"They made them cousins to get people to stop shipping them, it didn't work." Oh God, did it back fire, till this day, I have no clue on why the hell that ship ever came about, never mind rose to such prominence other then it being the brainchild of trolls and madmen.
Beside the usual shipper excuse of "I like to be person A and I like to **** person B."; It comes down to that fact that Gwen was original met to be Ben's love interest. Her personality was in designed to have that chemical with Ben. Just changing their status as "cousins" is about as affects as changing the label on a soup can.
I like how normal it is, yet how fast it went, because if they did a "will they/won't they", I wouldn't have cared. It's clear he likes her (it's not hard too), and she ends up liking him too (cause Kevin is the best). By Ultimate Alien, they're a confirmed couple, which you don't see that often. When he turns into Not Metamorpho, the experience makes their relationship stronger at the end. When he becomes Monster Mutation Number 2, she tries her best to save him, but it's established that the more power he absorbs, the worst he'll get, and they still manage to work it out. By the time Omniverse rolls in, they're pretty much stable as you can get in any sci-fi world, plus in the future, they're still together. It was weird, that in Omniverse flashbacks they retconned that Gwen and Kevin we're kinda in to each other, but then again, that's Omniverse in general lol
I get what they were going for with the flashbacks....but I've given up on actually caring what Kevin's species is. He's the funny dickhead and I'm really fine with that. Shame they never seemed interested in doing some kind of arc about power literally making you crazy....or used that to push Kevin and Charmcaster. Cause they both seemingly had that. Then again I also found it weird how Gwen seemingly had a type and it was Badboys
Out of all the ships in the Ben 10 franchise, the ship between Gwen and Kevin was the one that honestly got the most development at least i think so i don't really remember that much, but i do know that they had their share of romantic moments.

In regards to the whole: “Don’t talk to her that way” moment, I think it’s more pointing out Kevin’s views on women. We learn that he has a strong relationship with his mother, so that more likely has to do with him drawing a line at yelling and insulting women. (writing contradictions be damned)
Doesn't really make sense considering in the original Kevin had no trouble trying to kill Gwen by lighting her on fire and crushing her arm when he held her captive though.

I've said it before, but I truly believe that in "What Are Little Girls Made Of" Gwen was never thinking over whether she should take Verdona up on her offer or not. Imo she wanted to reject it from the star, but didn't have the courage to do so and was questioning her judgement. She sought Ben and her parents for help, but they took the neutral stance of "We'll support you regardless of your decision.", which fair enough, but it wasn't what Gwen wanted nor what she needed. And then when she asked Kevin about it, he called the idea dumb (and he spoke from the heart) and it was all the backup Gwen needed to go up to her grandma to say no.
Yeah. I love that moment too. Kevin is the type of guy that if he likes or doesn't like something, he won't hide it, (Or at least not hide it well a lot of the time). Support from family and friends is wonderful, but in that particular moment, what she needed was an honest outside,perspective and Kevin is someone she can rely on for that.
i like to think if theres a universe where ben is the anodite one, he would have taken the offer like: "verdona: hey ben, lets go to space and be closest thing many civilizations well have as the closest things to gods and train your powers ben: neat "
Kevin is one of the *ONLY* males in an animated show I watched, that is the perfect mixture of "Loves his girlfriend" and "Has a solid personality and life OUTSIDE of his relationship". Especially when you compare Kevin X Gwen to ships like the one from the Miraclous ladybug show, it feels like then Elixir Of Life in terms of quality. Also, I forgot how *ICE COLD* Ben acted towards Kevin during the Argrogor Power Arc thing. Ben had NEVER killed before, yet when his best friend goes crazy *again* in order to *SAVE THE UNIVERSE*, Ben is constantly thinking of how to murk the guy. How can he be so cruel and callous, to someone he has known almost every day for at least a year? Did all that time mean NOTHING to him?
Honestly, I think it can be chalked up to EVERYTHING THAT PERCEEDED KEVIN’S INSANITY. From how huge of a threat Levin was to Ben the first time he sapped the omnitrix, having seen how much stronger he had become this time, not to mention failing every step of trying to stop the arc’s current main baddy before hand, that could easily drive someone over the edge.
Unrelated side note: One of my favorite moments in the OG Ben 10 was when Gwen learned magic and wasn't just on the sidelines during fights. I absolutely hate how much alien force watered down her powers to be a just blasts and barriers also the alien grandma reveal completely took away the novelty of it to "just another alien power."
True. In the OG, she could at least do many types of magic (and one where she could basically fly) but in AF, they just made her do Pink Lantern powers which weren't as interesting. And yeah, the grandma reveal just ruined the magic to me since she's of alien origin and UAF tried to have everything relate to aliens which makes the world smaller and less imaginative if everything is alien.

I think Gwevin was just refreshing to see. Most kids shows that have romance drag it out or do will they won't they situation. The two loved each and have a stable relationship. It's not that big of a thing but it's a thing that most people want. It kinda reminds of Rigby and Eileen from regular show. They were having a great time while Mordecai was in constant cringe pain!

Early 2000's kids show romance is often *such* a dragged out, abusive or non-existent pain in the butt, so Gwevin happening without beating the bush while staying wholesome was all a lot of us had at the time. Literally today's kids are so lucky to have realistic (SVTFOE), gay (The Owl House, Steven Universe), etc romances. I'm kinda jealous/mad lol.

