Yeah I see what you mean. I find it interesting that people kind of heckle scarecrow for using his gas too much even though pretty much all Batman villains have a standard m.o. As much as I love the joker if you think about it like 90% of his plans mostly involve either making large groups of people laugh to death or attack Batman's loved ones specifically.
Scarecrow is the most timeless and archetypal villain of the Dark Knight! It's a shame that he has not been given an iconic graphic novel like the Joker had with The Killing Joke! He definitely deserves to be the major Rogue in a future Batman animated and live action film. The fear hallucinations scenes could be showstoppers if done correctly! And all of them would forget their gimmick just to Kill that bastard of Crane - like Two Face ignoring his coin result (head, he lives) and just try to shot him. Or Nigma put in front of a riddlebox: he would be still not able to resolve it, with "Scarecrow(B)" tied in front of him and a gun into that dmnd box. And at the end Edward would just break the box by force and try to kill "Scarcrow", totally fucking off his gimmick. A "Terror/Shock therapy" for ALL of A.A. innmates. And, at the end, we would have Scarecrow, grinning to Batman and to all of Gotham City, with his final result: "I didn't just stop all of them with fear, as YOU, Batman, tried to do.... I CURED THEM!! I am the true MASTER OF FEAR". But that would not be the real epilogue: some time later, we would find Crane chased by a bunch of the rogues he tortured in A.A., and he would be saved by their rage by Batman , that would instead show him that what he did was just give them a NEW target: THE SCARECROW!!! Like a bunch of crows do with an actual scarecrow. Starting the story with Crane asking Batman for protection, from his "successfull experiments" and then showing the main plot by Batman and Scarecrow point of view. That would be both the Tryumph of the Scarecrow and the fall of him: showing that Arkham inmates aren't just "Mad people that need to be cured" (as he tried to do with his experiments) but also "Evil people that need to be stoped" (and that's something that Scarecrow is not able to do). He is indeed the master of fear, but what Gotham rogues need is not just "Fear". They need to be confronted by someone, to be stop both for their evilness and from their Madness. And only BATMAN can do that!!
BTAS and TNBA are what introduced me to Scarecrow, and many other of Batman's great villains, so those are my favorite versions of him. I do wish he was used more in BTAS, but I guess the voice actor for him was unavailable a lot of time, so he wasn't able to have a really really good episode in it. I also like quite a few of his comic appearances, mainly in Batman 296, which I think shows off his fear toxins the best out of any form of media. I really wish people would be as creative with the visuals of the toxins effects, as they were in that story. I also like him in the Arkham games, well at least asylum, but most of that comes from his tapes. I don't really like his design in that game personally, wish they made him look like his artwork for his in-game profile.
I was also introduced to him through TAS/TNBA - in fact that was the only version of Crane I knew for a very long time. I remember, after Batman & Robin came out, me and my friends all wanted Scarecrow to be in the next movie. We of course took for granted that there would be a next one (even though none of us really liked B&R) and Crane seemed like the logical next villain. In fact, I found it odd that they went to Ivy and Freeze before him. While I love the Arkham design, I agree, the profile artwork was also great. All the artwork on those profiles were execellent. Collecting them was a blast.
Have you ever read Batman: Shadow of the Bat # 16-18 The God of Fear? Its one of my favorite Scarecrow comic storylines personally, it happens right after the main portion of Knightfall is done. Ever since I found your channel I've always wondered what you thought of it, assuming you have read it.
Arkham put together the best parts of Crane, in my opinion. Besides the Nightmare levels were awesome to play, I love the way he twisted what was going on in the real world into a horror dimension where he reigned supreme. I feel like that should be how it works in the comics as well. However I like his costume from the comics better. (Gotta love that wizard hat)
hey, just a tidbit. Hugo Strange actually used a similar fear-gas in one of his earlier golden age stories. My headcannon is that Crane learned the formula for it from Hugo while in prison
@@peepeepoopoostudios3887 ... Hugo Strange using the fear gas PREDATES Scarecrow using it. Scarecrow has a doctorate in psychology, just like Hugo Strange. it makes sense in-universe that Hugo Invented the gas and Scarecrow perfected it
Sorry, I'm late. While Scarecrow is not my favourite Rogue he is one of my favourite characters, And I have a lot of respect for the character and absolutely love his concept.
