I say this as someone who much prefers big hats to sunscreen. It's cheaper and it means I'm putting less gunk on my face. My skin's quite sensitive/breakout prone - plus I'm just a big advocate of trying to put less stuff on your skin and buying fewer products.

This video just confirms for me, that i am a true maximilist. In every sense of the word. Always and forever! I swear, nothing brings me greater joy, than to open my wardrobe and see my crazy, chaotic, colourful and mostly vintage items. Don't get me wrong, i wear lots of black too, but i can't imagine a world where i don't use clashing colours and prints to brighten my days! This was really interesting and thought-provoking, Hannah. I did except long ago that I am in maximalist: my home, my wardrobe, studio Are filled with vibrant, high contrast colors, and this brings me great joy!
I completely got that some folks are overwhelmed by their closets, uncertain how to put things artfully together, whether that is a kitchen nook or a garden or an outfit that makes you feel great.
I understand the need for simplicity when we are overwhelmed by choices. I understand the desire to look elegant and well put together, as all the models in the example photos. But I vibrate more along the lines of Iris Apfel.
A wardrobe filled with beige and gray and black garments would not soothe me, would not inspire me, but would depress me.
While I’m def not promoting consumerism, We all don’t have to be minimalists just bc it’s “in fashion.” Every fashion is not for everyone person!

I cycle through 4 seasonal palettes. Pastel spring, bright colorful summer, earthy grunge autumn, and goth black winter. I have so many aesthetic moods, they all need their own time to shine. if I mixed them too much all at once it would be chaos, aesthetically diluted, and my closet would be too full. Switching my wardrobe over is something I look forward to, everything old feels new :’)

I love color and novelty, so there are some colors I only wear in warmer seasons (navy, faded neon yellow, white) and some that are only for cool seasons (burgundy).
I have some aesthetic moods, too... Winter is a season that makes me feel sadier. A bright colour makes me happier, I think I would sink in depression if I wore goth black...
I do this seasonally. Witchy for fall. Femme Fatale for winter. Faery, doll and anime for spring; and mermaid/ dessert princess with shiny and Metallics for summer.

So probably a slant take away, but as someone who knits their own sweaters, remembering how the finished garment will fit with my larger wardrobe when looking at all the pretty, fun and squishy colorways. I've realized recently I need to figure out the project before getting the yarn. And now I need to add thinking about the finished thing too. It sounds so simple but when you are looking at craft supplies it's HARD to remember and not just let my shiny crow brain take over

Yes! I’ve knitted sweaters I love but they don’t go with anything I own. Then I make something to go with them hoping they will work with my wardrobe. Ultimately, all of the pieces end up collecting dust. Lesson learned, finally!
I used to get teased for knitting every garment/accessory piece etc in the same version of a barn red - but I KNEW that what what I would love and wear.
Your fashion videos have been helping me a lot, in a way you probably wouldn't expect. You've helped me realise that while I love aesthetically minimalist outfits they're just not for me. I love colours and patterns and playing with them and the thought of having only four or five colours in my closet saddens me. I wouldn't say I'm a maximalist either, bold pattern mixing and multiple layers aren't for me. I guess I'm just a... Mediumalist, and that's ok

Minimalism in style doesn’t mean you can’t wear color. It refers more to clean lines and lack of decoration.

Some people can wear more color in an outfit (not me). Their personal coloring can handle it. It can also be a choice if they like it.

I'm a polychromatic pattern fan and will rarely dress like this but I'm here for the in depth thinking about overall pallet. Seasonal capsule wardrodes with very deliberate color and pattern choices were gamechanging for me.

