    Have had this lens for a couple weeks now and its awesome. Now they have a 21mm, all they need is something in the 70-90 range and they'll be a serious competitor.

    When I change aputure from open to 2.8 nothing happens. But hoping all the way to 11 and wait a few seconds activates the aputure. After that it's working quite fast. Is this normal? Do you have to wear it in a little to get the Iris blades to operate as they should?

      The cinema glass has a manual aperture. Do you by chance have the stills glass version?

    • @joelarvidsson

      @@ScottBalkum No I got the cinema version and it's manual. That's why I'm confused why it's so slow to honor my wheel changes.

    • @joelarvidsson

      You would think manual would mean instant as it's no electronics that can delay. I shoot the screen and show it if it helps.

      @ScottBalkum  2 роки тому

      @@joelarvidsson yea, that doesn’t add up. If you take the lens off and look through it, do you see the blades moving when you adjust from 1.5?

      @@ScottBalkum They have my phone video of the issue. And you can hear the sound of when it "activates" even thoe that world is not the best since it's analog. I still think the apeture blades get stuck in each other's and when the spring loose it makes the sound I hear. I like send it back early next week.

    I’ve spent 2 weeks with the RF copy of the lens on the raptor now and wow! The irix lenses are great. I’m quite excited for the announcement of the new lens tomorrow as depending on the focal length, iris’s problem of lacking coverage in the medium-telephoto range may be gone making the series quite formidable for indie filmmaking.

      Yea, I am really excited for IRIX's future. They have been doing some pretty amazing things. I really dig the flaring on these. It almost has a vintage feel but its controllable.

  • @joelarvidsson

    Im battling between irix, dzo vespid, or meike primes. Will have to check the dzo pictor zooms, but they looks to soft for me. Judgeing youtube videos is a dangerous thing, but it seams like the irix is sharpest but still keeping some good character.

    • @claytonburns
      @claytonburns 2 роки тому +1

      I would avoid Meike as their image is quite comparable to the rokinons with a new housing. They breathe pretty bad and you need to stop down at least 2 stops to get useable sharpness imo.
      I’d just avoid budget zooms all together as you are making compromises on the sharpness or parfocality that could be avoided by going with primes or if it’s in the budget looking at an angenieux/zeiss/Cooke… rental. Provided I don’t have much experience with the pictors having just seen their look through a video village monitor a while back.
      The DZO Vespids look really solid but I don’t have any experience with them. They are fast with uniform housings and you can get a great full set with character and a pleasant look.
      Now the irix glass while I’m fairly new to it having only tried the 30mm and 45mm are pretty sharp with subtle vintage characteristics. They are a great all around lens. The only drawbacks are
      1. The lens caps on everything but the 30 and 21mm (you can buy new better ones separately for the others)
      2. The lack of a full range of focal lengths (having only 11, 15, 21, 30, 45, and 135 at the moment) but this is likely soon to change as the middle focal lengths and telephoto range is introduced.
      Edit. (150mm macro not 135)

      I'm in the same situation between Vespids or Irix. To me the Vespids seem to have a bit more character while the Irix has a 'cleaner' look, a bit sharper too? Kinda wish I could have both 😂 The Vespids being lighter may sway it for gimbal work, but I'd love to try these Irix primes. Hoping they'll plug the gap between the 45mm and the 150mm soon.

    75 degree focus throw? Did I hear that right? That’s ridiculously small for a cine lens that can’t be right. Is that the focus ring or the apeture?

    Great review, Scott. How would you compare the 30 with character like Leica R or Cooke S4. I don't want anything that looks like Zeiss Cp2. Too clinical and too much CA. The SLR APO lenses are pretty nice in the price range as well. S4 is my favorite to rent but looking for a personal use prime other than my Leica R set. Thank you!

    • @ScottBalkum
      @ScottBalkum  2 роки тому +2

      That’s a great and complex question. I’ll give you my 2 cents, but you should check them out yourself to see what your eyes tell you. First, S4s are very nice. I really enjoy them and their look. The Leica Rs are also very nice with a completely different feel. Both of those have character that are recognizable. CP2s, I completely agree with you. I dislike them although I have seen some work that looked great with them. Most of the time, I do not care for them as flat, boring, and having almost no character. The Irix are somewhere in between. They have more character than CP2s and a little more depth. They aren’t close to S4s though. They are much closer to CP2s than to S4s. Leica Rs are more to the side a little, if you can follow my logic. They have a much different look than the Cookes. They are more flat and flare nicely, if not too much at times. They have more contrast than CP2s for sure. The Irix 30 and 45, in my opinion have a fee that is more contrasty than CP2s and have more depth and a little more contrasty than the Rs. They also flare a bit, not as much as the Rs but closer to them than the CP2s.
      Irix is on the right path with the 30 and 45, I haven’t tested the 21 yet myself. The way I can describe them is, they aren’t S4s, They aren’t CP2s, They are close to the middle, to the side of the Rs. But they are closer to CP2s than the S4s. If that makes sense… Irix are full frame though, so, there is 1 advantage over over the S4s… but, so are the CP2s and Rs.. :) I hop e this helps some. Obviously Irix needs to keep making them this good or better as they expand their line. Hopefully, they continue to refine as they go.

      @@ScottBalkum Thank you so much for taking the time, my friend. Great info here! I for sure follow what you're saying and it was very helpful! I would say for my personal taste the Irix is out. Clean is ok when it comes from a master prime. The fall off is so nice on those. Those DZO Vespids look decent for budget Cine but the CA seems over the top. I like character but CA is something that bothers me greatly. Of course even the S4 carries a little. I guess I will just stick with my R set for personal use and S4 or a S7 if I'm on the LF. Cheers!

    The misunderstanding about what a lens review (and perhaps also about what a compelling youtube video in general should be) is on full display here. In over 10 minutes there's maybe a minute worth of test footage and even that is highly questionable. No real-world usable footage with human faces, wide shots, typical tests of lens performance, etc. It's nearly impossible even for the best TV personalities to keep the audience engaged for 10 minutes. Looks like the Animal seen in the background gave up and started snoring, lol!

    • @ScottBalkum
      @ScottBalkum  2 роки тому +7

      The honest problem is that the internet is so large and everyone has an opinion, it makes it hard to satisfy people. If making lens reviews was my full time job, I’d probably make much longer, in depth visual reviews. But the real catch is, if I did a 30 minute review of the lens with every thing you mention, would you pay $20 to see the review? The answer is likely no. Because people enjoy getting things for free on the internet. I do too. Having a youtube channel is a real struggle sometimes. Its a balance… a tightrope that you have to walk….IF…. You follow everyone’s opinion. 1 misstep and its over. So, I choose to do it differently. I make the videos the best way I can in the time I have. If they help you, that’s great. If they don’t, no worries. We’ll all be fine. I don’t stress about it. Its all good.
