isn't it weird how that worked out? they had this serial killer actor, and completely unrelated had this shape shifting guy, and it fits together so well
I think my all time favorite Clayface is Preston Payne. I mean his science goes wrong, he melts people by touch. He’s a sympathetic, and tragic as well as a horror based Clayface.
The reason why the DCAU version of Clayface was called Matt Hagen is pretty simple: a hybrid of the three main incarnations of the Batman Villain which preceded him. - He resembles Basil Karlo (the Golden Age Clayface) in that he was an actor; even being nicknamed "The Man of a Thousand Faces" which was a moniker used for the real-life actor Lon Chaney who was an inspiration behind the creation of Karlo's character. Since BtaS, Basil Karlo's characterization in the comics has also been often lifted from the DCAU Hagen. - Obviously Matt shares his name with Matt Hagen, the Silver Age Clayface but in-addition to this, the shapeshifting clay behemoth version of Clayface originates from Hagen's incarnation of the character. - The DCAU Clayface resembles the Bronze Age Clayface, Preston Payne in the more tragic portrayal of his character. Also, Hagen's characterization resembles that of Payne as he appeared in Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth in having Hagen's condition objectively analogous for the consequence of the male AIDS pandemic (albeit in the DCAU it is handled sympathetically whereas in Grant Morrison's novel it was vilified).
I was just talking to my friend the other day about how the 1940s Clayface would be perfect for The Batman 2. While I’d definitely prefer my Clayface to have his powers, the plot of the original Basil Karlo story could be lifted wholesale to create an awesome movie.
I want meta human creature feature body horror monsters psychological and supernatural slasher villian type batman villains in matt reeves world like all three clayfaces combined into one, the man bat, comics accurate bane, an h.r. Geiger reinvented poison ivy attractive plant monster, Solomon grundy, killer croc, ventriloquist and scarface, scarecrow, Mr freeze
As Sondra's biggest fan I'd recommend Gotham City Monsters, I think it's the closest thing we've got to a character insight for her since, arguably, her first appearance. Plus it's also just a good little mini series
I feel like the modern incarnation of Basil Karlo was essentially created to piggyback off of the popularity of BTAS's composite version of Matt Hagan, sort of like how Mr. Freeze was updated to match the BTAS iteration of the character. But that could just be me. BTAS's version is still probably my favorite, but Clayface III is definitely interesting.
While I know some people don’t like villains becoming heroes, Clayface becoming a member of the Bat Family was great. On paper it’s bad but it was executed so well, especially with his friendship with Cassandra Cain.
@@gerarquiaFM Killer Croc should have been recruited into the bat family instead of Clayface. Killer Croc was the sympathetic monster long before they gave Basil a single story
My favourite is the modern Basil Karlo, I know call me basic. Lady Clayface is also my least favourite because her only differentiation is that she's a woman. Also I hate how humanoid she is compared to the other Clayfaces, because God forbid the lady villain isn't fuckable to some extent!
Payne is definitely my personal favorite. The tragedy behind him is that he just wants love and acceptance, and that makes him kinda relatable in a way.
As much as I like Basil, my favourite Clayface is Preston Payne. His backstoty, his design, his motivations and his powers makes him a great tragic rogue. I love to see him appear In the upcoming 2023 Batman cartoon. It be a nice change from using Basil again.
There's a reason a lot of early DC character have to be split between their "Earth 1" and "Earth 2" versions if they survived under the same name from the golden to the silver age, especially in the Batman stable. So many villains and other characters just became something totally new when the switch occurred, which isn't really something that happened at Marvel.
Hello, my favorite clayface is Basil Karlo. I think he looks a lot like Vincent Price in his human form in the "mud pack" saga. And his "ultimate Clayface" form was really cool
Sweet, always down for some Mr. Rouges takes on Clayface. I often wonder how a session with Hugo and Preston would go down. The Arkham game version of Clayface was fun, one of my favorites is Dark Knight Clayface reciting lines to his cellmate who was a fan. Also not to butter you up but what you did with clayface in his Hugo interview is great.
Arkham Asylum’s Profile of Clayface said his touch would melt others into protoplasm now I see where they got it Most Modern Clayfaces are just Mixtures of all of them
My favorite Clayface is an underrated one. Ethan Bennett from The Batman animated series from 2004. He was a policeman who was friends with Bruce and trusted the Batman more than anyone on the force at first. Unfortunately, Joker mutated his skin after psychologically tormenting him and his mind broke.
I would say take the og Basil Karlo, give him a different name, and call his persona The Terror. Hey Mr. Rogues, hunt down the Vincent Price movie Madhouse for some serious og Basil Karlo vibes!
