Hannah, just leaving this comment here to state that I, as I believe most of the people who watch your channel and are excited about your book and by your love of poetry, would LOVE to hear you talk about how you feel about all of these poems. If you ever feel inclined to make a video about your favorite poems, the ones that are as a part of your body, as you so beautifully put it, please know that we would be delighted to see it. Congratulations again and may this be the first of many!
Hi Hannah! I wanted to say a quick note about how you mentioned feeling unsure of why you're doing this when you want to be writing poetry. I don't wear makeup and for a long time i didnt know you were a poet, but I kept watching for videos because of their poetry. Your descriptions and ways of thinking have always fascinated me and made me think. So, perhaps these videos aren't *explicitly* poetry, but the fact that you are, in your heart, a poet, means that so much of what you create ultimately crosses the line into poetry. Even in your video today: "It is with this information that I comfort myself When I wake up in the middle of the night thinking "what am I doing reviewing makeup on UA-cam, when I'm actually trying to write poetry with my life?" I take a deep breath and say to myself "Hannah, William Carlos Williams was a doctor. Wallace Stephens was an insurance agent. T S Elliot was a banker." And then I go back to sleep." Anyway, all of that is to say, I appreciate all of your creative work, even when it is perhaps less intentionally poetic, and I'm really excited to read your book!
I totally agree! It is Hannah’s self-reflection, and insight, her methodology and articulation and her guidance and encouragement that are poetic. She could speak about something I have no interest in but I will want to listen because of everything she brings to it.
I completely agree. The main reason I watch Hannah's videos is because of her perspective and the way she expresses herself. She is beautiful to watch, and thought-provoking. Hannah, if you read this: your videos are works of art. You are a work of art. And we love you for it.
i’ve been feeling bitter and alienated from poetry ever since falling into illness during my creative writing MFA program and being met with nothing but protestant-work-ethic-flavored shaming and academic elitism. Your genuine love of poetry is reminding me of what it used to mean to me, before it was tainted by elitists. it’s that savoriness of poetry; that richness, that backwards motion that leads to pensiveness and rereading, a backwards motion and, better, a stillness, that are both so lacking in our modern lives. those poems do become like little treasures we can carry with us when we have nothing else. thank you so much for awakening that in me 🥺💕💌
A doctor, banker, and UA-camr…. I’m so grateful for your UA-cam work, which is allowing us to learn and treasure poetry from a Poet. Thank you!!! (Pre-ordered and happy whenever it arrives :))
You're always sparkling when you talk about your love of beautiful things, but here, talking about your love of beautiful words, you are extra sparkly. As someone with a lifelong love affair with literature and poetry as well, this is a joy to watch. Pure, pure joy.
Received mine today through the letterbox in Scotland!!🏴 Love seeing lovely people achieving their dreams. Can't wait to take it to a local coffee shop tomorrow and enjoy. Also I love how you explained our approach to new poetry - even for someone who loves it; so many times it feels overwhelming.
Leaving poetry scattered around the house to read instead of picking up your phone. I LOVE this so much. Talk about romanticizing your own life 🤍. Your excitement is palpable! Can’t wait to read it ✨
This information is splendid and invaluable, Hannah, and not readily accessible elsewhere. You seem to be in your element and that is lovely to behold. I am reading a poem every morning this year. It's a magical way to begin each day. There is nothing like a book in one's hands, though that may not be feasible for all. I am gleefully anticipating reading Julia, Hungry!
@@d.-beck7205 Hi! I am reading an anthology of poems that has a poem for every day of the year though you could create this by reading poem a day from a different anthology not curated by the calendar year. It's fun and sets an inspiring tone for the day. Today's poem is about a parent's adoration of and aspirations for their young child.
I was smiling so wide when listening to you talk about the poems! I really hope you'll do more content about literature! Let's do a poetry bookclub or a monthly deep dive on one of your favorite poems, it would be so cool!
