Painted up my first Bretonnian ever the other day - also gave your technique and style a try, using contrasts and largely painting over them. Turned out super crisp and clean, very happy with it! Thanks for all the Old World content.
Good to see him painted! And nice to hear from someone who was as excited as i was. I bought him as soon as he was on preorder, think he looks epic. He's on my desk at the moment awaiting some paint! (I don't even have a Bretonnian army)
I love metal minis, the weight of them just feels right since when i started nearly everything was metal of some sort or another. I also love slightly goofy looking old minis and this guy fulfils both of these so i was looking forward to seeing what you did with him and I'm not disappointed. Cheers for all the content.
Am so excited for this! Will say that he was swapped out for a chaos lord/exalted hero that was made by the same sculptor, but super excited to see this, as I’ve been waiting to paint mine!
Andy, I am only a couple months into following your channel but I have to say that your content is Great! Very smooth and well produced and that says quite a bit considering the rate in which you post videos. Please keep up the good work and I look forward to more (ToW) content. Also if you had some of the 6th edition Wood Elves I'd love to see you paint them up!
@@MediocreHobbies Excellent - I had to invest in museum wax to keep my displayed minis in place after an accident a couple years ago, glad to know that fella's stable
I’ve said it before but that orange and black scheme is fantastic, I think you did a really good job on his face and I’m with you his hands are the only problem on this mini, they look a little more undead to me than noble knight hero. But agin you painted the mini very sympathetically so as to hide this, well done Andy.
Got so much to paint, but I am looking forward to giving this one a punt. Going for Macgregor modern hunting tartan colours myself, might actually try and do the tartan on the royal pegasus duke. The description on the GW website made me chuckle as someone thought he was holding a goblet not a pair of gloves.
He might be a Page rather than a Squire. Pages were between 7-14, Squires were around 14+. A Page ran messages, cleaned clothing and weapons, and learning the basics of combat. They also armed or dressed the lord to whom they served.
@@MediocreHobbies okay, good to know! Probably just going to buy the Two Thin Coats and use them/colormatch, I'm not attached to anything other than a matte finish. I wanted to add a few things: first, thanks for the tutorials on how to use contrast as base coats. I just burnt through a whole Infinity army within a week, and it felt great to have that whole force done. On your Patreon, what level would I need to purchase at if I wanted to get help on things like painting nmm from contrast base coats, or finding color tones to match real world palettes?
Very cool. I think ogres would be cool. The plastic kits are easily available - still in WHFB branded boxes I think - and they can now be used in, I think, any Old World army?
I just received my one of these in the post too, very happy to own it and also looking forward to painting it, his face is a little bit munted but that adds to the character and it’s also an accurate representation of humans, there are plenty of munted faces out there in the world 🤪
Pretty cool mini, but of course Skaven are always cooler, I see why they swapped it out. :P. Random idea - Since it’s so hard to get Old World minis from GW for most factions it would be rad if you did some content on completing armies with Mantic or other non-GW minis. 🐀
That paint scheme looks great mate. Really nice job. Your right about that hand though, looks quite bad. I think it's meant to be the back of his hand mostly but the way it's sculpted makes it look like long fingers. Would probably be worth filling in that area with green stuff to get rid of the ridges so the finger don't start until they are going around the handle.
@@MediocreHobbies would love to see the new black orks, saurus warriors, and aggradon lancers. Love your videos its the motivation needed to paint up the pile of shame.
cool model i agree with the hands they look wierd as hell....not sure the idea with the shield would work it seems a waste to chop up an entire model just to get the shield although if its resin maybe one of those hot wire cutter things would work to cut it off and you could replace it with a 3d printed one so you get the best of bother worlds......love the colour scheme
At first I was not a big fan of his face to be honest. The features look so exaggerated. But after seeing him being painted a lot more, the features make him look like a giga chad, so thats cool!
That's what I've read too. Someone dropped the big expensive mould and it broke. Remaking that would had cost very much, remember that this was 2004-2005 and they were hand making the moulds.
It's really not a bad looking model and that paint job is great. The face doesn't bother me. Those hands though. Oof. They're like hands sculpted by Rob Liefield.
Honestly I didn't like this miniature when I first saw it. Holding him in my hands now I actually think it's fairly solid, alot of my issues probably came down tomthe paint job in the promo pictures. Seeing your finished model too shows how solid of a sculpt it is, especially considering its age.
In general the people who hated this model are generally vain and spoilt rotten from all the plastic minis they buy for 40k and AOS. This is a fresh but retro take that I think stands out more than anything 40k has released in years.
The cost of those frames is greatly exaggerated. It's a piece of metal which is machined for a few hours. The outer circle used to be a plastic casting manufacturer. He claimed to of been a manager at one point in a plastic factory. He said a plastic mould typically cost around $10k to make, depending on the complexity. If it was just a basic thing like a kinder egg then it would be a lot cheaper obviously. So lets imagine GW are really inefficient at this process and it costs them 3x as much, so 30 grand Australian. Pretty expensive but not breaking the bank of a company the size of GW with their legion of loyal cucks.
@@calvinandhobbes730 I can't help but agree with his takes most of the time. I actually find it interesting though as he's a HH player and they are the biggest GW Whales in the hobby. He's spent so much cash on GW garbage and continues to do it, even though he feels like they endlessly fuck him over. I feel the same way but I simply stopped buying their products and have never bought a Forgeworld miniature from GW. When the regional price gouging got particularly egregious I moved to Forgeryworld for my models. Then in 2019 I started 3D printing in resin and there is no going back to GW now. The models are way better, with way more variety than GW can ever produce. Plus it costs a few cents for a unit of dudes instead of $100.
Remember that this was around 2004-2005. They were still sculpting 3-up models on green stuff. Could they have replaced the mould? Absolutely. But it is very costly and roi would be big. This was the era when armies still got new units in metal and most armies only had a few basic troops in plastic.
@@PaintsAreOp That hasn't stopped them from resurrecting the old skeleton horses from 1993, and the skeleton warriors from 97 or whatever year they came out. The mold lines on those old kits are truly horrendous. I've watched a few videos for nostalgia reasons of people opening them up and assembling. It's unbelievable that they are charging normal GW prices for those ancient and truly horrendous quality models.
