them (not the only thing in this movie to have that problem). It bothers me even more that since he has an actual role in this movie, several people are checking it out ONLY because they heard that. Ugly sonic's appearance is essentially free advertising for this thing, and as far as we can tell it's an unlicensed parody :/

I’m glad you referenced what actually happened to Robert “Bobby” Driscoll. He was bullied for doing the movie “Peter Pan” and then bobby got addicted to drugs because he wanted to belong somewhere, but drugs made things worse. Disney could have helped him and he did do more films; but sadly, he passed away alone.
Also I’m glad you included Anne Marie from all dogs go to heaven, cause when I read that story, I couldn’t even believe that it happened to the actress.

Honestly, I would've been completely on-board with this, if only it was it's own original IP instead of banking on a nostalgic property.
That's what made Roger Rabbit work: It's based on a book that uses completely original characters (obviously, the author couldn't get the rights to mainstream stuff) and thus you can actually look at the story as its own thing.
Same thing with Wreck-It Ralph, if they actually used real video game characters in major roles, people would've gotten pissed if Mario was portrayed as a bad guy or Sephiroth was a genuine hero who loves to play with kittens.
That's what makes this movie fall apart. If you don't hate the RR acting out of character, you will hate the other cartoons not being themselves. Sweet Pete really should've been a completely original villain, as much as I dislike Peter Pan myself, the idea of taking his real life voice actor's life story and using it as an excuse for his villainy is just... gross.

For me the downside of meta humour, is that it is mostly a list of nostalgic icons, some are fresher than others. It basically becomes a dad joke, told over and over again, hence the fatigue the audience will experience, while others may laugh at the presence of nostalgic references, I look and see them as cynical, so instead I will enjoy those references in their original context, for I do not need the film to relive my memories for me.

You say that the uncanny valley the 2D characters fell into was a budget issue, but here's the thing: Arc System Works has handily proven that you can make 3D models look like 2D characters and have it look _good._ That, for me, makes it more of a time/talent issue. Imagine a version of this movie where they were able to pick the brains of the ArcSys anmation team, or even manage to get some of their talents to work on this as a collaboration. The budget wouldn't have gone up nearly as much as actually using 2D animation would have made it, AND it would have looked so much better.

    • @coca-clown
      @coca-clown 2 роки тому +22

yeah, that and the amount of 2D animated characters in the backgrounds doesnt make it seem like a budgetary issue in the slightest, ESPECIALLY with ALL the IP's they attatched to this movie.
Having a movie where the 2D characters are 2D EXCEPT the 2D main character who is 3D cel-shaded feels like the most "what in fuck" decision you could possibly make.
i thought it was laziness but no, most of the animation is anything but, what the hell was the decision behind making the entire Rescue Rangers cast 3D?

The problem is, they're so greedy and soulless that they're pumping out as much product as they can to pander to people who don't care enough about animation to take off their nostalgia goggles long enough to see the garbage they're being fed. They might not have talent anymore, but that's only because they choose not to.

And honestly I think that’s just about the only thing I got out of this one. Idk, I think this film just leaned a bit too hard into the references, cameos, and meta humor, whereas I think if it focused on original characters like Roger Rabbit did it’d be better off for it. Also this film has literally no good reason to be a “Chip & Dale” movie. Also also for a film about celebrating different styles of animation to have animation of very inconsistent and unintentional low quality is, not a great look.

I liked this movie, tho I understand why some people don’t. It almost felt like Disney was flexing their power and showing off that they can buy multiple characters from other film companies. They also took a lot of shots at other film companies, but never had the humility to make fun of themselves. Disney certainly has its flaws, but they believe they’re the Messiah of animation.

