Great video . I live in the uk .
I was a fabricator welder for most of my working life .
But a spinal injury from forest Rallying in the mid 80s eventually caught up with me in 2007 .
I can't work these days . But I've learnt that pottering around in my shed does me the world of good .
Currently loving tinkering with garden machinery . Latest is an old generac generator that had spent however long out in all weathers .
It had stuck valves , rotten fuel . It now runs sweet and produces ample power .
My partners lads are always turning up with kit that won't run.
Watched a few of your videos now and learning a lot.

I've had several of these apart (various models) and in my experience 3 out of 4 times the fuel lines fail before the carb gets a chance to get clogged or damaged. New fuel lines and a primer bulb and they are out the door sometimes without any adjustment. The others need a tear down, cleaning, and rebuild kit. Haven't tried a complete swap yet but I may have to the next time one comes in that doesn't have a rush on it. I am jealous that this one was so clean, most of mine come in filthy.

I have actually bought a brand new poulan 4218, I live in interior Alaska, I pride myself on being a decent mechanic, and own several jonsereds, Husky, stihls, they are my go to saws that run in 90 degree to -45f saws, I figured what the heck, so I ordered one up for shits and giggles, finally got the little guy in the mail, gassed and oiled her up, D.O.A. this thing would not even fire out of the box, checked for spark, seemed OK, a bit weak, fuel didn't look to be the prob as plug reeked of fuel, cranked on the sonofabitch until the plastic recoil sheave snapped in half, not one to give up, I jb welded the sob and bolted it back together, same shit as the day before, this time it coughed, must be getting warmer,boy was I wrong, finally stuck a compression tester on her she literally bled down faster than a stuck pig, but here's the real kicker the crank was so far out of true, the clutch looked like a pivoting pig, next step walked in the house loaded my Ruger Redhawk 44 magnum with Garret 320 grain hammerheads and immediately retrieved my sick poulan, took her back for her final farewell, put her out of her misery, scattered her in a million pieces around the landfill, I really wanted to believe in the little green goblin, guess it just wasn't meant to be bummer.........

Very well done video! Thank you! Just as Luis noted below, I have the craftsman version of this same saw. I have the rebuild kit for this carb and going to rebuild it. I think the same Item that you replaced in the carb is bad on mine as well.

Nice fix. When you have the muffler off you may need to clean the spark arrestor screen by burning it off with a torch. Also try turning the adjustments all of the way in, counting turns, and setting them at the original factory settings before turning them out more. I always clean the carbs before getting a new one. Usually just the diaphragm. Looked like the fuel might be the wrong mix due to excessive smoking. Usually 50/1 mix with synthetic fuels. Thanks for the video's.

These specific models of chainsaws require a 40:1 fuel mixture
I just found last week an older craftsman chainsaw, and to my surprised it has a nearly identical carburetor like this one just that the fuel port locations are different. Everything about this chiansaw is practically identical to my craftsman chainsaw (the color of the plastics it the only other difference ... literally) Now i know that I can buy the kind of carburetor in this video if i ever needed to.

@@HomeGaragechannel if you want to know my model number for my craftsman chainsaw is 358.350440. It is a little different than this one since mine is a 38cc with 14 in bar. Also keep in mind that parts such as primer bulbs and gas/oil caps are shared between craftsman, poiulan, and husqvarna models. So if you cant find parts for a craftsman model like mine, just do what I did, search everywhere for that part but say you got a husqvarna chainsaw.
I found one of these on Facebook a few weeks ago. I just got around to fixing it the other day. The fuel lines were rock-hard on mine. Oil leaked from around the plug. I ordered a full carb replacement with a plug and lines. The lines were so hard to run, I had to flip the supply and return lines because the supply next to the primer is completely blind to fish into the tank. It’s practically behind the threads of the gas cap on the inside. But it fired up on the first pull with the new carb, so there’s that.
yes I think the design could be better too.
I always try to repair before I replace things. For me its about problem solving first then replacing.

I agree when you watch videos about fixing small engines it SEEM"S to be easy and with more experience doing it I found out it CAN be easy BUT not all the time . I found knowledge from experience was the best way to fix a piece of equipment. That being said I jump rite into being a small engine mechanic (both feet )learned the special tools you can use so-on. Now I have decided as a retirement hobby /Job to start a LLC company . I keep busy with repairs from around my neighborhood and flip machines also . I am a troubleshooter at heart and a if I know how it works I can fix it kind of guy . HG you say it rite in your disclaimer this "might not be same machine as yours " . SO yea if th fix videos looked hard to do and almost imposable to figure out no one would watch the videos having a glimmer of hope from a machine being fixed might give a person confidence to fix it it can be a good thing to step out of the comfort zone I would say ..

I have a Poulan chainsaw that every time you set it down to move a piece of wood, it shuts off. I have had it to the shop many times and they rebuilt the carb several times and still acts the same. Has been this way since new. The spark arrester screen has been removed and all fuel lines replace each time the carb was worked on. It lives up to it's name in that you have to keep pullin on it to start it back up. It runs great when you keep using it cutting, just can't set it down to move pieces out of the way in order to keep cutting.