I’m not about to limit myself to 2 colors because I’m much too chaotic for that, but I do like the idea of being intentional with basic pieces like shoes, bags, and coats. I don’t even own a black coat, but I own a red coat and it goes with everything while still being a cute statement. Same with my saddle brown boots, belt, and bag. Everything else may be telling a crazy color story, but the accessories keep it from being completely unhinged 😅
Really felt this this winter. No matter how great my outfit looked i would put on a navy blue coat that covered everything and it was bought over 7 years ago by a version of me I no longer know. I found a big leather black jacket with warm lining and the first time I put it on I really felt the switch in my attitude. It matches my inner image of myself so much more. And it matches the style and color of my boots as well. Now no matter what i do I cant dress bad bc these 2 pieces always make me feel good 😍

This is both really good advice and advice I probably won't follow. I LOVE playing with color so much. And I'm lucky to have always had a solid instinct about how to mix colors harmoniously. I just assumed everyone could do this. I would tell people "just put the two things beside each other, you can instantly tell if something's off or if they sing together". I'd be legitimately confused when a person couldn't do it. But many people have no clue. Giving very clear rules, boundaries and explanations I imagine is way more helpful to them than what I was offering. She's giving people practical tools that they can sharpen and then use in more complex ways down the line. Fantastic!

And at 73, I’m thinking I need to perhaps rearrange my closet to be sorted just by colors! If it were a walk in, I’d do it tonight! But it’s not and one side is shorter double rods and the other side is a full height rod so alas no rearranging for me tonight, but I may be ready to purge some of those less favorite colored items and start looking at what I have in new ways. It’s a no buy year for me so nothing new, but blessed to be able to evaluate what I do have with fresh eyes! Many thanks!!

I [59] agree that I wish I'd had Hannah's wisdom years ago LOL - as for the color closet arrangement have done this for the past few years and it is truly a game changer - but as part of my no buy 2024 [synchronicity!] I've been doing more decluttering than ever - and it was actually so easy to just eliminate certain colors when I did this last month - I rarely wear them and they just don't 'fit' my wardrobe well. It also makes it so easy to put an outfit together!
A friend gave me some valuable advice. Ask of each item, is it pretty and I’m just attracted to it, or is it handsome and I want to live with it for a long time. Thanks for everything you do, Hannah.

I would argue that if a winter coat completely covers your shirt, then you can essentially wear two different bichromatic outfits-one involving your outerwear and accessories, and the other which is your shirt and bottoms. An interesting idea to avoid wardrobe confusion though.

I've started looking more closely at the shots of a lot of minimalist or minimalist-adjacent influencers and realizing that the size of my wardrobe has been impractically tiny, much much smaller than people who curate deliberately minimalist wardrobes, for nearly my entire life. I struggle with dressing so much and it's become clear to me that the reality is I just don't have enough clothing and probably never have.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong either, but I don't feel that I shop that little? I get tired of clothes or never like them in the first place, but wore them because I couldn't just go out naked. I don't know what to do about it. But I do think that building a capsule around a small number of cohesive colors is the first step, just so I can make outfits reliably at all.
This is really similar for me! Because of changing sizes I realized the other day that I have exactly two long sleeve shirts that fit me well. No wonder I keep feeling frumpy, I don't have enough to wear!
Largely thanks to your wisdom over the past year, I've been able to slowly make positive changes in my closet and work towards building a wardrobe I love. This advice about color simplicity has given me the permission to really embrace the few colors I truly love, instead of having an item of every color I like for "versatility's" sake.

Yes, it's so annoying! I love black, but as an autumn myself, a very dark brown suits me better, but good luck finding that. I do my best to find pieces that are faded black, rather than true black.

Hearing this verbalized feels so soothing. I've had a passionate affair with my predominantly black wardrobe since i was a teenager but i often feel like I shouldn't buy things in black. "We have black clothes at home" so to speak. But having a black version of all of my staples makes getting dressed easier and when I buy things in other colors they can be hit and miss even if it's a color I love and wear.

I've been doing something like this for a really long time, and I love it! (I don't always do 2 colors, but 3.) My color palette is really tight: navy/various shades of blue, white/ivory, various shades of green, and cognac accessories. I have a few pieces in light gray, also. I've long gotten bemused looks/comments from family, friends, and coworkers. (My mom is particularly appalled that I don't wear black--not even to work.) But I find it so. Much. Easier. to shop and get dressed. I feel so much more confident in my personal style. It's also way easier to keep your closet more minimalist/manageable, know what you have, take care of your clothes, and actually wear everything you have. If you're not a person who wants to wear *all the colors, all the time,* I highly recommend this approach.
I love this advise! After seeing this video, I have organized my wardrobe by color and that simple step has make my dressing so much easier! My colors are black, white/cream and red. And I find out some blue/green garments and now I understand why it was so difficult for me to craft outfits with those pieces, they are out of my color palette! Now that I know this, I will try to make outfits combining them with black and white to see what can I achieve! Wish me luck 😅