Hannah, I never comment on videos but I'm an undergrad currently writing my dissertation on approaching the poetry of Hafez through the lens of encyclopedism and the way you talk about poetry is so illuminating and succinct and eye-opening. i've been pouring over poetry for the past few weeks feeling like im wading through a dark cave and here you come with a torch and a rope! thank you for your content and I can't wait to receive my copy of julia hungry!!!
I can't wait to get mine! And what a wonderful experience for the poet herself to come alongside us as we read it! Thank you for being so generous in the way you share yourself to the world. I look forward to diving in :))
I preordered your book and look forward to reading it multiple times. Sadly, I never had an opportunity to become truly educated about poetry, but I grew to appreciate it more after reading a poem by James Wright. It so struck me that I purchased a book of his poems. Lines like, "Suddenly I realize That if I stepped out of my body I would break Into blossom," have stayed with me for many years and still have the power to make me cry.
The way you talk about poetry makes it feels so solid like working with clay. I truly cannot wait to get my hands on your book. Thank you for sharing these five window poems.
I’m so excited!💜 As a purveyor of literature and poetry, and a lover of analog, I would take the study of the poem, one step further from printing it onto paper by transposing it in one’s own hand. There’s something about seeing someone else’s words in one’s own handwriting that makes it incredibly personal. You have already put those words into your being for a moment, and by rereading them from your own handwriting, you are reminded of how integral they can be to your life.
I try to journal every day, but sometimes I don't feel like being introspective and find myself transposing poems instead. I wasn't really into poetry until I started doing this, and now I really look forward to finding a poem that intrigues me and I get to write down.
This is wonderful advice about how to engage with a poem. I’ve always been a little hard on myself when I first read a poem and have no comprehension of its meaning. Now that I know that that’s okay and a part of the process, I’m much more likely to read a poem more than once. Thanks for the education and reassurance ! 💚💝🕯️
I would like to ask, to strongly but politely request, that you do some poetry related content in a semi-regular way? My mom was very into poetry and I never quite "got it" until I was older. Interestingly, I think my love came through my appreciation and relationship with hip-hop. SO I quite appreciated you referencing ATCQ. At my post-teen age my apatite for poetry has grown immense and I have even started composing some of my own. I wish to learn as much as I can.
As someone who is not into poetry at all (like, almost repulsed by poetry - mostly due to not understanding it), I could listen to you talking about it for hours. Thank you for this video.
Oh gosh Hannah, didn’t think I could appreciate you more but then you busted out a Lou Reed and Tribe Called Quest reference and I just 🥰😳🫠 I’m so excited to receive my copy. I’m also going to start to look at poetry differently and try to let it wash through me like a song. Thank you for the kind and thoughtful way you explained it!
Hannah, this was such a brilliant and helpful video and has enhanced my (already bountiful!) excitement for Julia Hungry. Thank you for giving us this primer and congratulations on your well-deserved pre-order success! ❤
Oh Hannah, this video is in itself POETRY!! Long time subscriber here and I think this is one of my favourite videos you have ever made. Your passion and joy for poetry just shines through and I will absolutely be following your suggestions of how to read poems, to mingle with them, to let them become the soil in which I grow! I really felt this video made me think and I will return to it again. It’s such a joy to witness you bringing poetry and UA-cam together and I hope you keep making videos like this. Can’t wait to read Julia Hungry!
I’m SO excited!!! My late English grandfather was a lover of poetry and he shared several of his favorites with me. I too, feel them in my bones. After he was killed when I was 12, I lost much of the love I’d found in reading and in poetry. Your book and your discussion of poetry has reawakened those dormant bones and I’m so excited to stretch and feel the life of your work in these weary limbs!
such a lovely and inviting introduction to poetry! I teach a section of undergrad poetry writing right now (as an mfa) and there's so much here I agree with and want to borrow for my own teaching, lol. Also has me thinking about teaching your book and supplementing it with this video (and presumably the other videos you have upcoming about it)...i feel like so much of getting people excited about poetry is about being like "a real live human being wrote this! Isn't that cool!!!! U are also a live human being! You can also write poems!" This video does such a lovely job of showcasing you as a passionate expert excited to share with the audience that includes and invites non-experts, it seems like it would be a great tool for teaching. ANYWAYS. Teaching has been much on the mind, as you can see. All of this to say, our niche and esoteric art form couldn't ask for a more kind and eloquent ambassador!
