As an artist and an appreciater of Indian Cinema, I believe Raavanan can be called "perfect cinema". There are only a few movies like that which applies to ALL senses, and leaves us spellbound with its sheer holistic effect of emotional-impact for days.
I've noticed that most movies of this calibre are underrated, yet appreciated by true artisans around the world.

I watched the movie two times on big screen for two reasons Vikram and Cinematography. Even i watch it today for the same reasons. Mani sir just wanted to show Ramayan in a opposite way making ravan as hero. Still he kept Hanuman character as same. Not only in first scene, Post interval Karthik goes to Ravanan place and asks Ragini "Come with me I can take you on My shoulders and save you" which is the same line from Ramayan. Its so obvious that what we are seeing on screen is ramayan in other perspective. The scene where Raagini speaks to god near the idol is clear that she has feeling on veera which is very hard to digest. If the same story made by other director for sure no body would care about this.

I felt that Tamil Raavanan is a much better version as it is very self explanatory compared to Hindi Raavan. Right from the first scene of Vikram with abducted Aishwarya on the boat, the Tamil version beautifully unfolds the meaning of every single action in the movie.

I am an author of a book on international movies. And, "Ravanan" is one of my all time favorite films because an elusive twist to the tale is shown in the movie in the last scene, which kind of indicates, Ram and Ravanan are doing this as a team. It is told in a very subtle manner that it is almost unnoticeable. There are too many details that every time you watch it, a new layer is found. Speaking of Maniratnam, this was a big leap from the forgettable "Guru"!

    • @vallashok

@@VRdoingeverything when you write a book obviously people will criticize. Guru was, in Netflix terms "forceful", whereas, Ravanan was like a stream of river, in Netflix terms "hidden gem". A lot of the story unravels in the song lyrics!

Raavanan is a really well made film. Just because Ragini was a good person, doesn’t mean that Dev is supposed to be good too. Moreover he harassed Veera’s sister. Veera despite being portrayed in a negative shade, gets his due when the intentions of his actions are justified. So now who is Raavanan? Veera or Dev?

Even in the scenes in the flashback has sunlight and no rain because veera is happy before. But after the death of Priyamani onwards you see see all the scenes in either mosit or rain reflection how sad veera turned out.

I feel with kaatru veliyidai people were unable to accept a flawed character, especially with someone like Karthi portraying it. It is ok if he was in prison in a movie like kaithi as long as he has a heart of gold but he can't be a nice guy with flaws. Also, the flaw being toxic masculinity, maybe a lot of people don't see it is a big issue. They may have even been okay with him behaving that way. And would have felt what is Aditi Rao's character's dilemma even? Isn't she supposed to be okay with him, he loves her so much.
I am making a generalization with respect to the majority of the audience who may not really see the main conflict of the film as a problem.

It's true, CCV was heartbreaking, I was waiting for a while after the movie started feel that this is Mani Ratnam's movie, but in this film it took a while. May be I didn't like it because I was not used to this kind of movie from Mani sir. There is always a flow in MR movie when it starts, even the starting dialogues matters till the last frame of the movie, eg take Dilse the starting when Sharukh khan's car is stopped and investigated for any bomb and Sharukh's reply for that comes at the end when Manisha has bomb hidden inside her clothes. In CCV the flow was missing, and even the cuts were very quick, there would be always a time given in MR movie for the emotion to grow, MR uses songs for us to grow the emotion and then the movie takes off again, in OKK this part was handled along with a story., I couldn't feel any emotion in CCV. Kaatru veliyidai, as you said it was disappointing me because Karthick's character was just irritating and disturbing me to sit peacefully at my seat, I was most of the using my phone, because I couldn't take it, and in a scene where Karthick takes Aditi to his home first time, I felt that dialogues were forced, I was like "sir not the same style of dialogues again". But on top of all these what amazes me is that how this man is ruling the industry and how every movie being studied and people aspiring to make films are learning so much from his works. Raavanan, apart from everything, I always feel that if I had atleast got a chance to serve tea to everyone there at sets, it would have been my life best time. I couldn't imagine how adventurous and exciting that place would have too shoot and of course when your far away master is nearby.

What my constant complaint, has been about Mani Ratnam's cinemas, is he creates beautiful cinematic universe, a unique style of story telling, representing his actors in a never before or after way, extracting the best out of them with some very interesting characters, but (i) with some other very half heartedly written characters, (ii)leaving everything in a shallow way somehow!! Ravaanan( the Tamil version) has been the MR movie probably, I liked most, among those, I watched. Because it had a very very interesting story line, set in an even more intriguing set up/ situation. And as #AskBR has kind of echoed my feelings about Dev Prakash Subramaniyam( Dev Pratap Sharma in Hindi), I honestly think this character is not only 'underwritten', both the male leads, so brilliantly played by their respective actors, are treated very unfairly! There are at least, 3 instances in the film where Ragini strongly expresses her confidence on Dev. But the story has not provided a single instance to establish this trust of Ragini. Why she, a quite confident and reasonable person otherwise, think Dev a God like human being, is not answered once! Neither Dev was given any positive side in him. On the other hand, #AskBR so beautifully discussed about the character of Veera ( Beera 'Munda' in Hindi version) as a brave, justified warrior of the 'voiceless'.However his presence followed in the story frame as if he is a mere avenger, like a Sunny Deol starrer Dacait(87) or Sunil Shetty's Vinashak(98) reloaded ! I mean, how vast were the possibilities to explore the world of Veera- from clas struggle to caste hierarchy! MR has not added one small incident to establish who Veera is or what Veera actually represents, except uttering some dialogues of characters throughput the Movie!!

