This obsession with beauty is killing people, I'm a 19 afro latina girl and I've been so obsessed with looking pretty all the time that there was days that I didn't want to go out cuz I didn't look pretty enough, I even thought that I wasn't worthy living because of how I looked.
Sameeee.. how did you move past that?
@kelddsrx I am still struggling with that ngl
I'm struggling with that too, but from what I can see..I think your beautiful..and that's how I honestly think of you..with or without make up..but I understand exactly how you feel..you're definitely not alone..like I said..I'm struggling with my insecurities too..so afraid to go outside because I feel ugly on the outside..even with make up on..I then feel insecure about my weight..it doesn't help that I feel as though, I probably won't find love because of how I think I look😮💨 I usally try to fight it..telling myself that I'm beautiful..but other times I'm discouraged again..
I always remind myself that life is short and that it's important to focus on friends, family, experiences.. all our bodies change eventually and we only have this one body that keeps us alive and gives us this one chance called life. Focus on why people love and wanna be with you.. probably not because of your looks but because of so many other things. These thoughts help but I always end up basing my self worth on my looks and then feeling really bad on those days I don't look that great.
I've been struggling with that for 10 years.
Wanting to hide forever , crying when I see a photo of me, wanting plastic surgery from the age of 12.
When I explain this to my relatives they laugh and tell me it's not a real problem.
To be honest, I know it probably won't change so I'm trying to find other things that make me a valuable person, and find happiness in my passions .
Trying not to look in the mirror and ignore my disgusting reflexion ...
But I'm alive 'cause I'm more than my body.
Comparison is the thief of joy.
Honestly, this videos make me feel gorgeous for being normal and natural 😬 I’m proud to look human and not stupid and uncanny
THIS
Indeed!!
For real… I’m happy I look human and not like an alien doll…
It’s not gorgeous to call someone stupid, btw. This girls just mentally unstable due social media, insecurities, low self esteem and so on, the fact that it’s made you think that you somehow better then them speaks a lot about you
That's what I also thought.
"Dystopian".. Somehow that's the word coming to my mind!
True. And anytime I think about Palestine I remember we’re living in basically an active hunger games
@@aliairvingwait, you have a point... It's like we're the capitals and having unnecessary problems while they're people in the world who literally fights to live
As an 18 year old Puerto Rican guy, I appreciate the commentary and editing.
Thanks for tuning in!
This is why I like taking pictures with no filters and embrace my own beauty, showing my acne and acne scars. And also taking a break from social media as well.
Me too!
Me too, but I discovered lately that my phone has a built-in beauty filter installed in the (frontal) camera. I thought my skin looked very smooth but I checked "beautify" and it was set to zero, I finally found the other filter a week later and it's creepy how much it changed my perspective of my face even though I didn't want to edit it to begin with
Haha you're not beautiful
I look better IRL than in photos or videos, edited or not 😂Somehow cameras usually change my face to look worse.
As a half European half East Asian I was always praised everywhere by parents for my "long legs" and how (unhealthily) thin I was, I've moved now. I was happy with it as a kid but now its just painful to hear "I wish I could look like you" and even parents using me as an example for their kids, when I was literally going to a doctor for being too thin! I'm older now, gained a normal amount of weight, still admitedly affected by their standards, istg I'm eating 2 small meals a day and exercising daily idk why I just want to look thin again
fr tho, I'm still in the Asian community where I live now, all the Asian moms I know, including my own, own a bunch of beauty cam photoshop apps which they use for every picture, and talk how they hate how ugly they look without the filter, and then laughing ;-;
Girl make sure you eat enough nutritious food! Thin shouldn't mean beautiful, healthy and happy should... I am happy you got better and hope you will fully move on from these crazy ideals
Wowwww flxing are we now? (But do make sure to eat god food and exercise
@@lord_explosion_murderer my mom keeps calling me fat this week😭😭😭
@@kaylie.raichel.aiko. she is half white and her white genetics made her fit into the colorist beauty standart in asia 😢😯
Feels intensely dystopic...
It's giving Hunger Games capital fashion
Every now and then I find myself thinking "I'm glad I grew up without that!" or "I'm glad that wasn't around when I was a kid"...but stuff like this is so much worse because it effects and affects EVERYONE, regardless of age (or sex or race or any other factor). You can't ignore it, you can't be too old for it. It is there, it is unavoidable, and it is only getting worse. I took a selfie with my friends 8-month-old baby and it smoothed her face! My phone actually had the nerve to "improve" the skin of a baby! It was a built-in setting I didn't even know about!