My copy of Julia Hungry has just arrived and I am CHUFFED to see that Edna St Vincent Millay is mentioned 😀. I've only read one poem so far in the book and I am already feeling lots of emotions I totally wasn't expecting after buying a book of poetry from someone I follow on YT and am a patreon of. I feel proud and also a teary kind of emotion that I can't quite understand and has taken me by surprise. It's the first time I've done this (buy an 'influencer's' 'product') and whilst I recognise the strangeness of parasocial connection, I feel hugely enriched to have this beautiful book in my life. I wonder whether the people in my life that I know well would ever speak to me uninterrupted about the profound meaning of certain achievements in their life. After reading the first poem I looked at, I immediately wanted to cook beef stew. Thank you sincerely Hannah for being you and for your dedication to your work. Sending my heartfelt thanks.
So incredibly excited about the poetry content. I consumed and wrote poetry for years and the monotony of college and getting a demanding job and etc etc etc had beat the joy out of most of my hobbies. I am excited to have this spark of inspiration with the publishing of your book, cannot wait for it to arrive, and love that you gave those 5 poems for us to consume in preparation! 😊
It is such a treat to see someone speak about a topic they are an expert in and are so passionate about. Your joy and ease with the subject matter is palpable. So excited to read your work.
I love your make-up and fashion content but oh bliss and glory to be able to tune in to an episode of Hannah Louise Poston for a discussion of the beauty of written words and ideas. As a fellow writer (albeit novels, not poetry) I have been silently celebrating your joy since you announced the publication of Julia Hungry but today I couldn't hold back from sharing how eagerly I await its arrival in my mailbox. Three cheers to you!
i preordered your book when you announced it as a means of supporting you, but i will say i was pretty trepidatious about if i would enjoy it or not based on the fact that i have a very limited experience with poetry. but watching this video has me so excited to read it when it arrives. it’s really the way you explained it like listening to a song. it really connected with me and please don’t think it’s silly when i tell you why: i recently decided (yes, it was a conscious decision) to become a taylor swift fan. and im not sure if you have listened to any of her music but this is particular to her album folklore, and its sister album evermore. i first listened to these albums over the summer and i decided to just keep listening to them. i looked up lyrics when i couldn’t actually tell what words she was saying, but i didn’t study them for meaning. i just enjoyed them. and it’s been months and months and im finding new meaning in them all the time. i’m catching new references and layers to the stories. it’s a constant state of revelation. and the idea that i can do the same with poetry is amazing and i don’t know why it didn’t really occur to me before, because what are lyrics if not poetry set to music? so that’s how in this video you made me very excited about both poetry and taylor swift. the cherry on top? her new album coming soon is called “the tortured poets department”
hannah, regardless of what you do, you do it with the grace of a poet! maybe it’s not about the what, but the how. much love! excited to read the book soon!
My gosh you look stunning today. Not to overlook the importance and exciting gravity of the subject of this video, but something about the combination of your outfit and your makeup make you look ethereal. Love love love
Visited a friend today and brought the poems you mentioned and a good mental state to get into when digesting them, as well as shared info re your book. He got a hoot out of the plum poem and both of us absolutely love the wind one. Such a treat!!! Feel free to read us and educate us about poetry - whenever you feel inclined :-) Ohhhh and... took out Shel Silverstein's "Where the Sidewalk Ends," one of my favorite books from childhood and my husband is getting a real thrill out of my reading the poems that have shaped me- "Listen to the Mustn'ts", "Sick", "Ickle Me, Pickle Me, Tickle Me Too", etc. In fact, when we had to cut down a tree in our front yard - I had it brought to be a stump due to "the Giving Tree". Thank you!!!
oh god, the synchronicity of life sometimes really throws me. i saw Hadestown yesterday, it was my first time on Broadway, and then found a Rilke volume of poetry, sonnets to Orpheus right after in a bookshop. Made me think of the huge impression Rilke made on me on high school and I longed to find my old textbook and re-read it. All this to say - Thank you for bringing your full self on here, it's incredible how much it keeps giving.
