- Diagnosing and Fixing a Chainsaw that will not start.
In this video I will walk you thru the step by step process you would take to diagnose why your chainsaw will not start so you can repair the problem. This particular chain saw was taken to a small engine repair shop and the mechanic was unable to get it running. I told him I would look at it for him and see if I could find something he may have missed. I was able to get this chainsaw running. You will see the steps I took to check what the problem could have been and how I fixed it. I returned it to him so he could sharpen the chain and install the brake (which he kept at his shop).
You will also learn how to diagnose, disassemble, clean and reassemble a 2 cycle engine carburetor. This is the most common reason 2-stroke engines stop running (especially ones that are not frequently used). You would use this same process in rebuilding your carburetor... just replace the parts shown in this video that come in the kit for your carburetor. Many homeowners throw good equipment away because of a clogged carburetor when it is a fairly simple fix.
Today's fuel quality is poor and if left in the carburetor over a period of time it will eventually clog the small ports in the 2 cycle carburetor.
Go with me through this step by step carburetor cleaning process and you will be on your way to using your weed trimmer, blower, hedge trimmer, chainsaw and other equipment, in not time!

I took the same saw to a repair shop a few years ago and they told me that I needed a new carb, $85 bucks later I was good for a while. But I didn't realize that the alcohol in gas will turn to varnish if you don't use it up. I am determined to fix this problem this time, as I also did with my lawn mower twice. When you're done playing, replace the diaphragm. It's ALWAYS the diaphragm. Change the diaphragm once a year regardless If you use the saw or not. The part cost less than $1.

Just a tip....While you have the carb apart, hold the diaphragm up to a bright light and see if it has a hole or a crack in it.

@@newt66c33from what I see on other repair videos you specifically don't want it to be clicking in and out. That means it is stiff and needs replaced.
@@newt66c33100% wrong! If it clicks, it’s past toast. Bin it. They should be very soft and supple. As soon as they start to stiffen; they should be replaced.

Great video, I watched your carb cleaning portion and cleaned my carb, put back together, also cleaned my spark plug, adjusted the spark plug screws and running like a champ again, hadn’t used it in about two years, cut down a tree that was next to the house after finished it
Way to go... and if you don't use it much be sure to drain fuel out of gas tank and run it out of Carb and she should start right up when you are needing to use it.
Also doesn't hurt to pour a little 2 cycle oil in the fuel tank and pull the start cord to get a little in the carb to keep it nice while in storage.
My Husqvarna 240 lost spark so I replaced the coil and plug. It still didn't start and started dumping fuel out the exhaust. I installed a new carb, filter and lines and set the H & L screws out 1 1/2 turns. Now I have fuel and spark and it still won't start.
Thanks for the best most informative video. My 236 runs but won't keep running. The fuel is old but ethanol free. I think the 2stroke that was pre mixed with the petrol has gummed up the carb. I liked the way you didn't skip bits like the throttle rod not being connected. Its an easy mistake that a layman might miss. Thank you

That right there was my Stihl HS45. I have one that works like a charm, then a newer one that wouldn’t start no matter what I replaced.
I succumbed and brought it to a small-engine repair place. He said it was a malformation in one of my gaskets.
I’ll let you know if that truly solves the issue.

I had that exact saw. Husky homeowner/ Poulan saw. Made it 2 months. Been using the Stihl ms170 for 9 years.

Dump old gas and replace with fresh. Add a little Seafoam engine treatment to the fresh gas+oil, cycle primer bulb 5 times, pull cord 5 times with choke on, then let sit for 24 hrs and soak. Next day try to start again. Fixes itself 8/10 times in my experience if the diaphragm and fuel lines are good with no saw breakdown.

Purge bulb.....they don't have primers cuz they have a choke.

Great video. It revealed many mysteries. It also confirmed my thankfully infrequent response to starting troubles ... take the bloody thing to a good small engine mechanic and let them sort it out. That might have taken you about 30 minutes. It would have taken me a couple of hours and I doubt that I could have put the thing back together again even if I figured out how to take it apart. I have a Husqvarna Rancher 455 sitting on storage for about 10 years. I have not tried to start but I´m sure it won´t . I do not have your skills to do this procedure and will have to replace the carburetor (Amazon $27) if it needs maintenance. Thanks for the nice class.

Did you notice about 9:44 when blowing air through the one part of the carburetor and a little black speck suddenly appears on the cloth below almost hidden by the index finger. I wonder if that was a clog and was the problem?

