I have appreciated finding your videos. I recently moved from a cold place to a place where I can actually take care of my yard, which I found out that I had no idea how to do that. These videos have been helpful for me, thank you.
Another great video! These 2 things: doing a soil test and the outrageous cost of "organic" fertilizers, have been some of the biggest barriers of me going DIY! This is such common sense right here! Also, I have read some things about MIlorganite that make me question if it really is as safe and healthy as some claims.
Thank you. It really has been complicated by a lot of folks over the years. This video is a couple years old. I've simplified things even more since then. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Very simple program! Seeing how everything is going up in a cost a budget friendly program is something that a lot of people will find useful and it delivers great results!
I 100 percent agree. I only use weed and feed in the spring a shot of nitrogen in the summer and fall formulated fertilizer in the fall, and my lawn look nice! Over-seed! Over-seed! Over-seed!
Awesome 👊. You’re right. Overseeding is key to cool season grasses. Fortunately us bermudgrass folks don’t have to do that step 😎appreciate ya watching and commenting.
Okay, I had TruGreen doing my lawn last year. Wasn't very happy with them. So.. I'm going back to doing it myself. I'm going to follow your steps. I think you had the best and simple advice on lawn care. Thanks for posting!
@@BudgetLawns No problem. Thanks for putting the information out there in such a straight forward way. I've used Scotts turf builder weed and feed in the past and bought Greenview Fairway plus crabgrass this year on the recommendation of my local Agway. I see both have high nitrogen with no phosphorus and little potassium. I always wondered why the formula was so unbalanced, and what you are saying about 10-10-10 makes sense. The plants need each one in the right proportion, and the Scotts and Greenview products seems to be targeted to make the lawn look good quickly, but lack the balance. Generic 10-10-10 is also much cheaper! I'll also try the Spectracide granular product this fall and possibly next spring too. I have lots of crabgrass and my lawn is full of other weeds as well. I want it to look a little better without spending a lot. The soil is terrible and it everything dries out in the summer. I know I could water it, but I'm just not interested in that. I'm in south central PA and it is wet enough here in the spring and fall. I just want to give the grass a little better chance to out compete the weeds and I'll leave the rest up to nature.
@@Fix_It_Again_Tony You're speaking my language here man. Sounds like you're getting all your ducks in a row and will have it looking the way you want it before long. Keep up the good work!
Thank you my brother. Nice healthy lawn within reasonable budget is always my goal. Been looking for a channel that understands most of us can’t mow every three days or drop 10k on a mower. Just because they can make those purchases and write it off, us viewers can’t. Appreciate you for keeping it KISS (keep it simple and stupid). Subscripted.
I applied the Spectracide Weed Stop with crabgrass killer with a hose last week as you recommended and my lawn already looks way better. I'm looking forward to applying one more bottle of the Weed Stop next week. My lawn is about 7500 sq ft and I believe one bottle treats about 5000 sq ft so I feel I went light on the application yet the results look very nice. I'll work on remaining weeds manually and apply the pre-emergent/preventer sometime later when conditions are right. Thank you for the good advice!
That's awesome! Happy to hear you're already seeing good results. Sounds like you've got a solid plan for the next steps. Keep it up. You're moving in the right direction for sure! Thanks so much for watching and sharing this. Appreciate your support!
Good info for someone starting lawn care. For those of us with the knowledge, I enjoyed watching beginning to end. I would like to see or hear of the backyard fence line ideas. A few weeks and you have successfully made through another school year 🥳🤟👍
Thanks man. Appreciate ya watching as always. We'll see if the backyard gets much love this season. I've got something brewing for the front that may put the back on the back burner haha. And yes, the finish line is near. Thank you! 👊

Dude I just stumbled on your channel. I love having a top-shelf lawn but at around an acre, it can hurt the wallet. Definitely going to check out a bunch of your videos.
Yeah, an acre makes it tough for sure. Big lawn means big budget. But you can keep it a lot less expensive by keeping it simple. Hope ya find the channel helpful. Appreciate your support.
@@BudgetLawns I’m down in WF. Have a tru-cut 20” reel. Love your page brother. Working on the same here. Sounded like I need to come learn your editing class

