I think a home should be a reflection of you. It is the next layer wrapping ourselves beyond our clothes. So I get twitchy when I see heavily designed interiors. Would you ask someone to select your book collection? Your music collection? Usually these are collections spanning years and/or many genres; while one volume might not define you, the collection as a whole says more. I think that’s why the last image felt strongest to me - the eclectic dining room. (This home will also have longevity which is financially and environmentally prudent.) It also follows another bit of advice: a home should look better, not worse, when “lived in”. I can picture that dining table with remnants of a recent meal, some homework piled on the credenza behind and a cat on the rug, and it still looks lovely. Last thought! I promise! The other strength of the eclectic dining room was the mix of warm and cool hues.

I’m not sure if I was the only one, but I had a visceral, unpleasant reaction to that floral bedspread under the New Romantics. That plus the red carpet transported me back to my great-aunt’s house in early 90s; everything appeared clean but smelled like an ashtray. I’m down for all the other trends except that one

I’m also moving cross country and right now we are in the “selling/getting rid of” phase. For me, that’s very hard. So I’m using Interior Design planning as a kind of therapy to move into the “it’s okay to let go, there’s a brighter future” mindset

re: trend five. i feel like this fits the interior design advice that i give which is basically to collect individual pieces you genuinely love for their own sake even if you aren’t sure that they will all “go” together- because what i think usually happens is that you essentially just end up curating your own aesthetic. the pintrest board of life lol (this is the condensed version of the advice)
I too love to collect things for home that call to me not worrying about the combined aesthetic.

@@sea_g0at I love eclectic. Plus I am from India so every state has its own aesthetic and craftwork, and obviously lots of colours so a collection of things from different states somehow ties up in the end.

Regarding trendy colors, I recommend sticking to pillows and window dressing, relatively easy to swap out and low cost. Mirrored furniture will quickly look dated. It will also look messy if you have dust, pet hair and children or pets that will leave their paw prints all over it. Eclectic will never become truly dated, especially if it is Specific To You !
I’ve always considered mirrored furniture to be classic. Doesn’t it date back to the 18th Century?
Also, anything will look messy if you have kids, pets, dust. Ask me how I know. Lol 😂
@@gracenurse3365I think so, I think 18c mirrored furniture was very gold framed. To me mirrored furniture really brings to mind the 80s. Especially with florals and the peach color.
@@beatdizzy yes, you’re right. I looked up old mirrored furniture and it COULD mean just a vanity or something with a mirror at the top. But there was also a lot of fully mirrored furniture in the 1930s. It has a Hollywood Jean Harlow effect. And if you google “Jean Muir bedroom” we can see an old mirrored couch and armchairs she decorated with in London, and that was using Italian pieces in the 50s or 60s. They’re really beautiful!
I have an extreme hatred of stainless steel appliances. They never look clean without lots of work. White enamel is easier to keep looking clean. So for a kitchen I prefer white enamel or panel appliances.

Counterpoint. Painting is a ton of work if you do it yourself! The taping and moving furniture and prepping walls. And it always looks a bit messy because buying the right tools to make it really clean in all the weird little places is an investment. And it's crazy expensive to have a pro do it. No solution to offer, just wrestling with the high cost of home decor and renovations.
Agreed. Although a nice white is much less difficult. I'd have a pro do any dramatic large color walls!
I live in Vienna in a huge typical Altbau which means high ceilings, a stunning wooden floor and a lot of brass. I painted my husband's room in a very dark dramatic blue and I worked with wallpaper myself. I use a few tools which will last me forever as I clean them properly after using. In my opinion it really depends on the paints you work with. Don't use the cheapest when doing intense dramatic colours as they tend to look patchy.
Of course it is quite some work but I am very proud when I walk into the rooms I painted or decorated myself.
I dunno. Maybe because I love nearly instant gratification -- but I really like painting and don't find it that hard. Blast some music I love, or a podcast - and tape away, then go to town painting. Voila! Presto-insta-chango!
Painting walls is pretty much instant gratification for me, it's not difficult unless there's a staircase height involved. I can cut in without tape and remix paint dregs into new paints. Even ceilings aren't too bad.
The issue is woodwork: I really wanted to play with colour drenching and could just not commit to that much prep knowing that I might need to redo if I just didn't like it.

not sure quite how to phrase this - but would appreciate a video about decors and being afraid to commit. I have a lot of unhung art, plain textiles, white walls, etc the only things I can commit to are sentimental grandad pieces.

