      l wonder if there are enough fans to make it a financial success. l think singapore would be perfect because its somewhere in the asian middle, lots and lots tourists with money go there, as well as cuises would bring more and more of them. but maybe its difficult to find a suitable place for the arena there.

    Bobby, I live in Melbourne, less that 10 minutes from where the proposed location would be at Flemington Racecourse. Melbourne has a population of over 5.4 million and over 9 million people visit this city every year.. Australia has had a fascination with ABBA from very early on and we hosted ABBAWORLD in 2010 for nearly 6 months. I think fans from all over Australia would come to see the show if it was in Melbourne. I can see running successfully in this region.

    As much as I’d love to see the Voyage Concert in Australia, we don’t have the population to sustain a long tenure here & its all about getting a profit on your investment. The Victoria government are cash strapped with cancellation of many previously announced works. I feel Singapore would be the better option, it’s close proximity to many countries in this part of the world, it’s a rich country who could afford the investment. It would be great to see it here in Melbourne, and yes we have a special connection to Abba, but we couldn’t sustain a long run like in London to get a return on the investment. Greetings from Australia BB..

    There have been at least two trips to Melbourne by the Voyage team, with three locations being considered. Flemington is my least favourite, despite the location only being 15 minutes away (traffic can take 1hr) from the CBD. Melbourne is the ABBA fan capital. In the 1970's we had the largest percentage of fans in the world. ABBA has recognised this by including footage of their appearance at our Town Hall in the "I still have faith in you" and the recent Eurovision tribute - Melbourne was there again.
    I am hoping for the Docklands location, as it will be a better location for those weekday shows, lots of hotels and restaurants. Plus I can walk from work 😊 Flemington can handle large crowds in the daytime, however at night that is the real question? I have got stuck in traffic to many times in that area, as it is an old area and little can be done to improve the roads.

    "THEY'RE HERE" is all the headlines needed to read as ABBA touched down in Australia in 1977. Everyone knew who "they" were. Mama Mia, which shot ABBA back to #1 after Waterloo was never to be released as a single if not for a Melbourne based show called Countdown, and it's host Ian 'Molly' Meldrum seeing it's hit potential. RCA caved and released it in Australia only, due to Molly's hounding and public demand. Of coarse it was then released internationally after it was at #1 for weeks here. Melbourne/Australia gave ABBA their second chance, and it worked.

      Australia welcomed ABBA in 1976-77 then dropped them, as reflected in the chart results from late 1977 to 1982, and the low sales of Voyage. The Australian passion for ABBA is more of a self-perpetuating myth.

    • @peteb1206
      @peteb1206 3 місяці тому

      @MiguelGonzalez-ov3xy that's an excellent and highly accurate summation of the Australian experience. Any ABBA fan who was around in the late '70s will tell you what it was like during those years. 55-70 year olds will tell you "I was always an ABBA fan", and it's crap. They weren't. They dropped them like a ton of bricks like everyone else. It was the Eurovision experience all over again. ABBA were highly uncool, and even now they are considered a nostalgia act. Björn Again and BABBA, the prime "tribute" acts, treat the music as cabaret fluff and the band members themselves as a joke. If Voyage were to be a success anywhere else, my pick would be Tokyo.

      When you take a look at the London audience half of the visitors are there for great entertainment. It's partying, people are continually running around fetching drinks from the bar that is open throughout the whole show.

    Hi B.B.
    When you said about Benny wanting to go to Australia on NewsNight I saw that , for the reason that during the early ABBA years it made ABBA carry on. When it struggled to carry on in the UK. This puzzled me ! Why because the early ABBA years music is because of the reason why I like ABBA myself.. What I do think what might be a struggle , is that Agentha is scared of flying long distances wherever it might be to go to the opening day of the arena. Even though the past she did travel the world. It was the flight going to America during a storm , that made her scared. If she don't turn up at the arena. It might disappoint people. Anthony UK.

    Since the preparation time for this show, even though it would already be the second theatre, is still reportedly 1 1/2 to 2 years, I think the ABBA Voyage team does not want to lose any more steam after the 50 year Waterloo anniversary. If they wait until 2027 to open the second arena, people might have cooled off considerably compared to today...
    So my guess would be that this article is not necessarily about Melbourne getting the ticket within a few weeks, but more about the Voyage team wanting to make a final decision about the next location within the next few weeks. To not lose any more time. The article just colored this news in the Melbourne colors as Melbourne is one of the candidates. But I do not think it means Melbourne is the front runner.

    I live in Australia, invest in musical theatre and saw ABBA Voyage last week in London. ABBA was huge in Australia 40 years ago and Australia was influential in ABBA’s global success. The problem with any show in Australia is the high cost of mounting it, Australia’s small population and the lack of the constant flow of tourists that London benefits from. Magic Mike came to Australia, admittedly during the later stages of Covid, and could not make money and closed early. And that was with a $25 million sophisticated temporary venue similar to the ABBA Voyage venue. I would love it to come, but London took 2 years to recoup the initial investment of £150 million. Australia would not cost that much, as the cost of the technology is in the £150 million, but it could cost A$100 million, if the cost of setting up the most recent production of Wicked is anything to go by.

Big problem!! Having seen Abba live in Sydney 1977 and London 1979 and London again in 2022 at Voyage and As someone who lives in Melbourne I would be there monthly.!! 🤞🤞🤞 bring it on!! Flemington Racecourse is widely agreed to be the - or one of the - premier horse racing venues in the world with capacity for over 100,000 meaning it is very well serviced by both public transport (train 10 minutes from the city, tram also) and car parking. I don't see how Australia makes sense. It's population is less than half of England's. And it is more difficult to draw enthusiasts from outside its borders. It's easy for Europeans to get to London. Other than the Australian population, additional patrons will have more difficulty getting there. I love the sentiment. Australia was crucial in ABBA becoming a world wide band. I just don't think it will work.

      The Voyage production team would now know the proportion of locals and tourists visiting Pudding Lane. It’s now a business so I guess one thing is to find suitable real estate or space to build another arena in a place where you have access to public transport to hotels and other infrastructure. At the same they hire companies to collect data of the number of potential visitors. It only makes sense if enough people are traveling to the location etc. this might take some time to evaluate. That’s why for instance I always questioned Singapore. Will people from South Korea go to Japan to see Voyage or vice versa ? London was an adventure a dare they took, an investment a huge risk. Now it’s a business…