That's sick, I can't believe that exists
Yes ! when i was seeing the new Phones I take a photo and it’s filtered by ai ! Imagine that without any apps or effects
this scares me so much
I think getting off of social media and touching grass is the only option now o7
Truly Ive told many of my friends that struggle with body issues to get off of social media and to really look at real people in real life. Theres so much natural beauty in the world and in people.
I’ve come back to China recently to visit family and this has shocked me so much. The use of beauty filters is so normalised now it’s actually crazy. Parents even use face tuning apps on their very young children, exposing them to these toxic beauty standards and showing them a “better” version of themselves at such a young age. When I took photos with family, I couldn’t even recognise my face in the camera, and they refused to take photos without the face tune, saying it was a NECESSITY. Girls in china wear such extreme makeup that only really looks good on camera with extreme nose and face contour, foundation ten shades lighter than their actual skin tones and eye makeup they enlarges their eyes to the point of creepiness. Everyone has the same face, and it made me feel disconnected and insecure. This is a real issue but none of the people here seem to realise it.
It scares me honestly they don't even look normal or like human
Asia itself is so toxic. From education to job market to beauty. Its no longer humane. Im saying this as an asian. Makes me admire the unfiltered westernness
correction: these type of beauty standards exists in East Asia, not all of Asia. if you visit Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Iran, Syria, you will not find these type of crazy standards. these are exclusive to China, Japan and specially Korea
Exactly asia is a big and diverse continent. Asia does not mean just east Asia like korea, china, japan, etc.
fr 💀
Didn't she say east asia the whole video?
She literally said east Asia constantly - just say you didn’t watch the video 🤪
I would say Japan is less crazy in all these. They have different styles.
Korea is plastic surgery
China is filter and deceptive makeup
The fact my ex is always saying they have such a nice body & faces when we all know is not real still blows my mind 😂
This was an insightful, horrifying, and harrowing watch. 10/10
I worry for the younger generation coming up in the world behind mine (I'm 30, for a reference point). Even though I don't always love my looks, I at least can appreciate that these things aren't attainable normally or even healthy in a lot of cases, but the younger group...they're just bombarded with this stuff constantly. I worry for them, and I hope we can help them navigate it as healthily as possible. Your body is your body. Does it have curves, some wrinkles, some cellulite? Excellent, you are certified as a human, congratulations! I hope we can help both my generation and the younger ones behind mine to understand that as long as you're human, you're beautiful as you are, there will always be someone who will find you desirable, and, most importantly, that being desirable is not solely based on your looks at all. It sounds cliche but it's a cliche for a reason: beauty doesn't stop at the surface, and self love isn't about what you look like.
@JuicyUTTP bro what 😭
the more im off social media the more i like myself. When i was in Japan I felt so self conscious and huge in comparison... :/
I love ur content... i actually went thru this years ago with just makeup. i started to HATE the "raw" me without makeup so much that i would often feel depressed after taking my makeup off at the end of the day........ i would even cry sometimes. after awhile, i decided to lay off the makeup for awhile (which i didn't even really enjoy that much in the first place), so that i could re-learn to love my actual face again.... i think makeup is AMAZING when it's fun and you still like urself. but that wasn't what i had been using it for. and that made me really sad. i want to love ME. even if the rest of the world doesn't think i'm pretty. cuz ur ABSOLUTELY right when you say that none of this shit matters😆. but, in the best way. nowadays, i use mostly a tinted moisturizer, mascara and a little highlighter and if i'm feelin froggy, some eyeshadow. lol. and i don't hate my own face anymore. so i call that a win. but that's just me. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for making this video. THIS is the kinda stuff i wish we would talk about way more. Sending 💖

Makeup is fun for artists. It's like paint. I personally love my own face, but if I want to look more intimidating, I put on eyeliner.

I always love your insights and you’ve been such an inspiration to me this past year, thank you so much ♡︎
NO WAY SHE LIKED MY COMMENT IM CRYING😭
...didnt she just say being ugly is a good thing cause you get SA'ED less?...
wait lol she deleted my response or what?!?!?
My ex girlfriend would always use these types of filters on snap chat and I always tried to remind her she didn't need them yet she always talked about how she liked the filters. 🤷
I dont think she ever believed me when I said she was beautiful, idk
I'm living for these videos- and I think it's interesting how people denounce both filters and a natural photo online. At the end of the day I personally think it's about making sure you're happy with yourself & practicing self-care but not self-indulgence. Love the critical perspective you take on beautification tools & thank you for sharing!🎉❤
it is crazy that we're inducing mass delusions about how people actually look
I was literally just thinking about a video i saw a few years ago about ppl in the states getting plastic surgery to look like beauty filters from Snapchat.