Great idea. Allison Bornstein closet organising system is to hang everything in type then colour and then take a photo of your wardrobe and when you shop look at it next to the photo of your wardrobe to see if it looks like it goes with the rest ❤

Ok, HLP. You and your “bichromatic color palette” have been living rent free in my head for the past 3 weeks and I still don’t know how I feel about it. I can’t get dressed without thinking about it. "Aesthetically practical" I love this!!!
I've worn all black for the better part of 40 years since my teens. Last year, I decided to try adding some browns in to enhance dimensionality-it has really worked a treat! I dye my hair dark auburn with henna, so this all goes together beautifully & has really improved my style even as this late in the fashion game (mid 50's avant garde stylista). My inspiration sources have always been art nouveau and arts & crafts movements of the early 19th century, and it's so thrilling to still be evolving my aesthetic in new/old ways!
I put on a monochromatic green outfit today in different tones that I didn't even know I had because of your video and I never felt so "right" in clothes before. I don't think you realize the impact you've had on me, I've watched this video twice now. SO thankful for your fashion playlist.
As someone who wears white/indigo, I can attest that this works. I wear solids, small prints, large prints, textured knits, plaids, lots of length and volume... I keep my accessories clear: glass, diamond, lucite, silver. With a pair of black heeled Docs for winter. It never lets me down! :D
I noticed you said that a core color of yours is indigo, and also that you celebrate your black Docs. Do you mix black and indigo? I like all colors edging on black and find them easy to mix in the same way that pastels can be mixed.
@@andreavonwurmb4763 I'm a Cool Winter, so I always never wear black (I find it too hard/harsh on me), but wear black-adjacent colours instead: charcoal, navy, deep indigo, even deepest emerald. I don't mind black Docs since they are far from my skin/face -- if they peak out from under my long deep indigo skirt, it blends well, as you say. Plus, black accessories are easier to come by and carry rain + mud well in winter.

@@nadia.lewis.I'm not sure what my pallet is in terms of any system connected with skin tones, but gem tones, deep blue tones, and greens of all sorts do well for me. I lived in Japan for a while and really loved the way indigo and black seem to be an accepted traditional combination. In general in East Asia that sensibility seems to apply towards darks. I also love aubergine, deep green and slate gray. Basically, the colors that you're describing! I love the image of a long indigo skirt with black docs. As you say, black is readily available, which is also why I buy it.
The goth aesthetic does fit me, but living in northern Europe I find that certain Danish and Spanish brands fit the way I interact with this environment. What direction do you tend towards style-wise?
Mustard, navy, forest green, black and off white have been my colors for years. It happened organically and I realized it later!
Yes. That explains why I hate wearing any color with my bright hair - any other color addition to my otherwise grey/black wardrobe except color matching my current hair feels like way too much. Because it's a third color!

I can confirm that having limited color palette is the way to go. For me it's black, white and red. I've been doing it for years and it is the best thing I did for saving my money, time and energy. Plus I always look put together.
It's funny, when you initially stated this guidance my reaction was like "Nooo, WAY too restrictive!" but then when I went and looked in my closet it turned out I do have two colors that greatly predominate (black and rusty brown) and 2-3 minor colors (white, olive green, and a few mustards) and the random items I own that aren't in that palette are always super hard for me to style and I end up "forcing" myself to wear them instead of gravitating to them naturally. I've been following your 2 color advice since you posted this video and I have loved every single outfit I've worn. I don't think it's something I would have come up with on my own, so THANK YOU for this video!

This insight hits so clearly in my "what's cheering me up lately" lane. Whenever I'm feeling like garbage I notice that I've layered on many odd colors, textures and worn myself ragged with chaos. No wonder I feel lost. To the closet I must go and dress head to toe in a single color/tone/hue, pile my hair high on my head and I'm back to the land of the living. I never tire of this advice you share.

