- After 10 years of doing painting tutorials for both Games Workshop and the Academy (www.duncanrhodes.com), I finally get to paint one of my absolute favourite miniatures of all time - A Bretonnian Knight of the Realm! With the imminent release of the Old World, we figured this was a great opportunity to paint this classic and beloved miniature from the Golden Age of Warhammer Fantasy.
We show you everything you need to know to paint your Bretonnian Knights of the Realm from start to finish. As usual, all the techniques shown here can be used on a wide range of miniatures in your Bretonnian army as well as your favourite medieval miniatures too. For the Lady! For Glory! For Bretonnia!

For Bretonnia!
Can't wait for Old world, for the Lady!
All I wanted when I was 14 was a Wood Elf dragon. When I finally got one, I stuck it together, got massively intimidated by the paint job and left it on a shelf forevermore.
Some say it still stalks the loft of a particular house in Nottingham...
My favorites are also the Knights of Bretonnia, and I am very much looking forward to painting the revived army. Most especially that new Prophetess on horseback. Only complaint about that model is that she is not riding sidesaddle.
Looking forward to it, to build an ogre kingdom army. Speaking of, is there any duncan ogre tutorials, or tutorials you'd recommend for them?
Nothing quite like seeing Duncan paint miniatures early in the morning (in the us). Also I hope that all you lovely people are doing well.
Thanks. We hope that you are doing great too!
You too!
😊 и тебе всего хорошего)
I have been obsessed with the green Knight Mini since forever.
Me too. It's in my top 10 for sure!
There may never be a better miniature.
Never came around to painting him. Maybe now is the time.
I still have mine together with morgana painted by my late mother and they still look snazy after 15+ years 😲
I don't know if this is something you guys would be interested, but I would love to see you guys make a display board for miniatures at some point, like for armies on parade or something. Also seeing all of duncans bretonnians would be really cool too!
No ta bad idea :-)
When I started the hobby back in 1998, my first model ever was the bretonnian plastic knight (and his peasant bowmen) and when I reactivated the hobby almost 4 years ago, I knew that I had to paint one of them again. It also filled me with joy when I read about the announcement of Old World. For the Lady!
Awesome! For the Lady and for Glory!
It’s wonderful watching Duncan painting a miniature he’s really excited about.
It's like watching a British Mr. Rogers. Seriously, great video.
Well i guess im gonna have to buy a knight now. I really love following along with your tutorials. I save them and pause as the steps go. Thank you SO much for all you do.
I don't know if I will ever play this version of the game but I wanna paint like a thousand Bretonnian Knights.
Do it for the Lady
These new Flesh Eater Courts models are wild. Good stuff.
😂😂😂😂😂
Taken the plunge of buying my first miniature after a long time hesitating and I've gone with a Bretonnian knight. This video can couldn't have been *more* helpful!
The Master at work , it's always a pleasure to watch and learn .
Man, my first Warhammer models were the Bretonnian archers, so you can imagine the pain and joy to be a 14yo noob in the early 2000's trying to paint Bretonnian knights.
Thank you so much for this tutorial Duncan.
Awesome starter kit lol. Thanks for the kind comment
I was excited for old world, and finally getting a Bretonnian army. Seeing Duncan excited and then seeing this absolutely stunning modern interpretation of an iconic model has sky rocketed my excitement! Thanks for an awesome video!
*Sir Duncan Rhodes* ⚔
Aye ⚔️
My favourite faction since I started with Warhammer Fantasy Battles 5th edition all the way back in 1996. The first Knight of the Realm I painted from that box was with red and blue heraldry with a yellow lion.
Flawless, as befitting such a knightly paragon. Fit to face all enemies of virtue and order.
2 things i'm looking forward to on this earth. Old World, and Light no Fire
Love to see your mini favorites out Duncan. I cant wait for getting mine in Februari
I'm so glad you made this guide! I've started assembling my Old World Bretonnian kit and this is extremely helpful in planning out how I'd like to tackle painting them.
Terrified of painting my Bretonnian army for the Old World, but will give it a go based on this video. Please do more Bretonnians as the Old World launches; for the Lady!
Nice!! I'll probably stick to Grail Knights and the small heraldry on knights of the realm when I do my Bretonnia army.
Otherwise I'd never get the army finished lol
I know right
I loved this! Would love to see more Bretonnians :-)
Me too
Please make a showcase of your 3000p. bretonian army.
We may just do that :-)
FOR THE LADY!
Glorious!
I’m so glad I bought wave I and II from your kickstarter. Best money I’ve ever spent on paints.
These minis are maybe some of the biggest candidates for pinning and sub assemblies in the citadel range. I pinned the horses feet/foot and the same with rider but the rider got a pin in an unmentionable place 😳 Shields got glued on later for the same reason. Maybe not neccessary and time consuming but it reduced frustration for me.
Pinning them is pure dedication.
That brush has definitely seen better days, completely unworthy of dressing a knight!
