I think Karnan is a spiritual prequel to Pariyerum Perumal due to two reasons. One, due to the fact Pariyan is also from an oppressed community that now has the means (bus) to go outside and attempt to break free of the social ills that have shackled them, which has been made possible by the uprising led by Karnan. Second, the boy who raises the horse in the film is called Perumal and he literally becomes Pariyerum Perumal when he mounts the horse towards the climax.

" Do the right thing" ends with two quotes from two people with different approaches of protest ( Malcolm X and Martin Luther).
What Martin Luther tells suits PP and a bit of Karnan. What Malcolm X's quote encapsulates Karnan's idea.

People who question violence, pls question the violence in DEVARMAGAN, KOMBAN, VIRUMANDI, DEVARATTAM, etc!!!!! These movies depict the caste dominance and nobody questions it.... If someone fightsback for the basic, moral right...all the "PEACE KEEPERS" and gandhiyan followers jump into twitter and UA-cam comments... Bcos of Devar Magan song, even today all the so called caste dominant devar community youth plays this song in functions, festivals and especially during devar jayanthi and run in streets in masses with a fire torch....and nobody questions this!!!!!

Pariyerum Perumal depicted struggle. The protagonist just tried to survive and never fought back. Karnan is redemption and fighting back against injustice. Do you think Mari Selvaraj's next one would be solution or way forward?

The interval scene easily could have ended in a high point.. but it sustains.. so as to provoke a fact that its not the right thing they are doing but a necessary thing to be done right now..cause as the scene extends the anger.. with which the scene started ends with more than an anger a mixed feeling of sorts.. and this emotional connectivity is carried thoroughly during the climax when he kills kanabiran.. he didn't intend to .but he has to.. and later when the film ends .. there is a celebration not of just joy but tears in the eyes.. from a birds eye perspective it could be seen as is this the way i should get what I want.. probably no.. but what else can I do when they deny even my basic needs of a living

    • @deexith9559

That’s indeed true. As the humiliation and frustration never ends, at one point of time everything gets vented out during the interval block. Whilst it reaches an utmost crescendo everyone among the audience ( us ) had a satisfaction that Karnan has done something bold and gutsy, but we never know that much more worse and gruesome situations awaits for the villagers later in the film. Maari Selvaraj has been very conscious in terms of building the emotions from scene to scene in an organic way rather than a dramatic style!

When I walked out of the theatre awestruck by the cinematic experience that Karnan offered on screen, many teens and Gen z said how it was boring and one time watchable or not upto sultan/master
Commercial movies also provides an escapism mode to larger audiences so having both commercial stalwart movies and art house pics is will create a healthy balance of movies. 👌🏽👍🏼

Mentioned this earlier, but Karnan was a visual masterpiece for me, but at times I felt like Mari Selvaraj was far too focused on the imagery and the story felt as if it was nothing new, the oppressed taking on the oppressor. But the fantastic characterizations made you feel for Karnan and his villagers and i bought into the story and was kept engaged! Admittedly I had extremely high expectations for Mari Selvaraj + Dhanush coming together for the film but I wasn’t quite satisfied, but that’s my fault for building up such expectations.

Yes exactly..everything about the first half was individualistically brilliant, be it the world, characters, dialogues, motifs, symbols, sound design, music, direction but story. The main driving force for any celluloid art is story, but in Karnan it just fell flat with little amount of effort into it. Personally I believe that Karnan would have been much better if it had been a 500 page novel instead of a movie, where u have unlimited time to establish characters, symbols, subplots and it wouldn't feel tedious; Ex- Oliver twist- It deals with the story of a poor orphan in search of his identity. Thr are a lot of ppl and things happening but it just goes along with the flow of the book that it just can't be overlooked. But in Karnan the two halves seemed polarized with the 1st half being an incoherent mess in terms of story, but excellent in terms of world establishment. That's why imo the movie is a bit overrated.