@@Warriorcats64 True in part, I was just thinking about it from the first half with how it seemed like it was conveying that male & female protags are allowed to have other relationships/not be together, couples can end amicably and your first crush doesn't have to be your last. But then the show started forcing them & tripping over all its created ships. And it went downhill from there, lol. You can argue Regular Show and Adventure Time did the last message too, but there's a trend of it never ending well for the protagonist, having them end up alone. And the virgin side characters who _did_ fall in love with only one person, end up living happily ever after. Like, you can have multiple partners in your life until you find the one.
If I recall correctly, the reason they were made cousins wasn't to stop people from shipping them, but because they couldn't come up with an excuse for her to join him on the trip with his grand father.
I liked their dynamic and interaction, that "treat a car like a woman" line will never fail to kill me but tbh I think it's just cuz I was starved for Ben 10 shipping content cuz compared to other good ships in other series it was pretty bland and awfully rushed
Maybe Gwevin just seems so good thanks to all the crap relationships in media we saw growing up. But that probably made it more important for our developing brains to have observed it.

One thing that I did like about Alien Force was their attempt to mature the characters and story. It flopped a few too many times, but I appreciate the effort.
Kevin and Gwen were never over-sexualized and it was great how Gwen wanted to save Kevin in UA after he became a monster again... While Ben wanted to kill him for real lol
I like the way they talk through a lot of their disagreements. It doesn't happen all the time, but a lot of times when Kevin thinks he has a point he'll stick to it and the two will genuinely talk until they come to an agreement or at least understand the other person's viewpoint, that's really rare. Usually it's more like Ben where an act of heroism is what ends the argument, but Kevin and gwen often still talk after the saving part. It makes their connection feel more genuine and like they're both willing to put in the work for it.
I really do like Kevin and Gwen as a couple. They have nice cute moments, some really funny banter and balance out each other out. I always liked that they became a couple pretty quickly but with some build-up (the dance episode being the best example). And yeah, the Ultimate Kevin arc definitely could have been way better, but I think the main issue of that storyline is with is Ben, rather then the couple's dynamic. Their Omniverse dynamic is really nice too, with them even getting a pet and just feeling really domestic, while they occasionally hang out with Ben and Rook.
What I personally love about gwevin is the feeling of realism and danger that they bring to each fight scene and situation they convince us that there is actual consiquenses to each attack the take just by being so worried about each other and when they're not fighting they are just so consistent with how they talk and act toward each other that makes them feel like real life couples Btw would've loved to see you talk about the ua episode in the big space cube when Gwen was separated from Ben and Kevin

As much as people didn't like her for having stick in her ass, in season one she is first shown to be generally nice good-twoshoes, with a bit of supressed crazy in her and then she was rightfully angry at Harold for being little shit. And then the character overhaul kicks in. They pronably realised Heather can't be the conniving bitch this time and every season of TD needs a conniving bitch so Courtney's character was made into what the show needed her to be. I' m just pointing out that, since those obvioulsly aren't real people there need to be no 'red flags' from the beggining. She was one person in first season, another in season 2 because that's what writers needed and she was the best character fit they had for that role. It happened to a lot of characters, Courtney was just the most noticable.
Like or dislike the ship itself, i gotta just give the writers props for saying "hey, i want to make a couple that actually like one another and treat each other well and dont have other love interests to flirt with to start drama just to give them something to do"...and then, actually do it. Like, not only is that rare in media in general, but in a cartoon aimed towards pre-teens? Its downright impressive. If you can write a couple and make their struggles, developements, and tension come from the apocalyptic events going on around them or their baggage, NOT because they are unfaithful or dont get along despite saying they love/like each other, congratulations you just won at least 80% of your audience's respect.

Surprised you don't mention that Gwen also gets an odd retcon: her magic being fully changed to be alien-related after all, which makes her learning magic in the OG Ben 10...REALLY strange since she's able to do magic without any alien mumbo jumbo. It didn't bother me, but yeah, it was REALLY odd.

Again, stepping in. Kevin is a siphon, and while he can absorb substances just fine, absorbing energy makes him go mental. The more he absorbed, the worse he got, and the omnitrix had a lot of juice. This was explained by him being Half Osmosian before Omniverse retconning that.
That thing itself was already a retcon to explain why Kevin was almost a completely different person from his OS self and to try to justify his sloppy heel/face turn. I always hated how brushed over Kevin's flip to a hero was and how many people just accepted it at face value.
Jeez when Ben and Keven where about to fight in the final, Gwen said:"Ben, you promised we would try my way (trying to save him) first." And Ben just said "ya, I lied" gives me chills.
I enjoyed the original Ben 10 as a kid. But what i really enjoy about Alienforce and everything that came after it is that they evolved (and i dont mean this in a bad way) the series from being just a "kids show". All of the series that came after the original Ben 10 in the short time they have ben around, managed to catch up to American Comic Books (for better or worse) in terms of BatShit insanity. From ships/ love interests, villains, story lines, power scaling (GL vs Ben being a great example), and even Multiversal level plots, etc. As someone who is a Comic book fan its something i always admired about the sequel shows, even for their flaws here and there.
Plot twist: This was basically Kevin's ultimate plan of revenge to get back at Ben. Can't kill him and take the Omnitrix? Take his cousin instead! Huge W.
When I was a kid, the very beginning of their relationship felt a bit wrong to me, mostly cause I wasn't fully on board with Kevin as a good guy yet, but as the episodes went on Kevin not only became my favorite character in the show but his relationship with Gwen became an aspect of the franchise as a whole that I absolutely loved. Their chemistry is just on point and almost every scene they shared together, whether it was comedic, serious or wholesome was just great to see. His voice was never an issue to me cause am from the latin spanish gang and the man sounds like a chad in our dub lol ( although, no offense to Greg Cipes either, he's super talented and his delivery and performance as Kevin is straight up gold, he really does nail every scene with him if you ask me ). Also honorable mention to Kevin's friendhsip with Rook, watching those two fanboy over alien technology together in Omniverse was so wholesome and fun.
Kevin in Alien Force was basically Himbo Beast Boy. An improvement compared to the unreedemable little psycho in OG Ben 10. Glow ups are weird. Same can be said for Cooper in Alien Force / Ultimate Alien. Over the course of half a year became jacked because of a crush. I wonder what swole Cooper could've looked like in Omniverse.
Why did he have to be redeemed at all ? Why couldn't he have just stayed a villain ? And honestly I hated what they did with Cooper. His design was unique in the original, in AF he just looks like everyone else.
I like kevin as a villain and a a good guy, but when they made him a good guy, they shouldn't have had Ben and Gwen trust him so quickly, especially since he tried to kill them multiple times in classic series.
I fucking love Charmcaster. I used to think it was because as a young girl I was desperate for any powerful female characters, but looking back, it was a crush. The way I was "supposed" to feel about Shego, is how I feel about Charmcaster At least, her OG Ben 10 version. I love the Omniverse art style, but do not like that version of Charmcaster.