It's a peasant brush... 😁
Great paint job! The only thing that gives me pause is flipping the pegasus sinister on the right side, as that's _technically_ a different standard all together. But I'm unsure if that's just me being picky or not, haha!
WOW... Stunning ❤
Your paint job and guide alone make me want to get a box of Bretonnians. I don't even play The Old World.
Ohh.. one can tell the love for the faction from the extra intro :D
Amazing!
Thank you , DRPA .
🐺Loupis Canis .
Thank you 🐺🐺🐺🐺
Perry Miniatures make great historical kits that work very well for a Bretonnian army project.
By the power of Greyskull!! That’s a mind blowing collection!!
It's not too bad lol Many years of collecting
I love the medium base coat brush that's definitely seen better days.
Its a useful tool in my paint brush collection, thats for sure.
At last. Back to real Warhammer. *sigh of relief*
Great tips, beautiful work. The only issue I have is when you got to the decals. It was wrong to say to flip the decal so that they all face forward. In heraldry the direction a charge faces is just as important as the tincture or charge its self. If this knight is identified by "in pale azure and gules, a winged horse rampent argent" then to put a winged horse rapent sinister argent on one side is wrong, even if it does look like the thing is running away.
My favorite was borgio the besieger! One hell of a mini!
Sure was
The vitriol when he said filthy peasant was 😂
😂😂😂
Spectacular mate. Truly 😊
Now thats clean :)
Lovely.
"This is a noble knight after all and not some filthy peasant" You speak like a true lord of Bretonnia! XD
Send the new squire to get some more white ink for the printer to print those custom transfers!
I cant wait to pick up the starter set for Bretonnia for Old World! I never played Fantasy and so missed them, but I was introduced to them through total war: Warhammer! I love their lore, their models.. I even made my first warhammer fantasy roleplay character a knight-errant! So I may just follow this tutorial, for ze lady!
Also quick question, I notice that there are those almost grass like plastic bits beneath the hooves, and the Hexwraith/Black Knight kits have those too. Are they okay to cut off or are they needed for stability?
Great job as always, of course. I prefer the WFB5 caparisons, but regardless, I can't wait. I've been dreaming of getting these models for a decade! (That said, while I probably won't sand down any escutcheons on caparisons simply due to sheer number of them, I definitely will any on banners.)
A bretonnian Barça fan :D
Show us your Bretonnian army, Duncan! The king must keep his subjects happy, or the people will revolt!
Cool idea
This is a complete noob questions, but what hapenned to the plastic supports beneath the front hooves and the back right hoof in the based figure? Did you cut them after the painting? How? And doesn't that make the figure really easy to accidentally break off the base?
Have waited for this video for so long😢
Btw so smart to paint silver first, it will save me so much time on my knights and men at arms!😊
Hope you enjoy it!
Have you ever shown the public your armies? It could be a fun video - and if you can tell why you choose this and that and if you would make anything different - that would be cool.
Cool idea
Nazgob's up there in my favourites, hard to pick a single mini though!
Nice work. Are you planning on painting up that Mumak any time soon?
One day. The box is actually filled with Bretonnian bitz
Decal was so wrong when it comes to the direction. The charge (decal) allways face the same way. Either to the left or right, otherwise you end up with two different heraldic devices for the same knight.
You think with my rampant adhd that not having to have a repeatable monotonus scheme across an army would be bliss...but nope.....choice paralysis with so many different things i COULD do with each model....
Siding with the French!!!! Duncan's ancestors that fought in the 100 years war will be turning in their graves lol
How cool would this model be in a Grimdark style… 🤟💪🏻
Now i hope some for legions imperialis(i love old world i cant wait)
Awesome Tutorial. I'm going to try out the Two Thin Coats Paints when I get my Bretonnian army box set. I currently use Windsor and Newton Series 7 brushes, how do Artis Opus compare to these?
Good! Great! Need battle reports
Mind sharing you did the basing Duncan? 😊
old school trollslayer, 2 swords in the air
great video - it would be awesome if you could show the transfer application as well please
We covered it in great detail in a Techniques video on our Academy website ☺
I think Duncan enjoyed saying "filthy peasant" a little too much, hahaha.
😁
What are the right paints to use for yellow, black, and white to build up the layers? And same question for different horse colors.
Perfect video tutorial. Could we have a video on how to apply transfers?
We did a full in-depth technique tutorial on that very subject over on the Academy a year or so ago ☺
I searched transfers on your home page and it didn't show up.@@DuncanRhodesDRPA
Duncan is in my top 1 brshiti popel
What do you call a knight encircled in enemies?
Sir Rounded.
Which colours were used for basing the knight?
Looks cool, do you paint CMON A Song of Ice and Fire miniatures? I think you would enjoy the Tully Cavaliers.
If you love all things knightly ... that is a game that has far fewer tutorials and how to paint videos than the space marines.
