Let's be honest, guys. If Alfred had been attacked with the Scarecrow's anti-fear toxin, his reaction would have been immobilizing the villain with a professional flying kick and telling him, "I'm sorry to inform you, sir, I can't experience the loss of something I never had."

    • @Lowkeylie

      Respectfully disagree.
Alfred has one very tangible, overwhelming fear:
The loss of another member of his family. He’s seen enough members of them die. He won’t lose another if he can ever help it again.

What I like about this episode is that not only did the Scarecrow get a visual design change, but also in his plans. Instead of in increasing fear, he does the opposite by removing it entirely. That shows that he has learned over the course of his career.

    • @Elhvir
      @Elhvir Рік тому

To be fair, removing fear is as effective of a method of destroying society as is increasing it. Like we saw with Bruce's employee, without any sort of fear for cause and effect, people will literally act on impulses. Even if one doesn't want to hurt someone, lack of fear for negative effects would make people do bad stuff. Like here, he saw a woman he got hots for, and just went for it. Imagine if said lady had no fear of what would happen if she smacked daylights out of him. Then in comes a security guard who wants to get in on her good side too, and without fear of effect, would almost murder said man. And the chain continues like this.
Now, apply that chain to entire city. Everything would collapse in hours.

  • @TetsuShima

It was a very nice detail making Robin the one who manages to prevent Batman from killing the Scarecrow and return him to normal. Apart from serving as a sidekik, the different Robins have served him numerous times as a reminder of his moral principles. In fact, their bond has sometimes literally saved the day. For example, in a 1986 comic, Batman manages to avoid succumbing to the effects of the fear toxin by having his greatest fear overcome the one caused by the toxin, with his biggest concern being losing Jason Todd.

Subway cars have a "dead man's switch" where the operator has to hold a switch down (or a handle in place) to operate the train. If the operator has a heart attack or another serious problem and is disabled the brakes automatically activate.
At the end of every subway line, there are mechanical trips that activate the train's brakes to prevent the train from running off the end of the line.

We never got Scarecrow in a prominent role (tho a decent recurring role in the Nolan films) outside the comics until the incredible Arkham games with some of the greatest designs for Scarecrow since…well, THIS episode! Also, special shout-out to Injustice 2 for making Scarecrow a playable character, voiced to perfection by the legendary Robert Englund, probably the ONLY way to top Jeffrey Coombs’ vocal performance.

i love Scarecrow's plan this time around. a downside to fear-based characters is they tend to do the same thing over and over with little division or variety. this time he not going to bring you fear to live but take away your fear. and let the iragonce that is often confused with bravery be your downfall.

I agree they could have explore more the idea of Batman without fear, however the fact it was short might have been the point of the episode. Without fear no one is able to survive because the person no longer fears death or has covern for his or her life, something that episode proves with Batman almost crashing the bat-plane in building as well almost dying with Scarecrow.

I remember a similar storyline in the comics - Batman is possessed by a demon in one issue. In the next, criminals in a warehouse learn he’s coming and try to prepare by checking the ceiling and other ways of protecting themselves against a normal Batman, but the demonic Batman just busts through the door absorbing bullets to terrify everyone all over again.

Oh man, this episode had everything for me: awesome action, amazing animation by TMS, one of the raddest redesigns in the whole DCAU, and a relevant moral that plays an important role. Fear is rarely depicted in a positive way outside of Inside Out, and it should get more support. Yes, fear is often responsible for prejudice, chaos, and paranoia and can make us lose confidence, but it also helps us recognize danger, forces us to use our heads, and prevents us from acting on our worst instincts. If not for fear, I would've caused a car crash on my first driving test or persisted to shove my hand down an impossibly narrow crevice.

Out of all of the Scarecrow episodes that we've had, 'Never Fear' was the most unique in terms of it's concept and execution. A gas that can take away people's fears and make them become reckless was very unusual but it made for a great story with the idea of Batman not being afraid to kill made it even more interesting. I loved that Robin was the one who had to stop Batman trying to take lives, i would have preferred if Nightwing was the one who had to restrain Batman but i understand that they wanted to more establish Tim Drake as the new Robin and see what situations he could handle. I wasn't completely sold on a lot of the redesigns but the one they came up with for Scarecrow was fantastic, it's my all time favourite and he looked like something out of a Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie. A brilliant episode and wished we got to see more of Scarecrow in TNBA, he is one of the best Batman villains ever.
Side note: i wish they explored this concept further in the Justice League animated series where Batman could have suffered a relapse from Scarecrow's toxin and have a situation where Superman & the whole team have to deal with an out of control dark knight who isn't afraid to kill.

There’s this little moment when Batman is approaching the Scarecrow from behind on the train, and you hear this deep, evil, guttural choir chanting. It’s for a few seconds. But it’s terrifying. Utterly terrifying. It elevates Scarecrow from potentially just another villain to a force of unknown, an eldritch evil. Something from Night on Bald Mountain.

The theory I heard that can explain this goes that the reason Bruce feels so cold is because he's having a burnout or the toll of being the gaurdian of Gotham is starting to get to him.
Bruce started out to end the mob but eventually things got out of hand when Joker showed up then Man-Bat, Scarecrow and ect started to pop up.
It begs the question how long can he stay tge same?
How long can he care for Harvey when he watches him kill folks on the drop of a coin?
How long can he read of all the people that Phantasm will kill for cash without realizing she's a nothing but a killer.
How muh can he stomach knowing created The Joker or how much can Fear gas can he take and have his folks yell at him before he gets numb to it all?
I think this can explain that Bruce is just overworked and his getting over this Batman thing but he knows that if he quits it's the apocolypse for Gotham.

What you said makes sense when consider that, in the JL episode where Superman is seemly killed, Bruce goes to his tombstone and says that "Clark show him that justice doesn't need to come from the darkness", establishing that, while Bruce became more darker in TNBA, he slowly recover his humanity as he fought alongside other light optimistic heroes like Superman and the Justice League.

@@alexandrefrauches132 plus I think in the JL episode "A Better World" when Bruce battled JL Lord Batman I think this was the wake up call Bruce needed when he realized how similar they were and how close he was to turning into him.
As Dr Fate said it "Justice is blind not heartless" Bruce was slowly loosing his heart (example, in the ep Cold Confer Bruce frozen an Ice maiden's leg which the series confirmed to cause bad hypothermia) but after meeting the JL and seeing his Dark reflection he grew more as a person.

Speaking of going off the deep end, in the first episode of batman beyond as Bruce was forced to use a handgun in order to protect himself and Bunny Freeland from a goon. Who mind you attempted to beat Bruce to death and who knows what he would've happened to Freeland. This was a act of desperation with Bruce's injuries from the assault and his heart related illnesses, Bruce learned he could no longer be the dark knight. Especially when he came close to using the one thing that took his parents away.

The thing that I’ve always loved about the new scarecrow, besides the new creep design and voice is the idea if it’s a costume or not, crane was a short and skinny guy but this one is tall and with large inhuman shoulders
and the head is perfectly ambiguous if it’s a sack over the shirt or if the shirt is torn off and it’s revealing his skin
Who knows, maybe his gas mutates him, maybe he’s always leaking gas (no pun intended) to make him look more intimidating or it’s just a design choice with no real logic behind
