Thanks mate, enjoyed that. I have recently upgraded from an old Logitech DFGT (with its floppy plastic pedals). I got it 2nd with a P1 wheel. The upgrade is simply night and day from the DFGT, which for what it was was actually a great budget wheel, many, many years ago. The C.S.W. 2.5. Wow, i mean wow! Always wanted a decent rig rather than a wheel clamped to a wobbly desk, which ive put up with for a very, very long time. Funnily enough the guy a bought the CSW from, had just upgraded to a DD1. He said pretty much exactly what you have when i asked him how the upgrade felt. He said the jump to the CSW was huge, but when he jumped to the DD1 did'nt really feel the difference he expected. I guess its like the law of diminishing returns. I used to work in a shop selling high end Hi Fi, v much the same thing the more you spend, the smaller the noticable improvements, unless you downgrade, like a well tuned sub, does'nt seem to make much of a difference at first to you existing front speakers, but you miss it when you turn it off.

I just replaced the venerable DFGT with a CSL Elite + Formula V2 (got used to all the buttons and no other wheel comes close without spending double!). While I know the CSL isn't as smooth or strong as the 2.5, it is so much better than a worn out logitech. I can't be happier, everything feels better. It's good to know that we get our money's worth with these wheel bases, and a DD isn't /too much/ different. Just like you said, the same with speakers.

Hi there, nice review and opinion made. I agree, the step from CSW to DD is much less, than from a cheaper FF to CSW. If weight matters more than precission, the CSW is the pick. I personally would skip the monitors, use the DD and head towards VR with a good motion compensation for the motion rig. (As I did) The difference (even pixels are more present due to short distance) is like watching a BBC documentary about the great barrier reef and snorkeling there. You are no longer in front of a game, you are inside.

I agree, I would certainly go with the DD vs the tripples if I were in that position. The dd1 is far and away the biggest upgrade that I have ever made in sim racing. I find the difference between the dd1 and my csl elite ps4 to be night and day. I would honestly rather have a fixed rig with the dd1 a butt kicker and the monitors.

I select CSW 2.5 to start sim racing, but due to limitation setup (no space for a rig) it's also the best solution for me.
The DD1 or DD2 require a reliable RIG to support it.
For my needs the CSW 2.5 is an high end solution.

this is actually a good ''review'' i guess you could say for the DD1, its really good and improves on everything the clubsport base does but you dont lose any of the feedback with the clubsport, a rumble strip still feels like a rumble strip and bumps still feel like bumps, ive had the DD1 almost a week now id say, coming straight from a csw 2.5 and its amazing, everything is sooo impactful, immediate and sharp, the headroom actually makes the power come through really clean... for example if you put the csw 2.5 to 100 percent feedback and your choice of game to that aswell so your asking for the full 8nm the base offers you will get clipping, it will lose some fidelity. running the DD1 at around 60 percent i get max peaks of around 12nm and it feels clean, no drama, strong but manageable unlike the 2.5 at its full capability its all a bit heavy, messy and not as intended.
with that said the DD1 is very much like playing at 4k, after a week of 4k and going back to 1080p or the csw in this case its clear what shortcomings the 1080p has but... use that for a week and you can adjust to it and enjoy it.
and thats the truth about DD bases in general, they are the pinacle of force feedback but still too expensive to be worth jumping from a csw 2.5 which is very good to begin with. ill keep the DD1 because i can afford to do so but ill probably always recommend the csw 2.5 to anybody that asks because its one hell of a wheelbase for the money.

You can get a good experience with a TX or T300 as well, granted the build quality is nowhere near csw and it is less powerful and smooth, but once set up and once driving it’s good enough, and to me, good enough is where value ends and serious diminishing returns begins. I still use 1080p triple 24inch 60htz monitors (HP 5MS TN panels, total cost £50 each off eBay) with a TX wheel base and CSR Elite pedals and it’s ‘good enough’. I would draw the line at Logitech wheels, I ran a G27 for over 10 years and it’s just not good enough anymore, too light, too notchy and just not anywhere near as good as a TX or T300. My brother has a CSW 2.5, I’ve tried it and yes it’s a bit stronger and a bit smoother but not chalk and cheese by any stretch, not like going from a G27 to a TX, I suspect it’s a similar story going from csw to DD.on top of that, I’ve found some wheels feel better with some games more than others so it does depend on how developers program their ffb, that can make more difference than a wheel upgrade!

    • @paulkelleway8032

You are paying twice the price for 10% more performance, it’s like driving a high end pair of speakers with a £300 amplifier and then going to a 3K high current amplifier, both play the same music, but it just sounds more effortless and refined with the 3K amp.But you can still enjoy music on a £25 blue tooth speaker!... it depends what you want and where your personal diminishing returns threshold ends.

As someone with a terrible back injury and still recovering from multiple surgeries, i appreciate a reviewer mentioning weight/torque considerations! Its a factor for me, and in the many sim hardware reviews of DD bases, its really not a concern for most people. I do wonder what i am missing out on, but for now the CSW is the better rig for me a lighter cockpit as well. also....where did you order those tablet mounts for the csw? Ive seen a few different ones that are compatible, thx.

The tablet isn't mounted to the CSW its just in one of these below linked covers and the cover is screwed to the same mount plate as the the CSW (plywood), I added an angled wood piece to get the angle.

And that is exactly what the marketers want, they want you to keep spending on stuff you really don’t need, it’s called consumerism and it keeps these companies in business. Spending multiple thousands of pounds (excluding the pc and screens) to effectively play a racing game is getting a little bit daft, I guess that’s why the marketers are now calling it ‘sim racing’ not gaming. They are sending kit to influencers and spending loads getting their adverts into games. ‘Consumerism’... marketing to convince people to buy stuff that they really don’t need! HiFi was another one that did the same, they got people to part with thousands for a speaker cable, interconnect etc based on marketing bullshit and ‘some’ people fall for it every time.

@@paulkelleway8032 Horses for courses really. I started sim racing in 2017 with a G27 wheel and a Next Level Racing rig and recently upgraded the whole thing to an 8020 rig, Podium F1 DD1 wheel combination and Clubsport V3 pedals well as an SFX100 motion simulator and I'm very pleased with the result. I do not watch mainstream tv and always mute or switch off ads on Bootube so my decisions are based on what I want for myself. So I would urge others to think for themselves and take responsibility for your own actions and then you may possibly realise that you can free yourself from the "marketing bullshit" and all the other lies and deceit that we are all being subjected to.