Great video as always. Definitely NOT the popular YT Lawn Entertainment message. LOL. But you bring up a good point, What was everyone using before we were told we had to buy specialty products, if not whatever was on the shelf at the big box store?
Thanks so much. You got that right. Not the popular message at all LOL. And also not affiliated with a brand. If they could do it with big box products for so many years, I figure so can I. Appreciate ya watching and commenting 👊!
I just put down the granular Spectracide product today. I wish the Crabgrass Preventer came in a liquid format too. Like you, I rarely have to use a post-emergent now.
Haha. Oh they know how I feel about it. Made a video a little while back that stirred the pot. Say what they want, but it won’t change my mind. No soil test here either. Actually had a rant about it in this video but cut it out last minute. Don’t wanna give them any more fuel for their arguments to fall on deaf ears. Lol. Appreciate ya watching and commenting.
@@BudgetLawns I have been doing my own lawn care for over 30 years. Always had a beautiful lawn. Never have I done a soil test. About a month ago I hurt Ryan Knors feelings with a no soil test comment. Of course I got blasted by him and a few others. 😂 I pretty much have always done exactly what you talk about in this video and it works. Keep it simple.
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Yeah, he blasted you cause he won’t get a sale off of ya for a soil test. That’s garbage that he’d do that and others. Keep doing you!
I noticed you used a drop spreader instead of a broadcast spreader for the preemergent. What is the reason behind that? Better results ,more even application , or just easier?
So happy I found your channel - Bought a house with a small lawn (never having a lawn before) - Not sure what kind of grass it is BUT it must be sturdy - During our monsoon season it comes back so beautiful (zone 7b) - I love your videos & I'm sure with them I'll tackle this little lawn - Also too small for a mower, will a weed eater work just as well?
Congrats on the house and lawn. Glad you found the channel and are finding it helpful. A weed eater would work. I’ve seen some lawns cut with with one and you couldn’t even tell. With that said, I think you’d be happier with a small mower as it takes a lot of skill to “mow” a lawn with a weed eater. Hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching.
Great video, if i had to choose only 4 products since i reel mow bellow half inch my list would be a little different. -1 pre emergent -organic fertilizer 10-2-1 -pgr -Insecticide I would exclude weed and fungus control.
Could help if you have the right fungicide. Most homeowner grade fungicides are not very effective against it but worth a shot. Thanks for watching and adding. 👍👍
Thank you. I only bag when I scalp my bermuda in the spring, to level, or to reset the height of cut. So those 3 times a season. I never bag otherwise. The clippings when mulched are free fertilizer for the lawn. Great question. Appreciate ya!
There are 3 times I'll bag clippings: 1. The first mow of the year. I power rake then mow up all the dead junk and bag it. It doesn't really help the lawn to keep it. 2. If I have an active fungal infection, I'll bag. No need to spread the infection around the yard. 3. If I've let it get too tall and mowing it would cause grass clumps all over. This one is rare for me, but it can happen. I hope this helps you out.
Just found your channel and I really appreciate the straightforward approach to lawn care. I did have a question regarding doseage. When you said 1lb/1000sq ft was that 1lb of fertilizer or 1lb nitrogen?
Can’t wait to make my lawn better than last year! I’m in California, does the triple 10 fertilizer apply to tall fescue too? I didn’t see any of it at my local Home Depot.
when I moved into my new home, i walked the whole yard and pulled out every single weed from the root. took 1 day. filled up many trash bags. 15 years later, it is still one of the best lawns in the neighborhood.
Thank you. Easy way to help the product stick to the weeds. Usually use about an ounce per gallon in the sprayer. Appreciate the question. Thanks so much for watching!
I used the spectricide on my lawn. Killed most of the weeds & clovers. Plus the way it sprayed out was great. Did that about 2 weeks ago. Just mowed the lawn yesterday. Now I'm gonna spray some fertilizer today. suppose to be cloudy & some rain this week into next week. Will see what happens.
I’m just starting the process and I’ll be spraying post emergent treatment bc my lawn is full of weeds. How long after can I add fertilizer. Maybe you can make a video of the process if your lawn is already full of weeds? Thank you
Easy recipe to keep a nice lawn, no doubt!! I was wondering if you use any product for pest/insect control. I have had some issues with grubs in the past.
Indeed it is. Actually just discussed that in my most recent video as a follow up to this one. Had several folks ask me about that. Hope you'll check it out. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. ua-cam.com/video/lQ8Mm9Envy0/v-deo.html
I’m thinking even out here in the pnw I could still follow the once a month fertilization you’re doing here? Would love a simple no brainer way to get fertilizer down
When putting down the 10-10-10 or in my case the 13-13-13; do you water it in before putting down the slow release? Or do you put down the 10-10-10 then the slow release and water it in at the time?
Water it in at the very end. However, I’ve changed my plan for this season. Video will be out this evening. Don’t let that keep you from this old plan though. I’m just trying to save a little extra money. Hope this helps. Thanks.
I fertilize monthly (if needed) May through September. However, most years, I apply no more than 3 rounds of fertilizer. I do mulch my grass clippings which helps to fertilize as well. Thanks for watching. Hope this helps.
I took over a neighbor's lawn that was nearly all weeds. I have killed off a ton of weeds but now I see there is very little Bermuda left. My plan is to lay off the herbicide for now, and just pound it with Milo, and hope that we get a lot of hot weather and rain (Raleigh NC), in the hope that whatever Bermuda is there will start to take off. Sound like a plan?
Sounds like a great plan. Exactly what I did at my old house after killing a ton of weeds. Fed and mowed it and watched it fill in. 👍 appreciate ya watching. Good luck.
@@BudgetLawns right on! I just had new sod put down three weeks ago. I’ve not put nothing down as far as fertilizer. Safe to put down both fertilizer by now? Any recos for new zoysia to get it going.
Here’s a vid I did about new sod care. I’d be following this if I had zoysia. Just like I do for Bermuda. They’re not that different from each other in the big picture. Hope this helps. ua-cam.com/video/z1f2ec2DQvw/v-deo.html
Man it is good to see this. Ive been writing blogs posts about my bermuda yard and how you dont need to spend crazy amounts of money, and how easy it is to keep it looking great. I use the same spectracide post emergent and use their pre emergent and love it as well. New thing i did this year was put down some humichar to help with my soil. Cheers man.