My honest opinion on the couple…. Both Kevin and Gwen are two of my favorite main characters (aside from THE main character) in the Ben 10 franchise (in the stuff that wasn’t the reboot) and the fact that they got together was great to me. Now, to be honest, I only discovered Ben 10 when Alien Force was on and then found the classic but I still love it all including Gwevin
Ya, honestly I found that whole interaction really funny. From where I was (without the context of the rest of the episode) it looked like he was trying to say something wholesome. But the car to woman comparison is so negatively strong in our culture, he couldn't have pulled it off. It was funny when he realized he should've stop while he was ahead.
I remember the episode where Kevin was kissed by Charmcaster yet continued to treat Gwen like shit, as a child i was pretty bummed out, i kind of wanted them to break up (like, getting back together later but my younger self wanted SOME karma for Kevin)

The one big up to Gewin is that their relationship lasted throughout the show. None of this final ep they get together fanfic writer gotta fill in the gaps. No they were together for a good chunk of the show.
Yeah, it's a very normal ship - that's why it's nice to see. Even outside of Ben 10, seeing a stable relationship with a dynamic that could actually be attained in the real world is shockingly rare. Big, flashy drama and powerful bonds are fabulous fun to see and watch, but they're much easier to find content for. So, while Kevin and Gwen's relationship is pretty mundane in regards to real-world relationships, that very aspect makes it unusual and refreshing in a fictional media format.
Kevin is one of the only redemption and turning good stories I actually like. Once you try to blow up the world thats it your done. In the ground now please. But Kevin actually comes back from that in a believable way and gwen is a big part of that. I love this ship for that but the best ark was ruined by ben going for the kill button the one bloody time he doesn't need to with a big bad.
@@josheverett7887 sort of. Really what the show did was use the time skip to file down all of Kevin's negative qualities( like him wanting kill a train full of people for money). So it becomes easier for you to buy into, because the Kevin you're seeing actually redeemed is a much nicer person than when you last saw him.
Here's how I would have fixed Kevin's "Evil again" arc in Ultimate Alien. Have it be tied to Ben's character arc. (Or at least what his arc SHOULD have been). Ben is not acting like a hero in this situation. He's on his own power trip parallel to Kevin's. The praise for saving the universe has gone to his head and he thinks he knows better than everyone else. He's under a lot of stress and pressure for keeping the world safe. He's a young, immature teen who's feelings of betrayal from his best friend is making him rash, and Grandpa Max realizes 'Oh shit, we let this kid become a child soldier, and he is NOT well.' Make it clear that BOTH Kevin and Ben the bad guys of this arc and that they BOTH need to be stopped before either of them go too far. Then when it's over Ben finally realizes what he's become and he and Kevin apologize to Gwen together.
I like this, and I also think the show had seeds of a proper reasoning as well, which could blend together pretty well. Ben consistently loses against Aggregor time after time after time, which leads to the 5 Andromeda aliens dying, and 'Greg nearly becoming omnipotent, often because he took advantage of Ben's heroism to track down his quarry or sidetrack him with collateral damage. You could suppose that Ben becomes disillusioned with his traditional heroic morality, especially seeing what happens when he goes all out, smashing through the temple on Mikd'lty, or beating Aggregor into the ground at Los Soledad. Maybe by the time Kevin rolls around, who's actively getting more dangerous the longer he's left unchecked, Ben's completely lost faith in his own morals and thinks that he NEEDS to kill Kevin for the greater good, despite what they had, just so nobody else gets hurt.
For me this relation was fine... but I hated what they did in Omniverve. In OG cartoon Kevin is a villain, Gwen has little to do with him. In Alien Force & Ultimate Alien he's a bad boy who's reforming. Gwen sees good in him, helps to get the best out of him. It's kiiiinda still that in Omniverse, BUT Omniverse also did flashabacks to 10 year old times. And retconned that Kevin was never such a bad guy and that Gwen always had a crush on him. One, that ruins reformation. If character was never evil, there is no arc. Two, that means Gwen saw a little psychopath, (who at one point tried frying her) and was into that. Three, it implies she spend 5 long years holding on that crush and that doesn't sound healthy.
What's so bad at a some what relationship forming between them? Gwen is 11 and Kevin is 12 in those flashbacks. Gwen met Kevin in Alien Force and was horny from the start.
Then again, it is interesting to note that a few other times she met Kevin again as a kid is during the time he was a part of the Rooters project and the time that Ben's rogue Ectonurite transformation wants to take over Bellwood with an army of Ectonurites. Also, Gwen's cousin Lucy Mann literally decides to mess with Gwen about her interest in Kevin, literally by saying that she likes him, and by shape-shifting into him just to get a reaction out of her, which ironically worked somehow. So there you have it. I hope that answers any doubts you might have about this rather popular ship.
I agree with ArteiceTB that Gwevin are goals but think she focused on some wrong small moments. Yes Kevin face softens when Gwen touched his shoulder. But it is not Kevin's jealousy of Morningstar. It's Gwen not liking cars but offering to go to the car show cause Kevin wants to go. It's Kevin offering his arm like a chivalrous gentleman when they go. It's Kevin not liking shopping but he goes cause Gwen wants to go. It's Kevin helping Gwen down steep rockey cliffs or out of cars. It's Gwen just hanging out with Kevin in his garage when he's working. It's Kevin saying that he likes the man that Gwen see in him. It's Kevin knowing Gwen can take care of herself and still wanting to take car of her. It's the causal intimacy between them that you feel the safety they must feel with each other. Kevin may not be edge street cred kid anymore but he's still so cool. (Canon or not, he built Ben a car.) Could Kevin have more personal goals and ambition in his life? Sure. I think Gwen's conversation about Kevin getting a GED is a good start to exploring that. I wouldn't be surprised if Kevin would one day own is own garage.
Honestly it baffles me to this day that the UAF writers saw Gwen and Kevin’s interactions in the Original Series and thought to themselves “wouldn’t these two make a lovely couple”, were they even watching the same show?
The magic part being thrown away is sad, they took away a thing that depended only on her: imagine having to level up again in the begining of the series because just as Ben she needs to get rid of the rust. Also Gwen could have been the techno magician going from a plumber attire to a more streamline silluete using magic and alien tech
for me, it would have to be their dynamic and how they care for one another. I ship a lot of characters in other media with the same trope and I am a sucker for it. Also, it's the little things that always get me giddy lol.