You say “nasty old-fashioned quilt,” I say “the pattern I actively choose every time I buy a garment or piece of fabric”. I’ve got a corset made of EXACTLY that print, and multiple skirts and dresses and aprons and quilt covers in slight variations. I’m glad the world is finally catching up to me 😂

Many designers advise to invest in sofas/chairs in your favorite colors. They don't worry about trends as much as you'd think. Your favorite colors are timeless for YOU. BTW, try the Honest Beauty lip balm in "Lychee Fruit" - it's transparent, non-toxic, and not pink.
When it comes to trending colors I think a great way to embrace the impermanence is to buy flowers for your home. (Or grow them) 💐

I've always gravitated to earthy green, plum, etc. tones + organic structures/textures, but lately I've been adding bright red, yellow, chrome, space age-y elements to my home and really enjoying it. It creates kind of an oddly beautiful contrast. Maybe I'm just being trendy 😝
Not remotely a fan of chrome but your rich organic with accents of mod sounds fully plausible. There's no music with a single note. I'm writing this in a cottagey kitchen under a red metal ceiling light.
Similar, in so far as I enjoy interior designers, is very traditional but in slightly off colour mixes. Ben Penreath did a great Collab with William Morris a few years ago.

I had a dining room in almost that exact ochre (it was a paint purchase mistake, I was in a rush and I went with it) and it turned out to be one of the best rooms I have ever had; I adored that color. It was inviting in the daytime and in evening light. Those "modern organic" rooms all look so deliberate, like hotel rooms; that's going to be such a dated look. If you use those same shades in some more traditional shapes (like a chesterfield sofa or a muted oriental rug) it injects softness and timelessness.
I am glad to see we don't have to endure another season of shades of grey, white and marble. I hope we can have a little peek into your decorating. You are having a season, book, baby and boxes. A very energetic season. So excited for you.
If you have a young child, sadly sharp metal furniture and glass don't mix well. Our coffee table went as soon as our son learned to cruise
Color can be calming if you choose well with warm, soft undertones. We have a dark green kitchen and a navy blue bedroom and they are both dramatic and yet calm. It helps if the space is otherwise pretty minimalistic and clutter-free
I always have an off white wall. I have dark, mostly antique furniture, a lot of art and sculpture and books. I move through colour accents in my art and textiles. I have a few pieces of Chinese lacquered furniture, high colour upholstery on my modern furniture and a lot of colour on my rugs and Kilims. I have had a lot of colour in my bathrooms and kitchen but I have a cookbook library and white lacquered cabinets. I’ve gone with a soft blue. Maybe I’ll go somewhere else when I remodel the kitchen, if I remodel the kitchen. If you’re moving, get the renovation out of the way before you move in. It becomes much more difficult once you’ve moved in.
This sounds enticing, as though it could be alternatively layered or very spare. I do find good quality paintings can make a space that might otherwise be bare quietly luxurious. I also love kilims.
I did my bedroom in peach and sea glass three years ago and I still love it. There are lots of neutrals incorporated too. The peach is Benjamin Moore Raleigh Peach on the walls and it’s in an antique Persian rug (with navy, beige, camel, etc). It works really nicely. I highly recommended that paint color for anyone wanting to experiment with peaches. It’s almost like a more vibrant Setting Plaster from Farrow and Ball.
I really like your videos about trends in fashion and interior design, because it’s all just so like,, novel to me. I’ve never really thought about these things as “trends”, because I’ve always just known that people have different tastes and things that they like-and especially as I’ve grown and gotten older and more independent (I just turned twenty-two), I’ve started to have the freedom and resources to discover/pursue what I like in interiors and fashion, and that’s been really fun. It’s been a little scary, as someone who likes what they like now in interiors and fashion, to see your tastes change, but people grow in more ways than just growing “up”, and it’s no less important. Still, as someone who’s never really been in on the trends, it’s an interesting experience to see them through your perspective-though it does make me ask uncomfortable questions 🗿 What IS liking something? How much of myself is affected by wanting to fit in with what I subconsciously notice around me? I’ve limited my social media consumption to UA-cam, but is that enough to avoid becoming something I am not? How much of my personality is me simply being afraid of being “other”? Do I even like anything?
Anyway. There’s a meme I like of Pepe the frog standing on a cliff and looking out on this beautiful mountain scenery, and it says “do not kill the part of you that is cringe; kill the part that cringes.”
That image of mint and apricot looked like the color palette of every millennial's statement necklace/peplum top from 10 years ago 😂 it's the coral + turquoise 2010's trend all over again