You're so right man. I knew I wasn't the only one out there preaching this. That's awesome! Appreciate ya watching and sharing that. Keep up the great work! Cheers.
Before throwing down that much "P" one should technically do a soil test. While yes P is great for the roots it's also an element that can get over done quickly. As for weed control I too was a spectricide fan up till last season. I switchs over to Q4 Plus (professional stength product, read the label.) and Prodiamine 45 WDG. I find poth of those products are cheaper per app over box store products and I use less of them. My surfactants are either MSO from AG southern or Natural Agument from GCI Turf Academy (this product has a high initial cost due to the other things needed to work, more advanced option). Both of theee products can be applied with a hand can or backpack sprayer. No hose end for those. Oh with crabgrass one needs to know what stage it's in. Most box store products are generally affective upto 2 tillers. Want to keep super simple! Scotts 4 step program. I personally suggest that to my friends family. It takes all the guess work out it. 4 apps a year and your done. The rest is in the watering and mowing practices.
These kinda comments crack me up. They miss the entire point. People watching this don't want all that gobbly gook you just threw out. You can tell you're under the spell of GCI, prolly Doc, Ron, and all the other so-called "experts"...more like expert salesmen. The folks here on this channel want to keep it simple. Yes, there's a place for everything you just mentioned, but a lot of people aren't looking for that. That's the whole point and mission of Budget Lawns...average homeowner lawn care. That's all I am and practice. And what is up with all you people and soil tests and phosphorous (see my latest follow up video to this one where I go into a bit of a rant on this topic: ua-cam.com/video/lQ8Mm9Envy0/v-deo.html)? I'm fully aware of that. Y'all act like that's the only thing hurting the environment in lawn care. Y'all never mention insecticides, fungicides, or any other supplements y'all haphazardly use that cause as much or more damage (which I use no of). Your comment is just another listen to me, I know better than this guy in the video. Sounds like you need to start a channel to see how difficult it is to give everyone tips. You can't be everything to everyone. Every video cannot be comprehensive. I appreciate your comment and you watching, but I'm tired of this same ole song and dance.
Great videos. Travis, I’m in the Florida panhandle and grubs and mole crickets are a constant problem, especially on a Bermuda lawn. Do you have these pests and if so, what do you use?
Thank you. I’ve never really had to deal with pests. But the times I’ve had them, I just let em run their course. I try not to apply any products to the lawn unless it’s for fert or weed control. Btw, where on the panhandle. I lived in pcb for a couple years and worked as a weather anchor and reporter at news channel 7. Appreciate ya watching and the question.
Thanks dude. I got them several years ago at Sam’s club. I don’t know if they still carry the same one but they’re just a simple garage shelf that lets you stack em high or break them down to the heights you want. Sorry I don’t have the name or link. Check Sam’s if you have one. The home office is right down the street from me so we’re in Walmart and Sam’s country. Thanks for watching man.
I assume you are a cool season lawn owner? I have warm season Bermuda so I don’t ever overseed. However, from what I’ve seen from those that do, peat moss seems to be the preferred route for cool season folks. That’s what I’d go with. Hope this helps. Appreciate ya watching.
Tks for the advice Thankyou kindly. Yes I have Perennial Ryegrass, Creeping Red Fescue, and Kentucky Bluegrass. I live in Canada. And yes great videos you have. Great work !!
Upstate SC here. Sounds like I’m basically doing the same thing. I use 10-10-10 PGF Balance in the spring (late March - early May) in small doses every 3 weeks or so. Then switch to 16-4-8 PGF Balance for the rest of the year every 6 weeks in a small dose too. Just spoon feeding. Pre-emergent I use Spectracide too 😂 People stop every week while I’m mowing and ask how I got my lawn like a fairway and they’re shocked it’s not some crazy program. I dump humichar as often as I can afford too.
Travis, two questions if I may, in regard to fertilizer app, you put on the screen 1 lb N/ 1000 sf. Is that total N for both syn AND organic or is it 1lb for each for a total of 2 lbs N ? Also, does the Spectracide granular prevent broad leaf weeds or just crab grass and other narrow leaf weeds?
Found it...again a very straight forward and complete video..how often do you put the pre-emergent? And for a new SOD, based off your other video, I am assuming I should not be using one until its been 3-4 months since the time of installation.
Thank you. Pre-emergent is largely dependent on location and weather. I put an application down in Sept, Jan, and March. That works great here. Yes, wait on new sod. I likely won't put any down in the first year. My sod went down in Dec last year, so I will wait until the Jan application next year. You can put it down in year one, just my preference not to. Hope this helps. Thanks again.
Will the fertilizer part work on st Augustine specifically here in Houston ? No rain and high temperature. My grass is not dormant because I water it every 2 days but it does need some color and not thick like I want it . Ty
I honestly don't know enough about St. Aug. for your area, so I'd be hesitant to give you concrete info. Instead, I'd check this calendar out from the Texas A&M extension office. I use the University of Arkansas extension office for my bermudagrass calendar. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching. aggieturf.tamu.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/24/St.AugustineManagementCalendar2020.pdf
Love the info. I’m in the same boat as you right now and have a brand new Bermuda lawn. Should I hold off on the weed killer until my roots are more established? My sod was laid at the end of Feb.
If you’re gonna use a weed killer, yes. Wait until the roots are more established. They stress the lawn. I won’t use a weed killer at all the first year. Some people do but it’s my preference to not. I like it to be pretty organic in year one and let it do it’s thing. Just the cultural practices will go a very long way. Hope this helps. Appreciate ya watching. Congrats on the new lawn.
Hey I have been watching your videos for a while and I wanted to tell you thank you so much for all your advice I have a really odd mixture of grasses and my yard I have centipede St Augustine and Bermuda thank you for making fertilizer very easy and simple for me to understand I have very sandy soil so it's really hard to find the right type of fertilizer and grass for me to grow the best here thanks again for all your help