I loved Kevin as a character in Alien Force, specially his sarcasm. Problem was how quickly he was accepted in the team, given their past. And there was no credible reason for Gwen to start drooling at the once monster freak who had tried to kill her cousin several times, just because he got nice abs.

Gwen is looking at me with the face that says I screwed up... I don't know how but it's time to shut up"
This is my argument to convince you that Gwevin is a good ship. Just compare them with all the other ships Ben 10 had. Half of those are either boring, problematic, or is just Ben x a cardboard cutout of a female being.
He already did that and admitted to that. He's saying that it is the best ship, but also still a weak ship overall removed from a show that did crappy ships.

@5:23: Funny, I thought Kevin was Zuko for the longest time. He totally sounds like Dante Basco....it blew my mind that it was actually Greg Cipes. That said, a lot of what makes Gwevin work is the voice acting. Just Greg Cipes is Kevin, Ashley Johnson is Gwen... So it's not just Gwevin...it's also Beast Boy and Terra, it's also Chihiro and Jin-mey...basically two other really romantic relationships. So even if the lines don't always work, or the chemistry shouldn't be there, the performances are.
Well, in my case I've always been a shipper first and a person second. 90% of the time the content I watch has something I can ship (the only exception that comes to mind rn would be SVTFOE, until Eclipsa and Globgor appeared, that is), and Gwevin was no exception. Honestly, Gwevin is a lot like Dipcifica in the sense that it was that ship that would've been 100% a crack pairing, until the creators actually did something with it and we were all left like, wow, it works! And while, looking back, their sudden feelings might've been a bit rushed (not completely unrealistic seeing as these are teenagers and there's no bigger ass pull than the Kai×Ben ship in Omniverse or the way he broke up with Julie), it eventually became the most realistic ship in the show. As you said, Gwen didn't have much going on for her. The most we had were one or two episodes focused on her in 6 fucking seasons combined; everything focused on Ben because, hey, hero of the universe, everyone! I remember reading on Tumblr how Kevin is literally the only character who consistently and enthusiastically cared about Gwen and was always there for her. Pretty much like how Gwen is the only who genuinely believed in Kevin, even when he had no faith in himself. And in a franchise where the writers have long stopped giving a fuck about anyone other than the titular hero, you gotta take as many moments where they allowed the focus of the show to be elsewhere as you can get. Having said that, I still think it was a waste opportunity to have Kevin mutated for the third time instead of letting Gwen go Anodite and having the team trying to deal with her. Not only because of all the sweet Gwevin angst and deserved happy ending, but also because it would've allowed Ben to reflect on Gwen's role in his life and how much she's done for him since they were kids (and hopefully he wouldn't have been so quick to suggest murder if the victim-to-be were his cousin).

The point of this video is that there is no best ship, all of them are flawed for one reason or another. I think Gwen and Kevin by default are the best, but not because I think it's well written. Because I think it's poorly written to be blunt, but by comparison it is the best.
My only problem with Gwevin is that we never find out why Gwen likes Kevin aside from looks Kevin stated that he likes being with Gwen because he loves the look in her eyes that makes him a better person And Gwen we never find out why she likes him.. Maybe I missed it or it's hidden in subtext but I think it's more to do with that we never get her POV. Surprise surprise a female character in an action show is treated way worse than her male counter part *cough* Sakura *cough* I don't know but it makes they're romance seem shallow to me, I don't hate it but I also don't like it too.. Had we delved into why she stays with Kevin.. I might have appreciated it more

Most people don't realize this, but shipping has little to do with the canonical interaction between the characters or who/what they are to each other. it's more of a personal curiosity to see where a certain ship between individual A and individual B would go. How they would interact and change each other for the better(or worse). That's why some people just don't give a rats @ss about who they ship who(sometimes even what). Even the more 'problematic' or 'socially/legally/morally wrong' ships aren't free from this curiosity. And yes while the pornography of those(there's porn of everything, the only way to truly be free from it is to leave the internet. So either do that or learn to ignore the stuff that make your skin crawl), there are also wholesome things of those out there(usually, depends on how popular it is). If you go into a certain ship, only look at the weird/creepy stuff without even trying to learn about what else it has to offer, your perception of that ship would definitely be skewed. This goes for every ship out there, regardless of which show it is from.
Oh, that's true! Plus, even if you're initially not that interested in a ship, the more you think about it or come across quality fandom stuff for it, the more likely it is that you'll come up with something interesting for it yourself, be it art, fanfic, porn, or simple daydreaming etc. That's how even the tamest of fanon gets started and spread. Curiosity is the mother of invention and other people's imaginations are inspiring too. Maybe as you consider it, you'll realize it's not the ship for you but there's always the possibility of an unexpected spark because of some other element(s) that you're really into. IMHO, the fans who don't have a single problematic/weird ship whatsoever (not necessarily incest; just something people would be uncomfortable with) either don't ship anyone or they're insanely well-adjusted people. But going back to your first sentence, just look at all the ships that aren't problematic but are between characters who never interacted or had only minor interactions but could've had more happen within any time-frame off-screen. As long as you know each character well enough to do something with them, it's only logical that eventually someone would consider it and try to sort out how they think it would work out. Because you're right, shipping is just a "what if?" puzzle. :)

