  • In the beginning of 2022, several of the largest United Methodist Churches departed the denomination. Many churches have been left wondering what does that mean for their smaller church. In this video, Dan Dalton discusses why these churches left and what that means for your church.
If you or your church wants to leave the United Methodist denomination and are interested in hiring our firm, please call our office at (313) 859-6000 or email Dan Dalton at ddalton@daltontomich.com to set up a consultation.

A friend of mine, a former Methodist told me the church has always been too "watered down"...guess he got tired of that....

I am afraid that the Methodist Church has gone too far away from the teachings of Wesley. The leadership is very liberal, and there are many churches that still preach the gospel.

When you stop believing scripture and are actively aiding and abetting sin it's time to go....I'll become orthodox

I was asked why I’m a Wesleyan Protestant. My answer was ‘because I’m not Orthodox’.

Very interesting word terminology, "Is your pastor, He or She in line with the congregation?"
I thought the Pastors are to be in line with the scriptures. Stay connected to the Vine.
    Hum. 🤔

Our pastor never says a word about this situation. Not one word spoken concerning this split. We must ask him questions before he makes a comment. And his comments are vague. Like he is riding the fence on everything. I often wonder if he is perhaps a wolf in sheep's clothing.

@@marywhaley4675 When your pastor acts more like a politician than a pastor or the Bible is clear and he is not, it’s time to fire him, he has failed to qualify for his position per 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9. I have been involved with Methodist churches in the past, though I have never attended one, however, my wife and I had to leave our church a couple of years ago because of gross doctrinal error. We’ve been attending an independent fundamental Baptist church and, though it was a culture shock initially, it has been a huge blessing spiritually. We have grown so much in our faith and walk with the Lord, I don’t think I could ever even visit another evangelical church again. It is such a breath of fresh air to have a pastor that actually cares about our souls.

@@chriseller8029 I learned more in the Baptist churches and Moody broadcasting network than any other church ever. I am trying to shake up my childhood Methodist church out of their long slumber. They are so Biblically illiterate it is disturbing. Old people who don't understand basic salvation. Thank you for your comment.

@@marywhaley4675 My situation was very similar. After decades in various evangelical churches, I finally began to see the writing on the wall. I’ve known longtime attendees at some churches that wouldn’t even accept the deity of Christ; so they had no problem with major doctrinal error, but if you said anything negative about the Beatles they would blow their top. I guess I got so used to the lack of wisdom in my elders that it became white noise. What really concerned me, though, was when I had a family member run for a local political office. What I found was that, not only were most pastors deeply indebted to the government and political parties, they ran their churches the same way a candidate would run a political campaign. Since this is expressly forbidden in Scripture and prostitutes the church irrecoverably, I steer clear of these pastors. At that point, there may be individuals that will eventually accept the truth, but that church is a lost cause and, in most cases, so is the pastor. Again, I’ve never attended a Methodist church, but from my understanding of their teachings, the gender debate is just one problem in a long line of bad doctrine. This seems to trace back to their unwillingness to accept the Bible as the final authority on all matters within the church and in their personal lives. If I understand correctly, they do not believe in the inerrancy of Scripture and so adhere to “prima scriptura” instead of the biblical “sola scriptura.” That is not to say that individuals within the church necessarily agree with the views of the leadership, but this is one issue where disagreement means that there can be no fellowship. They are irreconcilable and if a pastor tries to ignore it and bring everyone together at the expense of doctrine, he is pushing ecumenicism, which is an unbiblical form of unity.

Those leaving UMC should consider becoming Biblical Christians, because in doing so they can worship God at any time and in any place (John 4:23-24). No denominations or their buildings needed.

The churches that are leaving are homophobic. The split is about LGBTQ exceptence. They wouldn't have to leave if they would love and welcome everyone into the church. Stop try to do God's job. It's up to God to judge people. We are not supposed to be a respector of persons. We are not to guard the gates of Heaven. We are to go into all the world and preach the Gospel to everyone.

Not true. There are many reasons for leaving, and it is not as simple as you make it. The wonderful thing is that a person can go to any church that fits their beliefs.

I suggest you read your Bible about what God has to say about sexual sin and all sin for that matter. The United Methodist Church has become nothing more than a social justice organization that puts their priorities of right and wrong above God's. The church I attend will be voting to leave the denomination tomorrow morning. It's way overdue and I suspect it'll pass with a super majority.

The main reasons churches are leaving are because the Methodist Church has gone too far away from the teachings of Wesley. New denomination will go back to preaching the gospel.

Many modern Methodist churches want to be less Wesley and more like Evangelist. Wesley believed all is all, dress more like Quakers, serve the poor, visit jails, and interpret the Bible in light of their place within the Bible. Methodist ministers who want their church to split are using Lgbtq as convience to control whole finances and move towards Evangelical agenda.
