What are the Cheapest Surplus Gas Masks?

- I was asked if I could do a video regarding the cheapest surplus gas masks/respirators on the market, so that is exactly what this video is about.
These masks are not necessarily good but they are cheap, as a general rule Warsaw PACT gas masks are cheaper than their NATO equivalents, so for the sake of diversifying the video, I have not made a video solely about PACT and Soviet respirators.
Masks included in this video are:
Soviet GP-5 Civilian gas mask
Polish MC-1 gas mask
French/Belgian M51 gas mask
West German M62/M65 gas mask
British Light anti-gas respirator
Finnish Nokia M61 V2 (or any other American M9 copy)
Czechoslavakian M10m
Many of the masks in this list have spinoff models or there are other similar masks available, prices will vary a bit depending on where you are in the world and the supply of the masks, remember surplus masks are old stock, as they get sold the price will increase, when other surplus masks go onto the market or more stock of some of these masks turn up then the price will go down.
Please remember that many old surplus gas masks have unsafe filters, that contain asbestos or other nasties, good advice would be not to use an old filter and if you have a new filter, make sure it is not leaking prior to use.

5:30 Its clear the designers didn't get their priorities straight when the bag is better quality than the mask it's meant for.
It could just be that a different factory was issued the job of making the bags.
I mean they did prove some of the issues that the m51 had with the m53. Other than the strap system not changing. It has a much better exhale valve, that from what I've seen it doesn't look all that cheap and thin.
But is the Nokia M61 indestructible just like the phones?

La máscara alemana NVD (o Cheka o Polaca) M10, me parece la mejor. También me ha sorprendido la máscara soviética, creía que era peor pero viéndotela puesta me parece mucho mejor de lo que pensaba. Pero mi preferida es la alemana de la Alemania Oriental.

Good video as always the best cheapest surplus mask are probably the CM4 draeger M65/Z65 and the GP5 there all well made and are very common and are all 40mm masks which is most common mask filter thread, I k there different like GP5 being GOST and ABEK etc.
It's GOST and STANAG, ABEK is the industrial equivalent of NBC/CBRN.

Just now bagged myself a Danish Surplus MK2. $35 for the bag, mask, and an old filter to be used for display only. The LAG masks seem to be $50+ here in the States, and the C3s I find are pretty ludicrous at $90-$100, and I got one of those a week or so ago for about $57. There was a Dutch C3 listing that just expired that ended in price around $44. Wish I would have actually grabbed one when I could have because they're an interesting variation because of the plastic exhale/voice diaphragm cover.
Yeah where you are in the world will vary the prices of certain surplus items, the export model of the C3 looks cool but I've never seen any for sale.

I found that Czech CM4s are among the best. You can get them for 20€ or less and are compatible with current NATO filters while still being pretty good.
Pretty sure they are GOST not NATO but otherwise yes good masks.

Pretty sure that the czech cm3 filter is, for the most part , safe. I've done lots of research, and can't seem to find any info on it containing asbestos. Don't know about the Polish MC-1 version though

I certainly wouldn't trust it, as we know for certain that every Soviet filter of the same period contained about 7.5% asbestos, and Czech filters were made to the Warsaw PACT standard, so, for example, the Polish EO-14 filter despite being made in Poland also contains asbestos, until someone gets a job lot of Czech filters tested we won't know for certain but the odds are they contain asbestos.

Weaponsandstuff93 the filter is a charcoal filter and should be safe. Again I've done more research now, but I probably won't use the filter too just in case

It super highly depends where you are from, the M45 and M51 are up to 50€ here
if you live in germany you can basically get any mask between 1€ (mostly GP5) to 50€ (special prototypes and masks with a confirmed history) usualy they cost 12€. filters depends where you buy them and what you buy. they go from 2€(asbestos alert!) to 20€(nato filters usualy mostly safe to use)
Also make sure you use GOST/Normalised filters only with Soviet masks as not to damage the threads and have an air tight seal.
what non gas mask items would you reccomend I get for my collection?
I've allready got a current hazmat suit (I know a guy in OSHA), an Individual Protective Cover, though I do want a second one, a few decontamination packets, and a chemical agent detector, but I'm trying to get some other stuff.
I almost bought an old gas container from ww2, it was pretty cool. contained mustard gas if I remember correctly, and you'd attach a tripwire to an explosive that you had on the back of it, and if anyone tripped it they'd get gassed

in belgium i got a m51 for about €9 in 2019 in perfzct condition with filter and bag
They actually do still make filters for the M10 they make them in West Germany and another country in Europe you can find a bunch of filters on eBay and I do not contain asbestos

Currently in America the m10m and gp5 mask are the most common .

ik its 2 years old mask and you might know it but nokia they created a mask the name is M61
M62 are great. the straps can rip of (had it happen 3 times) and can get stuck so that you cant change the size. they use M40 filters and i can only recomand to beginners. the come as far as i know only with nonasbestos filters.

