I've always wanted to see Rajini (or even Kamal) in a post-apocalyptic, Book of Eli kinda movie. The production will cost big, yes. But to witness Rajini as an aged bounty hunter trying to survive in the ruins of Earth would be so damn cool.
I will gladly accept the review where you say Darbar is loosely written and doesn't come together all along, mainly towards the end.
But very surprising that BR finds Sarkar or Bigil like movies sensible, dafaq bro?
As long as we are not discerning and satisfied easily then we are never going to get another baasha or annamalai, if something is lesser than what you have earlier received, always criticize so that quality will improve
It's all the expectations one sets, bro. He would have expected cringe max from Sarkar or Atlee's Bigil and ended up feeling different. Whereas he himself said he expected more out of Kaithi just cuz Lokesh did something like Maanagaram.
That's also the reason he liked Viswasam, it came after Vivegam.
Also he doesn't watch trailers and go to films :P
This guy didn't appreciate when rajni took the backseat for content driven properly packed scripts like kaala, kabali and 2.0. And when rajni decides to step back to his masala niche like Darbar, he shits on it as well.
My problem is the hypocrism involved in his reviews of mass films.
I'm a fan of superstar and Darbar didn't work for me, this script and direction looked obsolete to me.
Although the first half looked interesting and started to set a premise,the second half was terrible and ineffective. I can't understand how he has different standpoints on simple mass films like this and a pseudo-feminist cringefest movies like Bigil or Factually incorrect Sarkar that speaks nothing but nonsense throughout. -_-

I really liked the film ,it was way more greater than rajini' s previous films ,linga would have been a greater film if it was fully about constructing a dam the flashback scenes are good ,in kabali I really disappointed ,I liked the intro scene thats it .wheareas in kaala it was not as bad as kabali it was good I liked the scene where rajini was drunk and repeating the same question to the minister " aama yaar ivaru" and the " vaadi en thangai silai" song was good .in 2.0 I liked the film but I can't see it as a rajini film it is Shankar's film.petta didnt impressed me .but in darbar you can feel the rajini fire ,from the very first scene ,yogi- rajini comedy worked well ,the love portions are way more convincing than the previous films,father - daughter sentiment scenes are good ,Nivetha 's performance added a hype to the revenge saga ,bgm was lit great work ,rajini looked very young,energetic,powerful ,the main flaws are action sequence ,villain character was not designed properly but it was a good entertaing movie and treat for thalaivar fans
White Collars You were spot on about Linga.. I often watch just the one hour flashback sequence of Raja Lingeswaran and I enjoy it better than any other Rajini movie, especially the stylish scenes like ‘I haven’t failed, I have just postponed my success’, the patriotic Indiane vaa, the emotional Unmai Orunaal Vellum and the last scene as a cook.. It was an under appreciated masterpiece ruined by the grandson character..

If you look at the action sequence in Kaithi, it was not only the fights..The situation in which the hero fights,, there is a absolute tension and extreme pressure under which the hero fights..So the action sequence gets more gritter!! I think you can't compare a fine film like Kaithi with other films that got released recently..
The review is given only from your perspective. For me I liked dharbar paying 150 rupees and I had good time pass. I thing you guys can only review sherlock Homes. You can digest bigil and yes we can digest you

That's the definition of a review. It's his perspective. That's the whole point. There is no objective "truth" of whether a movie is good or bad. It's up to each person whether they like it or not.

I did not expect this br sir yes the movie was not perfect but I went to watch a superstar movie and I got it the background score especially the station fight scene 🔥 am happy that song was sang by a transgender (கண்ணலே திமிரு)
That was awesome 🖤 the villain was great at the end of the this is the type of movies that are tailor made for festival releases
I love Sarkar but for me darbar is way more enjoyable because of the rajini factor and anirudh 🖤

The problem is, it is not surprising that br didn't like darbar, he is a harsh critic. But the fact that he loved bigil and sarkar, really questions what he looks for in the movies.
I think he loves movies which is a female centric or women role has more impact on the movie.

He looks out for strong Female characters or female factors, I guess. And come on, he's one of the finest critics in this country. If he were biased, he wouldn't have picked a National Award.

There are some teachers who gives mark for what you have written and then there are teachers who gives complete 5 marks at the start and then reduces the marks based on your mistakes. As a die-hard thalaivar fan Darbar didn't work for me. Thalaivar means style.. Age is not a matter, love his Petta, Kabali and Kaala.. Only when people take out "mass" and action from Thalaivar, we can see more comedy, more style, more acting, more Thillu Mullu, More Netrikkan and More Mullum Malarum..

Loved your point about action scenes lacking innovation. This is a general problem in Tamil and Telugu cinema. SPYder and Asuran were above average in this regard.

What really upsets me is how Thalaivar, at the age of 70, still puts soooo much energy and pizzazz into his performance and this JUST ISN''T matched by the script, the direction or the music. It is the damn Director's responsibility to deliver a HIT screenplay to Thalaivar and AR Murugadoss failed miserably in doing that.
What a disappointment...No wonder Thalaivar released updates of his next movie before Darbar even released.
And Anirudh was horrible....there was a time when a Rajini movie had all hit songs....anyone remember Chandramukhi,Sivaji?????

Man i think u two got the poorest of taste in songs... The album of Darbar is really exception lly well... And the RR he has has done has taken the movie into a next zone.. i feel that other songs( except dum dum) is more good than chumma kizhi ( which itself is one of the best!)