Best bang for the buck stuff right there. Use the same post m stuff! Tempted to try your pre m plan this fall and late winter. Poa is a thorn in my side. Does it seem to work on that?
It worked awesome on the poa in my last lawn. Never had a problem with it once I got on my schedule. Before though, it was a nightmare. Thanks for watching brother. Always appreciate ya!
Nice, I was wondering, how much milo do you put down? Would about 5lbs/1000 work to help with greenup and etc.? How many lbs of 10-10-10 do you put down with each app? If I try and use less fertilizer than the bag, I seem to get stripes (ugh). How do I fix the striping as well, do I go a little less and walk closer (2-3ft instead of 5) or do less and walk north-south, east-west?
I go just less than 1lb/k of N on the triple 10 and just a dusting of the organic. I don't measure anything. I set the spreader on a comfy setting that allows the fert to slowly come out and make multiple passes across the lawn in different directions ensuring that it's getting an even coat. I look at what the bag says it covers and adjust according to the lawn size. Hope this helps. Appreciate ya!
SC here with Bermuda. March. What’s the recommended first cutting? 2 medium cuts to get to a scalp cut or just do one scalp cut? When to apply the 3x10’s - before or after the scalping? Thanks

Great video, with that 10-10-10 you indicate less than 1 pound of nitrogen . Do you apply about 10 pounds per 1000 sq ft. With the natural bio solids about how many pounds per 1000 sq feet do you apply ? I have KBG cool season grass and fertilize 4 times a year. Keep up the good work.
Thank you. Appreciate that. I don't ever really measure anything. Just based off the bag and lawn size, yes, it'd come to a little less than 10 lbs/1000 for the triple 10 and even less for the biosolid. I just put a light dusting of it down. Hope this helps. Great video! Subscribed today after you popped up in my feed. Already shared this video with my buddy.
That’s awesome. Thank you. I really appreciate that. Glad to have ya here.