Hey so if I have a fp5 filter and it expires but all I want the filter is for it can protect me against only dust should I be fine? Or do I still have to buy a new filter?
P3 filters don't really expire so it should be fine against dusts.

Hey Liam , my mask filters (including m10m filters) have a salty smell when breathing through them. is this normal ? would love to know so I can safely use them.

You sure it's the filter that smells and not the mask?
The best way to describe the smell would be " salty " . I have tested it on my pmk2 filter and my m10 m. on the pmk2 it was both that smelled weird(mask and filter ( I don't wear them anyway)) and on my m10 m its just the filters. The mask itself still has a slight smell of rubber and talcum powder.
The filters shouldn't smell so I assume something is wrong, however maybe you are just sensitive to a certain component?

6:51 YAY MY GAS MASK , i should say that i am proud on this gas mask , i use it in really heavy duty tipe of things like , exm : angle grinding dust , rust etc ; welding fumes , paint ,wood dust and so on :D I really like it , i have 2 of these :)
PS : It's M1 from yugoslavia , made in my city by the company named TRAYAL , they make best gas mask since 1982 , btw my gas mask is from 1982 soo it's really good and really really proud of this product :D

The thing about gas masks from your own country being cheaper... do you know how cheap CM-3, CM-4 or M10 is if you are czech (like me)? CM-3 is usally the most expensive out of these at around 7 or 8 pounds (most likely due to age and lower numbers - CM-3 are oldest out of these so it makes sense there is fewer of them than CM-4 or M10), M10 is usually about 6 or 7 pounds and CM-4... I found one for as little as 4 pounds.

Yes and no, closing it is a much better idea than leaving it open but if too much vapour gets in, while it's open the charcoal will become saturated, please watch my video on this so I don't have to repeat myself regarding it.

You forgot the Swedish m9 version . they Swedish version was like the Finish version but it was green and the name of it was Skyddsmask M/59 . I have used them many times in my military service here in Sweden . But now we use a newer type of mask

GP-5s aren't great for prepping though due to the cost of getting modern filters for them.

I don't actually know if they are issued with bags but it will fit in any gas mask bag as it's a small mask.

Since there has been talk about N. Korea and ICBM's and nukes, I would assume that gas mask, respirators, NCB suit, and how to survive a nuclear apocalypse videos would be very popular, so if I were you I would make more videos like that, to really cash in on that and make a name for yourself.

They probably no longer work well, seeing as you won't have any new filters from them made since the early 1990s if they are sealed they will expire fairly soon after opening.
And it's not been confirmed but as every other Soviet filters contained asbestos it would be a safe bet to assume they do.

I need help. My PMK-2 lenses keep fogging up, even after I bought anti-fog solution and put in on the lenses. Can you please help? Any advice is appreciated.
Does the PMK-2 have a nasal cup?
If you mean inner mask, no. At least not like the Shalon 4A1. It is the same design as a PMK-1 though on the inside.
That's why it's fogging up, other than putting the paste on the inside of the lenses you won't be able to do anything about it.
Well, there's one more thing I wonder about. In the kit that came with it, it came with a round metal box labeled НПН and inside has what's the seller called : film for sweating glasses. Any idea what that's for?
Normally it's the stuff you sandwich between the lenses and the inside of the mask that acts as an anti-fog, every major Soviet mask since the GP-5 has come with them but most people don't bother installing them.

I own a m51 that came with a brown filter in Arabic text for 5 dollars on an app called letgo. The guy who was selling it had no idea how gas mask worked so I got it for 4 dollars lol

Eric Jankowski You need to have the canteen with you and plug the plastic plug thing on the cap. To attach the tube you need to press really hard into it so be careful. It will release pressure. Also the tube moves with how far the tube is pushed forward. The filters in the silver packages are okay by the way. Made in the 90s and that when people knew about asbestosis.

£361 according to a currency converter so £16 or so per mask on average, still a lot cheaper surplus wise than collecting helmets, uniforms, firearms etc but yeah expense and value are relative I guess

Its been confirmed that the gp5 filter does contain asbestos, but not enough to harm you
Any amount of asbestos can harm you, obviously, the more you inhale the more damage it does.
There'll always be a risk of lung cancer if there's asbestos present. Of course you'll probably be safe, but personally I don't want to risk it.
Immediate danger and getting asbestos poisoning and dying 40 years early are still good.
the asbestos is located closer to the bottom of the filter and will have to go though everything else before before it reaches your system worst the can happen with an undamaged filter is short term respiratory problems
Source: I've had an unsealed GP-5 filter in my bedroom for about two years now
so unless the filter is leaking you're good
