My favourite Scarecrow design is from Season 4 of B:TAS. None of the other Scarecrow designs sold me on him being a terrifying villain, but his did in every way. The overcoat, the hat, the noose around his neck, and Jeffrey Combs' voice acting all created a truly scary character.

Jeffrey Combs AKA Herbert West was a perfect choice for playing the Scarecrow because both characters are lab-rats who create chemicals which spread terror. Different types of terror but still, you know what I mean.
Now that TAS design is the best of the 3, I feel like this guys pick was meh, nothing special and really not scary
in my opinion, arkham knight scarecrow is the best depiction of him in the arkham games, and, ironically, the dc universe! i mean, he probably ain't even got a mask on in arkham yet that depiction sold me. that is why arkham knight is #1 on my list of favorite depictions of scarecrow.

Yeah Scarecrow's the best. Thanks for giving the second TAS costume the love it deserves. A lot of people say the TNBA look is a vast improvement and I never agreed. The TNBA look is really creepy sure, but there is something so much more unsettling about the TAS one. He looks like a normal scarecrow for the most part, in TNBA he is made to be this ghastly creature while here he is just sorta a scarecrow but with minor tweaks in the face that make him horrific. Scarecrow is all about perverting things into something terrifying. In TNBA he is just plain scary, but in TAS he looks fine from afar but still just a bit....off. That captures what Crane wants to be seen as far better than a almost supernatural monster. He is raggedy and unassuming. If I saw the TNBA Scarecrow I would think it was a Halloween costume that was rather good, but if unassuming, unsettling Scarecrow started moving after me I would crap myself. There is just something more shocking about that than traditional horror like a skull face. The TAS one takes something that is meant to only scare crows and yet he makes the slightest change and is able to terrify humans. it is so much more simple and I think that is telling of who Jonathan is, he wants to be the god of fear ( best Scarecrow story btw) and to do so with such a minimal costume is all the more impressive
It also looks a bit like the Fear of Faith look which I agree is one of the best looks as well as one of the best Scarecrow stories
I also really like Asylum mainly cause the minimalism of the rest of it beyond the mask. The mask is all that makes him seem like anything other than a malnourished guy. And man what a mask! The teeth that are made of string is just brilliant. Like I don't need to say anything else, that alone makes that costume.He looks just so off, like more than ever you can tell he is human, but at the same time that very fact makes him more inhuman. He looks so weak and frail but has this freaking demonic looking face and (to quote Aunt May) THOSE HORRIBLE YELLOW EYES!!!

I never really liked it
My favorite design is Alex Ross’s. I love the idea of a mask that’s kind of blank but you can just barely make out facial features underneath, and is probably intended as a way for victims to project their fears onto it. Also, that jacket is snazzy.
I actually think Scarecrow’s current design in the Fear State event that’s almost at an end now is my favorite design. The gas mask Scarecrow mask makes his face look like a crow’s; it makes him look like a living scarecrow.
My second favorite would have to be Arkham Knight’s, something about the idea of Crane’s mask being fused/stitched onto his face permanently is just unsettling and creepy. (Which is what I thought they were going to do for a moment in that one “Titans” episode but nope they just gave him a few cuts on his face like he’s Victor Zsaz.)
Third favorite is the final design he had for Gotham in the season 4 finale & season 5; it’s pure Scarecrow.
Fourth design is the 2nd Animated Series design.
Fifth is Arkham Asylum design.
Sixth is Scarecrow’s first design in Gotham for his first two episodes in season 4.
Seventh is his 2nd design for the rest of Gotham season 4 until the finale; it looks like Arkham Asylum’s design in live action.
Eighth is the New Batman Adventures, I would put this higher but it hardly looks like Scarecrow, it took me a moment when I first saw him to realize it was him. Don’t get me wrong it looks cool & creepy but it just doesn’t scream Scarecrow to me.
I always loved the TAS Scarecrow, mainly because the red shirt and the hat kinda reminds me of Freddy Kruger.
Also, I cosplayed Scarecrow recently. I combined the Injustice look of the lab coat and noose, but with a Batman Begins style mask (Mainly because I do have to wear respirator mask on the job sometimes, and was reminded how awfully uncomfortable these are). Looked awesome

Got around 12 selfies/picture taken of, 1 autograph (in character, had to improvise a Scarecrow-est signature) and around 5 scared kids...