My 142 e - series will start with starting fluid but won't stay running. Cleaned the carb, which didn't look bad. As you've stated, this has to be something easy that I'm overlooking. I haven't removed the fuel hose yet, but there's definitely gas in it. I have air and spark, so it has to be a fuel issue. Thanx for the video.
Be careful not to run it on ether… I just use that as a test. There is no lubrication in the ether which can burn up your piston and cylinder wall.
Check that there is no water in your gas and also that your fuel filter is not clogged

Note i did not finish watching the video. To see what the carbs problem was.
But thought id mention a trick everyone can try as soon as one doesn't want to stay running or even doesn't run top notch.
My husky did it yesterday. First start of the season was a no go. Readjust and i was off and cutting.
My Stihl trimmer does it to me atleast twice a year or more.
All you gotta do is run the needles down gently seated and usually the setting is 1 and 1/4 turns out on both high and low needles. It should start then. Then adjust from there. Lots of videos on that.
But anywho. It must be trash or varnish builds under the needle and seat and running it in clears it. Its worked more then 30 or.40 times in my life. If you took it to a shop they will tear it down and sell you a rebuild job every time. Um very seldom needed. Not on old stuff anyway. Most of this new stuff you either cant adjust or need a special splined tool for the job. They cant sell you.
But i ordered a full set yesterday for my stepfathers polan and lord noes what else. New Junk.
Look for needles you can adjust. Or dont buy it. Or you can simple toss the carb and buy a new chinese one for around 15 bucks. Your call.
Note echo blower a couple years ago i bought new had no screws. Ran to rich, no power so i returned it i was so mad.
I heard from my local shop Most or them came tuned to lean and burnt up.
Check your local pawn shops for the older stuff while you can still get it. Then learn to work on it. Tons of videos!
It’s also a good idea to check the spark arrestor to make sure it hasn’t become gummed up. A little mineral spirits and gentle application of heat with a small propane/mapp torch will clean it right up.
Same experience. Once you learn how to adjust the high/low you’re good to go more often than not.
thew splined tools avail from wish china 5 bucks the set landed. Another tip is screw idle well in so enigne will run as u tune. ie low jet adjust till it starts responding freely then back idle screw off. especially handy if youve pull jets out for cleaning. i run the carbs thru a small ultrasonic cleaner its amazing the crap petrol leaves behind in the galleries of carbs.
Watching from country (Botswana ) i feel very delighted to watch this video, i just bought brand new chain saw but it worked well actual its 2 months kicking well but now its start and switching its self off its not catching up to a good start...help please i don't know what to do but i got lot of farm jobs i have to do?
It is not clear what your question is. Are you saying that it will start but then when it gets hot it will shut off and then you can’t start it? If that is the case it could be that the ignition coil is bad.
So you didn't need to change the fuel filter or tune it up afterwards? Just wondering.

Very good checking for the problem. I have done exactly what you have done, but it will not start unless ether added, then will run fairly smoothly for as long as it can. Unfortunately when it has been stopped, and you try to start it, it just will not start, wants to but just won’t, have you any ideas.?
You clearly have a fuel delivery problem. Start simple like checking for a clogged fuel filter, clogged air filter, bad fuel line etc. If your brand of saw has a vent line for the fuel tank make sure it is not plugged. If the problem is not something simple then you will have to remove the carb and clean/rebuild it or replace it.
Let us know what you find out.
Also, be careful not to spray too much ether in it (I only did that little test to verify the problem)... the engine is lubricated by the 2 cycle oil in the fuel and that keeps the piston and cylinder wall from getting scored (ruined). Ether has no lubricating properties in it.
My experience also is the stone filters break down & causes the grit you see in the carburetor. Switch to a paper filter & this will prevent the trash in the carb. My number 1 tip to all.
I got a little Husqy that came with the SxS I bought, it has old gelled up gas in it so I'll use your video as a guide.