What i felt on Karnan character Arc, he aware everything about whats happening around him, he ie the one intimating everyone from the start of the movie like eagle scene, fighting for village sister. He has that anger on every situation and it's get high on interval. Since situation became worse now, people have to join with karnan, he has same anger from day one of movie, others are accepting it on later stage of movie.

The comparison of PP vs Karnan
and the impacts on us takes a different turn ..
We all pity for wat happened to pari in PP , even after pissing over him and several attacks on him , he still asks for treating them equally to the villan.
While Karnan village had seen generations of these oppression and they were used to it , U can't keep on oppressing them , it was a burst out which led to ask the basics and when it turned against them into a police riot , u have to kill the men who is still ordering u even at his lowest just bcoz he is superior , if u let go u won't justify the vision
    u created ..
And the impacts of PP was high while Karnan was low is bcoz , we all can relate to Pari and feel pity for him bcoz the story revolves around an individual while in Karnan it shows the entire Village's anger, we sitting in a environment which was very much far than showed could not relate to it , Only the person who knows the entire values or living in the set up cud feel it completely ... We can equate with a single individual and empathize for his pain but we can't empathize for the entire Village which was totally strange for us .
Lastly people worry about the violence in the film and asks for the same ending as in PP ..?
Well even the basic things should be asked as a request , pleading the opressors?
If it was in a attacking manner , then it will be branded as violence ... People should change their mindset

25:29 I feel like Draupadi's (Heroine's) character is necessary, as this story establishes Karnan having those things he did not have in Mahabharatham. Draupadi in this movie is shown to be so impressed by Karnan for cutting the fish into half which did not happen in Mahabharatham. Like BR said, it's Mahabharatham from the other side. That's why Draupadi loves him here and He doesn't die in the end.

  • @thirun779

Eh I just enjoy the movie as-is. Take in whatever they show without any question and try to produce a reason as to why they did it. I feel when people bring in external factors like 'star power' or 'budget' to justify something in a movie, it breaks the immersion for me because what's the fun in that?
Regarding the masala aspect of the movie, I really enjoyed it. Yes, there are cliches but they're not necessarily a terrible thing. I love the cliches because, in the movie, everything is a story, like it could be a story and the fact that the movie alludes to Mahabharata reinforces it. Why question anything from a story?
The character arc is like that of a 'hero' because Karana (from Mahabharata) is a 'hero'. Just because every movie feature 'hero' character doesn't mean it's a bad thing.
I love the atmospheric elements like birds and animals. It is slightly over done but if they are necessary, they could have used more variety of visuals instead of the same sky with the same bird so that it's not boring.
People are really caught up with minimalism and realism but I'm just sick of those movies by now. The expressionistic elements like Karupi spirit, Village deities, 'naan yaar' song and that weird electronic music in Karnan where the village spirits do western dance are right up my alley. I wish more people made movies like that in Tamil.

I think what Kannpiran represents is not exactly casteism. A little bit yes. But more towards the authority. Because in the police station scene, there was a shot to Dr. Ambedkar's photo and I felt it was a shot of portraying the highest hypocrisy. The system that was created post-independence got filled with people who believe just because they came to a certain position, them imagining that respect is something they deserve was perfectly conveyed by that shot.
I don't think there was a necessity for Kannapiran to be introduced earlier just because he had anything to do while Mari was trying to establish the universe of Karnan. And the problems Karnan encountered were something that didn't need the presence of Kannapiran. That also fits the Mahabharata narrative since until the time Arjuna was of age and he started to have bigger problems which he himself cannot solve, Krishna was never there for Pandavas.