There is a polarization of “going back” to the style you had already loved, already completed to its (your) finest, and already lived with, that won’t allow me to ever repeat. I can take a dash of previous styling, but never fully embrace again.
Trending colors, in interiors, fashion, makeup, etc. is one of those double edged swords, in my opinion.
It’s great to see a color that you hadn’t thought to explore and have it give you inspiration. And having that be a bit fluid and cyclical is nice.
It’s also nice when one of your colors, maybe one that’s a bit off the beaten path, trends, because it makes it easier to find things that delight you.
However, color is a very personal thing and can really change your experience, particularly in your home.
When I painted my last home I chose colors that delighted me. They made me so happy and made being in my spaces an absolute joy. My house looked like blue and green Easter eggs, somewhat bright pastels but in colors that I found very soothing so it was a wonderful balance. Particularly because I also love black and white so it all worked harmoniously.
What I’m trying to get at, is that choosing a color because it is trending is probably an unwise choice. Choosing a color that isn’t trending but is absolutely delightful can be wonderful.
For my own personal design style, I hateeee this apricot trend and will not be participating, but I agree it can be done well! It just reminds me of icky church basements and also the 2013 explosion of coral and peach, and I just don’t think I can get on board lol.
I also saw a video months ago critiquing I think a fashion trend called “grandpa chic” or something, and the reviewer essentially said that it’s a trend where young people artificially try to mimic the eclectic, collected, lifetime of taste and style that many older people have. Trend five in this video reminds me of that critique, but I think it depends on how it’s done!
If you go out and try to buy an eclectic, collected, mix matched eras house for yourself at CB2 and West Elm and a couple antique stores all at once, I think it will read as inauthentic. It’s like when you buy brand new clothes that are already distressed or paint splattered - not inherently BAD, it just will not carry that same sense of earned, worn in, loved essence of experience and age that actually well-worn, used clothes naturally have.
I think the trend is highlighting something beautiful about the authentic, lived-in, gradually collected homes that many people’s parents and grandparents have, and I don’t think you can achieve that same feeling by buying things (especially new) all at once! AD can call it a trend, but many people just collected home goods throughout their lives when they found beautiful things or when they could afford them and didn’t (and maybe couldn’t) worry about whether they went together or not. I think there is such a deep, homey, enviable beauty in that, and AD is picking up on it rather than seeing that type of interior as low brow or unfashionable. It’s just weird to call it a trend because that means that a lot of people will try to artificially buy new things that look old and considered and collected, and it just will not have the same effect.
That being said, an approach of slow collection, of considered purchases, of mixing beautiful design styles, and of buying second-hand and/or handmade pieces wherever possible is what I’m striving for. It goes against the desire to have a perfect home right away because I quite literally cannot afford to buy all the beautiful eclectic vintage and hand-crafted items I want all at once. It has to be a gradual, personal process. You can’t haul your way to an authentically eclectic home, and I’m glad ❤

Mood boards please! I think it may have just been the image of the bedroom used for the botanical trend, or the carpet specifically, but it gives me such McCallister house vibes from Home Alone. Everyone’s house was like that growing up in the 90s-early aughts! I just don’t think I can!
My partner and I love rich, saturated colors and plan to paint much of the house in this way. The most relaxing room in our house is our bedroom, painted dark purpley brown on the ceiling and deep blue/green on the walls with black trim. It was the first room we painted when we moved in and it just feels so us and so lovely. It's warm, cozy, and sensual.
On top of everything else did you buy a house??! I watched a video of yours from about a year ago that popped up as a rec and it's the "contain multitudes cheering me up" video in which you said "I feel like I'm on the precipice of a lot of things" and wow. Just wow. If only she knew the extent 💞