"The Words are in the Chamber of your chest, come out of your mouth and echo in the house and then fade into silence"... This video is very poetic and I thank you for the prep! Excited to get this book. The Apollo poem made me tear up and I haven't even read it. I have been reading some Blavatsky though, haha xo
Hannah, thank you much for this!! I am so looking forward to more poetry content from you; I had a lovely introduction to the form in high school and have since fallen a bit out of touch, and this is just the ticket to draw me in again ! Will be printing these out tomorrow morning >:)
Hannah, this is so, so exciting. I just finished up my masters and wrote my thesis all about ekphrasis - unspeakably thrilled that the first reference poem was Rilke which I have been turning over in my mind forever. I would love, love, love to hear you speak more about how you feel about these poems… although I am certain I will hear it through your collection as well!
The idea that perhaps there are subscribers here that arrived to watch the makeup declutters, and have journeyed with you towards this - receiving a masterclass in the emotional digestion of poetry - has brought me to tears.
i love the combination of a beauty youtuber and poet, it's very rare and speaks to the visual heart so to speak. You are a poet of beauty in a lot of ways. i'm so happy this is getting published, it has been a battle for years. just like the removal of a liquid lipstick :)
Living where Yeats grew up (Sligo, Ireland) makes the elegy of Yeats by Auden hit even harder - thank you for making me aware of this poem. I'm so excited to read your collection, I have no doubt it will feed me like the most delicious fruit.
Hannah explaining inferences is just a marvellous thing. As a primary school teacher, it just made so much sense, this is how I will explain it to the seven years old from now on. 😊
When I was in college, I heard Maya Angelou speak, and she began by declaring that “Poetry is the backbone of the soul.” I feel like this is also your experience (and indeed, mine). So dang excited that I was able to order this. Congratulations, dear Hannah. May this be the beginning of a rich career.
I am a reader and a musician, but historically I've never been a poetry reader. You have a way with words that I find... comforting but intriguing. I wasn't going to read any of the poems, but as a lover of the story of Orpheus, I had to read the last one you mentioned, and it is truly beautiful. I'm not 100% sure if I'm sold just yet... but you may have made a convert today.
Hannah, I love poetry and I am so excited to get this book. I never like to tell people I enjoy poetry because I always feel like my relationship to it isn’t academic or even fully understandable. But the way you describe reading it with ear and heart really resonates with me. Thank you.
My copy just dropped through the door! I'm away for a little break on Dartmoor for the next few days, and I'm taking it with me. Many congratulations; it's a lovely little volume.
Hannah, I just got my book!!! I was so thrilled when I realized what it was. Had to pay €7.25 in customs tax... Opened it up and read "Julia's Grief" and am blown away. wow............... (long pause) (Waaaah😭😭😭 - - - the twist, desolation, expressed as a will to self-effacement, dispersion into the world - so awfully, exquisitely true, the layers of being you bring out here, and the level of grief, which I interpret as a wish to exit from the self.) What rich language - but what else would I expect from you? And delicate variations. The way that assonance and repetition relate to the sonnet form I haven't gotten behind yet. But there is so much tantalizing detail of sound, no question about it - I want more.
Dearest Hannah -- thank you so much for this video. You have changed my life, before now, in a few ways. I'm doing a no-buy year, inspired by your original project videos - not for the same reasons, but for good reasons, and your candid introspection has resonated with me. You have a wonderful, deep, wise way of seeing yourself and humanity and the universe, and I am so grateful that you chose to share it, that I happened to find you. I am EXACTLY one of those people you mentioned, intimidated by poetry because of this pressure to *understand* it immediately, to get it and know every signficance of it. Your advice to treat it like hearing a song, to print it out and leave it lying around so it is *there* in a quiet moment as opposed to having to carve out a special space for it -- it's worked. It's wonderful. And your recommendation of Orpheus, Eurydice, Hermes is phenomenal. I've had it echoing around in my soul for days. She was already loosened like long hair, poured out like fallen rain, shared like a limitless supply. She was already root. I can't wait for your book - I'm going to ask my husband to buy it for me for my birthday in April (because of course it is my no buy year and it would be against my rules to buy it for myself). Thank you thank you thank you. And please be encouraged to make more videos about poetry - I don't know how well they will do for you in terms of UA-cam as a business, but if your goal is to deeply influence a few people, please count me amongst them.