So, the time frame where the boy could, transform to which in Parieryum Perumal.
And adding to that, there are two scenes as common on both film. Both involve the 'Thalak kattu' chairperson of the village got hitted and they were exposing the same thing in both film.
And the 'Abimanyu' character in the film is always oppress the 'Karnan' as Mahabharatha. Even though at last both unite as the Mahabharatha and 'Kanna Piraan' was the reason for the death of Duriyodana, Abimanyu in Story and mahabharatha

Master is made to be a crowd pleaser and a theater experience at best. Karnan is an evocative movie with elements that would appeal to a mainstream audience. Even a lot of people are not really celebrating the movie. Asuran somehow managed to have 2 distinct touches but worked together. When the movie is about oppression and suffering its an out and out art film. When it comes to the structure you get the same intermission block, climax fight and stuff. It's done in a more logical and realistic way but it switches modes at that point. Could see the shades of it in "Karnan" while it took some unique steps like showing metaphorical elements and surrealistic approach.

I wish he doesn't because BR is already producing major content for the channel and it becomes boring after a point to hear too much of BR's thoughts. I wish others like kairam, hriday, Hemanth do something interesting and interactive too. Which makes this channel not so boring over time.

#AskBR - (Disclaimer: Am not justifying Kannabiran but just sharing my thoughts about his rage, what could have triggered him) When he inspected the bus, he was kind of a neutral policeman who uttered the words, appo avunga bus vendam nu soldra group ila, bus venum nu soldra group. Later he comes to the village where he is provoked in two scenes as shown in the movie from my point of view. Firstly he was asking for a chair to sit and a guy in the village went to bring it but ended up helping the old lady to pee and then he came back empty handled and all these are noticed by Kannabiran himself and Secondly when he asked for names he was just heard names from Gurushetra from random people in the village, just imagine from Kannabiran point of view, he didnt hear any normal name even in a random manner so wont he have misunderstood that they are mocking him by giving false names? Radhika keeping panchapandavar names for her sons in dharmadurai was fine and acceptable as they are one family but random people in the village having their names like Dhuruyodhana, Karnan, Drowpati etc doesnt seen natural is my opinion which is why he was keep on asking in the police station what is your real name, just my understanding about his rage over them. What do you think about this view from Kannabiran perspective, ofcourse am not justifying his act but just an opinion how things triggered him initially as shown in the movie #Karnan

The film CLEARLY points out his mentality towards the people. Problem with towel on head. Problem with them touching him. Just touching his arm!!!! And oh boy. How am i gonna make you understand just because someone's a police officer they dont require immediate seating especially outside a house in an open space. Every single person there is standing. If you cant see a problem here im sorry but you're part of the problem.
I honestly have no clue how you ended up in this place to think this way. I hope you change your position.

@@sarathraj2381 I never justified his act, I am totally against such characters but mari showing this exact scene I quoted above shows things just started stacking one after the other, things I told are initial followed by things you mentioned, so what if he was given a chair, what if their names wasn't that? Mari decided it that way is what am saying, not making Kannabiran good guy here.

@@thangarajd7509 @Thangaraj D you're again missing the point of the movie. Why is he a neutral police officer when from the beginning he says "they solve problems on their own. They must belong to the same caste". From there onwards we know he is viewing things in such a bad way. He goes there and then demands a chair. And you're saying he was a neutral police officer. Just why?
You even go so far as to say the rage might be because of the names. Wtf man? He got a problem with the man wearing a towel to them standing straight in front of him. And you want to dilute it to "the names"? In the end karnan asks kannapiran what is his father's name and his name is. So kannapiran can have that name and its natural but karnan and dhuryodhanan cant?
I don't think the movie's stance is like what you're describing. He's a vile character from beginning to end. He's shown like that. To believe other way you need to cherry pick.

@@thangarajd7509 Ya I agree with u for I was baffled at the fact that Krishna was shown as a casteist, inhumane being who resorts to harming others out of intolerance... I am like what??? yes it could have been the trigger point of that guy (this something which series like Mindhunter seeks to explore and expound upon) but imo he was just portrayed as a bad guy just for the sake of it... and portraying Krishna in such a light is imo equivalent to understanding only the periphery of the great epic (possibly just 0.001% of the epic's nectar) upon which the movie is loosely based on.

Calling this a masala film be an offence to Masala film format. This is a clear middle child that can neither suffice its message nor entertains the audience on a leisure Sunday evening..