I have an idea for how they can portray Scarecrow and maybe improve his image as a threat. They should make him a supernatural villain in the Bat Rogues, have him use magic and sorcery in his haunting sprees. I mean, all the other major rogues are either scientist, doctors, or crimelords, but nothing really bordering on the more mystic side of things, i mean this is Gotham for crying out loud, put something dark and mysterious into fold. Heck, his great grandma certainly acted like a witch. Maybe in an alternate headcanon, he's from a family of witchcraft and he's a modern day warlock.
i think a good way to explore his potential is to try a version where his gaz have some reality-bending properties, allowing the hallucinations to become real and giving scarescrow actual powers. Maybe make him into a monster as well. There's room for experiment in terms of new versions of the character.
Yeah the monster idea seems like a good idea. Make him something like Pennywise. I personally think he should be a supernatural threat, like a warlock or something.
@@deathstrokeclanrules8562 or maybe something more ironical, like there's an accident with his gas and can only look like the hallucinations of himself ?
Jaxon Movies22 My guess is that the network was trying to make a family friendly Saturday Morning cartoon version of the Scarecrow! I would have rather never seen that such a lame version had been created and aired!
I'd just like to point out that the 'martial arts' aspect of Scarecrow did not, in fact, come from nowhere; it seems to me it was a conscious attempt to harken back to his earliest days, where he was, in fact, quite a legitimate physical threat - in his first encounter with Batman and Robin, he creams them! Of course, this was back before ol' Bats was established as one of the greatest fighters on Earth, but still, Crane being a weakling is more a legacy of the Silver Age than an ingrained and inescapable part of his character, it seems to me.
*rolls up to the comments a year later* Scarecrow's always been my favorite Rogue, and you're absolutely right - he was always just left of widespread fame up until the Arkham games. I've always preferred Asylum's design and Dino's performance (met him once, and he's an awesome guy) to Knight's and Noble's, just like I like Polic/BTAS' over Combs/TNBA's. Both of the latter are very creepy and cool, but the former have more character to me. You can imagine there being an actual person in the costume - a weird, twisted one, but a person - whereas the other two are more... Fear as a concept and feel more like plot devices and one-dimensional villains rather than fully formed characters. I also love Scarecrow: Year One; despite its internal inconsistencies, it's my favorite Crane origin story. It's got substance and cool art even if the writer can't remember where and when events took place between ONLY TWO ISSUES. Sorry. Lot of Scarecrow opinions. ANYWAY. Crane will actually be appearing in a new animated series this year! He's one of the few named characters cast for the Harley Quinn animated series on DCUniverse, and he'll be voiced by iZombie's Rahul Kohli. I'm hoping him being one of the few officially confirmed characters means he'll have a significant recurring role.
Long time no see ;) I had no idea Harley was even getting an animated series... not sure how I feel about that; she's even more overused then the Joker himself. Still, it'll be fun to see Crane in animation again, it's been quite a while.
@@mr.rogues4145 Yeah, I think I feel better about it because more recently Harley's popularity is being used to introduce or utilize other characters, ie Margot Robbie using her star power to get new Batverse characters onto the big screen. And the Harley show is going to also include a good deal of the Rogues Gallery. The summary given so far says it's about Harley trying to join the Legion of Doom and getting other villains to help her. But yeah. I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing Crane's design.