@@HomeGaragechannel It was taken to a business. A couple of businesses actually. A couple of times to each one. No one can seem to figure it out why it acts the way it does.

@@HomeGaragechannel Was told by the one place that they checked the fuel system for leaking problems and the other place said they checked the compression and that it was very good. As I said, it has been like this since brand new. I kind of regret ever buying it. I don't use it much, I also have an old Echo CS-330 EVL that I use mainly. The Echo is so old that it doesn't even have a chain brake. The Poulan pretty much sits there collecting dust.
Try adjusting the gap on your spark plug they're usually to tight
yep i,d try a carburetor aka carby inspection by disassembly and see if anything needs to be replaced before replacing it etc.

I've been a 2 cycle wrench for along time, and I can tell you have to.I guess my question is this, I see where you consistently use clear fuel lines, some where along the line it was instilled in me that tygon was the only way to go, so i'd like to hear your thoughts on the difference between the two,and why you use it. Thanks Darryl Thompson for the comment. It's always been an issue of cost. Clear line is fairly cheap and I always thought tygon line is expensive. However with Amazon around tygon is cheap so I'll be using it more often now. I don't believe tygon line is completely ethanol resistant but it's better than clear.

I own a weed eater similar Walbro carb. Rarely used so carb problems are frequent. Decided to drain carb. In future will drain the tank after using and run the engine dry. Have 4 carbs which I will rebuild but no name brand carbs are as cheap as a rebuild kit. This makes choices less clear.
you are absolutely right about that. I try to rebuild first then go cheap carb second usually.
Many videos talk of the availability of cans of stabilized mixed fuel (40:1 or 50:1). Doesn't go stale and no ethanol problem. Something more to think about.
absolutely. premixed fuel is very stable compared to gasoline.
I have prcs16 battery operated chain saw I can't find the nut that goes on the chain tension knob it goes in hole on the bar

If I wanted to make sure that the main jets internal check valve is not allowing air to enter the fuel chamber,I would perform the Mason jar test by filling it full of water, submerging the carburettor then with either a small hand held air pump or a syringe then check for air bubbles at both at the check valve & the return line to make sure the check valve is closing off & that the needle & seat is closing off as well.
I would order the check valves in bulk if I was replacing a lot of them or if it was a one off thing I would order a new carburettor for it,I've had no trouble with the $16 AUD Chinese carburettors.
If the engine was flooding,I'd test that first before rekitting the carburettor !

I have a poulon wild thing chainsaw been sitting in the barn, I replaced the fuel lines primer bulb and carburator, I cant get it started there is compression and spark, But it floods like carzy every time i tried, I remove the spark plug pull the rope the gas splached all over me, I am ready to give up on it?

sure no problem, I would remove the plug, and let it set for a few days then replace the plug, and DO NOT CHOKE it, and try starting it, tell me what happens.
I'd get a kit and if the Poulan I had was setup with that carb style, I'd still have it and it'd be running. Thanks and Blessings

Cheap replacement carburettors are a cat in the bag. I tried a NEW Proline carb, and was quite happy, at which point I promptly threw out two chinesium (about 10 or 15 dollars each) that wouldn't properly adjust. If (in my opinion) one is going to replace the carb, buy a good one, especially if it is an expensive saw. Should one risk ruining a nice machine with a cheap POS carb? On such chainsaws, what would you do if there was no sparks on sparkplug?
I would reset the air gap, on the ignition module to the magnet on the flywheel, then test again. IF that doesn't work I would disconnect the ground wire to the coil, and try again, and it still doesn't work, I would replace the coil.

I have a 16 yr old Poulan, my go to. Cranks and runs like a champ.
Of course, I’ve replaced fuel lines and primer bulbs over the years, but it’s a champ.
I did replace the carb once. I got from a county in S Fla that was gonna pitch it 7 years ago. All because of a broken fuel line.
The jail trustees ran it hard, still works for me.
If an exact carb was less or very near the kit price, new carb., every time, that’s what I did.

Yes I would remove the carburetor examine it as well remove everything into a ultrasonic cleaner and if needed would replace with carb kit
Also we change primer bulb check gas line Inlet lines , oil line Weil I’m into it and I just the card as needed

Home Garage what should i do if I put gas in the carburetor throat put it still won’t start I have plenty of compression I will check if I have spark
I would have ordered both a carburetor and parts to replace damaged parts first if not put the new carburetor on and be done after fine tuning the saw

@@pyrog.c.c89 there are many different types so you have to check the marks on the carb.

Just a warning, don’t run the saw for a long period of time with the cover off because the cover directs cooling air over the cylinder, which is important to make sure it doesn’t overheat.

The answer to your question, in my view, is if you suspect carburetor problems or find them, just throw it away. Or, save it for parts. Carburetors are $15-$20 on Amazon

Those saws have really cheap crankshaft seals. I would have pressed tested before doing the carb

yes and so far, I find only a small percentage to have any real issues. Most work out great
Bought 4-5 cheap carbs on eBay. No problems.
Would have got a new carburator.
