I’m hoping the old world takes over as my main game. The aesthetic of AOS has never been to my liking and I’m a huge history guy so fantasy has always held great appeal. My dream and plan is to have a fully painted Empire army painted in the Stirland colors. I’m also going to have a dwarf and orc and goblin army. If GW supports the game properly I would happily play this over 40K for good.
I agree, aos never really caught my attention the way that the old world did. I do have a nighthaunt collection but I'd happily swap them over to squares for a vc army in a heartbeat.
I started Bretonnians when they released the 6th edition army book, and painted all of the knights as individuals. I’ve only painted 24 knights of the realm so far, and hope to have 8 more by the new year. Painting them as individuals takes a lot of work, so I can understand you wanting to paint a more uniform look. By the time you finish one batch of 10 you might want to do your next group in another scheme, so you don’t have to make up your mind just yet. Your paint scheme looks really good! Looking forward to seeing more!
I'd recommend painting the units in different schemes. Both for variety, and to make it less monotonous. (It also means you don't need to buy hundreds of Black Templar transfer symbols). I fully understand people who want to paint their Bretonnians in one unified scheme. Painting is a labor-intensive hobby, and doing it all in a single paint scheme makes it easier for people to get their models painted and on the board. Plus, some folks just like the aesthetic. It was the correct decision on GW's part to establish "knights unified in color under their lord's banner" as a valid way of approaching the army in The Old World. For me, personally, I wouldn't be satisfied with anything less than every single knight having not just their own paint scheme, but their own heraldry. It's both traditional for Bretonnia, and more importantly _historical._ Knights in the Real World were all their own feudal lords, with their own lands, and fought under their own colors and heraldic devices. I've been wanting to start a Bretonnian army for a while now, and I like the idea of each model being its own character. Each a "hero" in their own right.
What I like about your videos is that you illustrate an achievable result. You're probably a better painter than I am, but I feel like you're at a down to earth level. So often other heavy hitter UA-camrs demonstrate techniques that most painters are nowhere near the level of. It's like they're showing off. Your videos are relaxing and doable.
I also recently got into medievals and a trick I learned to increase the amount of variety is to reduce my batch sizes down to a minimum (4 for cavalry) then slightly change the way I would apply the same paints on the model. I imagine you could easily get the same increase by either using a colour you're already using on a different part of the heraldry or use the same colours but in a different pattern.
For the Knights Errants (if you do them) I would love to see a inverted paint scheme of this one. So more beige and less blue to show that they are "poorer"/ still have to earn their colors
Very excited for the Old World, and specifically Brettonians. Might have to dig my unloved models out of the closet after watching this!! I agree with your take about the scale of the game - the key words are FOR NOW. I see this as getting in on the ground floor of what will grow into being a much larger game and system down the road. Just look where Necromunda started compared to how extensive the model range and variety of factions are now! Excited for a tight, well crafted game for the first year and more to look forward to in the future!
I'm super stoked for the Old World! Fantasy was my first warhammer game and I'm glad its coming back. Love the knight, he looks great. I think having each unit its own colors would look great. Maybe to represent different households or whatever. That's what I'm planning on doing anyway. Looking forward to more!
I definitely think that painting each squad in matching house colors would be wiser than painting each knight as their own house. That way you can get squads of them done without getting burnt out dumping hours into an individual model. As for this starter knight, I liked the results of the blue and the creamy brown. They're nice and subtle and it looks great. Nicely done!
Took me 20 years to get started on the last 3 from my box too... Nowhere near done with them yet though. Don't really paint anymore - just for fun when my son comes round. I gave him all my paints so it's the only time I can!
Looking beautiful. Maybe you could do Red and White or Blue and Black for one of the last Grail Knights to bring some more saturated colour to the final unit.
Love the cloth effect with the lots of little brushstrokes to build up a textured appearance. Makes a change from the smoth blends we see on cloaks and other garments and I reckon it looks better!
Stunning model. Well done! Getting my Averlanders prepped for next year. And I've got 3000 points of Marauder-era metal dwarfs that's sat unpainted since 1989, so don't feel TOO bad about 20 years, my dude!