OOH, this video was released on my birthday! HUZZAH! :D "[Don Messick's Scarecrow] kind of sounds like me, actually. Maybe that's why people keep saying I should voice Crane." (blinks...goes back and watches a Superfriends cartoon) ...Holy marbles, yeah, he actually sort of does. XD Actually, I've always had a fondness for the Superfriends Scarecrow, on that note; Messick's voice and the design of his mask actually creeped me out as a kid. The only downside is, like most of the Legion of Doom, he rarely (if ever) got a chance to shine as part of the group. Also, nice touch with all the "quick creepy edits." Was that Pennywise I saw in at least one of them? Also-also, while I do like "As the Crow Flies," I do find it odd that Crane was depicted in such a demeaning manner. In that particular tale, I didn't mind it so much, but later stories really bugged me...what few I've read. :P I bet you that, especially with the character's surge in popularity (thank you, Nolan, Arkham, and Injustice!) if they tried another story like that, Crane would just gas Ozzie at the first opportunity. ANYWAY, another interesting and comprehensive piece, comrade! :)
You aren't bothering me. I have done such a list. If you want, I can link you not only to that, but to the specific DeviantArt folder where I put all my comic-related lists. :)
Your birthday too, huh? Well happy birthday! Yeah I also find his Super friends mask to be pretty creepy. I prefer that design to the latter one in the last season, although the later depiction overall was a lot better. No, no Pennywise. At least I didn't add it.. ;) Who knows...
(eyes video suspiciously) I see... I agree about the design vs. the portrayal. I liked the voice and the look of the character more in Superfriends, but I liked the writing and overall portrayal of the character better in Super Powers Team. It was hard choosing between the two, let me tell you, when I made my list of Scarecrows. XD And thank you! :)
John - ah, that's right, you've made a best Scarecrow versions list, I might have missed out on that one.. Have to check it out! Severus - well, I got your thoughts on Riddle Me That right there haha.
He should have a super power to be able to turn into a fear demon with a powerful scythe and could also turn into fear gas, in order not to be too op he should be flammable...
This is a great video, scarecrow is my second favorite villain. My favorite batman villain of course is the riddler. I love your videos man keep it up the awesome nerdy batman videos. My favorite scarecrow version is the dark night games of course I have beaten all of them so many times and after awhile I found myself quoting him lol. And in the first movie batman begins move, I did not mind the new look in fact I kinda like him in a business suit and a creepy mask sure if was different but I thought it was enjoyable all the less. now the batman animated series in the last season that scarecrow was awesome, scarecrow/undertaker was really creepy and that voice could chill your bones. And sometime could you do a history about the mad hatter I always thought he was one of the most underrated batman villains and his mind control technology is one of the best weapons out there. I can tell mad hatter is not one of your favorite villains but I think a video on him would be great.
My favourites are the Riddler and Scarecrow they both are characters with a lot of potential if given the right people to write them. I never actually heard of both until I joined the fandom and even then at the beginning I only knew Joker because he is used a lot. If you actually think about it the Joker is used too much tbh
- Too bad we didn't get Scarecrow in The Batman(2004) cartoon, that would have been cool.(there is a concept art of what he looks like online) - Jeff Goldblum would have been a perfect Scarecrow in a 90's Batman film. - Scarecrow has made some great new appearances in The Lego Batman Movie, Batman Hush and Batman vs Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, so glad he's been featured a lot more recently.
Surprised Year One (the one from 2005, obviously not to be confused with the Frank Miller comic or Annual #19) wasn’t mentioned. It’s not perfect but I personally prefer it over the New 52 version
I love his look in Injustice, and I love the ambitious ending scenario he gets after beating Brainiac. He takes control of Brainiac's ship to use it to test the effects of fear on all the universe's life forms. Becoming the Universe's Master of Fear. :) I love also the look of the final animated series. I wonder if in the Brianiac scenario if he can extend his life span with the ship's technology, and become a true bogy man. Being able to study fear indefinitely, unrestrained by his ageing body forever :) Perhaps become the leader of the Yellow Lantern Corps?
This was a great video!! Really hope he is the main villain of the next Batman movie...Or even season 3 of Telltale's Batman game...There is a lot of potential with the fear toxin for mysteries and drama. Hul, and BTW, are you reading Batman: White Kinght?? I totally would like to see your review of that story...
I think I've said this before, but I'm okay with Crane having fighting skills, though only basic skills, something he learns much later in his life, and should really only be capable of fighting evenly with others with limited fighting skills, as well as"loser-rogues" like Kite-Man.