Yes to the last noted trend. It’s how I’ve been thinking of decorating for decades. If it’s, as you mentioned, ‘considered’ and there’s a common thread going through the looks - it celebrates the individual qualities of the pieces. I LOVE that jewel tones are back in, they've always been my favorites. i love everything rich and vibrant and deep. this is really speaking to my jewel tone / mid to dark wood / deep florals / plant loving heart. I love stuff that gives you a lot of visual stimulation without being too bright or loud.
I love a move towards a jumble of styles--it speaks so much more to personal style & preferences, a collection built over a life, secondhand treasures.

I’m so glad that peach is trending! Last year, I painted my remodeled bathroom walls to a lovely shade of peach, along with my white tiles with deep green accent tiles. Our color inspiration came from imagery of Moroccan interiors/coutyards. If I can’t stay outside of trend altogether, I like when I am inadvertently ahead of the trend, so it will hopefully “last” longer.
I really love that last dinning room. It looks like a lovely mixture of craftsman and art nouveau with a splash of hollywood regency. I feel like the mixed matched chairs are what makes it really work today, and look like a contemporary albeit luxuriously thrifted room. The fact that the pieces all look like they came from say 1890 to 1920 maybe as late as 1950's gives the room a cohesive vintage look, the pieces match the architecture very well.
I love looking at what’s trending but only to get ideas on what I may do in my own space. Generally I like to mix old and new pieces for a unique look.

Rich, jewel tones and color have always been in my house! I like minimalism, in the sense of "too much" of any of it, but I love a bright rug or couch or something else acting like a beautiful "decorative" centerpiece, but also being extremely functional.

I like the jewel tones one. I find the green tones really calming. But I also think that I am not a trend follower when it comes to my house - I have always just wanted the same thing: calm Scottish woodland with one room being underwater pearly goodness in golden hour. Those please, AD.

I feel like these trends are what ive subconsciously been trying to achieve in my home for years. I was never into the monchromatic beige/grey minimalistic thing, and we're poor so most of my furniture was given to me by family members or thrifted. So the ecclictic colorful mix is already quite present in my house 😂 I literally painted our guest bedroom that warm green of the kitchen cabinets.
I love the mixing eras trend. anything where you can get amazing use of vintage or hand-me-down pieces!
Hannah, this video is so timely for me. My husband and I are just wrapping up an interior rennovation, brought on in part because our 25 year plus furniture is falling apart. One of our goals is to make our house more cohesive and less like, "We tackled one room every five years or so." I think these trends are really appealing. I was not a big fan of the Modern Farmhouse, greige era. I am really drawn to the moodier tones. I'm looking forward to seening what kinds of design decisions you make.
Greens and blues can be very calming and still give you the color you want.

I moved In October. I lost everything I owned and had to start over completely. I am so glad I didn’t look to trends or anything of that sort to put my home together. I did what I envisioned and always wanted. Purple/Turquoise, grey & cream/white are my colours and it’s what I have always wanted to do and I don’t think I will ever regret my purple bar stools & splashes of decor! I get so many compliments (not that I did it for other peoples pleasure) but I finally feel content, relaxed, at peace & calm. 🩵💜🩶🤍