I became interested in the warhammer IP in general from total war warhammer 2 so I'm super excited for the old world. Right now I'm just trying to figure out if my main army will be empire, high elves, or dwarves.
The leather straps on the horse would be the horses tack. Also the weird bumpy bits on the forearm are likely oversized rivets over leather for a brigandine vambrace or part of a Visby gauntlet.
Really nice looking scheme. I avoided painting the Brets I had back when I played before, but have really been enjoying them this time round. Seems we paint using some similar methods, and I used HH Fists crosses on mine as well, though I’ve since gone back and adjusted them slightly with another decal. I’ve been making quite a bit of TOW content as well, and it’s really nice to see some more hobby related stuff (which is what I tend to focus on), as much as I like all the speculation chatter, good old painting videos are great to see as well, I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more of your videos.
I am so excited to see the Old World return, and I am so thankful that I didn’t sell of the Chaos army I started during The End Times (talk about bad timing). So I have around 3000+ pts (per 8th edition) of Chaos waiting to get some paint on them.
If you want more templar crosses i would give etsy a go...there are shops to get transfer sheers of just that kind of stuff. Ive had custom ones made for my imperial knights which have come out good as well. I would say the one colour scheme for the lower ranks and peasants and then custom house livery for higher knights who would wear their own colours. Ive not been warching long but love your channel, its got me more into my airbrushing and contrast colours.
Disappointed by the transfer sheet of axes. Thinking of looking into space marine chapter badges for heraldry options when it comes to Grail and Questing Knights.
I am incredibly excited for the old world. I will be focused entirely on a Bretonnia Peasant Militia army, I already own many models for it that I'll need to rebase, but I'm very excited to finally get my hands on Battle Pilgrims, Yeomen, Foot Knights and Paladins with Battle Standards. Only a few days left to go!
I like the idea of multiple color schemes across the army, maybe each unit of knights a different scheme with a matching unit of foot troops. I’m very much looking forward to TOW, I have all three elves armies and a small orcs and goblins army which I’ve began to work on again!

You sir are a LIFE SAVER! I want to do my men at arms and knights of the relms as the kingdom of Jerusalem colours like the film. Then questing knights in Richard the Lions Hearts knights colours and Grail knights as a mix of knight from the film. Cheers mate!
Don't worry about how long it gets round to painting a figure,iv just finished a unit of easterling cavalry from 1982 for lord of the rings, your figure looks wonderful, will be following with interest.
Giving my bretonians Knights a unique a personal color scheme put my off. Decided they would be on a crusade and only their shieles would show a personal sign horses and their clothes would be uniform.
Looks fantastic! If I may suggest... have a uniform scheme for about 2/3 and a 2nd scheme as Reinforcements.. and multiple colors for the peasants.. thoughts?
Back in the day I painted my Knights of the Realm by unit, thinking that the knights where all part of the extended noble family with only slight variations in personal heraldry between them. Questing and Grail knigths though where all individials and still my favorite minis.
This knight came out really nice. I'm glad I found your channel. I'm becoming more excited about Old World comming back. For a while I kept saying I'm only ever going to play 6th. Especially when I found out Skaven were being shelved. Bretonnia was my first warhammer army, so maybe I'll be going back to my roots. I did like the fact that each knight was different, that's how it was irl, that's how you knew who was who when they were in armor. But I do like the look of a unit in variations of the same colors. Great job so far, let me know if you ever do something in abandon black and averland sunset, I could use some tips.
Skaven will be playable on release! Have you seen my cities of Sigmar video? I have a yellow/black scheme that might help you! Glad you found my channel as well, lots more old world content on the way!
Name dropping Kingdom of Heaven? Amazing! Might have to steal this paint scheme. Also, if you have not watched the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven, you should check it out! It is amazing.
I only watched it last year after rewatching the released version a lot and man it’s SO much better! Everything makes way more sense!! Steal away, would love to see the scheme out there more!