I'm only okay with him fighting with weapons, like scythes or sickles.. or maybe a fork, like in Living Hell haha. Don't like him using his fists and kicking. Sure, he's not supposed to be feeble like an old lady, pining Kite-Man in a grip or something is fine, but trading blows in a brawl? Nah..
Oh no, I don't see him as a brawler. Not even close in fact. I just see him being able to potentially overwhelm some loser rogue or cheap henchman as a last resort. He certainly wouldn't like it (He is the Master of Fear, not Fighting, after all), but he'd see the logic in learning basic self-defence techniques (maybe from Bane?); no "Crane Fu" or anything like that.
"Crane Fu" Haha yeah, that was really silly.. He chose the Crane style just because his name is Crane? Oh, Doug Moench, I love a lot of your Bat-work, but sometimes you could be reeeaaally silly..
Meh, at least Crane-Fu is silly in a fun way, so I cannot actively hate it, unlike a certain Elseworlds comic that features a woman empowered by Greek Gods praying to the f*cking Christian deity...but that's a story for another day.
I love the video on scarecrow I thought he was always scary that he seemed I didn't know he wasn't an icon to me he seems like a icon can't wait for you to do Two-Face next hope it's really good after you are done doing that one can you do the history of the penguin the gentlemen of crime slash mob boss I really like him a lot I always felt there was something about him that seem very interesting that kind of warming Charming look to him but if you push this button you see his true nature his Darkness and that's what I really liked I'll happy if you can get around to it or at least not forget to do that penguin history video please I would love it a lot it would mean a lot to me
Gotham Rogues Perhaps after Penguin you could go onto the histories of Poison Ivy and Killer Croc. Just a thought, but if you are too busy to do them, I understand.
Also as far as I know he’s the first DC villain to appear in a DC/non-DC property crossover that has no heroes or other villains in it, in the form of Happy Halloween, Scooby Doo. Well at least DC acknowledge the guy has a small but VERY loyal cult following even if he’s disappointingly not in the movie that much.
@@sarahsims6164 Indeed, maybe have him be unexpected to balance out the fact that they heavily advertised him as the main threat only to fake out. I mean I know trailers for mysteries sometimes use manipulative editing to hide the mystery (see Gone Girl for one example) ,but it feels less like “hiding something” and more like “false advertising”. Side note: I actually otherwise liked the way Maxwell Atoms wrote him, I wouldn’t mind seeing what he’d do with an all ages Batman.
I've always been a big fan of the Scarecrow even before the Arkham series. But after some consideration I definitely agree with you. The Arkham series is definitely where the Scarecrow came into his own. Although I still enjoyed his depictions in the Dark Knight. And personally, I'm actually kind of glad they didn't make Batman Unchained. While I respect Nicholas Cage as an actor I don't think he would've been good for the Scarecrow. Certainly not after many of the depictions of some of the other rogues in the previous two movies.
Injustice 2 is definetly has my favorite version of scarecrow portrayed. Just the way he’s able to deconstruct everyone’s fears and insecurities with a few comments. The fear monster design is also really neat and he used JUST enough fear puns to not be cheesy. My next pick is the one from Gotham as I just feel sorry for the poor kid.
I don't know if I can say that Scarecrow is my favorite Batman villain, but it's certainly one of the most bad-ass looking. And as with many others, his Gotham version is awesome
I would have to say that the Scarecrow is among Batman's top-ten villains, rather than being a second-rate villain as this video seemed to have explained. And as I've mentioned before, the Batman films of the 90s would have been made better with Michael Keaton still as The Dark Knight, Tim Burton as an executive producer (not as the director), & Dennis O'Neil as a consultant. I would also agree that the Scarecrow would have been the main villain in a Batman movie, with Brad Dourif for the role of Jonathan Crane/the Scarecrow. I've even read that the director of The Dark Knight Trilogy, Christopher Nolan, did say in an interview that he wished he had given Cillian Murphy more screen-time as Jonathan Crane/the Scarecrow.
