thanks, my 2000 300,000 mile van would not turn, the key that is, I'll try tomorrow. Left it at the restaurant, Kinda awkward, wife's birthday, had friends with us, they ubered back home....we got a ride later. no big deal 1 mile from house. This is best van ever, I'll use your technique. Keep you posted

I have a 2001 Sienna and had the same issue. All of your steps to remove it were very helpful, but there was one extra step I had to do. I have a illumination ring around the front of my ignition cylinder. This had to be disconnected by removing a small gold screw that was holding it in place and unplug the cable for it from the port it is clipped into. After removing this small module I was able to push the pin and use pliers to pull out the cylinder.

Thank you so much for this video! My Sienna key completely shut down and I wasn't looking forward to spending $$$ at the shop. Your video gave me the confidence to do it myself and I am so appreciative. Thank you!

Thanks! Saved me $500!! Dealer wanted $175 for the part (auto parts store wanted $125) plus 2 hours of labor. Ordered the part thru StockWise Auto $25 - took me 5 minutes with a screwdriver and pencil (and i am not a handyman). Avoid the dealer people!!

Thank you so much for this video I've been struggling with the same issue for the last few months to the point where I was stranded outside of a Walmart with my two-year-old for 3 hours trying to get the ignition to cut on, greatly appreciate you making this!

Good video, but i didn't think it was necessary to remove the 10mm bolts or the black panel. You can reach the key cylinder release button without it.
Use a small screw driver like at 8:05 just like he showed it. I didn't need the right-angle screw driver, but just a straight 3" screwdriver, but I have a 2002 so maybe it's a little different.
I didn't disconnect the battery either, or disconnect the wire at 3:29. I don't think there's anything electrical going on in the switch. It's really all mechanical.
Compared to how complicated I expected it to be, this turned out to be one of the easiest repairs I've ever done on a car - 10 minutes.
    Thanks for the video!!

I just did it on mine... WOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!
I couldn't get the outer ring back on the aftermarket part, but who cares?
You don't need to 'reprogram' it if you get an aftermarket part from an autoparts store. But the part cost me 185 bucks. Ouch. Yeah, Im a freakin car guy, at least for today. Tip - a long T hex tool works really well for the push in the button thing.
I was lucky that I could still get the key to move after I bought the part at the store.
People: replace it the first time it starts sticking - it only gets worse until you can no longer turn your key.

You have to basically vibrate the key to get it to turn...and weirdly enough the wheel has to be straight. At least that's how it worked for me

We bought a "03 Sienna with 200K ($500) and it has the same problem. I'm hoping that it's the same repair as your "99. thank you

Success ! I think the most difficult thing (the rate determining step) was getting the old key to turn past accessory , key needs to go past accessory and then turn it back from "ON' to accessory , thank you again

Or for about $45 you can take your ignition switch to a locksmith and have them rebuild it. That way you still have one key for the doors and ignition.

    • @Whiteboardcoder
      @Whiteboardcoder  5 років тому

So, just pull this ignition cylinder out and bring it and they key to a locksmith? for $45 that does not sound too bad...