I've always wanted to try the full tilt gw game, Eric's hobby workshop did a good video on it and it's always good to have multiple games for one model
Different schemes per unit seems like the way to go for Bretonnia, more uniformed look probably fits the Empire more but that's just me. Red scheme would be 🔥🔥 Very excited for the Empire to come back personally.
Bretonnians were my favourite army in Old World as I love King Arthur and similar tales, but the individual schemes were too daunting for my 13 year old self. With Old World I considered Knights and Matching Yeoman as schemes between units. If I don’t do Bretonnians, i will do a Wardancer focused Wood Elf List - especially if they re-release the Wood Elf Wardancer Lord
Given our best guess on the timeline its likely we'll see Skaven fairly early depending on how they handle release storylines. Around this time is when the Red Pox happened in Bretonnia and they were invaded by plague and Skaven.
I'm quite excited for the old world and working on a bretonnian army myself. My current plan for color schemes is to do a batch of 1-1-1 grail, realm, and errant knights with shared heraldry and paint a group of infantry to match each character in the army. I'm aiming to have the majority of the peasantry wear the lord's colors but I'm personally just excited to play around with heraldric progression across trios of models to keep things fresh and varied. I honestly hope that the old world stays relatively small in scale, somewhere around what it was in 5-6 edition, because the more gw upcosts nostalgia the more prohibitive it will be to new players. If all else fails this will at least be a great excuse to break out some older edition and play.
Not a Bretonnian guy. But id probably keep each unit in a similar color scheme, maybe with a different bit of quartering or halving from unit to unit, with each knight getting some personal Heraldry on the shield or a crest somewhere. Easy to fluffy in my head as knights being from the same house, with different units coming from the counts or barons under each duke. Atleast for the knights errant/ knights of the realm. Questing or grail knights its fair for them to have their own heraldry. ..Also entirely valid to just look at dude and pick whatever color fits him best. Its how i paint my orks.
You are so right, that baby blue scheme really works well. Great vid'. OK, probably a stupid question. When you zenithal, why do you go with the grey rather than a white please?
Looks great, I would complete the rest of the unit in the same scheme as a single retinue, maybe an infantry unit as well but paint the rest in different schemes. Check out The Mighty Brush who do a templar cross decal sheet.
Before I go into fanboy mode, I just want to ask how close is that dark earth paste to Stirland Mud? Cause I have loads leftover from an old AoS project and I'm thinking I'll use that to start with on my Old World project but go over to the AK paste when that runs out. The one thing I love that they're doing is supporting ALL factions at launch. So I don't have to wait 4-5 years for them to do Skaven, I'll have a "Index" book that I can play games of with at my local club. The other thing I love is that they're going back in time to flesh out and improve/expand the lore and give us new characters and events that may have been forgotten about by the time the old setting comes about. I love that they're focusing on the 8 key factions and the narrative will eventually envelope all. Personally I can't wait for a campaign that starts with the end of the Skaven Civil War and the war between the rats, Dwarfs and Goblins begins. I've ordered 75 25mm square mdf bases off ebay and have begun construction of 10 Stormvermin, which will eventually expand into 20, to go along with Queek Headtaker, who is waiting to be highlighted, and lead a great force of Clan Mors and Pestilens allies. I of course will be collecting Bretonnia as well. My local store ran a slow build event running up to End Times and I started collecting a Bretonnian army. Started with the Green Knight and 8 Grail Knights. Expanded into a Battalion and my "Death Star" unit was a full unit of Battle Pilgrims with the Relique, man I loved that unit! Anyway, sorry for such a long post. I'll be joining you for the road to Old World and will be promoting the game on my channel as well.
All Great points pal. Maybe I will Get to play you skaven some Time at an event. I’m quite impressed with what they have said and shown so far. Thanks for taking the time. Appreciate it.
In fantasy, didn't Bretonnia launch a crusade against Araby? So if you want to just make every knight in the same or similar color scheme then base it on that or a similar home brewed crusade or expeditionary force :) Otherwise, a simple way to keep them uniform but still being unique by showing what house they are from is to paint their shields and shield looking bits on the horse in different ways on each knight.