Not shipping anything 'problemaic/odd' isn't really a "well adjusted" kind of thing as much as a "minimal sense of adventure" kind of thing. I had some kind of problematic ships (nothing crazy, just age gap between adults which got shit ton of hate for whatever reason) and I find that I ship characters based on the quality of fanfiction/edits/fanart I can find of them. If there are two ships and one have a higher quality of writing in fanfiction, you bet Imma choose it despite it being problematic or creepy or weird or whatever.

There’s this moment in Ultimate Alien (“It’s Not Easy Being Gwen”, I believe) where Gwen and Kevin are having a really sweet, down-to-earth moment together, only for Ben (as Jetray) to smack into the window like, “Guys, I need your help!” And honestly? It makes me wish the team dynamic the entire show was like that: Gwen and Kevin developing a down-to-earth relationship while trying to keep up with Ben’s wacky adventures. Also let Ben be single because it’s apparent that romance is NOT working out for him. (Maybe in the next reboot they’ll let him be aromantic, that’d be pretty cool.)

I remembered Gwen and Kevin's relationship more than Ben's. like Ben is the main protagonists and his relationship was barely there and like you've said before barely anytime to develop. Also a lot Ben's aliens from Alien force, were like kind of copies of his aliens from the original series.
Honestly, I am in the same boat as you. I am happy they are together and they have best moments, though I never stuck around long for Ultimate Alien, seeing Kevin become a monster _again_ was becoming stale as bread. Though this ship is better than anything you can get with Ben, as it never had to suffer too much cooperate meddling and it stuck through till the end. If you don’t personally like it but find it better than whoever Ben is hooking up with, then that’s all you may need. I don’t judge people one their ship choices as long as they aren’t illegal or don’t make me feel uncomfortable. I say you do you, and you have made another marvelous video.

Personally, I like the first 2 seasons of alien force. I think at that point is where the show peaked for me. Kevin, Gwen and Ben were good characters. The DNAliens were cool villians and I feel the different tone actually acted as a plus for the arc.
I liked Gwevin as a kid because I loved shipping and nothing hit the same since Numbuh 3 and Numbuh 4 in Kids Next Door. I laways always constantly on the look out for my next pining obsession. I like cool badass redheads and I liked Kevin, so I thought the ship was cute. But in hindsight, I don't remember much about it. I only know that I thought it was cute and that it filled in that romance quota for me. Looking back as an adult, I feel meh about it, but I haven't watched it in a while. I still belive that Ben decision makes sense given the context, because diferent from Vilgax situation Ben feels like Kevin situation is his fault and he knows how Kevin can be dangerous imagine now that he is more powerfull than when he was a kid. I like how normal it is, yet how fast it went, because if they did a "will they/won't they", I wouldn't have cared.
It's clear he likes her (it's not hard too), and she ends up liking him too (cause Kevin is the best). By Ultimate Alien, they're a confirmed couple, which you don't see that often. When he turns into Not Metamorpho, the experience makes their relationship stronger at the end. When he becomes Monster Mutation Number 2, she tries her best to save him, but it's established that the more power he absorbs, the worst he'll get, and they still manage to work it out.
By the time Omniverse rolls in, they're pretty much stable as you can get in any sci-fi world, plus in the future, they're still together.
It was weird, that in Omniverse flashbacks they retconned that Gwen and Kevin we're kinda in to each other, but then again, that's Omniverse in general lol

I've said it before, but I truly believe that in "What Are Little Girls Made Of" Gwen was never thinking over whether she should take Verdona up on her offer or not. Imo she wanted to reject it from the star, but didn't have the courage to do so and was questioning her judgement. She sought Ben and her parents for help, but they took the neutral stance of "We'll support you regardless of your decision.", which fair enough, but it wasn't what Gwen wanted nor what she needed. And then when she asked Kevin about it, he called the idea dumb (and he spoke from the heart) and it was all the backup Gwen needed to go up to her grandma to say no.

Kevin is one of the *ONLY* males in an animated show I watched, that is the perfect mixture of "Loves his girlfriend" and "Has a solid personality and life OUTSIDE of his relationship". Especially when you compare Kevin X Gwen to ships like the one from the Miraclous ladybug show, it feels like then Elixir Of Life in terms of quality.

Honestly, I think it can be chalked up to EVERYTHING THAT PERCEEDED KEVIN’S INSANITY. From how huge of a threat Levin was to Ben the first time he sapped the omnitrix, having seen how much stronger he had become this time, not to mention failing every step of trying to stop the arc’s current main baddy before hand, that could easily drive someone over the edge.
Unrelated side note: One of my favorite moments in the OG Ben 10 was when Gwen learned magic and wasn't just on the sidelines during fights. I absolutely hate how much alien force watered down her powers to be a just blasts and barriers also the alien grandma reveal completely took away the novelty of it to "just another alien power."
True. In the OG, she could at least do many types of magic (and one where she could basically fly) but in AF, they just made her do Pink Lantern powers which weren't as interesting. And yeah, the grandma reveal just ruined the magic to me since she's of alien origin and UAF tried to have everything relate to aliens which makes the world smaller and less imaginative if everything is alien.
It's why I dislike AF and UA so much.