Meta storytelling CAN work if it's not overdone and irritating.
When the script constantly references some obscure details about the franchise in an attempt at making the audience react in one form or another it's just badly done. The constant winking towards the camera just feels insulting.
Self referencial humour should be short, quick and poigniant and not a drawn out annoyance.
A movie wich is pretty meta without being garbage would probably be Galaxy Quest, wich is a meta commentary on the Star Trek franchise and fandom without being insulting to the audience's intelligence and actually quite wholesome.
I honestly think instead of this the RR movie should've just been a straight forward adventure. After all, the series was originally supposed to be a "Rescuers" show and while the original movie is pretty lame the 90s sequel was actually fairly solid so I have no doubt the general format and concept would've worked well as a blueprint for a Chip'n'Dale movie.
Also, instead of wasting their copious amounts of money on something like this Disney should get their shit together and hire Greg Weissman so they can bring back Gargoyles. That show was dope.

Never grew up with Rescue Rangers, so basically went into the movie knowing nothing. Really enjoyed it despite that, and it was a lot of fun noticing Easter eggs throughout.
Making Ugly Sonic a character and not just a cameo was also entertaining to watch, and was actually quite endearing with him making the best of a bad situation. Only things about the movie I didn’t like was the writing for the deputy, her performance was very wooden to put it mildly, and it doesn’t help she was supposed to play the role of a super fan, but failed to show actual enthusiasm that didn’t feel corny or forced. Some of the jokes like the cartoon rap were also quite forced and didn’t flow very whale. Despite that though it was a very entertaining movie that blended 2D, 3D and the real world remarkably well.

@@Bundalaba Presumably easier to start fresh with a new 3D model than to alter the old 3D model, especially since he was textured and rigged when they had to start-over and the proportions were very different. Realistically speaking, Dale getting 3D surgery and any of them growing up doesn't make an ounce of sense without explaining how iterations of the same character work and how some Toons (like Baby Herman) stop aging so I get where you're coming from. Either 3D Dale should be a new character or Ugly Sonic should just be Sonic now. I can accept there being different "people" filling in the roles but it really needs to be consistent somehow. lol I never thought of this while watching the movie though.

    • @DoveJS
      @DoveJS 2 роки тому +2

Yeah I immediately suspected the clay police chief but then the red herring of the deputy got me because I'm sure she was doing her best and it just didn't quite work (or the director was intentionally working against her to sell the red herring moment IDK.)
I did consider that maybe Ellie just never considered what was her actual favorite before it became a plot point or maybe her favorite didn't really include Dale that much so she was trying to be kind by not outing Gadget as her favorite character lol. I'd legit have to look up episode names, which I did a few months before watching the movie because I was responding to someone else. I couldn't pick a fave mostly because I haven't rewatched it in years but I remembered loving when Gadget goes to Hawaii and meets her doppelganger, the spy parody to make Dale feel better where Gadget dresses sexy, and the Cola Cult is just so danged memorable (relatively speaking because I forgot it was the other rat who turned out to be the "true" villain of the episode) and it explores how we respond to failure. I can't remember anything else featuring Dale other than Foxglove because I liked the chipmunks but I watched the series for Gadget mostly. My bi/pan appreciation was in its infancy (hence why I also remember Foxglove lol. It helps she had a heel face turn in her first episode.)
I also only remember the pilot arc for how they all met and the two squirrel sisters but just barely. It doesn't help that female characters were underrepresented in animation a lot back then so I focused on any of them unless they were extremely boring to me. And any character who had remotely Non-Binary or other LGBTQ+ vibes was an immediate fave, so I loved the villains unless they were super straight or extremely ugly or also bored me lol. (Edit: unfortunately, that would be most of the Rescue Ranger baddies to be honest. They were never that fun and exciting either. I only really vaguely recall Fat Cat and the bald scientist dude. Darkwing had some of the best baddies.)
My favorite Easter Egg btw was Blacksad dressed up as Samurai Jack at the end (unless he was supposed to be dressed up as Usagi Yojimbo... Either way, it was an amusing knock-off combo and hot.) :D

The story is pretty basic but the comedy does make up for it in a pretty good way. The cameos and references are there but don’t overtake the screen (except ugly sonic but that’s hilarious)
I think the only minor grudge would be the fact that Dale was the one who screwed over everyone and everyone is too forgiving except Chip because… let’s be honest Chip really cared for Dale from the very beginning and Dales excuse for thinking he didn’t care doesn’t hold up when the movie has moments before the break up where Chip cares for Dale despite the dumb decision.
But eh that’s a minor gripe, go watch the movie you’ll have a good time!!