Your fuel lines and primer bulb are probably not clogged. I would make sure the fuel filter and carb are not all gummed up though.

i have a central park chainsaw but the filter tube from benzine filter broke off, how can i fix it ? can i open the fuel tank ? to put a new tube on it ?
Great Video, have a Rancher 450 that probably has same problem, hasn't been run in a couple years and assume it's all gummed up.
It doesn't take much to clog those tiny ports on those carburetors. In the future... if you drain the fuel and run it out of the carb before you store it for a month or longer you will save yourself from having to do this. Thanks for watching

i use the premixed gas and have not had any problem yes more expensive but when you are at the hunting lease hundred miles from everywhere sure is nice to pull 2 times for start
starter fluid is very hard on small engines, no lubrication in ether/starter fluid, I would start with checking for spark and fresh fuel, then going to the fuel line and filter, starter fluid is best used for spud guns.

Funny I have a home lite xl and a home lite super 2. Got the xL to run first pull yet the super 2 for some reason when you pull it if it does start it runs extremely high rpm smokes out the muffler then kills. After dying it will leak fuel out of the exhaust and sometimes make a slurping sound as if it’s trying to suck the fuel through an extremely small straw w a vacuum. Iv put a little sea foam in there adjusted my carburetor screws of course. Will try it again here shortly

You should consider buying a carb. They are often cheaper than a rebuild kit. It was the case for my Husqvarna 445e.
No need to buy a carb or gasket set
Very seldom will need to need to replace a gasket
Even if you tear one and it’s all still there it will still seal ok
I’ve even made gaskets from cardboard boxes when working really old engines
Just make sure the keys are cleared all you need is cleaner of any band
Acid brush
A wire small enought to crear the jet
Shop towels to dry the cleaning Fluid

Great video my saw is a husky 257 there are two small adjustment screws on the left side of the saw one marked L and H how do you adjust them or should you?
If your saw is running well leave them alone. If your carburetor needs adjustment at some point in time you can adjust them. The L is for adjusting the low side (idle mixture) and the H is for the (High mixture). You want to be careful when adjusting the high side. You want it running a little rich and not perfectly smooth. Watch a video on that before you adjust... and a chainsaw is a little different than other 2 cycle engine carburetor adjustments (ie a weed eater... etc.).

I have 2 husky saws. A 440 & 435. Both stopped running. Got fresh gas. The newer 435 now runs. 440 doesn't. It has spark. It won't pop even if I spray starter fluid in the spark plug hole. (the 435 was the same) I'm getting ready to take the carb off and clean it but I know it's getting gas because when I take the plug out it is wet. However, cleaning the carb worked on my log splitter and on my leaf blower so maybe it will work on the chainsaw.
If the metering diaphragm is stiff (like a potato chip), it could be letting in too much gas. The plug will be wet but it won't start. Also the reed diaphragm should be fairly flat with no warps or crinkles.
Sounds like a challenge… I had one engine that was similar to what you are describing and found that the plug wire had a short in it. It would spark when I took it out but when it was installed there was a short And no spark…It only would spark when the wire was bent a certain way

I just got a new Mark II 16 inch only 165.00 . Somebody did a return . Ran for a while then died will not start . Spray starting fluid into spark plug no spark no kick . I disconnected wire to shut off nothing so I say its a defect coil. What you think ? Did you screw out low and high adjustment screws also ? Factory set I noticed so I leave them alone.
Sorry you are having trouble. It takes fuel and spark for your engine to run. If your coil is bad you should notice a weak spark, intermittent or no spark typically... or when they are going bad the engine can sometimes run but quit when it gets warm. It is hard to say from here what your problem might be but when you are diagnosing keep in mind those 2 simple things... Have to have spark and fuel... and that should help you narrow down your problem and lead you to the fix.

I have HUSQVARNA 365 special.It is relatively new.On the decompression valve and under have little oil and carbon. Anyway,It seems that chainsaw work normal and the compression is good... I don't use decompression valve for starting..Sorry for my bad english.Thanks for your answer...

When you spray starting fluid in the carb you need to hold the throttle wide open so the fluid goes to the cylinder

doesn't take much at all to clog the little ports on these carbs and even with those filters they still clog. Worst thing is leaving unleaded gas in the carb.
filter in carb also helps too break the fuel stream into more particle size droplets before entering manifold
Hi Folks, don't forget to add gas stabilizer when storing your machine, it is often the source of problems. Also use the best gas you can find, you'll be glad you did. Those small engines are fairly simple to fix, just practice preventive mechanical measures and you will avoid most common issues.
Most 2 stroke oils have stabilizers in them already! At least the higher grade ones do
DO NOT store gas in any machine over winter! Run it dry, buy fresh non-ethanol gas when ready to use again-
Totall TRUTH. I’d rather do a little preventative action that not and deal with an issue that didn’t need to become a problem.
I make this same mistake almost every year, I plan on taking it out one last time before the snow falls but never get to it. Come spring I curse myself every time. For years, before I knew this truth, I had to take my saw in for repair every spring. "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result."
Husqvarna gas has Stabilizer in it by default & can sit for up to 2 years without issue. Cost more but you can relax when stored during winter.