Thank you so much for this! I didn’t preorder because poetry feels so inaccessible and intimidating to me, but now I think I’ll place a regular order upon release :)
I cannot wait to receive mine!!! So excited for you ❤️❤️ i plan to have a full HLP experience and read the book while taking a bath with a face mask on!
I've been intrigued, yet intimidated by poetry. I just felt like I didn't get it. But, your notes on how to consume poetry make me feel more at ease. Your book is the first poetry book I've ever purchased, and I'm really looking forward to it. In the mean time, I'm going to read and reread the poems you've recommended.
You said it wonderfully, how reading a poem can be jarring. Jumping into cold water is a perfect metaphor. That’s something I’d never been able to articulate before, though it’s absolutely had an impact on my reading habits. I’m a poet, but I have such a hard time reading poetry sometimes. I love your advice to ignore cognitive engagement and to only engage through the musicality and emotion. Thank you!
As some of the other commenters have said, I don't wear makeup either but I thoroughly enjoy your videos and appreciate your creativity and imagination. You are also the first "UA-camr" I have ever followed and looked forward to watching their videos. The way you speak with such elegance and confidence is really inspiring and I am so excited to read your poems. Cheers and congratulations on your book!! May all the hard work and passion you've put it translate to being a joy to many many people for years to come.
Didn’t think I could love you more and then you drop a Can I Kick It reference 💛 and I canter wait to receive your book. And thank you for reminding us that poetry is accessible by all, I still feel intimidated by poetry, and my husband and many friend are poets and writers 😅
I'm new here... About two "weeks old". And I'm just thrilled I've found your channel ❤ Thank you for sharing yourself with us. I find so much joy in listening to you about the way you see the world. Finding out about your book filled me with so much emotion: I love seeing people reach their dreams!! ❤ Be blessed, Hannah. I'm grateful for you.
Congrats on making your dream come true! And thank you for the tip to leave poems around the house - some time ago I bought a gigantic book of poems by Wisława Szymborska (an excellent polish poet, she got a literary Nobel prize and that sounds super fancy, but at the same time her poetry touches everyday life - death, passing time, human nature and does it in such an unexpected way, e.g. there's a poem where she describes death of a human from the perspective of their cat that suddenly got left in an empty apartment) and haven’t had time or opportunity to read it - I think that if I leave it maybe in my kitchen I could read at least one poem when I'm making tea, which would be amazing. Like implementing at least tiny bit of poetry in my everyday life.
My signed copy of “A Clean House” sits framed above my vanity, as it has for 4(?) years. I’ve read it innumerable times. At least a couple hundred or more. And I didn’t realize I mingled with it until about a year ago, when all of a sudden it clicked. It was like I felt the depth of that poem like I’d never really felt depth in other poetry. All that’s to say that I think your advice of having a physical copy of a poem readily available to consume like you would a song is the ideal way to take in poetry. I’m unbelievably excited to get my copy of your book!
also - thank you for the way you hope we experience your poetry, it’s helped me approach my art from a place of the heart and not so much of the mind !
The way I legit cried a little bit when you held your book up! 😢 I am so unbelievably happy for you. I would be grateful to hear who your poetic influences have been throughout your life, like who inspired you in your little days and whose work is the greatest influence on you now, if not on big UA-cam but maybe in a rambling, minimally edited Patreon video.
I have to tell you, HLP, it is a testimony to how much I like you that I've ordered (and plan to read) your book. Poetry has never been my thing. When forced to read it in high school, I almost had the irritated thought, "Why don't they just come out and say what they want to say?" Maybe I've grown up; we'll see. 😉 Again, congratulations!