You can argue Regular Show and Adventure Time did the last message too, but there's a trend of it never ending well for the protagonist, having them end up alone. And the virgin side characters who _did_ fall in love with only one person, end up living happily ever after. Like, you can have multiple partners in your life until you find the one.
If I recall correctly, the reason they were made cousins wasn't to stop people from shipping them, but because they couldn't come up with an excuse for her to join him on the trip with his grand father.

It's just so nice to see a couple BE A couple for the MAJORITY of the show's runtime and then also be Good Couple!
I like the way they talk through a lot of their disagreements. It doesn't happen all the time, but a lot of times when Kevin thinks he has a point he'll stick to it and the two will genuinely talk until they come to an agreement or at least understand the other person's viewpoint, that's really rare. Usually it's more like Ben where an act of heroism is what ends the argument, but Kevin and gwen often still talk after the saving part. It makes their connection feel more genuine and like they're both willing to put in the work for it.
I really do like Kevin and Gwen as a couple. They have nice cute moments, some really funny banter and balance out each other out.
I always liked that they became a couple pretty quickly but with some build-up (the dance episode being the best example). And yeah, the Ultimate Kevin arc definitely could have been way better, but I think the main issue of that storyline is with is Ben, rather then the couple's dynamic.
Their Omniverse dynamic is really nice too, with them even getting a pet and just feeling really domestic, while they occasionally hang out with Ben and Rook.
What I personally love about gwevin is the feeling of realism and danger that they bring to each fight scene and situation they convince us that there is actual consiquenses to each attack the take just by being so worried about each other and when they're not fighting they are just so consistent with how they talk and act toward each other that makes them feel like real life couples

She was one person in first season, another in season 2 because that's what writers needed and she was the best character fit they had for that role. It happened to a lot of characters, Courtney was just the most noticable.
Like or dislike the ship itself, i gotta just give the writers props for saying "hey, i want to make a couple that actually like one another and treat each other well and dont have other love interests to flirt with to start drama just to give them something to do"...and then, actually do it. Like, not only is that rare in media in general, but in a cartoon aimed towards pre-teens? Its downright impressive. If you can write a couple and make their struggles, developements, and tension come from the apocalyptic events going on around them or their baggage, NOT because they are unfaithful or dont get along despite saying they love/like each other, congratulations you just won at least 80% of your audience's respect.
They actually did do the whole other love interest thing. As for not starting drama; I'd say look at the finale for ultimate alien season 1.

Surprised you don't mention that Gwen also gets an odd retcon: her magic being fully changed to be alien-related after all, which makes her learning magic in the OG Ben 10...REALLY strange since she's able to do magic without any alien mumbo jumbo. It didn't bother me, but yeah, it was REALLY odd.

Again, stepping in. Kevin is a siphon, and while he can absorb substances just fine, absorbing energy makes him go mental. The more he absorbed, the worse he got, and the omnitrix had a lot of juice.
This was explained by him being Half Osmosian before Omniverse retconning that.
That thing itself was already a retcon to explain why Kevin was almost a completely different person from his OS self and to try to justify his sloppy heel/face turn. I always hated how brushed over Kevin's flip to a hero was and how many people just accepted it at face value.

I enjoyed the original Ben 10 as a kid. But what i really enjoy about Alienforce and everything that came after it is that they evolved (and i dont mean this in a bad way) the series from being just a "kids show". All of the series that came after the original Ben 10 in the short time they have ben around, managed to catch up to American Comic Books (for better or worse) in terms of BatShit insanity. From ships/ love interests, villains, story lines, power scaling (GL vs Ben being a great example), and even Multiversal level plots, etc.
As someone who is a Comic book fan its something i always admired about the sequel shows, even for their flaws here and there.

When I was a kid, the very beginning of their relationship felt a bit wrong to me, mostly cause I wasn't fully on board with Kevin as a good guy yet, but as the episodes went on Kevin not only became my favorite character in the show but his relationship with Gwen became an aspect of the franchise as a whole that I absolutely loved. Their chemistry is just on point and almost every scene they shared together, whether it was comedic, serious or wholesome was just great to see. His voice was never an issue to me cause am from the latin spanish gang and the man sounds like a chad in our dub lol ( although, no offense to Greg Cipes either, he's super talented and his delivery and performance as Kevin is straight up gold, he really does nail every scene with him if you ask me ).
Also honorable mention to Kevin's friendhsip with Rook, watching those two fanboy over alien technology together in Omniverse was so wholesome and fun.
Kevin in Alien Force was basically Himbo Beast Boy. An improvement compared to the unreedemable little psycho in OG Ben 10. Glow ups are weird.

The way I was "supposed" to feel about Shego, is how I feel about Charmcaster At least, her OG Ben 10 version. I love the Omniverse art style, but do not like that version of Charmcaster.

Both Kevin and Gwen are two of my favorite main characters (aside from THE main character) in the Ben 10 franchise (in the stuff that wasn’t the reboot) and the fact that they got together was great to me. Yeah, it's a very normal ship - that's why it's nice to see. Even outside of Ben 10, seeing a stable relationship with a dynamic that could actually be attained in the real world is shockingly rare. Big, flashy drama and powerful bonds are fabulous fun to see and watch, but they're much easier to find content for. So, while Kevin and Gwen's relationship is pretty mundane in regards to real-world relationships, that very aspect makes it unusual and refreshing in a fictional media format.
Kevin is one of the only redemption and turning good stories I actually like. Once you try to blow up the world thats it your done. In the ground now please. But Kevin actually comes back from that in a believable way and gwen is a big part of that. I love this ship for that but the best ark was ruined by ben going for the kill button the one bloody time he doesn't need to with a big bad.