I JUST bit the bullet and got into AoS. Soulblight is scratching my Vampire Counts itch for the time being. I'm also really apprehensive to get into it if they are committing to resin. I'd just rather not. That being said, I know once the game settles into itself it will call me back. Fantasy was always #1 for me, but I'm not ready to jump in head first. Cautiously optimistic.
It sometimes doesn’t show up well on camera but it’s a solid coat of chaos black and a lighter coat from above of grey seer. Chaos black adds a lot of shadows and the grey seer adds lighter areas to help me block out colours better!
your reason to delay the painting of your brettonians army, was almost same as mine to not do my nids.. I did not want to do them all in one color sceme.. so I looked at insect families, and spiders are all spiders BUT... they are very diverse in both shape and build as well in colors and such so I decided to do my nids squads in uniform colors but every different type of nid has a different side coloring them.. d.
Nice i like the aesthetic. Tip for you, even though you prob arent bothered (sorry lol), if a horse is dark hair on its leg, its corresponding hoof will be dark. Likewise, if its leg is light, its hoof will be light. Love the work though
@@MediocreHobbies As a Black Templars player, I may be a bit biased, however, a movie tie in is brilliant! ! ! Looking forward to seeing you completed army. Best of luck.
This knight came out fantastic, but.....isn't the whole point of using contrast paints to simplify and speed up the painting process when doing high volume projects? Going back over them with normal acrylics to do 1st and 2nd highlights seems to me to negate the speediness that the contrast paints were developed for. I cant wait to see your entire army completed but I also can't help but wonder if your actually benefiting time-wise by using the contrast paints at all. 👍 though for the awesome work!
There’s more than one way of using contrast! I use it to apply a really quick base colour which is also the shadow colour. If I skipped the contrast stage it would take a few layers of the next coat to build a solid colour which would take way longer to do! Hope that makes sense? Glad you liked the knight!
Hold up kingdom of heaven orlando bloom, he had two color schemes, first part of the movie he was baron of ibily and that was a red and tan color or off white cause desert and dust and dirt, later half of the movie he was defending Jerusalem with the leper ruler personal guard colors of blue white and gold. it gets a bit confusing due to multiple knights were shown in the movie with templars, hospitalers, Teutonic knights, even lion heart himself later towards the end. Not trying to be a jerk or a troll just some general information and hope it helps later if you do go with every unit gets to be different
He looks really cool, for me all the different heraldry of bretonnians is what turned me away from them their visual was always too disjointed for me. But different colours for each unit would be the way to go I think, as my favourite old world force was high elves and I really liked that each elite unit had its own defined look.
I started with fantasy back in 95 roughly. Might of been 94. Who knows anymore. I've got zero excitement for GWs inevitable shit take on rank and file rules. We already have Kings of War and Age of Fantasy to use our old models. Both games are much better than Warhammer ever played.
I really don’t understand your point of view. Why don’t you want to see the rules and maybe try it out before you have such a negative opinion on it. I’m very excited for it.
@@MediocreHobbies Because it's going to follow the same old GW policy. Do the absolute minimum whilst charging the absolute maximum. The game will almost certainly play poorly in comparison to alternatives. They will charge an arm and a leg for rules and army books that should be free. Post launch this game system is absolutely guaranteed to be basically abandonware as are all their games except 40k. See the HH as a prime example of what is going to happen to this new game system. The GW model these days is to drum up the hype with a saturation advertising campaign, release a big box set that is very expensive, release a few over priced books over the following months and then get ready for the next game system big box release. Inspires zero excitement. If content creators spent time shining a light on the alternatives, we collectively, could reduce the GW stranglehold on the tabletop hobby and have a much healthier and more fun tabletop hobby experience.
@@MediocreHobbies im just messing around, im talking about fields and blazons and the rules around them. You cant put a metal on top of metal (i.e white blazon on a yellow field) or a color on top of a color (red blazon on a blue field). A blazon can’t be black, blue, or red, a field can’t be yellow or white. I don’t actually care, more making fun of the people who care about it.