It's been so long since I've read any poetry, and even that was primarily only within the context of my university studies. Even by my professors, the act of reading poetry was never explained as well as you have done. Thank you so much for making this video. I look forward to reading your poems and sharing them. I purchased a copy for myself as well as my public library. I also look forward to reading the other poems you mentioned. My major was British literature and language study. I have a very dear and long love of mythology, which is my primary exposure to poetic forms. Otherwise, I tend to avoid poetry. I have wanted to branch out but was unsure of where to begin.
My book has arrived (!) on the most perfect blustery, cloudy, stormy day for reading poetry and feeling feelings. Congratulations Hannah; I am so very excited to experience your work in this way. (I am East Coast USA, if others expecting packages are curious).
I Love your precision analytics - your educated, compassionate mind. Congratulations on this next step of your writing’s journey. …’a grappling than a mingling.’ …’relaxing the boundaries around your heart.’ Ooooooph! I can’t love you more for the impact you have on so many of us.
Hannah, congratulations ! I’m looking forward to receiving my copy. ❤ Thank you for sharing the five poems you are jousting with in your collection. I was a creative writing major and HS English teacher in my 20’s, and you are bringing me back to a long lost love.
I have been reading poetry in preparation of your book coming out, so it is super exciting to have some direction to move in next. I love the way you speak about poetry. Your excitement is contagious and I would love more poetry videos.
Hannah, I loved this video. As an ex senior English teacher, I wish I’d had your words when trying to share poetry with my students. I would love more poetry content. I cannot wait to have your books in my hands.
Seeing the glow in your eyes is so delightful! I am a bit torn, but I think I might just read it without doing any pre-research or pre-reading. I want to take it in without fully knowing. This is how I eat French baking. I have some vague idea of how it’s done, but it’s magic to me because I just enjoy the experience of eating it. I’m going to enjoy it like French baking!! Waiting with baited breath from central Canada 🎉❤
I went to see Hadestown and did not know the end of the orpheus myth- it was so surprising in that context and has really stuck with me so I can see why it would be so delightful to think of someone experiencing your work as their first introduction to this (or other) references. Thank you also for your discussion of still gleaning a lot of meaning and experience even when you don't understand (or aren't even aware of references)- it's freeing to think of it that way!
Congratulations Hannah! What a wonderful problem to have. And what a treat to hear you speak about poetry. I'll be waiting excitedly in Australia for the final round of pre-order shipping!
I loved the way you described reading poetry like listening to music, as a moment in time, and I will definitely take that with me into my future poetry reading! I also wanted to share that it made me think of something. There's a quote from the novel Slaughterhouse-Five which has the meter and feel of poetry, and which I frequently recite to myself like a poem: "And I asked myself about the present: how wide it was, how deep it was, how much was mine to keep." Thanks for sharing Hannah, I can't wait to read these poems: both yours, and the ones you've linked!
I was hoping there would be a Theodore Roethke poem in amongst the inspirations/provocations. Thanks for reminding me why & how much I love poetry Hannah. You are an inspiration!
I'm so excited! I tend to be very in my head about things, and friends have recommended reading more poetry to help with engaging emotionally with life. I really appreciate you taking the time to reassure us and ease us into reading poetry as adults outside of a classroom. I hope that these themes continue to be present in your videos!❤
Many things! I haven't been excited by a book of poetry in ... ages. I am in the UK and excited to hear I can expect my copy soon! It is exciting to see a younger woman, or a woman of any age, publishing a volume of poetry we can get excited about now, not having to look back in time for female voices. Also, Lou Reed. I like the analogy with Reed and A Tribe Called Quest. It makes good sense. Poetry really is for any stage and all ages. It is lovely to think about bringing fresh eyes through this platform. Is there a poetry UA-cam tribe? 😮 I am truly excited for this volume, for you, and for new eyes coming to this beautiful form of expression and connection. Cheers from Cheshire and a Roethke fan. x Ps. Thanks for quoting my man, Roethke! I got a wee shiver. His romantic poetry breaks my heart in the best way for nearly 30 years of my life. ❤
Me audibly gasping at the Auden and Roethke recommendations. They are two of my absolute favorite poets and I can’t wait to see how you relate to them in your own work 😭
it looks like you can already preorder the book from Amazon! rstyle.me/+Snv2Drfq_qDSMehMWdsFlA
Yes please!!!
