    About half A presses:
    The half A press notation is a special system used when counting A presses in segmented runs. If a specific segment of the run is started with the A button already held, such A press is counted as a "half A press". This is because in a complete playthrough, the half A press would just be held out and continued from an A press in an earlier segment, and it wouldn't necessitate pressing the A button. So the half A press is just a continuation of an A press that was performed earlier in the run.       thechucknorrisofNSMB The point of the video is to see how the game could be pushed to achieve the literal lowest A presses possible, not to get anything useful out of it. Werster’s speedrun is more exemplary as to where this could practically go. This video is just a lot cooler.

      You should check every backsprite in the game. Also, some more pokemon can be obtained early in the game through the Mew glitch, which depends on the special stat of opposing pokemon. Check all the pokemon you can get from the range of all special stats from each trainer's pokemon and the wild pokemon. The DVs of wild pokemon can be manipulated for, but they are all low level so the stats won't change much, if at all.

      Yes, immersion is the goal of this. I, too, like to arbitrary code execute my life so I can warp to work rather than walk. However, I'm not saving A presses so it only takes me 12 minutes.

    42 hours? Not quite the 71 required for Bowser in the Fire Sea 0x, but you're getting there.
    Phenomenal work. Seems like, with Mario 64, I can at least know what to expect, but here, anything is possible.

      Oh, you think that takes awhile? Getting the switch star in the gomboss stage in SM64DS with 0x B presses requires spawning objects for over _1000 years_ until the 32-bit object ID counter overflows, allowing you to spawn a coin with the same ID as the star and collect it with Yoshi.
      Oh, and that technique is used repeatedly throughout the run.

      ENCHANTMEN You think that’s a lot? The RNG manipulation to make the platforms in TTC form a pedrospot would take so long, the earth would be long gone before we could do it, even if you were speeding up the game. If this strategy was possible (it obviously isn’t, seeing how long it takes) you would have to do it more than once.

    Am I the only one who thinks that glitch runs are way cooler than just dry speed runs? When you do a glitch run it goes beyond just beating the game, it can shows an excellence in understanding how the game works on a coder's level. ACE runs are the coolest of all.

      I agree with this in spirit - as a ROM hacker (gen 3 only tho) I like seeingnthe in depth stuff but as a fan of the franchise, I prefer to see actual gameplay - for me the strategy I like to see is more about the actual battles, which there isnt a whole lot of in older generation glitch runs

    Hey there ZZAZZ,
    I know it's not a guarantee that you'll see this comment, but I have a non-Pokemon request. I've been looking for an explanation for the Age of Empires - Age of Kings DS cartridge-bricking save glitch. Essentially, if you have a profile that is under 4 characters long, the "Save & Quit" option will brick the cartridge. The developers were unable to fix this glitch because it apparently required them to reprogram the engine itself. I haven't been able to find anyone who actually looked into this on the level of the game's code to find out why something as simple as a 2 or 3 letter profile could destroy a cartridge. Of course, the reason the cartridge is bricked is because save data is so corrupted it can't load, but why?
    If this is out of your field of knowledge (or interest for that matter), would there be anyone else you could refer me to? I would really appreciate it as I'm finding difficult to let this go lol. Thanks!
    (if anyone else that sees this comment has any possible explanations or someone who could provide me with an explanation, let me know!)

      Yeah, I was always confused by that glitch. It seemed like you should be able to at least FORCE the game to recognize the 3 letter name and just... not let you use it.

      I'm really interested now too. My best guess without seeing any code is this:
      The DS uses a 32-bit word size and data is moved in chunks of 4 bytes each. A name with three characters or less would fit into a single word, including the string terminator. Perhaps the routine which loads the save name looks for the terminator starting from the second word, and never finds it.

    Can you upload a savestate of the glitched overworld (the one that wrongwarps)? Preferably bgb or sameboy, but if you only have one for bizhawk, that's fine too, I guess.