@@josheverett7887 sort of. Really what the show did was use the time skip to file down all of Kevin's negative qualities( like him wanting kill a train full of people for money). So it becomes easier for you to buy into, because the Kevin you're seeing actually redeemed is a much nicer person than when you last saw him.
Here's how I would have fixed Kevin's "Evil again" arc in Ultimate Alien. Have it be tied to Ben's character arc. (Or at least what his arc SHOULD have been).
Ben is not acting like a hero in this situation. He's on his own power trip parallel to Kevin's. The praise for saving the universe has gone to his head and he thinks he knows better than everyone else. He's under a lot of stress and pressure for keeping the world safe. He's a young, immature teen who's feelings of betrayal from his best friend is making him rash, and Grandpa Max realizes 'Oh shit, we let this kid become a child soldier, and he is NOT well.'
Make it clear that BOTH Kevin and Ben the bad guys of this arc and that they BOTH need to be stopped before either of them go too far. Then when it's over Ben finally realizes what he's become and he and Kevin apologize to Gwen together.

I like this, and I also think the show had seeds of a proper reasoning as well, which could blend together pretty well.
Ben consistently loses against Aggregor time after time after time, which leads to the 5 Andromeda aliens dying, and 'Greg nearly becoming omnipotent, often because he took advantage of Ben's heroism to track down his quarry or sidetrack him with collateral damage.
You could suppose that Ben becomes disillusioned with his traditional heroic morality, especially seeing what happens when he goes all out, smashing through the temple on Mikd'lty, or beating Aggregor into the ground at Los Soledad.
Maybe by the time Kevin rolls around, who's actively getting more dangerous the longer he's left unchecked, Ben's completely lost faith in his own morals and thinks that he NEEDS to kill Kevin for the greater good, despite what they had, just so nobody else gets hurt.
For me this relation was fine... but I hated what they did in Omniverve.
In OG cartoon Kevin is a villain, Gwen has little to do with him.
In Alien Force & Ultimate Alien he's a bad boy who's reforming. Gwen sees good in him, helps to get the best out of him. It's kiiiinda still that in Omniverse,
BUT Omniverse also did flashabacks to 10 year old times. And retconned that Kevin was never such a bad guy and that Gwen always had a crush on him.
One, that ruins reformation. If character was never evil, there is no arc.
Two, that means Gwen saw a little psychopath, (who at one point tried frying her) and was into that.
Three, it implies she spend 5 long years holding on that crush and that doesn't sound healthy.
What's so bad at a some what relationship forming between them? Gwen is 11 and Kevin is 12 in those flashbacks. Gwen met Kevin in Alien Force and was horny from the start.
Then again, it is interesting to note that a few other times she met Kevin again as a kid is during the time he was a part of the Rooters project and the time that Ben's rogue Ectonurite transformation wants to take over Bellwood with an army of Ectonurites.
Also, Gwen's cousin Lucy Mann literally decides to mess with Gwen about her interest in Kevin, literally by saying that she likes him, and by shape-shifting into him just to get a reaction out of her, which ironically worked somehow.
So there you have it. I hope that answers any doubts you might have about this rather popular ship.

I agree with ArteiceTB that Gwevin are goals but think she focused on some wrong small moments. Yes Kevin face softens when Gwen touched his shoulder. But it is not Kevin's jealousy of Morningstar.
It's Gwen not liking cars but offering to go to the car show cause Kevin wants to go. It's Kevin offering his arm like a chivalrous gentleman when they go.
It's Kevin not liking shopping but he goes cause Gwen wants to go.
It's Kevin helping Gwen down steep rockey cliffs or out of cars.
It's Gwen just hanging out with Kevin in his garage when he's working.
It's Kevin saying that he likes the man that Gwen see in him.
It's Kevin knowing Gwen can take care of herself and still wanting to take car of her.
It's the causal intimacy between them that you feel the safety they must feel with each other.

Could Kevin have more personal goals and ambition in his life? Sure. I think Gwen's conversation about Kevin getting a GED is a good start to exploring that. I wouldn't be surprised if Kevin would one day own is own garage.

I loved Kevin as a character in Alien Force, specially his sarcasm. Problem was how quickly he was accepted in the team, given their past. And there was no credible reason for Gwen to start drooling at the once monster freak who had tried to kill her cousin several times, just because he got nice abs.
honestly I haven't watched much of Alien Force... but the line about "you have to treat a car like you treat a woman" is the most hilarious moment I've seen. not only because of that whole back and forth being Kevin's best line. but also because you can really see Kevin grow as a person where he realizes "wait... Gwen is looking at me with the face that says I screwed up... I don't know how but it's time to shut up"

@5:23: Funny, I thought Kevin was Zuko for the longest time. He totally sounds like Dante Basco....it blew my mind that it was actually Greg Cipes.
That said, a lot of what makes Gwevin work is the voice acting. Just Greg Cipes is Kevin, Ashley Johnson is Gwen... So it's not just Gwevin...it's also Beast Boy and Terra, it's also Chihiro and Jin-mey...basically two other really romantic relationships. So even if the lines don't always work, or the chemistry shouldn't be there, the performances are.
Well, in my case I've always been a shipper first and a person second. 90% of the time the content I watch has something I can ship (the only exception that comes to mind rn would be SVTFOE, until Eclipsa and Globgor appeared, that is), and Gwevin was no exception. Honestly, Gwevin is a lot like Dipcifica in the sense that it was that ship that would've been 100% a crack pairing, until the creators actually did something with it and we were all left like, wow, it works! And while, looking back, their sudden feelings might've been a bit rushed (not completely unrealistic seeing as these are teenagers and there's no bigger ass pull than the Kai×Ben ship in Omniverse or the way he broke up with Julie), it eventually became the most realistic ship in the show. As you said, Gwen didn't have much going on for her. The most we had were one or two episodes focused on her in 6 fucking seasons combined; everything focused on Ben because, hey, hero of the universe, everyone! I remember reading on Tumblr how Kevin is literally the only character who consistently and enthusiastically cared about Gwen and was always there for her. Pretty much like how Gwen is the only who genuinely believed in Kevin, even when he had no faith in himself. And in a franchise where the writers have long stopped giving a fuck about anyone other than the titular hero, you gotta take as many moments where they allowed the focus of the show to be elsewhere as you can get. Having said that, I still think it was a waste opportunity to have Kevin mutated for the third time instead of letting Gwen go Anodite and having the team trying to deal with her. Not only because of all the sweet Gwevin angst and deserved happy ending, but also because it would've allowed Ben to reflect on Gwen's role in his life and how much she's done for him since they were kids (and hopefully he wouldn't have been so quick to suggest murder if the victim-to-be were his cousin).