I noticed you kept saying that Dev is focussed on his mission, that he's mission-centric etc.. I felt this was more than a mission to him. When he was first transferred to this district, it was a mission for him to get Veera, just like any other assignments he has had in the past. But once Veera kidnapped his wife, it became personal (unintended reference to Michael Corleone). And he was obsessed with Veera, he wanted revenge. Of course he missed his wife and he wanted to get her back. But his desperation to kill Veera by all means superseded all other wants. We don't see any instance of Ragini or his junior cops fearing or alluding to a possibly psychotic version of Dev from past events that they were aware of, meaning this single act of Veera has spurred and triggered an unknown crazy side to Dev, and so going after Veera now is not just a mission to him. I hope that makes sense.
But I loved the analysis, its interesting how even after 10 years, the film is still fresh and there's so much to discuss and dissect. And I also agree that the super beautiful visuals did not go well with the dark mood of the film.

But here the movie played very safe even though there was a scope to analyse & make statement on the changing moral values (not necessarily bad). Like BR said, I couldn't connect with characters, language, geographical milieu, costumes and anything... Cinematography was too good. First or all it's not alternative view of Ramayanam. It's a fictional take based on the characterizations of Ramayana. Yet, there are stark differences in characterizations too. It's about a man who takes revenge on what happened to his sister. That's it. That's the story. Nothing to do with epic Ramayanam.

9:50, I feel prithviraj is like a guy who just have the face of government/ police/ power centre/ loyal to institution...he didn't talk anything about rape, because eventhough the women was abused I feel he would still support police force.

I believe Mani hasn't devoted a lot of screen time for Ram as his character already has been etched in everyones mind. Ram got undue advantage to begin with. The challenge for Mani was to convince the audience to see Raavanan otherwise. In that sense we are in the shoes of 'Sita'. He only had to 'fill in the gaps' for audience to get an alternative perspective of the pure soul we all thought he was. i.e., We only get to see Ram and Raavanan from the perspective of 'Sita' as it applies to her and how it provokes the change in her thereby empathizing with Raavanan. If we don't shed tears for Vikram then the movie did not work even if we don't fully empathize or understand how dark Pritviraj really was. That is both a positive and negative.
I wonder if censor board would ve allowed any more negative caricature of 'Ram' than we get to see .
This movie deserved the same or even more adulation than PS-1. I feel the biggest fail of this movie was in its dialogue writing and shoddy editing. When I walked out of PS-1 I was so proud just like how I felt coming out of Raavan on the theaters many many years ago. But that pride was doused immediately knowing that it didnt receive that sort of recognition.
Vikram was stellar in Raavanan - just spellbindingly subtle and touching performance.

As the title suggest ..It all about Ravanan ..but from whose perspective ...Its through Ragini ( Sita )..How her perspective changes from start to finish...I think Mani sir is trying to break the myth of individual perception/vision. Remember Ravanan is a god figure in lanka till date...Its the version of Sita's Ramayana & not Valmiki's.

As beautiful thalapathy is the climax kind of let me down. Mani sir made some compromise to make rajini fans happy..as beautiful ravanan was I agree the pritwiraj character was uncharacteristic..

It’s sad no one asked about the deleted scenes..the scene where Beera saves Ragini from wolves, Beera seeing Ragini’s reflection in a piece of mirror, I’m sure there was Sachin Khedekar & Sadashiv Amrapurkar as extras in Kata Kata song..there was a lot that got edited out & they never released the deleted scenes...was really curious about all these..also I liked Kaatru velyidai more than CCV too 😀

Now look at 04:11 in the Kata Kata video, we can see both Sadashiv Amrapurkar & Sachin Khedekar in the same frame..Beera is staring super angry at Sachin Khedekar implying this marriage was sort of forced..now these are well known actors..I don’t think they were cast to appear in a frame ua-cam.com/video/bTyW9t16KQU/v-deo.html

Hey Baddy... Just to you know... I am big fan of nee thaane en pon vasantham and kaattru veliyidai... They seemed realistic to me than most of the romantic movies that are box office hits... the character arcs were well etched too... So to cut thr long story short... You are not alone ..
Anyone else who like these movies?

Leave alone the Mani Ratnamish treatment of the epic.. That one dance song of Aishwarya (with Prithivi Raj smoking beedi) , choreographed by Shobana is a class apart of its own!!!
However, one Marketing Jib of Suhasini, made by her then in one of the TV Promo, make me feel nauseating about the movie and I have not watched the movie at all after that.. Used to skip the channel if the movie was telecast.
Suhasini said in that promo (a far too enthusiastic, to somehow push the movie to ring the bells in box-office coffers) "This movie is all about the neglected / oppressed community of the society; and all those belonging to such community should come out open in support / celebrate the movie in theatres"!!! Ohwoae...such a nasty tag to the movie?

Sir kindly understand Mother Sita is much more daring and capable and qualitative..
1 Mother Sita asked tough question about Rams bow ,, will you ever use it? And few more instances 2 Ravana is nothing before mother sita s prowess.. Ravana cudnt lift SivaDanush , mother Sita wud lift like child's play 3 mother sita voluntarily submitted as a greatest virtue to all powerful/good-god Ram (AnantaKalyanaGunaSwarupa).

The story didn’t have depth and came out shallow , the dialogues were flat and the setup was artificial ... apart from some fantastic cinematography, cost of production & music there was nothing memorable . Vikram as usual did justice to his role , a tighter screenplay and detailed story could’ve helped the audience connect to the film & make it memorable