I disagree with about Batman Begins because i remeber when that film came out and parctially every toy shop i went into was selling either Batman or Scarecrow toys not Ra's Al Ghul
I actually own the Lego figure of Scarecrow in his pizza delivery guy disguise as seen in "The Lego Batman Movie", which I could not resist purchasing for myself. ;)
Injustice version is so cool. Hopefully in the comics they continue with that look or make scarecrow gain the power of some ancient magical creature and reform himself of a creature of fear.
Do you like it when Crane uses crows? Or do you think it's too similar to Marvel's Scarecrow (Ebenezer Laughton)? Anyway Really cool video, hope Crane gets his own dark and horrifying "Killing Joke" story soon.

I’d say that subtracts from the coolness of the character . It’s just writers re using a cool idea
@@peepeepoopoostudios3887 ... Hugo Strange using the fear gas PREDATES Scarecrow using it.
Scarecrow has a doctorate in psychology, just like Hugo Strange. it makes sense in-universe that Hugo Invented the gas and Scarecrow perfected it
Well Mr.rogues you made a interestingly terrifyingly awesome video

Sorry, I'm late. While Scarecrow is not my favourite Rogue he is one of my favourite characters,
And I have a lot of respect for the character and absolutely love his concept.
This is honestly one of my all time favourite UA-cam channels. Keep up the awesome work Rouges!
Thank you very much!
There was a time Scarecrow took on The Joker when the clown prince had his own comic book series for a bit.
Its werid in superfriends scarecrow used crows like marvels scarecrow.
i think a good way to explore his potential is to try a version where his gaz have some reality-bending properties, allowing the hallucinations to become real and giving scarescrow actual powers.
4:44 That's Scarecow's first apperance in another medium! Why does he have lipstick?
Jaxon Movies22 My guess is that the network was trying to make a family friendly Saturday Morning cartoon version of the Scarecrow! I would have rather never seen that such a lame version had been created and aired!
The Scarecrow is my second favorite Batman villain after Joker
Finally! Been waiting for another one of these videos.
I’m shocked he had popularity problems because he is in my top 5 favorite Batman villains.
"Got cold feet" "Put the project on ice" Oh my God, I love you.
Do two face next :)
Scarecrow truly is the ghoul of games.
You sound like you came right of a cartoon... love it
*rolls up to the comments a year later* Scarecrow's always been my favorite Rogue, and you're absolutely right - he was always just left of widespread fame up until the Arkham games.
Scarecrow is on the same level as the joker for me!
OOH, this video was released on my birthday! HUZZAH! :D
"[Don Messick's Scarecrow] kind of sounds like me, actually. Maybe that's why people keep saying I should voice Crane."
(blinks...goes back and watches a Superfriends cartoon) ...Holy marbles, yeah, he actually sort of does. XD
Actually, I've always had a fondness for the Superfriends Scarecrow, on that note; Messick's voice and the design of his mask actually creeped me out as a kid.

XD
And thank you! :)
John - ah, that's right, you've made a best Scarecrow versions list, I might have missed out on that one.. Have to check it out!
Severus - well, I got your thoughts on Riddle Me That right there haha.
Your videos are very interesting. You deserve more subs
Thanks mate!
He should have a super power to be able to turn into a fear demon with a powerful scythe and could also turn into fear gas, in order not to be too op he should be flammable...
It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on Batman/Scooby Doo cross overs as there was a new one released straight to DVD recently.
Might do some Scooby/Bats stuff in the future. Who knows.
The first super villain to ever get its Fame from a video game lol
Maybe his role in begins is why he became seen as a second string in the Juddick run.
Just forgot to mention the 2005 Scarecrow Year One, one of my favourite comics that I have.
Great video GR, would love to see your take in the history of the injustice league
My favourites are the Riddler and Scarecrow they both are characters with a lot of potential if given the right people to write them. I never actually heard of both until I joined the fandom and even then at the beginning I only knew Joker because he is used a lot.
If you actually think about it the Joker is used too much tbh
Another excellent video from the guy himself, I hope to see others like Anarky! Keep it up dude!
you can voice scarecrow in a Batman animated film, one day
- Too bad we didn't get Scarecrow in The Batman(2004) cartoon, that would have been cool.(there is a concept art of what he looks like online)
- Jeff Goldblum would have been a perfect Scarecrow in a 90's Batman film.
