I'm such a rebel. I knew the signs at my last job and I hit them with a curve ball. I cleaned out my office completely and my boss was soo shocked and asked why I did that. I didn't respond to him lol. I also signed up for FMLA which gave me 90 more days of paid leave until I found a new job. Sometimes you have to let them know that you are not afraid of them.

I still think there is a difference between being fired and laid off. Being fired hurts. Being laid off they can call you back and can mean the company was just looking to cut corners. Being fired means your boss wants you gone and to never come back. But I agree when you say either way you can't go back because the company won't let you.

I can't believe I found this video right after I quit my job at a nursery. Initially I loved the job and I didn't complain and I was also a high performer. Everyone initially loved me and greeted me daily. But the longer I worked there, the longer I began to feel like I just couldn't take working there. I begin to notice my coworkers were acting different and strange, I also noticed that I'd request more training in other areas and my manager would never actually lend me those opportunities. I also noticed that everyone at the job began to get distant from me. Long story short, my inner radar was telling me to get out of this job about the third day I worked there and I ignored all the red flags. I felt as if that no one really wanted me there nor liked me and it was all fake and games. Then the moment the idea to actually quit and explore other options came, that's when my manager began to micromanage me and complain about every little thing that I did. She was the devil in disguise, or otherwise, a wolf in sheep clothing.
Just say I was in a greenhouse and there's two sides of the greenhouse along with two water hose (a hose for each side of the greenhouse). Lets just say I take the hose from the other side of the greenhouse, she'd make a serious face, "You took my water hose. Then would turn it around with some fake positivity and say "It's all right I'll get the one from the other side!"
Or one day she lashed out on me because I had plants too close to a control box. But Initially I didn't put it there, my superviser recommended me that I should utilize as much space in the greenhouse as I can. When she conversed with my superviser about it, I noticed she was acting as if she was actually angry.
Basically she got angry over any little thing I did, which any of those things didn't really matter nor negatively impacted the business in a harmful way.
The moment you feel like they don't like you, the moment they don't and what I learned is that if someone doesn't like you it DOES affect you because once someone thinks bad about you, they're going to invest in that and when someone doesn't like you it DOES affect you rather we like to admit it or not. Your day to day interactions will become even more challenging especially in the workplace.

You are absolutely correct . I saw all four signs and felt it, but I didn't realise where it was headed. ...atleast you are kind enough to explain it. ... being laid off does not feel good at all. Everyone suddenly believes something is wrong with me. No one understands how it feels. I even started thinking of myself as a failure😥. It has not been an easy feeling months, but I don't intend to stay down. I'm doing all I can to be back and playing right.

Early June 2008, I had several projects that were taken away from me from the director of the program (five in total) and reassigned to the reception desk. Then on June 10th, I was being informed during lunch-time that I was being let go. She claimed it was due to budget cuts than the real reason I was being terminated. Over the course of my time there, we had butted heads and she wanted me to know if I wanted to stay or leave and knowing that if I left voluntarily, I would have lost receiving unemployment benefits.

Great no-nonsense video and it's all so true.
Got fired very recently and as much as it hurt, I felt it coming but didn't proactively do anything about it, so I'm definitely to blame for my bruised ego. I was on a PIP without being told what a PIP was or that I was on one. I had one big slip up a couple weeks ago, a bunch of little things that had happened in my time there came to light, and a week after my mistake, they were sending me out the door. One of the warning flags I would like to mention was when they had an outside hire fill my manager's role after my first manager had left. There were plenty of competent people that had been in the department for years and seemed to be ready to move into a managerial role. Right off the bat, that seemed fishy and I should've left as soon as that happened. As the new regime took charge, I had the feeling that they were going to clean house and rebuild the department to their liking. I was the first to go but I think I was the first of many and I expect I'll hear of more soon unfortunately. I wish I had seen this video before this all happened. I experienced every sign to a T and chalked it up to me being paranoid. I'll learn from this whole experience and move forward, but remember to look out for your own before anyone else. If you feel bad leaving your understaffed department, or that you need to prove your loyalty, or whatever reason you can come up with, it seems they will kick you to the curb without a second thought if you're not to their liking.
I wish all you good luck in your careers, and if yours has also come to a sudden halt, things will eventually begin looking up and tomorrow is always a new day.

Darnell, terrific video. Great no nonsense advice. Been on both sides, had to left a couple people go years ago. No direct reports in a long time. One layoff, one firing years ago and current job is up in the air. Shortage of staff, increased “goals” with a 25% higher work load than last year. May end up on an “action plan” (pip). Will be polishing my resume. Try to survive, will have to see. Worst case scenario I would drive Uber for a while and dig into savings until I found something else. It would suck, but I have survived before.

Too funny! While it's not a fun topic, there's also not much need to sugar coat things but a sense of humor is a must!
In my case though, none of these happened. My boss didn't put anything in writing, I wasn't removed from projects (actually I was on several high-profile projects up until the day the department was let go), no PIP, and people didn't act weird around me (as most of the company was shocked by the news). What did happen that tipped me off was that people in key support roles left the department/company and their jobs were put on hold and not backfilled. Ding, ding!