I sure do! I have a couple fully painted armies too. Plus we have a whole host of tutorials over at the Academy
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA awesome. So if I sign up for the Academy I can do the courses on the ASOIAF minis? I really do not want to buy Warhammer stuff.
A great and nostalgic miniature, but the fact the horse's bridle has no crown piece has to be the biggest "goof" I've seen on a Games Workshop miniature.
"For the lady!"
But sir! What did you do with that support piece under the hoof?
It was secretly removed....
A bit dissapointing that the final based miniature isnt the same one as the one you painted. Meaning, on the based model the plastic stabiliser has been removed from the front hoove. Please show how you remove that in a good efficient way. That I would love to see
So when's the shirt available to purchase?!
You like it?
Bretonnian necks are strong due to their need to wear 5kg of marble on top of their heads
woah Duncan you really emphasized that he is'nt a filthy peasant
such a shame they discontinued bretonnia army + tombkings
Agreed. But they are coming back soon
Is this an old fantasy model then or is it one of the new old world models?
10/10
I love your content man. Damn shame about The Old World though....Damn shame...
Tried to paint an old school Bretonnian army and realised I couldn't be bothered.
So hyped for Old World and feeling confident enough to actually paint a Bretonnian army. I was still a teenager when I first got into Fantasy and was way too intimidated to even attempt painting Bretonnians.
At first glance it appears difficult but its quite easy to be honest.
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA Well, yeah, I know that...now :D But 15, 16 years ago, there sadly wasn't someone telling me that and showing me the process like you and all the other amazing painters out there. I just get nostalgic when I see these minis because they were my absolute dream army back then, and when I got back into the hobby after Fantasy went away, I was kinda sad to (as it seemed) never get the chance to do them. So I'm just ecstatic to see them return and to know that for people coming into the hobby now, there are readily available resources to get over the anxiety of starting to paint!
I hear ya, mine are still on sprue in the 5th ed starter box along with the bowmen. I can't wait to start them and pick up the new Army box next year!
I am a veteran painter of Bretonnia with about 50-60 knights all of this era kit.
Each one has unique heraldry but shares from a common pallet of 6 colours (I use green, as it is my favorite) as you mentioned.
the common colours make the models "fit" as a cohesive force.
I'm delighted to see that these models are getting the love and attention they deserve.
The amount of smooth surface allows for really fun geometric shapes and let you make some fun and interesting heraldry.
To anyone just starting to paint Bretonnian knights, Be BOLD. These models can have a serious ugly phase as you move into the layer step just hold the line until the highlights and transfers are in place. Sometimes the most gaudy and clashing pallet can result in striking knights that you place front and center into your lance formations.
SOUND THE CHARGE!
For Glory, For the Lady, For Bretonnia!
you weren't kidding lol i'm at the basecoating stage and these colors are hideous right now!
@@popsecret101be brave my fellow knight!
Would you be willing to sell me 8 of your knights that are already painted?
Awesome! My first and favorite army. Would you consider a future video just focused on planning Bretonnian heraldry and schemes? Thanks for all you do.
Absolutely
I've never played a tabletop game, but I adore watching the painting process, and this video is utter class. Not only is it shot and edited in such a seamless way, your presentation and cadence os the cherry on top. Wholehearted respect my friend.
P.S. You come across like that one teacher at school who actually gives a shit lol
Bretonnian was was the origin of my life long devotion and love for the hobby. Way back in 93 i believe. I remember getting the Green Knight and just looking at him and the paint job in wonder and fear to attempt the studio paint job as a nine year old. Cheers Dunc.
The removal of Bretonnians is why I never bothered with AoS.
A very fine of you my fellow nobleman
Why so?
If I may ask
@@ChaseDaOrk3767 Because its the Bretonians I liked as a faction and the new Bretonians have lost what I liked about them.
@@RainMakeR_Workshop Fair enough
The KotR/KE kit was such a joy to see when it originally came out. As much as i loved the older plastic 2-in-a-box knights, these were miles ahead. They might be basic-looking by todays standard but i think they still hold up nicely
For the king, and for the Lady!
YOU CAN FLIP TRANSFERS?!
I'm an idiot!!
I was today years old when I found this out, thanks Duncan!
My word, that is an Oldhammer army to be jealous of.
I love Fantasy so much, it is by far my favourite setting. Out if curiosity if you’re willing and able to answer were you ever upset when you were at GW and they discontinued Fantasy? Did they ever get mad if people mentioned it?
"My favourite of all time is a French knight"
Hand over your oaths to His Majesty King Charles III, one of these damn boats heading the right way.
What an incredibly beautiful model! I would use the same colours as well
Have you got a Green Knight stashed away in there somewhere?
why not a space marine in that color sheme?
blue-red squared, gold chest eagle , brown leathers ,silver for metallic parts and i white horse as chapter symbol . tadaaa
Green Knight next Duncan you know it needs to be done… The Lady wills it!
For ze lady and ze duke Duncan de la Rhodes!
“And not some filthy peasant” your facial expression as you said that, brilliant.