It's fascinating that this is a thing considering how completely inhuman the filters make people look. It's the easiest aspiration because it can be achieved by an app
@JuicyUTTPWHAT
Not even joking guys… one day I was laughing while in my bathroom and saw my smile and I realized how pretty I was! I started wondering why I was so insecure about my face shape lol. Although I still don’t like my pimples… I take care of my skin RELIGIOUSLY and I still break out, but I feel pretty ☺️
That's so Wholesome and you are 100% right. You are beautiful and you deserve to smile when you see your reflection, like the Queen you are !
hi what does it mean you take care of your skin religiously?
@@kuolich287 To simply put, I make sure to do my skin care routine everyday even if I don't shower or brush my teeth
It's just an expression! It means she is consistent, disciplined or methodical in taking care of her skin.
I loved the ending.. the confidence that will give you the inner peace you don’t need anyone else to see ❤
I feel so bad, now I know I need to go outside more and tell everyone there gorgeous. Ain’t no one need a filter even if you got acne or eyebags that just means your human and beautiful!!
I deal with real life body dysmorphia. The only time I ever use a filter tool is when I want to look less sleepy in a photo 😅 I do not alter my face, my skin, or my body. Living in the real world as a Black Filipina who is tall and curvy is complex enough! I’ve seen these video and makeup filters, and they really trip me out. I stay away from that kind of content whenever I see it pop up when I’m looking to try different makeup looks or hairstyles. I try to find creators who don’t rely heavily on filters to create, because that’s how I’m tryna be out here, online and off! I found this video extremely validating. I’d rather work on myself in real life and show THAT in my content 💕
yeah it's all fun and dandy while you are inside the app... but you can't fool people irl 😄 😭 it's so cringe with those asian filter trends. it's SO funny, the filter that gives you incredible long skinny legs😄 ..... excuse me are you a cartoon? lol
it's crazy how it's becoming more and more real though 😭
fr, it's giving one piece body type lol
Already slim girls using apps to become even slimmer is crazy
i love your video and how you explore all sides of the story
Btw Zoe your beautiful, like I never see anyone on your level it’s crazy
I am 18 years old Indian girl .165 cm and 50 kg so basically my bmi is around 18.3
My mom calls me fat because my thighs are fat saying they look like baby elephants
Honestly its not just social media but society in general that influence your insecurities
your average/healthy bmi for an Indian ranges from 18.5-22.9
I am already an underweight right now,my friend same height weighs around 43 kg and she's proud of that (she's heavily influenced by east asian beauty standards ,I was too but then I realized I am beautiful they way I am and that instead of getting influenced by ppl who I have 0 matching traits with except same human genes I should focus more on the ppl around me who compliment my natural beauty. I am a lot happier now but yeah I will exercise a bit to lose all this belly fat😂)
Does your friend even have her period, this can't be healthy for teenager becoming young adult
The only thing I will do is coffee grounds to improve my eyebags, my skincare(basic) and losing bellyfat(Anti-Ana/Anti-Mia)but I do not shame ppl with these conditions already having them it’s just not a good way to lose weight it’s the most disturbing way
Hi! Do not by any means listen to your mother - you're coming of age and you'll slowly realize that you don't really need to act on other people's opinion of your life and health because you're the only one inhabiting your body, and you will hopefully do that for very very long.
Gaining fat naturally in your thighs is great, health-wise, it means your fat is getting stored in a rather ideal and typical place for a woman.
Fat in women plays a pretty important role in our metabolism and hormonal regulation. I'm talking energy, stress, hunger, and obviously female hormones. Google it if you want to know more!
Your mom's generation listened to a lot of fat-shaming propaganda that science has since debunked! There was an agenda behind that, to sell certain kinds of foods... I'm frankly sorry for her.
Of course excess fat can be an issue, but you're literally underweight, that has nothing to do with you.
Take care and think of these things for the long run! You're seriously not looking at the final you when you're a teenager.
Outrageous title😭
omg, this is scary! We all know that what you see in magazines and on tv are not real, we know there's photoshop and editing but the whole body/face tuning that East Asia has is on another level! There were SO many times where I'd see a picture of the "doujin" makeup on pinterest and tried to do that make up on myself only to fail, thinking I'm just not good at putting on makeup but now I'm pretty sure it's just a filter! I mean there are people who are really good at makeup (I think, not really sure anymore lol). Anyway thank you SO much for shining the light on this! I can give up on trying to apply the filter with irl makeup!
wow, thank you for motivating and inspiring to grow and improve youself. love your content
Your vase in the background got my anxiety high
Thank you! I thought I was the only one.