Don't worry about how long it gets round to painting a figure,iv just finished a unit of easterling cavalry from 1982 for lord of the rings, your figure looks wonderful, will be following with interest.
Oh wow, that's so cool, you must be so proud of getting him done! That's great to hear, glad you'll following the series!
Giving my bretonians Knights a unique a personal color scheme put my off. Decided they would be on a crusade and only their shieles would show a personal sign horses and their clothes would be uniform.
That’s very cool. I like it.
Will be interesting to see how this army progresses ❤❤
Agreed lol. Already 150 models started lol.
Played fantasy since swcond ed. I am lovong the return of old world. Pulled out some old gobbos and habe been batch painting like a madman.
Love hearing that!! So cool knowing all these models are getting their time in the sun!
My first warhammer set was 5 grial knights. 17 years later, I have already finished them and the process was a nightmare
Looks fantastic! If I may suggest... have a uniform scheme for about 2/3 and a 2nd scheme as Reinforcements.. and multiple colors for the peasants.. thoughts?
Not a bad thought at all.
Back in the day I painted my Knights of the Realm by unit, thinking that the knights where all part of the extended noble family with only slight variations in personal heraldry between them. Questing and Grail knigths though where all individials and still my favorite minis.
Yeah they’re such fun models with so many little details!
Very true pal. Love Eric’s hubby workshop. Greta channel.
Change it up by unit. I think that'll look the best.
I never played before, but am looking forward to starting an army when the new game releases.
Glad to hear your excited pal.
love the paintjob. wish We can get most of the army in plastic and not in resin when the old worlds come out.
Characters will be resin, the main armies will be plastic!
I was thinking I would have units of colours but not whole army same. Not sold on whole army in one scheme but simplifying is good.
Ye it’s a tough one.
Diffrent units would be awesome
A few people think so.
Different schemes per unit seems like the way to go for Bretonnia, more uniformed look probably fits the Empire more but that's just me.
Red scheme would be 🔥🔥
Very excited for the Empire to come back personally.
Oh yes. Empire will be glorious.
Two strong ideas for armies.
Cool you make feathering seem less daunting haha
Im glad! I’d love to try make a video of the different techniques some time, trying to work out how to do it best though
Given our best guess on the timeline its likely we'll see Skaven fairly early depending on how they handle release storylines. Around this time is when the Red Pox happened in Bretonnia and they were invaded by plague and Skaven.
They’ll be supported on release, just not sure how long we’ll be waiting for new models! Very excited to see the new storylines as well!
Very nice.
Thanks man
Can't wait for the old world stuff,High and Wood Elves...
It’s going to be great.
I'll probably do a goblin army as a second force if the game takes off, as I've really enjoyed painting the bad moons paintscheme.
Or beastmen. I've always dreamed of a beastmen horde centered around morghur, and I have an unbuilt and unpainted morghur in a box somewhere.
Ye same. I’m very excited and hope they don’t go overboard.
That’s a fair point cheers.
You are so right, that baby blue scheme really works well. Great vid'.
OK, probably a stupid question. When you zenithal, why do you go with the grey rather than a white please?
I don’t want it it to bright. I want the grim dark feel. So grey.
Looks great, I would complete the rest of the unit in the same scheme as a single retinue, maybe an infantry unit as well but paint the rest in different schemes. Check out The Mighty Brush who do a templar cross decal sheet.
Will check them out thank you!! Badly needed 😄
Check out The Mighty Brush, you can get a whole sheet of just crosses
Ye I seen them yesterday so good looking.
Love the mini and you did a perfect paintjob :D
But how awesome would it be if you kitbash these knights with the new cities of sigmar knights
Ohhh if I didn’t plan on do both armies I would definitely be mixing them!
I think you should go wild with Knights (so every Knight is different) and be more grounded with Peasants (more unified units)
I really don’t think I would enjoy that process lol.
Maybe I will
Get to play you skaven some
Time at an event. I’m quite impressed with what they have said and shown so far. Thanks for taking the time. Appreciate it.