I'm rotary mowing at the new house right now on 2. Thanks for watching.
I noticed you used a drop spreader instead of a broadcast spreader for the preemergent. What is the reason behind that? Better results ,more even application , or just easier?

@@BudgetLawns which is the pre emergent in liquid form?
There’s not a liquid Spectracide pre emergent.
Thank U for the quick response, it's truly helpful
You’re welcome.
Great video, if i had to choose only 4 products since i reel mow bellow half inch my list would be a little different.
-1 pre emergent
-organic fertilizer 10-2-1
-pgr
-Insecticide
I would exclude weed and fungus control.
Thank you. Solid list for such a short cut lawn 👍👍. Appreciate ya watching.
Love it!..Great info!👏👏👍
Thank you. Much appreciated man! 👊👊
I would add a fungicide application in October and again in November if you would like to stop the Spring dead spot.
Could help if you have the right fungicide. Most homeowner grade fungicides are not very effective against it but worth a shot. Thanks for watching and adding. 👍👍
Nice video- when you mow- when do you bag the clippings and when do you leave them on the turf?
Thank you. I only bag when I scalp my bermuda in the spring, to level, or to reset the height of cut. So those 3 times a season. I never bag otherwise. The clippings when mulched are free fertilizer for the lawn. Great question. Appreciate ya!
There are 3 times I'll bag clippings:
Thank you. Appreciate that. Glad ya found me. 1 lb of N per 1000. Thanks for watching.
@@BudgetLawns thanks man!
Can’t wait to make my lawn better than last year! I’m in California, does the triple 10 fertilizer apply to tall fescue too? I didn’t see any of it at my local Home Depot.
It’s a generic garden fertilizer that can be applied to any lawn or garden. I get mine at Walmart or Lowe’s. Appreciate ya watching.
when I moved into my new home, i walked the whole yard and pulled out every single weed from the root. took 1 day. filled up many trash bags. 15 years later, it is still one of the best lawns in the neighborhood.
👍👍 thanks for watching.
Does the Spectricide stop POA? I had POA bad this year.
The pre emergent will prevent it. The post emergent will not kill it. Thanks for watching.
Interesting idea about adding baby shampoo as a surfactant. Never heard that before but want to try it. How much do you typically use???
👍👍 nice work. Thanks for watching.
I’m just starting the process and I’ll be spraying post emergent treatment bc my lawn is full of weeds. How long after can I add fertilizer. Maybe you can make a video of the process if your lawn is already full of weeds? Thank you

Sams club. Love em. Thanks for watching.
Thanks.
How often we have to fertilize ??
Good luck.

Which is first . Fertilizer or weed killer and when I can put the seed

Would you recommend using Pete moss when overseeding and fertilizing in the spring and fall season compared to using regular soil?
I assume you are a cool season lawn owner? I have warm season Bermuda so I don’t ever overseed. However, from what I’ve seen from those that do, peat moss seems to be the preferred route for cool season folks. That’s what I’d go with. Hope this helps. Appreciate ya watching.

You’re welcome. Happy to help. Thank you for the kind words!
When should I apply Spectracide to get pre and post out of it?
Depends on how many weeds you have and when you last applied a pre-emergent. Sometimes you just got to do it asap.
Right on. Sounds like you’ve got a plan that’s killin it 👊. Appreciate ya watching and leaving a comment. Good luck this season!
That's just for the triple 10. I don't count the organic in that. Yes, it controls broadleaf. 👊
@@BudgetLawns great, thanks

Does your system work for St Augustine?
Good question. You need to check on the herbicides as mentioned in the video. They can damage St. Aug. Thanks for watching.

What is the best liquid fertilizer??
I’ve never used liquid so I can’t make any recommendations. Sorry. Thanks so much for watching.