Excellent video. did not need to watch it 4 times to get it. lol During the winter I started it every few weeks but gummed up anyway. gas stabalizer mentioned can stay in afterward or must be flushed? someone told me to empty gas after every use.
Best advice is to empty the tank and run the fuel out of the carburetor if it will not be used for a while...

I got a problem that it won't start but no spark. Replaced the plug, ignition module and adjusted the gap on the plug and ignition module. Checked the resistance thru the coil and is 1.5 k on both the old and new modules. Saw was running the day before.
If you don’t have spark then you have an electrical problem. It’s hard to say without looking at it but… Check your plug, check your coil, check your kill wire, also look for A short on one of your wires. Also make sure the magnet on the flywheel is not gummed up. I know you said you’ve done some of these things but go over it again to make sure. Also disconnect your kill wire from the switch and see if you get spark.

@@helpinguonline Thanks for the reply. Yes I have done all the things you have stated but went a little further. I have ohmed out the coil and I have no open coil from the ground frame of the coil to the high voltage spark plug side. The other side of the coil is also not open that goes to the cut off switch. After putting the coil back on I also made sure I had a good ground from the cylinder to the coil ground thinking maybe it was floating.
The magnet on the flywheel pulls the screw drive in with no problem.
This is a Husqvarna 350. I have been over all the ignition problems I find
but no one give any measurements on coil ohm. The one I have is 1500 on spark plug to coil ground and 141 ohms from ground to stop pin which is the one to shut off the saw.
The new coil has the same ohms but for the ground to stop pin and it is 2000 ohms. It does the same thing as the other coil. I got spark testers that i ma using but after 3 days on this thing I about to give up and junk it.

do you have spark when tested?... how is the compression?... did you adjust the hi or low fuel mixture screws when you cleaned the carburetor?... if so set them at 1-1/2 turns out from all the way in and start from there, then do final adjustment if you get it running. If you have had the chainsaw for a while you may want to check the spark arrestor and make sure it is not clogged.
Hard to say what your problem might be without being there.

You did not mention air fuel screws or adjustments? After disassembling is their a manufacture dependent or general default?
It is a good idea to remove the screws and spray carb cleaner through the ports. It is also a good idea to turn the screws in (before you remove them) and count how many turns it takes to bottom out so you know where they were set. Should be close to 1-1/2 turns clockwise.
If you don't know where they were set I always turn them in till they bottom out ... then out 1-1/2 turns as a starting point to do final adjustments for the carb.

while your at it remove the blocked muffler spark arrestor and open low jet just a smidge as its not revving quite right.
In the gas compartment is the fuel line. Is it fixed to a certain point or just loose. Mine caught on the cap, and moved, and I'm not sure about this issue. Can't find any info on it either.
They're always loose. The fuel filter on the end of it is weighted so it will drop to the bottom of the tank regardless of how you hold the saw.

You can do it!... and always remember to empty the fuel out of the tank and run it out of the carburetor if you are not going to use it for a while... will save lots of headaches...
i have H 240 also. Never use ethanol gas and if it wont start open the gas cap then retighten. This Chainsaw design gets vapor locked easily.
I have a makita saw that’s hard to start.same principle applies here. Thanks for the video

You can buy carburetor adjustment tool sets for $10-$15 online. You will get a variety of them to adjust many different types of carburetors
i have a spear and Jackson and mine cut out yesterday and now i cant get it started again i brought it in last night to take chain and head off to clean it all but today still doesn't run got plenty of oil in it and gas still nothing took spark plug out gave it a clean still didn't work swapped spark plugs with another still didn't work i now at a hmmmmm where is it what's wrong now since i watched yours maybe it needs a little ethaline in the cylinder to get it going then the cabrito need cleaned so will try that at weekend

The yellow gas line in the 240 has an inner line that can plug the fuel line when putting the filter in

Btw, I strongly discourage blowing compressed air through ports and holes in the carburetor. There are tiny check valves and diaphragms in there that you’ll destroy if you use an air compressor on them.