GOD, I have been DYING to see this video! I always love seeing your thoughts on artwork and designs regarding the Bat-Rogues. And Scarecrow, as you say, is one of the most interesting out there on a design front, and gives artists a lot of room to play. If I had to choose my favorites, I'm sorry to say that only TWO of your choices would be on my list. Not because the others are bad though...FAR from it! I love all of these designs, there are just three more that I love more than they.
So, what would those choices be of mine?
5. The New Batman Adventures
While the TAS design is certainly a good one, I always, personally, found it a little on the goofy side, I'm sorry to say. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the look of the character, and it's definitely an improvement from his first appearance's look... (snickers) ...But this one, I felt, just took the cake. This Scarecrow became, unless I"m much mistaken, the inspiration for a LOT of others that followed, both in the comics and in other media, and for good reason. Kept largely in shadow, with a ghoulish face and build, it was truly creepy and startling. I will love it till my dying day.
4. Arkham Asylum.
Basically, all the reasons you listed, to be honest. Nothing else to say.:P
3. Tim Sale.
Again, pretty much all the reasons you listed. I also want to add that I love the bloodshot eyes and almost claw-like hands Sale gives the Scarecrow, along with the stitches on his mask. Maybe it's just me, but I always felt Sale was trying to incorporate something...well...crow-like into the design of the character. The tatters, the dark clothes, the pointed edges, the talon-like hands, even the postures he's often depicted in (such as that glorious panel from Haunted Knight). The image of Sale's Scarecrow riding horseback, prominent in, I think, at least two of the three collaborations with Loeb he did, is also just a classic image in my mind.
2. Arkham Knight.
I know you prefer the Asylum version of the character to the Knight version, but I'm actually the opposite. To be honest, the version of the Scarecrow that appears in Arkham Knight is, without a doubt, my FAVORITE version of the character, period. And the design is a big part of that. I love how this design borrowed elements from the original game, but also added some touches of its own. The more vicious-looking syring-needle-gauntlets, for instance, or the "patched up" areas following his encounter iwth Killer Croc - the stitched up jaws, the pale, misty eyes, etc. I also really, REALLY love his coat. This Scarecrow reminds me of the Grim Reaper; he doesn't just seem to represent fear or mystery, he represents death or doom itself.
1. The Version from "Batman '66."
Now, I know what you're thinking: "What? That comic series based on the silly 60s show?" Yep. While the character, obviously, is nothing to write home about (or the story he appears in), the design is AMAZING. When I was a kid, I actually dreamed up my own designs of the Batman characters in my own mind. The look of the character in these comics is the closest I've ever seen to the kind of stuff I came up with back then. It's interesting, too, because despite being set in the universe of the 60s show, they don't go out of their way to make Scarecrow look goofy. Quite the reverse. There are several panels that actually come across as surprisingly atmospheric and creepy. They also go for a somewhat Victorian or Colonial look with the character; for example, the noose around his neck is tied up into a flimsy bow tie. That's both amusing and mildly unsettling. And, actually, that's the fun of the art in this version: they actually try their hardest to make the Scarecrow come across as threatening and unnerving, while still making sure to incorporate the necessary humor for this universe. It may not be the best Scarecrow, in my book, but it is, hands-down, my favorite Scarecrow costume and design.

The Tim Sale design is one of my favourites because it's got a strong Tim Burton vibe to it & I would love to see adaptations based off of the Loeb & Sale works with Burton as the director.
Tim sale is #2 on my favorite versions of scarecrow because he gives the readers Tim burton vibes. Arkham knight is #1 on my favorite versions of scarecrow because his look screams "I'm about to scare you to death" in my opinion.

I absolutely adore the batman the new animated series design. He doesn't really look like an actual made of straw scarecrow but he is just so creepy and badass looking and his voice is perfect. I especially love the religious preacher undertones in his costume. I feel if you combined the second version from the original animated series with this design, you'd have the ideal scarecrow look in my opinion
Scarecrow's my favorite Bat-rogue by far! My top 3 are his classic comic design (hey its iconic!), Brave and the Bold, (love his proportions and lack of eyes; something I didn't care for in TAS) and Alex Ross's design. (I love his almost-horror movie look; with his blank mask and heavy overcoat)

His arkham knight design is my personal favorite. If he had kept his cackling maniac personality he would've been my favorite depiction.
I like the new 52 design and the Arkham knight designs a lot i rlly love scarecrow designs with a good for some reason so he looks like a proper rag.

Also I do like injustice 2 scarecrow, Alex Ross, bob Kane first design on the scarecrow, Irv Novick design, the fear for sale version, Roger Robinson's design and Henry polic the second Voice of the scarecrow before they went with a non scarecrow looks.
One of my favorite Scarecrow designs is the one from The New Batman Adventures.
It's a very different Scarecrow design as he looks more like an undead mortician or priest then an actual scarecrow but it's that unique distinction and the overall creep factor with his appearance and voice that makes it so great in my opinion!

Well I like the Arkham Knight design because it's reminds me of the Horned King from Disney's Black cauldron and John Noble is fitting for the voice.