Preston Payne's name should've been Mr. Melt or Melt-Man rather than Clayface III since he doesn't the shape-shifting ability like the other Clayfaces. Wow, Melt-Man kinda sound like a rejected Robot Master from Mega Man of something else. Or maybe he should be named as Mr. Clay or something, I'll don't know.
Ah yes quite the conundrum. The original Basil was perfect, but then they changed him so the stories could be expanded. A case of improving the character than didn't actually make him worse. I'd have put one of the Basils in the #1 spot. Probably the first for being first. Still a good list.
The Clayface that I was introduced to in Batman: TAS ( episode, " Feat Of Clay Parts 1&2" ) was a fusion of the first Clayface, Bazil Karlo, who was a movie actor who went rogue after his movie, The Terror, was remade, and Matt Haygen, the treasure hunter!
@Oswald Cobblepot I do, however, like reading about the characters in my books eventhough I don't read comics along with looking up their profile online on a certain website 👩💻. Knowledge is power!
With his blue underwear, does anyone else think the Silver Age Matt Hagen looked like the really early depictions of Ben Grimm as the Thing by Jack Kirby?
My favorite Clayface has to be Ethan Bennet from The Batman (2004 cartoon). Why? Because his story is tragically connected to Bruce Wayne. Bennett is a police detective who has been friends with Bruce since high school. Until one day (the end of season one (1)) The Joker (who else?) decided to use him as bait for Batman using a new "product" of his known as "Joker Putty" The fumes of the putty not only start messing with his head but gives him the shapeshifting powers Clayface is known for. I always liked the original Mudpack, all of them. Somehow modern Basil Karlo being the only Clayface and basically just having the Matt Hagen powers for different reasons seems flat to me, as is Matt Hagen being an actor, knowing how the concept originally developed and all the various Clayfaces there were before. Karlo, Hagen, Payne, and then Lady Clay are each like a little microcosm of the golden, silver, bronze, and, I guess, post-bronze ages of comics, and I like the idea of all of them wrapping up their own arcs. Matt Hagen as a kind of ghost of the silver age who lives on only through the continuation of his weird sci-fi ability I think is perfect, as is Clayfaces III and IV going off into the sunset together, and Karlo taking their abilities for himself to become some terrifying eldritch monstrosity just seems very full and right.
Definitely Current Basil Karlo. I mean, c'mon, an actor that can shape-shift? Pure genius! Preston Payne is a close second because of how scary and tragic he can be.
I know it's a coincidence, but the original Basil Karlo looks like the horror icon: Vincent Price. Although he started his career in 1935 (5 years before Basil Karlo was created), he wouldn't become famous until 1960s.
Well, he did as far as the Mud Pack storyline! The earliest incarnations of him had him look a lot more generic, maybe a bit of visual inspiration from Boris Karloff but it was hard to tell.

I think an awesome way to make a Clayface-centric Batman movie would be to have him start out as the classic Basil Karlo slasher version, give him a brief taste of his powers near the beginning of the film - I would go the 'cave protoplasm' route; have it be a sample displayed somewhere that he gets accidentally exposed to - and slowly become obsessed with getting them permanently. I would keep the original motivation of having his old role being overshadowed, but the thing is, he's an older guy now; his youth is past him, and he soon realizes that he's in over his head. He used to specialize in these physical, acrobatic roles, and in his pride, assumed that he'd be able to do all that again to get revenge as Clayface - but he can't. Batman nearly wipes the floor with him until he encounters the protoplasm, and that's not enough to do more than allow him to get away. He must find more of that stuff! He must regain his edge! So he goes on a spree stealing more of it (I figure that anything that bizarre would be widely studied, so there's lots of bits and pieces of it in labs and such), until finally, he has enough to do what he wants. Summoning Batman to the old movie studio where he used to work, he douses himself in the stuff, and THAT'S when he becomes full-on monster Clayface. And at first, he's in control - he loses, of course, because he's the villain, but he's all smug about it - like, 'who cares; I'm back on top of my game now'. Then, in a final post-credits stinger, we see him try to become his old self - or anything remotely normal - for more than a few seconds, and he fails. Again and again. Nothing lasts more than a few seconds. A look of horror passes across his shifting features; he screams a gurgling scream, and - end movie.
Hey Mr Rogues can you make a video on reviewing ur thoughts on the first comic Preston Payne was in in the New 52 continuity its a new comic released in January of this year and I was wondering what ur thoughts on it are
Preston Payne is my favorite. I wish Beware the Batman had included him, since he would’ve fit that show like a glove. Also, the Young Justice had a nice updated version of Matt Hagen, where the protoplasm pool that gives him his powers was changed to the Lazarus Pit, and being locked inside of it for so long mutated him.