One thing I noticed is that many underground Japanese idols heavily edit the pictures they post and when others take pictures of them (like fans or when a concert ends) they cover their faces with their hands
This is the case in entire East Asia not just Japan 🤣
I don't post myself on social media often but when I do I make the decision to not use any filters because I used to have super low self esteem and I think it would be bad for my mental health to only see a "beutified" version of myself, I remember as a kid I didint even realize snapchat filters altered your face and shit and would get super sad because I didint look as good in real life as I did when I took silly pictures with snapchat
Those filters are freaking nightmares 😱Body and face dismorphia is an epidemic omg. The worst part is that all of these extreme filters make people look actually ugly and they can't see it.
"Use their body to bend metal or concrete-" thus, the "reality-bender" is born!! 💀🌟
Looking splendid as ever❤❤❤
Girl the long form was EEXCCCELLENT!
omg i used meitu in elementary school as well! i also showed my mom back in the day and she LOVED it, used for a few years as well 😅
This video also points out that not everything you see on social media has to be real, i remember going through the "Douyin" side of Pinterest and I saw a bunch of images of beautiful Chinese girls, so beautiful that it almost looked like AI. It made 14 year old me feel so insecure. I had no idea that those pictures were heavily edited, I became so insecure to a point where i would cover mirrors just so i wouldn't have to look at myself and feel disappointed, the idea of taking pictures also seemed like a nightmare to me. The chase for beauty is really toxic in today's world, especially in Asia.

Great video, Zoe💜
Im glad I have good parents and siblings who mad me feel beautiful that I felt I didn't need beautifying apps or make up
As a Chinese I’ll say the standards there for the sake of everyone
-small face
-big eyes
-slim
-white as a paper
-plump rosy lips
-THIGH GAPS IS NEEDED
-small calvis
-small thighs
-small waist
-breasts has to be the size of a tennis ball or basketball
Basically an anime character anatomy
More people need to see this video instead of another portion of filtered beauty content. We're living in an illusion
This is one good reason I'm not on social media anymore. I just don't feel like scrolling through literal lies. I miss when we shared experiences and related to each other, not this "I need validation for how I don't actually look."
Zoe I freaking love your videos, have you ever thought about making a podcast?
Both Chinese and Korean beauty standards are scary to be honest
Excellent video! Thanks for sharing ❤
I’ve wondered in some of your other videos on whether the West is catching up with east Asia regarding these… standards and it seems that the answer is yes.
And as a longtime anime fan I remember when real life big eyes were mostly a meme but it becoming real really freaks me out for some reason.
Your videos are so awesome. I just found you after going down the rabbit hole of Gen Alpha stuff and I love your content. Smart, funny, engaging, (and of course beautiful 😎😎). Keep it up! 😁😁

the vase on the edge of the table took my whole attention in this video haha
I was 16 when I realised the reason none of the pupils photographs on the walls had acne was because the school had been photoshopping it out. I only realised because I had a photo of me on the wall with completely clear skin when I knew I was having a huge breakout at the time. They did not ask if photoshopping was okay. I mean what teenager does not have spots at some time.
I love your Mandarin!
These guys need spongebob. In particular when he says "Im UGLY and Im PROUD"
Why did I crack up when she mentioned one peice😂😂and honestly they dont look pretty rather creepy to me like is that even possible💀💀
its a big reason im not on many social media. i have never had big issue with my appearance, but everything has this natural filter. even what should be a colour filter, squishes my chin and nose down. it makes me feel uncomfortable. because its like, this is how its preffered. even if i like myself, i find myself to play into it, because, i do find i like myself like that more. but its dangerous, because its not real. so i look in the mirror with a new knowledge, if i could just shave some of these things down, if i could be LESS, i would be worth MORE.
which is not true. i love the human form, and its sad we all feel this pressure.
I am currently in Vietnam and oh my gosh the people are all so pretty and lovely in real life. When I exchanged my Instagram with some people and saw their profiles, it really shocked me to see their completely different online persona. In some Hotels I got skin whitening shower gel and the Models on billboards Just don't look human. I hope somehow this extreme trend in south east asia just dissapears..
Brilliant vídeo ❤
It's true that asian beauty standard is brutal. Like in India having fair skin and curvaceous body is the standard and sometimes people are bullied if they don't fit this. Even their own parents sometimes pass harsh and rude comments.