I liked them both, but game wise Asylum still kicks post croc’s ass. Even taking into account the PS exclusive batmobile races, Asylum felt like a boss just without a health bar, like Mad Hatter. Plus while Knight design looks awesome, Asylum looks more evil rather than just creepy like a corpse; I also like how his eyes are totally black, but if you zoom in you can actually see his equally black real eyes

Top 5 Mr. Freeze Costumes/Designs?
My first and favourite is Kelley jonse scarecrow costume
HEY just recently logged into a UA-cam profile again so this is my first opportunity to say that I've been enjoying your stuff a few months shy of a year now and that your posting of unique and easily digestible content is very much appreciated, as you likely have already gathered.
Anyways, there's no doubt that Scarecrow has one of the most intriguing designs of all the bat-rogues. There's just so much an artist can do with the character that there's little excuse to utterly screw it up, but unfortunately, it still happens pretty often. I swear, half the time he's either a frog or one of those cutesy scarecrows people slap in front of their houses for the fall season.
But, the ones you've displayed here are certainly the extreme exceptions. You really nailed it with sticking designs like Injustice 2, Arkham Asylum, and Eaglesham's in there. They sure get the point across.
My personal favorite design is the one from the "Dreaming He is a Butterfly" story. Wish I remembered the issue so anyone that got this far could check it out themselves, but I'm sure Google could solve that. It's not a groundbreaking Scarecrow story anyway, but I loved the little stuff on him like the feather-like fabric on his back and the Batman doll on his scythe.

The New Batman Adventures is my favorite design
#5: Crane's "normal" look reminds me of the baghead guy from "Villainous". His "monster" look is way cooler. Love that they incorporate crow feathers into his design. I kinda wished it wasn't a hallucination and it was more like he sold his soul to Neron to become a true monster.
#4: Not the biggest fan of Tim sales designs. I like catwoman and poison ivy though (green hair is better than red). Scarecrow however doesn't look impressive. All black works on Batman but not on him. And his mask makes him look like a clown.
#3: I Prefer the TNBA design. Alot of TAS's designs were perfect (i.e Two Face (love the Yin Yang Look)-Clayface-Riddler and Penguin) but characters like Scarecrow and Bane really needed a edgier boost. The revamp made Scarecrow into what i think he should best be potrayed as, a hallow emotionless entity without any sympathy for humanity. TAS made Scarecrow too human. Most fans like the interaction he has with his fellow rogues, but to me he should have been more like Freeze, distant and a true threat.
#2: Rocksteady seems to be the only people at Warner Bros. nowadays who give a sh%t about Scarecrow because they made him look like something to truely fear. Why can't we get a design like that in rebirth instead of continuing New 52's godawful design. Asylum's was visually good and i love his creepy theme song playing in the background. I Also like Knight's because to me it's what Scarecrow would look like if he was King of Arkham instead of Joker. That game proved he was a capable leader, and his presence screamed 1990 Shredder.
#1: Just as Telltale proved with Riddler that Scarecrow's not the only rogue who can pull off the hoodie look, this version proved the Master of Fear can pull off the tailcoat look just as well if not better than Joker (I personally like him in the straightjacket look from 2004 cartoon). I actually don't like the the red because brown/yellow is scarecrow's signature color, just as purple is to Catwoman-red is to Harley-and green is to Riddler. Model wise however, it really gives scarecrow that Stephen King's IT vibe, creepy and unsettling. Just imagine if something like that was staring at you from afar.
Bonus: I Personally like Gotham Knights Design. The Scarecrow over Scarecrow look is unique and never been used before. To bad they couldn't use him for the 2004 cartoon (damn Bat Embargo) because this design would have worked for that show. I mean imagine him wearing that and using his Violent Dancing Technique, it would have been so cool.

The season 4 Batman tas design was one of my favourites. It looks a lot more eerie with the noose around the neck makes him look like a corpse. The calm voice makes it scarier

Scarecrow NEEDS the hat IMO. The perfect design I think would be Arkham Knight Scarecrow with the hat.
Injustice 2's and Arkham's Scarecrow has a noose around his neck, probably inspired by the final design of Animated Series Scarecrow. But I like the second design more, it was better than his later designs.

Honestly, I preferred Scarecrow's original design in Batman: The Animated Series (From the episode "Nothing to Fear") over the one they used in subsequent episodes.
1.Arkham knight.
The reason my 1 is arkham knight is simple. I know some people will probably disagree with me, but for me, i'm a horror fanatic.. Which means I look for the terror in scarecrow's designs over the years.. But, I feel like the rest of the designs are creepy.. So they never sold me on the terror aspect.. Until I saw the Arkham knight version of my #1 bat-rogue(scarecrow).. Arkham knight, in my opinion, took the terror aspect of him, and cranked it up to 11, and made sure the now-cranked up to 11 terror aspect showed visually.
2.Tim sale.
Tim sale's version of him really reminded me of Tim burton, who made my first christmas movie fused with a Halloween movie I was introduced to when I was younger. Of course, i'm talking about the nightmare before christmas.

I like the New Batman Adventures design.
Scarecrow is one of the few archetypal villains in all of comics. His concept perfectly captures the reader in a nightmare realm where our inner fears become reality. I think my favourite scarecrow design is the classic image on the Carmine Infantino Batman cover from the 1960's. That image taps into childhood fears of evil spirits on a Halloween night. Gotham Rogues gives a great description of this brilliant cover in his top five Scarecrow covers episode. Check it out if you have not seen it.

Scarecrow from Arkham Asylum was perfect. Dino Andrade's voice is amazingly creepy and fitting. Was pretty disappointed with his redesign and voice in Arkham Knight.

I think the best design for the Scarecrow was from The New Batman Adventures. Even though I like the animated series design, it isn't as Bone-chilling as The New Batman Adventures design.