Most people don't realize this, but shipping has little to do with the canonical interaction between the characters or who/what they are to each other. it's more of a personal curiosity to see where a certain ship between individual A and individual B would go. How they would interact and change each other for the better(or worse). That's why some people just don't give a rats @ss about who they ship who(sometimes even what). Even the more 'problematic' or 'socially/legally/morally wrong' ships aren't free from this curiosity. And yes while the pornography of those(there's porn of everything, the only way to truly be free from it is to leave the internet. So either do that or learn to ignore the stuff that make your skin crawl), there are also wholesome things of those out there(usually, depends on how popular it is). If you go into a certain ship, only look at the weird/creepy stuff without even trying to learn about what else it has to offer, your perception of that ship would definitely be skewed.
This goes for every ship out there, regardless of which show it is from.
Oh, that's true! Plus, even if you're initially not that interested in a ship, the more you think about it or come across quality fandom stuff for it, the more likely it is that you'll come up with something interesting for it yourself, be it art, fanfic, porn, or simple daydreaming etc. That's how even the tamest of fanon gets started and spread. Curiosity is the mother of invention and other people's imaginations are inspiring too. Maybe as you consider it, you'll realize it's not the ship for you but there's always the possibility of an unexpected spark because of some other element(s) that you're really into. IMHO, the fans who don't have a single problematic/weird ship whatsoever (not necessarily incest; just something people would be uncomfortable with) either don't ship anyone or they're insanely well-adjusted people.
But going back to your first sentence, just look at all the ships that aren't problematic but are between characters who never interacted or had only minor interactions but could've had more happen within any time-frame off-screen. As long as you know each character well enough to do something with them, it's only logical that eventually someone would consider it and try to sort out how they think it would work out. Because you're right, shipping is just a "what if?" puzzle. :)

I had some kind of problematic ships (nothing crazy, just age gap between adults which got shit ton of hate for whatever reason) and I find that I ship characters based on the quality of fanfiction/edits/fanart I can find of them. If there are two ships and one have a higher quality of writing in fanfiction, you bet Imma choose it despite it being problematic or creepy or weird or whatever.

There’s this moment in Ultimate Alien (“It’s Not Easy Being Gwen”, I believe) where Gwen and Kevin are having a really sweet, down-to-earth moment together, only for Ben (as Jetray) to smack into the window like, “Guys, I need your help!” And honestly? It makes me wish the team dynamic the entire show was like that: Gwen and Kevin developing a down-to-earth relationship while trying to keep up with Ben’s wacky adventures. I remembered Gwen and Kevin's relationship more than Ben's. like Ben is the main protagonists and his relationship was barely there and like you've said before barely anytime to develop.
Also a lot Ben's aliens from Alien force, were like kind of copies of his aliens from the original series.
But in AF, his aliens are hybrid of his past

Honestly, I am in the same boat as you. I am happy they are together and they have best moments, though I never stuck around long for Ultimate Alien, seeing Kevin become a monster _again_ was becoming stale as bread. Though this ship is better than anything you can get with Ben, as it never had to suffer too much cooperate meddling and it stuck through till the end.
If you don’t personally like it but find it better than whoever Ben is hooking up with, then that’s all you may need. I don’t judge people one their ship choices as long as they aren’t illegal or don’t make me feel uncomfortable. I say you do you, and you have made another marvelous video.

Personally, I like the first 2 seasons of alien force. I think at that point is where the show peaked for me. Kevin, Gwen and Ben were good characters. The DNAliens were cool villians and I feel the different tone actually acted as a plus for the arc.
I found Gwen to be boring and found ben too be overly serious. Kevin was the only interesting character to me.
I liked Gwevin as a kid because I loved shipping and nothing hit the same since Numbuh 3 and Numbuh 4 in Kids Next Door. I laways always constantly on the look out for my next pining obsession. I like cool badass redheads and I liked Kevin, so I thought the ship was cute. But in hindsight, I don't remember much about it. I only know that I thought it was cute and that it filled in that romance quota for me. Looking back as an adult, I feel meh about it, but I haven't watched it in a while.
In the years since my mind has fixated on Bevin, but that's part chemistry and part obsession with reclaiming all of my nostalgia in my gay lense, lolol.

Yeah everything about after the original Ben10 is basically explained as "Great Concept, but Poor Execution" like Gwven is still the best part but I was always jaded how obviously they were setting up the pair without really exploring how they even got to a net 0 in their relationship after a summer of attempting murder.

I still belive that Ben decision makes sense given the context, because diferent from Vilgax situation Ben feels like Kevin situation is his fault and he knows how Kevin can be dangerous imagine now that he is more powerfull than when he was a kid.
Plus Ben never had a problem with killing his vilans, in Alien weeding he killed the alien parents,he burned Zyscar alive(he didn't know he would survive) , he throw Vilgax in space who only survived because plot armor.

It's a less satirey version of Lisa Simpson and Nelson Muntz which was my favorite thing as a kid in the Simpsons and still is. Gwevin gave me hope that not every smart girl winds up miserable just because she wanted to settle.