Omgggggggg,im the first one to comment!!!!love you zoe❤
For people with Xiaomi phones: I discovered a couple months back that with the update came these beauty filters, I turned them all to the max to make funny pictures to laugh with my cousins but they really make you look like Chinese Models x Slenderman.
Btw, if your photos look too smoth lately, the auto-smooth is turned on automatically, you have to go to settings to turn it off manually, this is on top of the "beautify" filter straight from the phone camera
People are afraid of themselves.
Damn, don’t people notice the so obvious alterations, are people so oblivious to it?
14:25 TRUE!! I was also in elementary school when I discovered beauty cam and apps like such and at first it was just for fun but as time progressed, I started to become more and more insecure. Thankfully, my country banned that app, and I quitted social media.
i always looked up to the body type of franky and kaido in one piece. hope to achieve it in the near future ☝🏽🗣️

They look pretty good on you though I think they look good on you too I think you should get some of that in a couple weeks I don’t think they would have a bad time I just want a couple weeks of it to go with the right size for me I don’t know if you want to get it 😊
Anime bodies and anime faces = This just reminded me of Jessica Rabbit - who is a 'glamourous' human like cartoon character from the 1988 movie ' Who framed Roger Rabbit?'... and guess this....she was apparently Roger Rabbit's wife in the movie! 🤣Even cartoon characters get married!😟😳🤣
...But actual humans have a more challenging time getting and staying 'happily' married! 🥺😔
It's huge problem in the word now but in the end we still live in reel word we can see the reality of each other 😊
Love you always froom morocco ❤

I absolutely love how our natural queen ShaSha SooSoo was brought up LOL
Well as an Indian this hit home too. Fairest skin, no pores, no dark circles, thin body et etc... when will those stop 😐
I LOVE Zoe but have to say I always have mixed feelings about this “embrace your natural beauty” message coming from an actual natural beauty. Don’t want to sound bitter, but like…it would take filters upon filters for me to look as cute. Idk. It’s weird. Please keep making these commentaries though, Zoe, I really do find them so fascinating and well-researched!
The beauty of people doesnt live in their skin, it lives in their hearts. I understand what you are saying but you need to be kinder to yourself. I used to think I was ugly because I used to compare myself to every other person, I wanted to be someone else. Beauty is in almost every person ive met its just that beauty isn't uniform like social media and magazines tell you it is.
@@Tiny_Koi thank you, I do understand that. And I appreciate your kind words! There are many aspects of my appearance that I’m really happy with, but it’s those few big issues I have that keep me from being 100% content with myself. I do also try to be as kind and “beautiful” on the inside as I can, but of course that is its own thing and even though it’s even more important, and I totally get what you are saying, it’s ultimately unrelated to physical appearance. Idk. Maybe I’m naive to a bigger truth that will set me free one day but I doubt it so long as I have to keep living in a society 🥴
Nah it just seems to me that your face doesn’t fit your OWN beauty standard. That doesn’t mean you’re not pretty. My sis is like that.
@@andromedamessier3176 yeah, I can see that. I think you’re right. But… man it sucks since my opinion is the one that matters most 😅
I remember meitu from my teenage years, around 2014. I used it A LOT on my photos cause despite being latina I got bullied for being to white (no, not racism, people were just assholes to me) so I tried to fit at least on the asian beauty standard. it fucked me up to the point I don't post pictures of myself online anymore and I fear for future generations dealing with the constant editing and being chronically online

I never had the birds and the bees talk or the period talk since I was only 11 at the time I used toilet paper for months
As a 5'5 asian.. the last time i was 45 kilos was while i was in ill health and suffering from anemia, now I'm 49 kilos and my health is better
wow :( im the same height as you and im 65 kilos, how do you do it?
As long as you use this kind of filters and cameras, you'll want to don't show off yourself , don't want to live in a real life and judge yourself for not being beautiful so it leads to stress and other health issues. That's why I think being thankful for who and how you are is the best way to LIVE IN THE REAL LIFE because in this way, you don't judge yourself and spend more time with your family, friends, favorite activities, sport s and so on.
I have something to tell you if you are reading this.

I can tell by my own example.
When I was 12, I used the first filter app on my phone. They were especially popular back then, so everyone did it, so did I.
What did it lead to - then I got so used to all these digital masks (especially on Instagram) that I couldn't perceive my face without them. Therefore, now, for three years now, I have been trying to reduce any filters on my phone (unless it's color saturation) in order to learn to love my face the way it is. So yes, this culture really scares me