In fantasy, didn't Bretonnia launch a crusade against Araby? So if you want to just make every knight in the same or similar color scheme then base it on that or a similar home brewed crusade or expeditionary force :)
Otherwise, a simple way to keep them uniform but still being unique by showing what house they are from is to paint their shields and shield looking bits on the horse in different ways on each knight.
That’s a great idea.
I get that. Makes perfect sense.
@@MediocreHobbies I should add that I’m super pumped you’ll be an ambassador for the game. I’m really looking forward to the content.
looks great! one question : why do you use two spray coats? Why not just grey seer?
It sometimes doesn’t show up well on camera but it’s a solid coat of chaos black and a lighter coat from above of grey seer. Chaos black adds a lot of shadows and the grey seer adds lighter areas to help me block out colours better!
your reason to delay the painting of your brettonians army, was almost same as mine to not do my nids.. I did not want to do them all in one color sceme.. so I looked at insect families, and spiders are all spiders BUT... they are very diverse in both shape and build as well in colors and such so I decided to do my nids squads in uniform colors but every different type of nid has a different side coloring them..
d.
That’s so cool for Tyranids. Great idea.
I got back into gaming in 2018 and was fuming to find out that the old world was no more. I want "proper" dwarves damnit!
Hahahah dam straight.
good video
Thanks so much!
Nice i like the aesthetic. Tip for you, even though you prob arent bothered (sorry lol), if a horse is dark hair on its leg, its corresponding hoof will be dark. Likewise, if its leg is light, its hoof will be light. Love the work though
Oh no that is a great tip. Thank you.
@@MediocreHobbies one of the benefits of growing up with horses. No problem. Although a white horse can still have black hooves if they are tarred
Epic!
Thank you!
Great video, personally, I know it's more work but I'd make each knight unique.
Ye I like the idea. Juts don’t have the time to do 50 knights all in there own scheme.
The Orlabo Bloom Templar scheme is inspired genius, well done ! ! !
Cheers pal. Really enjoyed it.
@@MediocreHobbies As a Black Templars player, I may be a bit biased, however, a movie tie in is brilliant! ! !
Looking forward to seeing you completed army. Best of luck.
The Lady blesses you
Im honoured!
OLD WORLD, OLD WORLD, OLD WORLD!!!!
Hahhaha yeeeeesss.
I may go for a monty python theme for my knights
Yeeeeeeesssssssss please do.
I think it looks beyond "mediocre" to be fair 😅 Looks very good!
Haha thanks man
Grail knights deserve their own heraldry.
Agreed.
Yes it’s crayz hard to see what he was wearing. But I’d live to try the other scheme as well.
What a coincidence, its gonna take me 20 years to buy the actual Bretonnia box
Haha I’m waiting for restocks too, it better not take that long!
@@MediocreHobbies spoilers: they are totally gonna miss the hype train
Orlando Bloom's character has nothing to do with the Knight of Antioch
Okay!
He looks really cool, for me all the different heraldry of bretonnians is what turned me away from them their visual was always too disjointed for me. But different colours for each unit would be the way to go I think, as my favourite old world force was high elves and I really liked that each elite unit had its own defined look.
Ye that was such a great touch for that army.
Two years and you got it wrong! You can’t have two different fields! You have two totally different heraldry’s!
What are you on about?
@@MediocreHobbies im just messing around, im talking about fields and blazons and the rules around them. You cant put a metal on top of metal (i.e white blazon on a yellow field) or a color on top of a color (red blazon on a blue field). A blazon can’t be black, blue, or red, a field can’t be yellow or white.
I don’t actually care, more making fun of the people who care about it.
Christ! What is the point of using a painting stand if you're just going to rub your oily fingers all over the model anyway?
Chill dude 👍
@@MediocreHobbies do you really think that oily thumbs up emoji is going to stop me? LOL
Very "deus vult" like scheme.
Now, make him a nametag and write Orlando on it 😂
Hahahhaha for sure.
Very nice
Cheers.