I was shopping yesterday with this method - it made it so easy to "spot" my colours in the store. Sales assistant commented on my all blue try ons (was wearing all blue to the shops too) helped see what would work with my existing wardrobe and felt great. I have moved ALL of my clothes to a spare room. Deciding each morning what to bring back to see what I am "missing"... has helped me realise what to keep and what to let go of.
I am a huge fan of this concept. I would even suggest people to get a colour analysis to first see what colour season they are to choose their best colours. I am also a huge fan of monochromatic dressing and matching my accessories. It definitely helps me stay minimalist, look put together, avoid decision fatigue and enjoy my wardrobe. Also, love it when you said "simplicity is about what's not there".
I was thinking the same. I had my personal color analysis done a year ago and it’s been a game changer! I’m a Spring. Clear, bright colors. I got draped only to find out that I had none of my personal best colors in my wardrobe. So I am now trying to work with my best colors, my body shape AND create a capsule wardrobe that fits my style aesthetic, which is somewhat coastal grandmother meets active outdoors.

As a former poetry undergrad (35 years ago), I’m chuckling heartily at Bichromatic Dressing for the Aesthetically Practical…I love your intellectualizing of our daily beauty choices. I’d love to see you address changing styles as we age…at mine, it’s about not being frumpy.
I find a restricted palette very useful, and having had a Zyla color palette done, find it easy to build a wardrobe based on midnight blue, teal, and bone/champagne. There are infinite variations in those colors and they create an easy, harmonious look with little effort.
Your fashion videos have fundamentally changed how I shop and think about clothing. Thank you.
I actually think articulating my primary and secondary colours has been *the* most useful tool in guiding not just getting dressed, but the process of shopping. There is something to be said for the benefits it provides at home - a harmonious and peaceful closet space, ease of daily dressing, and perhaps most noticeably: simplifying packing for trips. But being able to almost immediately discern that a garment - whilst beautiful - with time, will not make me feel my best, changed everything. It’s empowering. It’s freeing. I don’t agonise over purchasing decisions like I once did. And I know that when I do choose to add something to my wardrobe, I’m so much closer to it being a purchase of longevity and genuine utility.

This helps me to wear my graphic/nerdy T-shirts more in a put together way! I match the colour of the bottom garment with one colour from the print, wear earrings in a similar colour + black shoes to match the fabric of the t-shirt.
This way I put together outfits I had never thought about on my own!
I love doing this and you are right when you say it makes it easier to figure out what to add to your wardrobe. I wear mostly black and grey but I love to add lilac or lime green as my stand out colour, which I usually wear as a top/jumper or a shoulder bag. I considered getting a lime green scarf to drape over my black coat to brighten up the winter! It adds fun but still fits my minimalist wardrobe.

I've been trying to set certain rules for myself when buying clothes, being more concious of the materials that serve me than i used to be, and boy it's hard. I'm a plus size girlie, around your height, with large feet in a remotely situated country-island, with not a great budget, no access to 2nd hand/thrift/consignment stores, and I'm struggling, but this still makes sense. I hope that one day I'll get there.
Also, i wear a lot of jeans, and i don't consider blue to be one of my kain colours, but when i do wear jeans, i only add one colour to the rest of my look (or usually do so). Its like i have 2 main colours plus jean, and then a couole of accents ❤️
This was the hardest lesson, and lesson that took me the longest to learn! After you implement this, and stop just "buying pretty colors" and "just buying what you like" I finally have the stress gone from my wardrobe, plus I love it so much moee
I love this, a banquet of food for thought. I came to a similar place on a different path -- I'm a pale "true" winter and *objectively* I look best in jewel tones (which tend to work well as accents) but I'm not a monochrome-fuchsia kind of gal. I've made peace with the fact that my staple colors I feel most comfortable (and pretty) in are black, gray and burgundy/wine. I do have some bright scarves and handbags I wear with an otherwise monochrome outfit, which seems to satisfy my occasional need for emerald green, cobalt blue, cherry red, etc.
I do this ALL the time, but with maybe five colours in my wardrobe. And I wear... just about three at a time, because my aesthetic is not minimalist. And I have a palette of contrasting accent colours, too! I think this approach is actually very helpful even beyond a minimalist aesthetic, it can be used to create a lot of visual interest as well. I was shocked to realize whatching your video that I dress like this most of the time. With a few caveats, like denim is not a color, so it doesn't count normally, and colorful dresses are okay as long as the colors work with my wardrobe. Also, gray is essentially black/white. 😉 And then I was even more surprised when I remembered that my mom used to tell me when I was little, picking my clothes out for kinder, that sticking to 2 main colors was "best style." I've totally forgotten about this fond memory, thanks for reminding me!