Anirudh's BGM was the major aspect which carried the whole film, that train scene would not have worked without kannula thimiru
can you do a review on This year telugu sankranthi releases(Ala vaikuntapuram lo, sarileru nekevaru, etc), so that it will be a good perspective change for us...

A better example for an One vs many fight is the knife fight from John Wick 3. The kill Bill partly works because it is set in an over the top world as opposed to JW3.
i watched Darbar in telugu and enjoyed the movie and BGM but the songs didn't sound good.i thought it might be a dubbing issue, maybe the lyrics didn't translate well into telugu, did you enjoy Songs in Tamil?

But for ADMK goondas destroying the theatres , sarkar would have been an absolute flop , it was on the 3rd day eveing show that I was coming via kasi theatre when these goondas were tearing the banners , there was hardly 40 two wheelers in the theatre ........

10:03 Did people forget about Nana Patekar in Kaala? It was a brilliantly developed villain with great symbolism and foil to Rajini’s character. Nawazuddin Siddiqui was also great in Petta. BR seems to be flipping sides whenever reviewing Rajini films.
The expectations hit the roof for a Rajni film. He also said that he would like to see Rajni play his age. Maybe he forgot Kabali and Kaala!
Request : Can you please ask a actor like Thalapathy Thalaivar thalaivar directly why do ask so much money as salary .... I m sure even their Grandchildren have enough by now... It is affecting the movie ... We can't say they don't care abt the movie or audience. Because they work hard for the movie and it seen on screen ... Among the mass heroes I probably can only enjoy Rajini movies in that genre. I'm just looking for an entertaining Rajini experience. I really enjoyed padyappa, baasha, petta etc. Probably as long as it's not boring like Lingaa, Baaba I have no issues with illogical storylines. I can't tolerate Vijay movies for example because it has the same illogical storylines but I don't have the fan feeling I have for Rajini. I've been watching his movies since I was a kid and part of me is reliving the magic I felt as a kid on seeing him on big screens.
All points BR raised are valid though .. Rajini should hopefully get a good commercial script. As fans it will help us enjoy the Rajini experience even more.
Murugadoss is certainly loosing the touch. He is deliberately becoming a more MASAALA DIRECTOR LIKE TELUGU CINEMA, I just don't know why.
The intelligence and Style from THUPPAKI is missing. KATHTHI was excellent as a masala film too but it's writing and standards were way high. In DARBAR I was expecting a MISSION IMPOSSIBLE type flick , Atleast like an ageing JOHN WICK.
I just wish, he comes back to do movies like THUPPAKI & KATHTHI

The ground beneath FC south's universe caved in when BR was dancing over a movie like Action and not
condemn/ banish it for what it was. Boss, Rajinikanth played the father of a daughter whos in the marriageable age in Darbar. In Kaala too he aged perfectly. If this man doesnt look his age despite being 70 then it is not his fault at all. (Especially that screen presence. Hes a natural.) Now directors like ARM are vain and escapists they sign up the big stars and put their feet up saying half my job is done. Now Ill bring in a few plot points and mount it big(with absolute disregard to whether that plot point is even needed like that bounty on cops idea, even the revelation of the suspense of Valli's death)and voila you have a blockbuster. Sunil shetty is the most wooden faced actor you can think of and here he is opposite Rajinikanth atleast he didnt scream his lungs out nor indulge in theatrics (thanks to small mercies) which a Pasupathy would have done coz hes a kind of actor who needs the backing of a solid script to shine which is not there in Darbar. Why Hollywood always, (each to his own I agree)why not Tiger shrof' s intro fight in War very very plausible.
ARM redeemed himself a bit through fleshing out Valli and casting Nivetha Thomas in it. Rajinikanth' s acting gets tempered whenever hes shared screen with actors who understand the character and plays it just so right. No theatrics No underwhelming subtlety either. Just play it to the expected meter. Kudos to her performance her pain was so real. Interesting that you bring in Cheeni kum while being covertly judgemental about Nayanthara playing the FL opposite Rajinikanth. Do not rob the agency of a woman. Tabu's character is never in doubt about her choice nor does she feel apologetic about it (played brilliantly by paresh Rawal) she just wants some ideas to bring her stubborn dad around.
It is just that in Darbar's romance neither the visuals nor the conversations were mature enough to convey that these are two mutually interested and willing adults trying to take a chance with the other.
Rajni finding who Suniel Shetty is way after we know was a big bore. If it was revealed to us the same time he finds out, it would have had a way bigger impact. By the time he figures it out, we lose interest in the narrative. The story had potential, but the screenplay was all over the place. And great point about having better villain characters. If the villain seems invincible, the satisfaction of him being defeated is more.
It would be great to see Rajni in a Cheeni Kum kind of movie!

4:15 there is nothing new in nivedha's death. Darbar is a "templated revenge" movie just as you mentioned about pattas. So when dealing with some predictable subject writers usually reveal the plot pretty soon. I dont know why a reviewer like you couldn't understand it.

As a kid, I hated those Rajni movies that were like mullum malarum, 6il irunthu aruvuthu varai, Engeyo Ketta Kural etc.,...They were not fun and most kids loved him to be in scripts that had commercial elements in them.
One thing is pretty clear - your reviews and opinion doesn't even come close to common man's sensibilities. Reviewers like you think you have high IQ and talk only to certain set of audience know them all kind of attitude. You are completely out of touch..