I’ve always liked btas Matt haggin. Actors getting older has been a plot point touched on everywhere but basil was the solution I think nobody could have imagined truly the dystopian version of never getting older, any role at the expense of your humanity
the OG Basil Karlo really resembles Vincent Price's character from House of Wax (1953), i wonder if DC looked at that movie for inspiration when creating the first clayface. "The Terror" is even a real life horror movie from 1963 that starred Boris Karloff
Really good list. For the most part we seem to agree. All of your choices are on my list, although some are in different spots. My list: 5. Sondra Fuller 4. Matt Hegan 3. The original Basil Karlo 2. Preston Payne 1. The modern Basil Karlo To be honest, these really the only good Clayfaces, in my opinion. The rest are just okay. Cassius Payne, aka Clayface V, the son of Preston and Sondra, had potential but was never used well. Claything, aka Clayface VI, was kind of unnecessary. Not terrible, but nothing was lost or gained by his existence. Todd Russell, aka Clayface VII, had a little potential, but nothing ever really became of him. Johnny Williams, aka Clayface VIII, had a decent origin and tragic backstory, but once again nothing ever became of him. These other Clayfaces basically ended up as unfinished projects, and I don’t know if they need finishing. Basil is really the only Clayface we need. Sondra and Preston have made appearances post-Rebirth, which I’m fine with. Even though it would be a shame to ditch Matt Hegan and the rest, they aren’t really necessary. Basil, Preston, and Sondra are the ones I feel should be continually used. Maybe Matt, but I think the rest don’t need to make comebacks. We’ve had more than enough Clayface sequels, let the original few continue to shine.

I'm gonna say pre-rebirth Karlo is one of my least faves. There's no real tragedy to him, just a petty, egomaniacal prick who kills for fun. It sucks how Preston and Sondra get less spotlight despite being far more interesting. I do like Rebirth Basil though.
Why isn't Matt Reeves turning his batman franchise into a horror creature feature slasher movie franchise like the blade movies its only fitting? 🤔 the Riddler felt like Michael myers at the beginning of the batman, and joker looks like a chemical burnt ghoul in the deleted scenes like the Gotham TV show, its dumb and wasted potential why nobody wants to do the Cronenberg esque body horror, creature feature slasher movie elements of the batman mythos, like reinventing Poison ivy as a plant monster human hybrid instead of reducing her to being a lesbian love intrest to harley quinn they could make her like the h.r. gieger shape shifting human alien hybrid sil from species meets swamp thing and floronic man, he could be reinventing bane as a steroid monster in a luchador mask with intelligence to boot, he could be using Solomon grundy who's basically the dc comics equivalent to Jason Voorhees Michael myers Victor Crowley an unstoppable unkillable slasher, he could be reinventing Mr freeze as a freeze gun wielding psychopath or doing man bat justice in live action and clay face in the movies he could do a more creepy scarecrow in theories do we have to have every batman film grounded in reality with 5he newer new 52 elementsike court of owls or having deathstroke the terminator fight bats and picking out the same non meta human villains of bats Rouges?
Why do they have to make TONS of characters with the same powers, and more especifically, the same name?! It's annoying! Can't be just ONE Clayface, for God's sake?! And this is why I prefer Basil Karlo's Clayface. Focus only on ONE.
The current Basil Karlo is definitely my favorite. There’s something so genius about having an actor who can become literally anyone.

Are you counting Todd Russell as a clayface 2 because I was just wondering
My Favorite Clayface is Thor, I Mean He's a Great Character, Batman indirectly caused The Death of His Parents and was just went the Wrong Path
even visually preston payne looks the best
Do you have a favorite Karlo story?
How did lady clayface and Preston Payne have a child? Do they have reproductive organs? How does this work?
If Clayface does appear in a live-action Batman film who would play him?
Clayface III is the best!!!
I thought u were a malaysian or filipino guy
Everyone who wants a creature -feature adaptation of "the coming of clayface 3" like this comment!
I always thought Preston Payne would fit better as a Batman Beyond villain more then OG Batman.
What happened to you Rogues? You don’t seem as happy as you used to be
damn, you like to get personal, don't you?
Why do they have to make TONS of characters with the same powers, and more especifically, the same name?! It's annoying! Can't be just ONE Clayface, for God's sake?!
And this is why I prefer Basil Karlo's Clayface. Focus only on ONE.

Matt Hagen will ALWAYS be the best Clayface and he is my favorite character too!