Decades ago I learned to look in my closet to see what colors I’d love in my home. I saw your “closet” as you were reviewing the amber walls along with the deep red in the background. I look forward to seeing what you do in your new home! I know it will be wonderful!!
Oh yes! I love greyish greens - sage green, moss and olives - and painted my bedroom in that same soft green, with yellow accents (the lampshade on the bedside lamp, the throw blanket, some ornaments) and white (my duvet cover is white and yellow, for instance). And I have incorporated all of those into my wardrobe because I love those colours. I also have terracottas and rust oranges in my wardrobe that I would like to incorporate into other rooms of my home, but I'm limited in what I can do in the house because it's not my house.
Love this! I’m doing a home renovation and I’ve started the planning process. Replacing my 25 year old carpet for vinyl plank flooring. Hoping to replace bathroom vanity. I didn’t realize the navy blue color for vanities was a trend and now the trend is the soft green you shown today. I’m staying with white or gray vanity and use the green in curtains, towels and other accessories. Gray flooring is considered a trend that’s going out of style, but I love a light natural wood with a soft wash of gray.
You need to check out Freddie Mercury’s home. It’s for sale and they say they have not changed anything so it’s Mercury style and it has some of the colors you’ve shown today. It’s really pretty. The dining room walls are a mustard color with a floor lamp with an emerald green shade and cobalt blue glassware.
The gray, driftwood style flooring will never be out of style in coastal areas.
25 year home owner here 👋 what has really helped me is neutral furniture (specifically I choose leather) and antique furniture. When i need a change or i swamp out area rugs, pillows, curtains, even paint....but the most expensive pieces stay neutral. antique furniture, as it is made well, and always on trend, and atleast in Pennsylvania, cheaper than new ❤

I’m interested to hear your thoughts in decorating the whole house to sort of match each other, versus individual rooms having their own style.
I’m 64 and have owned three homes. My biggest suggestion that I’d wished I’d known as a young homeowner which would have saved me a lot of money and waste, is to keep your big and more expensive pieces neutral and add color with accessories. We updated our house 10 years ago and I went neutral, somewhat traditional, and I stayed away from most trends. We have a mixture of new and antique pieces.-family heirlooms. I never tire of it and can add color and trends with accent pieces.
More interiors content please! And funnily enough, this year’s AD trends actually seem to be following what I’m already seeing (for a year or more) on Instagram.

How fun, I just moved! I am very excited to decorate my new place. I agree paint is an more affordable way to add color to a space, but I think I'd rather have a colorful sofa and leave the walls a neutral color. I will have to budget for it, upholstery is not cheap! If anyone has had experience reupholstering their sofa I'd love to hear. Seems like I could just buy a new one for the same price! Agree other than the initial assessment of Millenial pink. It’s always been earthy. Tissue Pink by Benjamin Moore was the iconic example, and it’s almost half brown.
I absolutely loooooove the organic modern styled rooms. Fortunately interior trends can be handled like fashion trends. You can ignore them and concentrate rather on your own style 😊
And maaaaybe add a few tiny trends pieces here and there 😁

It's like you read my mind. We just moved and there's a lot to do in the way of interior design. So I have been binge watching design videos but the one person whose opinion I would love to hear is yours and then you made this video :D Would love to hear more on the topic such as guidelines in a similar vein of the fashion videos you made.
I'm 25 seconds in and I just had to stop and say how very much I love your hair in this video. It's my favourite so far, or maybe top 5 now I stop to think of some of your other awesome looks. I'm in awe of how you manage to come up with so many fresh new hair looks all the time.
I love that it is all about mix and match your space like normal people live, cuz they can’t afford cookie cut magazine curated spaces. They need to bring things in and make them look good. I can’t wait to see what you do in your save. I have a pic of your dining room in one of my boards,so I I would love to see your mood boards.
Another great way to add “trendy” colors is with pillows, blankets, and other smaller accessories.
For more interior content, I highly recommend Noah Daniel’s channel! He touches on the point you mentioned about organic elements in his recent upload about honest vs faux materials. I also really enjoyed his take on what modern design means in his other videos!
I personally think this is when Slip Covers are the best thing ever you can buy a very quality piece of Furniture and then if you enjoy following colour trends , just buy the cover for that that piece of Furniture in whatever colour your heart desires because once you no longer enjoy that colour just take the cover off and voila you are back to the beautiful quality piece of Furniture in a neutral colour. I personally enjoy my walls having one focus wall that is either my pop of colour or my darkest wall and then having the rest of my walls a lighter colour in that colour family, and my Furniture being a neutral shade that will go with anything my wall art being in a mix of all the shades in my Furniture, walls , counters, tables with a little colour added in .