Or even the 5 that inspired you in your works. There's no need to be short;)
+1!
That would be awesome
Yess!!!!!
Even in your video today:
"It is with this information that I comfort myself
When I wake up in the middle of the night thinking
"what am I doing reviewing makeup on UA-cam,
when I'm actually trying to write poetry with my life?"
I take a deep breath and say to myself "Hannah, William Carlos Williams was a doctor. Wallace Stephens was an insurance agent. T S Elliot was a banker."
And then I go back to sleep."
Anyway, all of that is to say, I appreciate all of your creative work, even when it is perhaps less intentionally poetic, and I'm really excited to read your book!
Seconding/third-ing/etc this comment. I watch for your eloquent commentary more than the topic that you cover. Thank you!
I was today years old when I read that you are a poet! This explains why all your videos are so thoughtful and interesting. 😊
@@architecturaldream1 Well said. I feel the same way.
i’ve been feeling bitter and alienated from poetry ever since falling into illness during my creative writing MFA program and being met with nothing but protestant-work-ethic-flavored shaming and academic elitism.
That sounds like heaven! ☕️
That is an interesting idea. Du you read random poems each day, or did you choose certain poets or certain themes?
@@d.-beck7205 Hi! I am reading an anthology of poems that has a poem for every day of the year though you could create this by reading poem a day from a different anthology not curated by the calendar year. It's fun and sets an inspiring tone for the day. Today's poem is about a parent's adoration of and aspirations for their young child.
I was smiling so wide when listening to you talk about the poems! I really hope you'll do more content about literature! Let's do a poetry bookclub or a monthly deep dive on one of your favorite poems, it would be so cool!
Hannah, I never comment on videos but I'm an undergrad currently writing my dissertation on approaching the poetry of Hafez through the lens of encyclopedism and the way you talk about poetry is so illuminating and succinct and eye-opening. i've been pouring over poetry for the past few weeks feeling like im wading through a dark cave and here you come with a torch and a rope! thank you for your content and I can't wait to receive my copy of julia hungry!!!
incredible! thank you for sharing!
Lines like,
"Suddenly I realize
That if I stepped out of my body I would break
Into blossom,"
have stayed with me for many years and still have the power to make me cry.
The way you talk about poetry makes it feels so solid like working with clay. I truly cannot wait to get my hands on your book. Thank you for sharing these five window poems.
Hannah talking about anything> but Hannah talking about poetry>>>>>>>>>
This has given me just pure joy! I am so happy for you!
I’m so excited!💜
As a purveyor of literature and poetry, and a lover of analog, I would take the study of the poem, one step further from printing it onto paper by transposing it in one’s own hand.
At first I mis-read this “transposing it *-onto-* one’s hand and now it’s all I want to do with all my favorite poems
I read that one poem in the Yale Review and was like DAAAAMN! and pre-ordered immediately. Can't wait to get my copy!
I love how you talk about reading poetry like listening to a song, no pressure, you're going to read it again and again.
My book was delivered in the UK TODAY 🎉
Same!
Oh wow, this is very exciting!
This just made me walk to my door and find I have also just received it!!! ❤️🥰
Same!!
I got my book it’s so lovely.❤Thank you Hannah Louise Poston
Your passion shines through in this video and lifted my sadness after a very trying week. ❤
Well Hannah, for “winging” a video, that was extremely articulate, engaging, and educational! I can’t wait to receive my copy in the US.
i preordered your book when you announced it as a means of supporting you, but i will say i was pretty trepidatious about if i would enjoy it or not based on the fact that i have a very limited experience with poetry. but watching this video has me so excited to read it when it arrives.