Rather than having the characters be kidnapped and turned into bootlegs, they could have had them willingly turn into CG remakes because they don’t want to be forgotten.
That way the story is about frozen nostalgia VS out of touch updates and the style and substance properly meshes.
At this point if you strip away the Rodger Rabbit aspect you’re left with a forgettable buddy cop celebrity kidnapping story that’s been done to death.

But in this movie it feels like bad rotoscoping.

Being overly meta has become grating for me too. The only exception is Rick & Morty and Deadpool because the main character being meta actually has a character-driven story reason for it in the first place. There's intention behind it. It's not as you describe, pointing out tropes to excuse bad writing without actually doing or saying anything with it. Meta humor, much like the multiverse concept, only works when there's genuinely good writing and consideration behind it. Unfortunately, it's really easy for lesser writers to use these things as a crutch.

This ended on a surprisingly negative note. For a film that copied a lot of bad films and made everything work damn well, it deserves massive praise. For everyone who's criticised Ready Player 1, Space Jam 2, Wreck it Ralph 2, and so much more, this film proves those criticisms right. It proves that it could have been done better. Because it DID better. You upset that it used bad tropes really ignores what it was able to do with those bad tropes. This movie was genuinely good. And the fact that it had no right to be so good damn well does earn it bonus points.
The weird feeling of it being a Disney movie, whilst the villain of the movie is Disney, is not lost on me. And that's why it feels so much like the crea mking this went rogue. That and all the cemos leave me with a sense that this surely could not have actually gotten the "ok" from so many people. This movie is a fan movie in every sense of the word. It shouldn't be legal. It shouldn't exist. But it does. And that's incredible. And it was good.
I don't see it as any of these companies saying they've learned from their mistakes, I'm not that naive. But I think this movie existing makes everything just feel a bit better.

I'm just really tired of post-ironic reboots and creations. Maybe a few animators put love into this film, but the overwhelming feeling is that it's people doing more than just poking fun at something they liked as kids. It feels like they're actually putting down older, "happier" shows in a mean spirited way.

I hate to admit it, but the movie was SO good. I finished watching it today. Chip n dale has good chemistry together (It was fun and funny) plus the Antman joke although I don't like how they use Peter pan as a villain (referring to Old VC of Peter) as a way of mocking them like Sonic from a DIFFERENT company. Dang Disney.

I enjoyed the movie overall way more than I expected to but the biggest problem for me was the faux-2D animation. I get that it would've probably quadrupled the budget to hire a bunch of proper, old-school Disney animators (if they even still exist) but it would've looked way better if they had.

Note: I obviously meant if it was Bonkers instead of Rescue Rangers. Just imagine if it was Bonkers as an actor that played Bonkers. That would have been BONKERS in being meta.

You hit the nail on the head when you said that it was always so close to being good. They just didn't know when to let a good joke die. Ugly Sonic was the biggest example of this. Hilarious when he first showed up, but overstayed his welcome by the end. By absolute biggest complaint was at the end, when *spoiler warning*
    ...
    ...
    ...
they went and gave Ugly Sonic the role that they had already set up Gadget and Zipper for, distracting the villain by showing up in an aircraft. Seriously, Gadget and Zipper were LITERALLY flying around overhead in an aircraft, and had NOTHING else to do in this story! What were they doing up there the whole time, making more creepy fly mouse babies? Just give them SOMETHING! Making it turn out that Ugly Sonic was actually an FBI agent wasn't even funny!
Even when they do it well, like you said with the rapping scene, it was a good callback but just went on too long.
Pretty much the only time one of their "lampshade a thing and then just do the thing" jokes landed for me was at the very end, when Dale was like, "oh, and we can have a big pop star do a remix of the theme song, which everyone will love even though they really just want to hear the original," and proceed to go to the credits and do exactly that, but that joke worked because the movie was OVER, and they didn't have time to dwell on it any further.