Yes!!! As a longtime wears only all black at all times in all situations dresser, your video on monochromatic and tonal outfits was *THE KEY* to helping me integrate different colors into my wardrobe after years of unsuccessful attempts. Love this tip as an extension of that strategy.
I'm a professional artist and I totally know why you give this advice. However, as a painter, I am trained in colour and will do my own thing. BUT, your point about already having chosen your basic colours is very true! We naturally gravitate toward those colours that make us happiest and should use that ability in choosing a wardrobe. I love green! I mean I really love green!!!! And yellow! And grey. Heres the thing, all colours have that wide area of deviation. As you said, white includes cream and some light greys, the same is true of greens and yellows. I have olive to leaf to gold greens and i wear them with all sorts of shades of yellow, grey and black. Black is either the absence of light or the mixing of all colours, so it really goes with everything. Colour theory is facinating to me and our reaction to it, is very individual and apt to change with life circumstances. Minimalist is practical and elegant. I'm a hobbit who loves colour, food and comfort.
The black parka is perfect to go with outfits, but wait until you take it off at a bar and have to identify it among a sea of black winter coats (not speaking from experience, I absolutely didn't start crying at a work event because I couldn't find my coat with my car and house keys in the pocket). I wish my charcoal gray coat was less heavy duty, much easier to find it haha
This video has a lot of food for thought! I'm still never going to be a wardrobe minimalist, but the idea of a deliberate and strong preferred color palette as a guide is evocative. In particular the discussion of a white/black/accent wardrobe has me thinking of the color grading of Sin City. Very striking!
I only really follow this when traveling. It's very useful to have everything in the luggage go with everything else. (red and black). But then when I get home, what a treat. Olive Green! Beige! Gorgeous and delicious.

This is such a great companion philosophy to the Tibi color wheel. There are 4 levels of saturation - each its own "ring". Black is in the center with warm and cool neutrals on the next ring, shaded colors next, then brights and their tinted counterparts on the outer edge ring. Very interesting and touched on some color instincts that I previously was not able to articulate/ put into solid practice. Thank you for sharinf this strategy! I learn so much from you❤
I love your point about looking at the item in context with your wardrobe, and not in isolation. I've slowly learned that lesson over the years. It is easy to say yes to the show pony pieces, when realistically, I need a large majority of workhorse items.

I love this advice but it leaves me in a big dilemma regarding my blue jeans. I want to keep wearing them but, with the exception of jeans, it's not a colour I want to wear a lot of. Maybe I should just get black ones next time...
This video is so, SO great and the concepts are so well-explained! I love the sophistication of minimalist tonal dressing, and I do love color. But I realized, watching this, that I actually have what feels to me like an imbalance…too few of my beloved foundational neutral colors and too many one-off pops of color. I don’t have the ability to combine many of my colors with a similar item in hue. I think I now have a much clearer path to decluttering in a principalled way that will feel really good to me. ❤
I think having an in-office job from 20 years old to now has prolonged the junior high school mentality of impressively rarely repeating an outfit and wearing as many different styles and colors as possible, lest I seem boring to someone. I know it sounds silly as I’m in my 40s, but it’s somehow a difficult paradigm shift. It has lead to a closer full of clothes I rarely wear and a few things I wear out due to frequency. I am graciously trying to embrace the wardrobe minimalist method. If it weren’t for my inner 13 year old people pleaser worried about what Jane thinks about my outfits, I would be a female Steve Jobs wearing a black top and blue jeans every day. Thank you for giving me more tools to help me on my journey!