it’s really the way you explained it like listening to a song. it really connected with me and please don’t think it’s silly when i tell you why:
i recently decided (yes, it was a conscious decision) to become a taylor swift fan. and im not sure if you have listened to any of her music but this is particular to her album folklore, and its sister album evermore.
i first listened to these albums over the summer and i decided to just keep listening to them. i looked up lyrics when i couldn’t actually tell what words she was saying, but i didn’t study them for meaning. i just enjoyed them. and it’s been months and months and im finding new meaning in them all the time. i’m catching new references and layers to the stories. it’s a constant state of revelation. and the idea that i can do the same with poetry is amazing and i don’t know why it didn’t really occur to me before, because what are lyrics if not poetry set to music?
so that’s how in this video you made me very excited about both poetry and taylor swift. the cherry on top? her new album coming soon is called “the tortured poets department”
hannah, regardless of what you do, you do it with the grace of a poet! maybe it’s not about the what, but the how. much love! excited to read the book soon!
I went to Sligo to visit Yeats' grave when I was studying abroad in college! I'm so happy that you are watching from there :)
As a writer who has fallen into many other “day jobs” over the years, this video was a like a warm hug. I cannot wait to read your book.
Hannah explaining inferences is just a marvellous thing. As a primary school teacher, it just made so much sense, this is how I will explain it to the seven years old from now on. 😊
We are so excited to receive your art in a new way.
I could watch you talk about poetry ALL DAY.
“What a pure joy, in the midst of everything”
I just received my copy, can not wait read it 🥰!
I am SO excited for my pre-order copy to come in, and I will happily await its arrival whenever that may be!! Absolutely thrilled for you, Hannah!
Mine came today in the UK. Looking forward to reading some later!
Thank you for this guide to reading poems - I studied literature but was never really into poems. Now I’m excited for your book even more.
Thank you so much for this! I didn’t preorder because poetry feels so inaccessible and intimidating to me, but now I think I’ll place a regular order upon release :)
Received your book as a birthday gift from my mother just now - curious to hear more of both your spoken and written words!
Love from Germany.
I may not be a friend of yours, but you are very much a friend of mine. I’m so excited to receive your book!!
Thank you hannah! The way you presented these poems felt so maternal ❤😂 I’m excited to get your book!
Cecile 😭🥰
also - thank you for the way you hope we experience your poetry, it’s helped me approach my art from a place of the heart and not so much of the mind !
The way you talk about poetry is fascinating, I’d love to see more content like this ✨
Absolutely wonderful video - cannot wait to read your book 📕
Hannah, I loved this video. As an ex senior English teacher, I wish I’d had your words when trying to share poetry with my students. I would love more poetry content. I cannot wait to have your books in my hands.
I received mine today in Australia! I actually teared up for you, it was so wonderful to hold the book in my hands and think about your achievements
Your whole look (hair, makeup, clothes, color tones) is amazing! So elegant and classy!
It really fits such an important video ❤
Hannah, I am so utterly excited. I’m enamored with the idea of printing out poems and placing them around the house. Will definitely give that a shot!
I am so excited for your book! Thanks for sharing the update and providing some context/encouragement for reading your work. I can't wait!!!!
I once wrote an homage to Roethke's "Dinky" about drooling in one's sleep. So excited for your book to arrive!
Ummmm do we need more regular poetry/ literature content? I think yes!!
Yes!
Congratulations Hannah! What a wonderful problem to have. And what a treat to hear you speak about poetry. I'll be waiting excitedly in Australia for the final round of pre-order shipping!
I'm currently reading Louise Gluck's entire works, so this is timely and lovely!
I love hearing you talk about poetry!
I cant wait to get your book.
I am truly excited for this volume, for you, and for new eyes coming to this beautiful form of expression and connection.
Cheers from Cheshire and a Roethke fan. x
Ps. Thanks for quoting my man, Roethke! I got a wee shiver. His romantic poetry breaks my heart in the best way for nearly 30 years of my life. ❤
I’m so proud of you, Hannah! Very excited about this bonanza!
Me audibly gasping at the Auden and Roethke recommendations. They are two of my absolute favorite poets and I can’t wait to see how you relate to them in your own work 😭
