    I use a tiffen 1/2 pearlescent and it really gives that nice soft halation and skin softening. I researched a lot and learned that pro mists and glimmer glass have really ugly patterns in large bokeh balls when you’re shooting wide open, almost like you have a dirty sensor. The pearlescent doesn’t. Something to consider 😊. It’s not a big deal at all if there isn’t significant bokeh but when there is I feel it looks ugly

    Awesome review!! If a camera has auto focus, such as an Sony FX3, do I still need to manually focus this lens? Probably a rookie question, thanks.

    • @progenji6407
      @progenji6407 3 роки тому

      Yes, AF is dependant on the motor in the lens, With Cine lenses you set them up on a mount and attach a focus follow gear to it, AF is pretty bad and slow most of the time so MF is still the way to go for the best results. Hope this helps!

    • @stanleystevens6278

    Looks great but I thought highlight roll off is a function of the camera sensor and gamma curve

    • @initialfocus
      @initialfocus  3 роки тому

      It’s a combo of everything. Absolutely sensor matters when it comes to highlight control and quality but if you throw a terrible lens on an expensive camera it can make the image look way worse than an amazing lens on a decent camera.

    It looks like the lens support may be in the way, as I use a manual follow focus-no motors or anything. The follow focus I have seats nicely underneath my current lenses, on the rods. Is this thing removable? Is it wise to keep it attached?

      @@initialfocus Not in the way and to the degree you are describing. You also seem to attribute it added dynamic range. Both statements are false. Definitely will be a crop. Depends on the camera. My Pocket 6K is a Super 35mm sensor so I don’t even get 45mm but a micro 4/3 like my Pocket 4K is cropped in even more.

I prefer the Vespid's bokeh and lower weight for gimbal work, plus the wider range of lenses currently available, but am still very tempted by the Irixs. It would be great it they would publish their future plans for these lenses so we know whether we're buying into a potential set... or not.

      Oh yeah! Made 2 other videos of the 15mm cine and 150mm macro cine. I am in love with the lenses and am convinced for the price there’s nothing that compares on the current market if you’re wanting to shoot films. Theres not too much character to the lenses in terms of a “unique” look. I tell people it has a sharp cinematic look. Which means it’s not the ugly digital cheap look with bad highlight roll off but just a very pleasing ultra sharp with low focus breathing look *chefs kiss*. For a film the only thing to know is all 3 have very different wide open apertures. The 15mm and 45mm get sharp edge to edge around T4-5.6. Hope that helps

Sometimes I’ll use a pro-mist or DreamFX filter, or sometimes I’ll use tricks in resolve to soften faces, chromatic effects or film emulators if I’m really trying to create a unique look. Thanks for the review. Truly is hard finding content on these. Maybe they need to start shipping some out to UA-camrs to get the word out.

    You didn’t mention it, but judging by the footage it seems like CA isn’t an issue as well. Thanks for making this, these lenses are definitely on my radar now

      Yeah! Haven’t seen really any so far! Watched a review of the 11mm Cine and they mentioned there’s quite a bit of CA on that lens but could have been a bad review unit. The 15, 45 and 150 Cine I haven’t seen any issues with it! Thanks for bringing it up!

    I wish they made a 24mm

    • @staLkerhu
      @staLkerhu 3 роки тому

      Yeah, definietly funny, because 24mm is one really widely used focal length in Hollywood. It appears in the budget Samyang (Rokinon) DS and XEEN lineup, and Canon produces 24mm cinema lenses too. One possible answer is they don't have a 24mm photography lens they can copy, and maybe they didn't want to develop a completely new lens (yet). Most if not all Samyang (Rokinon) DS lens has a photography lens equivalent using f stops and a smooth surface on the focus and aperture ring (probably no more difference).

    Michael, I am sure you have been following the 12K announcement, but not sure if you have been following the technical details. Since almost no one has this camera yet, what I am going to ask is a 100% guess on your part but here goes. How do you think the optics of this lens will do on the 12K camera? Quit laughing!

    • @staLkerhu
      @staLkerhu 3 роки тому

      Today's computers can barely handle 8K editing, plus these 12K cameras definietly will cost a fortune, so I have no idea what are you thinking about. After buying a 12K camera I guess you will have money for literally nothing, and yes, it seems like from Samyang DS, Samyang XEEN and Irix your best bet is Irix...

      @@staLkerhu 12K cameras cost $10,000, plus a few thousand more for drives and media. Same price as a Sony FX9 and half as much as a Red camera.They are certainly affordable when compared to that. I can also say that the IRIX Lenses look fantastic on these cameras. I just wish they would put out more of them in different sizes.

      @staLkerhu 3 роки тому

      @@Justin_Allen well, I guess they don't have more photography lenses to copy. Maybe their cine lenses aren't 100% equivalent to their photography counterparts, but it is a bit suspicious they have all these focal lengths in both category (11mm, 15mm, 45mm, 150mm).
      Weird, because 14mm and 24mm is extremely popular both in Hollywood and in the realm of other professional videographers, and who the hell shoots video with 150mm?

    any reason the lens support is at the top?

    • @initialfocus
      @initialfocus  4 роки тому

      They have mounting holes on the bottom or top so you can place it on either side if you want! For me it gets in the way on the bottom with other accessories so I like it on top to mount stuff if need be
