- Today we are taking a look at a second Cine lens from Irix. Back in early 2020, we looked at the Irix 45mm Cine lens and today we shall review the newest member of that family, the Irix 30mm T1.5 Cine lens.
We worked with this lens for several weeks, particularly with our Sony A1 where we also tested it while shooting 8K and we shall post a separate short 8K footage video with several clips alongside this review.

Dang. Such a thorough review. Well done! Just posted a review of this lens myself and shot a little horror sequence with it. I was really impressed with the image quality. Will definitely be buying more Irix.
Nice review!
Solid review covering all the bases. Better sharpness and contrast below T2.8 would be ideal, but at this price? I'm sold on adding this to my cine lens collection. Thank you!
Thanks for the detailed review specially sharpness and contrast, owned irix 45, need lenses 30-35 which can be sharp in full open t1.5 up to 2500 usd
That intro song is 🔥!
does anyone really care about corner to corner clinical sharpness in a cine lens? It's not really a thing we worry about is it? It seems like some of the tests you are running would be more important to a stills photographer than a videographer. Stopping down a bit to get better contrast is relevant but I can't see a reason to stop down to T/4 or T8 to get clinical edge to edge sharpness, it's just not practical or necessary. Motion blur with video makes the quest for razor sharpness pretty useless.
It's a valid point. I agree that center sharpness is probably more important for video (although there might be specific applications where you will want corner to corner sharpness - when fixed on a tripod probably).
We test all of the lenses we get in the same way - it took us years to come up with the exact methodology and we are still refining some of the aspects. For example, I really liked the way the breathing test we did on this one but I still think that there might be a better way to demonstrate this. The CA test is great, the Vignette is good, flare is OK, sharpness is fine although testing anything beyond 90mm requires some logistics on our part (and with very fast tele lenses there is always a risk that one side of the image will be out of focus - which is a huge problem we could never solve), close up sharpness is something that we are working on and next year we will complete our close up test rig with some new tiny targets (it took forever to find the right parts).
Things that are difficult to measure in the lab using the gear that we have in a repeatable way are image stabilization (we looked at all sorts of vibrating surfaces - I don't think that they really replicate hand movements well) and to some degree AF (we do some pretty simple test and we even start testing low light AF but to be honest it is more of a subjective test after we use the lens because AF can fail in all sorts of conditions - for example, the Sigma 24-70mm that we tested last year - the review never published for other reasons - had fast but not accurate enough AF on moving subjects - this is very hard to test in a lab).
Thanks for the review. I'm currently looking into lenses in this price range. Right now it seems the Irix set, the Meike set, the Rokinon set and the DZO Vespids are the options. I have the Rokinon set and it's great bang for the buck, but they get very soft at the extremes and have CA issues. In ideal conditions, they can deliver very good images, but I've learned the hard way that you just can't open those irises up too much.
This particular review of this Irix lens was not inspiring me to invest in this set. The test images exposed some considerable problems, though the actual b-roll footage looked decent. I really don't like these particular flares, though it is very subjective.
I'm leaning toward the Meike set now, though it's not really a full set yet. I like how they are sharp (or reasonably sharp) at all T stops, but not super sharp in a clinical way. None of the lenses in this price range get me the buttery bokeh I want, so that's a bummer. Once you use a higher end cine lens, it's hard to tolerate the clunky bokeh of this level of lens.
I certainly agree with you that once you use those $3-$5K and above glass it is hard to look back at these ~1K lenses. I also have to say that our testing, although comprehensive isn't always relevant to all forms of video and filmmakers as each might have its own special requirements and needs. It's much simpler to review stills lenses in this respect.
I'm really impressed with these lenses from the research I've done. Outstanding sharpness and bokeh at T2 is more than enough for cinematography purposes. The only thing holding me back from buying their whole set is not knowing if they will fill out the longer range after 45mm.
I don't have specific info but based on what they have done so far - I am pretty sure they will.
I think a 21mm and 65mm would be fantastic future additions and keep with their "differentness"
People in the know indicate that they will
@@stu9000 Indeed a new lens announcement in this series is imminent. Hopefully, we can review it as well later this year.
@@IddoGenuth I was right 21mm let's go!
What alan wrench do I need to remove the 1/4 foot? I have alan wrenches out the ass but none as small as what is needed for the foot. It's definitely an inconvenience when fitting it on any rig just because of that foot.
M... good question I never tried to actually remove it. I'll try and remember to test it in the studio tomorrow.