Company makes a decision to divide the CSR group into two groups, where the larger group manages the $5M contracts and the other smaller group manages the $50K contracts only. Basically, the manager figured out a way to eliminate employees whom they can't stand by saying your gonna be laid-off soon but they don't know the actual exit date. In the meantime, they hire lesser qualified employees to take your place as you sit there still doing the work and waiting for your exit date. Without warning one day, the manager walks the small CSR group out the door with package in hand...yep, you've been fired.

I've been let go from GE and other companies. The GE dismissal left me in a different frame of mind that some of the others because it was not personally directed at me, and a lot of others in my work group were also let go due to the need to cut "head count". So I prefer to call that one a "layoff", "downsizing", or "reduction in force", not a "firing". I never considered coming in the next day, though. If they didn't want me, I didn't want them! In fact, my last day was supposed to be a Tuesday, but they told me I didn't have to come in that day and Monday, but I still got paid for those days.
I got let go from another company for "lack of work" quite a few years earlier, when I was much younger and less mature. That time, they only needed to cut one, and I was it. I know why I got chosen, and I was put on a well-deserved performance improvement plan, although it was probably not called that. I was fired because they really didn't have enough work and funds to go around but also because I messed up a lot.

i then got another job a month later at very small company only to be let go 5 weeks later. they only planned to hire me for a single project but knew nobody would come for that one project. i now got hired again after a few weeks. and boy its a relief but stressful because i don't want to get laid off again at least not right away.

This meant I knew where to find gaps in record keeping, regulatory compliance, and company policies. Soon into my tenure I asked a couple of my new coworkers if they knew very much about the record keeping system because I couldn't find key records for certain required actions. I think those coworkers discussed it with the manager. I was soon tasked with the most ridiculous activities, sent on wild goose chases, and pursuit of the manager's white whale projects so to speak. In my opinion it was a tactic by my manager (a sociopath if not a psychopath) to keep me away from the real job I was hired to do. I was set up to fail. I had a lot on the line at the time, could not walk away, and rode things out until I was terminated. I regret that I did not inform corporate counsel and upper mgt. of the shady and half assed way the department had been run.

Since you been fired, then get on with finding your next job! And pay close attention for the reason you were placed on the PIP in the first place and make sure it doesn't happen again.

    • Followed by two meetings within a month with less than 15 mins notice.
    • second meeting had 7 people in attendance, with a transcriber.
    (Kept my cool)
    2. Two others were hired behind my back while I was out on FMLA FOR 3 weeks.
    • I no longer was in charge of training new hires
    • New company says “nothin personal” but we’re taking away half of your hours - I’m no longer full time. New hire is.
    3. No pip plan, my performance is 100.
    • this is the scary part
    4. People are asking questions, but they have my back, to my face. Haven’t heard anything bad
    • higher ups will not look me in the eye.
    • higher ups making jokes about how I was late my first two days back (yes I was an hour late) I was out for a non elective surgery
    • we are “re-organizing”, new company will not speak with me, stopped giving me my lunch and rest period, barely was able to use the bathroom, one of the reason I ended up having surgery and sick.
Oh yeah.... new “supervisors” every other day. No answers to my one question. And when I finally got somewhat of an answer, the office Mgr told me to “bare with her”. I went from 42 hrs to 20 hrs a week. I used to be loved by the higher ups
I’m on here for these reasons. Sprucing up my resume.

I would suggest that there were inconsistencies with the employee handbook and the job description was way too dull. Onboarding process was way too disorganised and chaotic and you literally don't know how to spend your day due to the lack of consistency.

Agreed. Fired is when you are fuccing up, coming in late constantly, falling short on deadlines repeatedly, getting into verbal altercations with coworkers or supervisor, and if you are civil service, losing your security clearance. Fired raises the chances of you not getting a good reference from your previous boss.

I had to fill one out last year and I was about 6 to 8 months in employment. Currently I am about 20 months in. I did have a gut feeling that they may can me soon, even though I do a lot of work, especially work my co worker neglects and makes excuses for why she didn't do it.

All my previous jobs has been all over the place i told every employer that I went to that I had a disability not going to go in to detail on what I have but every job I had the employer never gave me a explanation or a reasoning on why I lost my job so like I went in to work one day the manager was like polite and saying hello to me then 15 mins after as about to start my work shift next thing I know I lost my job. I don’t get how because I had customers giving me good customer feedback etc I worked my ass off. And this is how it started so I come in to work before 9AM no one told me there was a staff meeting by the counters in the store as my job wasn’t behind counters I had multiple job roles except behind counters so I went to open the shop shutters then side manager or whatever you want to call the person shouted at me so I was like okay she moaning over 2 mins as I opened it 2 mins early so I waited till it was smack on opening time she shouts at me again then tell me to fuck off down to the bottom of the shop where the warehouse is then 15 mins later she called me next to the counter after we opened the shop finally she tells me that I lost my job. To this day I don’t have a clue what I done wrong. So there are 4 managers 1 main one and the 2 are his sons and the woman was a side manager and the main manager and his 2 sons said I was a good worker and to keep it up. But I don’t get it if they said that why get rid off me?