4"48
So scarecrow was too scary for the Adam West show but that nightmare inducing animated version was perfectly fine...
I wish they use scarecrow more in the comics
my favorite batman villain
No not yet, been hearing great things about it though. Probably get it when it's finished.
I think you are going to like it...at least some parts of it.
My favorite comic book villains are Scarecrow, Professor Zoom, Red Skull, Amazo and Kang
What about injustice 2 scarecrow?
I love the video on scarecrow I thought he was always scary that he seemed I didn't know he wasn't an icon to me he seems like a icon can't wait for you to do Two-Face next hope it's really good after you are done doing that one can you do the history of the penguin the gentlemen of crime slash mob boss I really like him a lot I always felt there was something about him that seem very interesting that kind of warming Charming look to him but if you push this button you see his true nature his Darkness and that's what I really liked I'll happy if you can get around to it or at least not forget to do that penguin history video please I would love it a lot it would mean a lot to me
Oh yeah, Pengy is after Dent ;) after that I don't know.. But Dent and Pengy are guaranteed.
Gotham Rogues Perhaps after Penguin you could go onto the histories of Poison Ivy and Killer Croc. Just a thought, but if you are too busy to do them, I understand.
I want to see a Batman film with Nicholas Cage as the Scarecrow *and* the Dark night.
In the Filmation cartoon, Scarecrow had an egg theme, which made him resemble Egghead rather than Jonathan Crane.
considering how mr freeze the riddler and two face (oh and also poison ivy) look
im rather interested on how scarecrow might look....
I'd definitely give anything to see the HHSD version come back, and make him the main and ONLY villain.
You would be a great Scarecrow voice actor
I've always been a big fan of the Scarecrow even before the Arkham series. But after some consideration I definitely agree with you. The Arkham series is definitely where the Scarecrow came into his own.
Although I still enjoyed his depictions in the Dark Knight. And personally, I'm actually kind of glad they didn't make Batman Unchained. While I respect Nicholas Cage as an actor I don't think he would've been good for the Scarecrow. Certainly not after many of the depictions of some of the other rogues in the previous two movies.
Yeah, Cillian Murphy was better in that department
I’m not sure if you’ve seen it but the cartoon “Galaxy Rangers” they have a supernatural scarecrow enemy that has a great look.
Honestly, its a tie between the New Batman Adventures and the Arkham variations.
0:28 eh wtf
AidanIsAwesome thank you!!!! Someone else noticed it!!
This makes mama happy 😊
They can make a horror movie about the scarecrow
I’d love to see more of these about more of the Bat Rouges. Especially for Poison Ivy, she’s my favorite.
I was expecting you to run out of campy titles for the Scarecrow halfwat through but you didn't at all. Nice job.
What will you do after Penguin? Poison Ivy? or maybe Mr.Freeze?
My Ideal Scarecrow comic would have stephen Gammel do the Fear Hallucinations
I saw lots of Ra's toys, and anyway, the toys don't change the fact that Crane was just Ra's' pawn in the movie.
Good point well made
When did Scarecrow start using a scythe? I seen him with it a lot. But I ever found out where it originated.
Good question. I wonder the same about Eddie's cane.
@@mr.rogues4145 Same for Penguin's umbrella

That very may well be the case. Luckily I know a certain detective who is perfect for Johnny.

I always like Scarecrow and Poison Ivy stories because of how Batman resists their mind altering chemicals.
The Scarecrow is so awesome!!!! He's my absolute favorite.
My favorite it’s ironicly the brave and bold version
Nothing on the time he got his hands on the Yellow Power Ring? Or what he did afterwards?
I always wonder why in some of the designs of the scracecrow, they put a nuce around his neck. Is an style choice or it has some meaning?
9:24 did anyone else see Tyler Durden?
Injustice version is so cool. Hopefully in the comics they continue with that look or make scarecrow gain the power of some ancient magical creature and reform himself of a creature of fear.