I've just cataloged my entire wardrobe in the indyx app and only now am I realizing why it's harder for me to style my dark green pieces when my colours are pretty much the same as yours.
I do something similar, which is I try to stick to ‘tints’ - so any colour but within it is a mix of white. I shop the rainbow but it harmonises better for me. If there is grey or black, even just a drop, it’s out - I know it will overwhelm me. I’ve found this the best way for me to have a pretty vast range of colour but it’s cohesive (at least to my eye).

So, I turned over my wardrobe to the spring/summer clothes.
It seems my main colour is black all year round but my accent colours in winter are more jewel tones and in summer more beige and neutrals.
Today I wore an outfit mostly out of items I didn't click with before. Too big black trousers, black t-shirt with leopard trimmings in light brown. I accesorised it with brown Birkenstock Sandals and brass earrings I NEVER wear - and I felt great 👍
I decided that brown-beige-brass is a colour family.
The best thing is: I am inspired to wear my different statement earrings again. Bold matching earrings really elevate every outfit!
This video validates me, because I usually feel guilty for shopping the same colors over and over.. 😅
You can do this with more colors by making all your accents bright. My palette is black and navy with accents of aqua, burgundy and kelly green.

My favourite combo is black and green. I wear, wash and wear again my only green sweater. It was almost decluttered and is now a staple.

Totally agree. This is a wonderful way of thinking about wardrobes. I have heard a related theory - which I keep thinking about trying. When you get the yen to add some color purchase 5 items in that color. Not all clothes - maybe 1 piece of clothing and 4 accessories in items that will go with your base colors.
I’m very happy with my black to dark grey and shades of white wardrobe , but sometimes I start thirsting for pink or aqua or emerald green or deep red.

I love this advice. Monochromatic dressing has made my looks feel so much more polished and I like the contrast that an extra color can add to the outfit. I love creativity, looking beautiful, but get so tired of searching for the right color, fabric, price. I like how this simplifies and focuses the process. I hadn’t consciously thought of including all the accessories in the color scheme, that is a great tip that I’m going to consider.

Not only is this helpful advice for looking chic and spending wisely, it’s a brilliant way for me (someone who is both medically color deficient and very much into fashion) to think of how to dress myself.

I realized I do this subconsciously. I even match makeup to this. I love your point about different shades that fade into eachother. My main colours are also black and white. My accents are blue/purple/green (ones that fade into eachother/are debatable as to which one they are) and red/orange/pink in the same fashion. It genuinely makes things so much easier and I do have a lot of variety just with the shade differences
I've loved all your content in this series so much. I traveled so much when I was younger I naturally strayed into the minimal capsule wardrobe, but only recently have I had the resources to really curate my style in a way thats really a personal style as well as being comfortable/functional.
As somebody with autism & ADHD, I have two sides to dressing myself, it has to be comfortable and easy. I need to upgrade my style, I find myself wearing a graphic tee, black leggings and boots(black) or tennis shoes. My bag is always khaki green, been carrying the same bag for 4 years now, my next bag will also be green as it goes with EVERYTHING I wear & is a utility I can not fuss about. I really like the way you broke this down, I've been doing something similar for years as it makes it so much easier for me to function.
I have been inching my way towards minimalism for two years now, and everything you say resonates with both my aesthetics and sense of letting go and reaping the benefits. Yes! I have done this for years now. I struggle to not ever ever wear other colors that I enjoy, so for the most part, I only make an exception in the activewear category :)

Because i'm so sensitive/particular about color, i've been doing this without even knowing! I have the few colors i like (black, blue, green, and the occasional cranberry) and i never aesthetically want to wear anything else! Love how well you explain this as a conscious choice ❤
I’m fond of monochromatic living. almost everything I purchase is orange or pale pink (or black/white). I find that this causes me to purchase a lot less because I just won’t do unless it is the correct tone
Interestingly enough, I too own that beautiful blue Babaa sweater, and then when I saw you purchase your woven bag I also bought one - in a similar cobalt blue as the sweater! And also have trousers and shoes in that bright blue. I think I know what one of my colors is and am excited to try applying your wisdom to my wardrobe 😊💙
