Luxury Fashion Is For Poor People

  • Designer brands are worn by poor people, not the rich. This is mostly due to the fact that Luxury brands have set their sights on the middle class. This has encouraged people to go beyond their means spending big on Gucci, Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton, Hermes, and so much more.
Luxury Fashion has made Bernard Arnault, the CEO of LVMH, the richest person on Earth, with a net worth over $200 Billion. This all came from charging insanely high prices for a designer logo that we can all walk around with.

What is all of your take on this topic? Do you think that there is genuine value behind these goods? Or do they merely exist to create the illusion of "status?"

I am so frustrated by such videos, which are made on a hype over new and old money distinction. Made by someone who doesn’t understand the topic for someone who doesn’t understand the topic.
All luxury brands have stock lines which do have logos all over the place (just because it’s trendy now), as well as some more quiet pieces which don’t yell at you about their price tag, made from better quality materials - for instance leathers which are generally produced only in certain parts of the world or even country, which makes them more expensive (for instance Hermes Togo Leather of LV Taurilion leather).
Saying that rich people don’t buy LV, YSL or Gucci is a straight up madness. It’s all up to the person style and preferences.

My house and cars are paid off, no credit card debt, and a closet full of clothes from JP Penny, Wal-Mart, etc. I think I’m entitled to my one luxury item (Rolex). It’s for me and I don’t care what other people think about it. Any opinions?

Generalization videos like this by someone who clearly doesn’t underfashion neither the brands exposed to a mass public who mostly doesn’t understand is even worse… people do not just but clothes for status some buy it for the love to fashion design, history references, inspiration, etc. Those brands you mentioned have multiple styles that are very elegant, have wonderful high quality materials and do not have displayed logos as well.
This stupid obsession with the old money and new money style is ridiculous- by portraying yourself in one or the other it won’t govern you upbringing, values, education, experience, breed , assets, inheritance etc form the old money, neither the new millions of the other, this topic is very much more complex

I bought myself a Rolex when I got my CPA license. It was less than $10,000. It was the subtle Explorer 2.
Getting my license took 6 years of constant discipline and hard work. The watch was a treat to myself after saving for 5 years.
What’s crazy to me is that some people go into debt or draw from their retirement accounts to acquire these luxury items.

Lots of rich people buy this stuff - but why is that even important? I remember from working in the industry that 1% of very wealthy clients would literally make up about 40%-50% of the turnover - in RTW it would be higher, and in accessories a bit lower. Apart from that there is no “quiet luxury” or “old money” aesthetics. In the history of fashion we move from minimalist periods to maximalist and back - nothing new. Apart from that, it’s funny to jump on the bandwagon of criticizing logos, while trying to mimic what you believe “old money” would wear with sweatshop clothing from fast fashion brands made of plastic.

I don’t do logos. Never did. I grew up poor af. Still am. My mom would occasionally buy me Hollister but she knew I don’t do logos. I still go to Aeropostale but I just buy Henleys & pants. 😂 some thought I was rich in school bc my cousin’s family is.

Like Barry Wang bomber jackets was less than a hundred when , when you look at the embroidery and the designer style and threading it should have went for at least 200$ . Point is , if I like it I’m going to buy it if in my price range. It’s simple really…
Look back at the history of items before they became luxury items.
They were originally tools created for functional purposes.
Watch was originally created as a tool to tell the time.
A bag was a practical item to carry items.
A car was created to replace horse carriage.
They were all originally created for functional purposes. But how do you convince people to buy these tools for public and everyday life use? They had it to make it attractive by adding decoration of luxury. Just like you decorate cakes otherwise people wouldn’t buy it.
To make the items attractive to the public, the concept of luxury was created.
Luxury is a man made concept.
People who buys luxury items are generally unaware of the items origin. Like Rolex was originally a tool that people forgot or unaware of. But Rolex’s marketing overshadowed the watch history by making people to focus on the watch’s aesthetics. They added decorations to the watch Ike diamond and gold.

A backpack from Louis Vuitton is about $5,000 USD. The gold Rolex datejust in your thumbnail is about 15-23k depending on whether it’s purchased at resale value or brand new. A Louis Vuitton suitcase styled to look like an LV trunk is about 10k usd.

As a millionaire myself I’d say I don’t care for luxury items that much at all. Luxury items like Gucci or LV don’t seem luxurious to me anymore. When I was younger I saw people wearing Gucci and LV in the bus or subway and I used to think if they’re rich why are there using public transport. I believe more in good fabric and comfort. Therefore I understand what you’re trying to say. I get my clothes tailored by my family tailor so my clothes are custom made for me. The only ‘luxurious’ things I wear are my watches since I’m very into watches and probably the only items I spend lots of money on apart from my technology which aids my work. The only way legitimately people can tell if I’m rich or not is looking at my wrist. Otherwise I’ll look like some accountant.

Why are anti-luxury people just as out of touch with reality with pro-luxury consumers? Poor people are struggling to pay bills, buy food and afford basic necessities. If you’re equating the middle/upper middle class with being poor, you are equally delusional. If you equate luxury with “looking rich”, that’s your own insecurity. People buy things they like, and that’s okay.

I suppose it all depends on everyone’s definitions of luxury. Because many people buy these bags because of the attention they draw, not for themselves to get utility out of