    Very interesting how the audio slow down glitch is triggered. I wonder if there's a constant or something that can trigger it in other circumstances
    Also, I'm very interested with. This new glitch world. It'd be interesting to see what can be done with it or if we can discover anything from it

    1. Achieve ACE
    2. Use ACE to overwrite the OAM DMA routine, so that if the SELECT button bit of the ButtonsPressed/ButtonsHeld/whatever address is active, you unset it and set the A button bit instead.
    3. Use ACE to start a new game without turning off the game.
    4. Start the new game
    5. Pokemon Red in 0x A presses ???

    I think it’s funny instead of simply setting the values to $00 $01 and $02 it increases and decreases. Maybe that was a hardware limitation? It’s pretty funny that it allows glitches like this though. Thanks for the super in depth technical explanations!

      Invalid map script $06 falls into an infinite loop of attempting to display a glitch textbox. Because the map script is responsible for detecting trainer encounters, trainers will no longer notice the player when invalid map script $06 is in effect.

    That loss of A presses in the Rival battle feels like it has to be avoidable. I know the 34 in the current route is absolutely necessary, but there has to be some other payload that would work... what's the minimum attack IV needed for a 3 turn battle?

      Ah, I got things backwards didn't I. The goal is to lose in 3 turns, not win? That feels even more viable.
      (IIRC, all enemy trainers have the same DVs, though, so no manipulation can be done.)

      Yeah, trainer DVs are hardcoded based on trainer class. Only wild pokemon have randomized DVs.

      Trainer Pokémon have $9888 DVs (the 9 is so that the HP DV, which is calculated from the other four depending on their even/odd-ness, will be 8 and not 0) and 0 in all EVs (it doesn't depend on trainer class), so the same Pokémon will always have the same stats-a trainer's level 5 Squirtle will have 20HP, 10 Attack, 12 Defense, 10 Speed, and 10 Special. A level 5 Charmander with $34C9 DVs and 0 in all EVs (as in this video) will have 19HP, 10 Attack, 9 Defense, 12 Speed, and 10 Special. All attacks used in the rival fight are physical attacks, so 10/9 (for enemy attacks) and 10/12 (for player attacks) will be used. Squirtle's Tackle deals 5 damage if maximized without getting a crit, and 6 damage if maximized _with_ a critical. (Yeah, crit mechanics suck in this game.) Three of these will leave your Charmander with 1HP left, so a 3HKO isn't possible.
      The $1024 Squirtle from the 69x A press video has 20HP, 9 Attack, 11 Defense, 9 Speed, and 10 Special, while a $0000 Squirtle (if you got _that_ unlucky or something) has 19HP, 9 Attack, 11 Defense, 9 Speed, and 10 Special. A $FFFF Squirtle (maxed-out stats for when you just got it) has 20HP, 11 Attack, 13 Defense, 10 Speed, and 11 Special.
      20 10 12 10 10 - $9888 Squirtle (all trainer L5 Squirtles).
      20 09 11 09 10 - $1024 Squirtle (69x video).
      19 09 11 09 10 - $0000 Squirtle (the $1024 Squirtle at least had a good HP DV of 8).
      20 11 13 10 11 - $FFFF Squirtle (maxed-out stats).
      Your Charmander starts off with Scratch and Growl when you get it, and these moves have 35 and 40 PP. As move PP comes immediately after DVs, you'll necessarily get `inc hl` and `jr z, wBoxMon1PP+3` (a relative jump to the same place execution would continue if it hadn't jumped, how useful), which then moves on into data on your second box Pokémon (which doesn't exist, making it all zero or all $FF, and I can't be bothered to figure it out right now, but $FF would lead to the rst $38 crash, so I'll assume it's zero and move on), and then your third through 20th, then getting to box Pokémon OT names. Let's go through these:
      RED - sub a,c | add a,h | add a,e | ld d,b | ...
      ASH - add a,b | sub a,d | add a,a | ld d,b | ...
      JACK - adc a,c | add a,b | add a,d | adc a,d
      BLUE - [...more arithmetic register operations and ld d,b]
      GARY - add a,(hl) | [...more of those]
      JOHN - adc a,c | adc a,(hl) | [...more of those]
      And then, partway through the 20th box Pokémon's OT name, we get to OAM, which is subject to locking and will very probably have an $FF somewhere that will crash the game.

    How about trying the challenge in Pokemon Sun/Moon/USUM? There is a lot of cutscenes, but with lower screen operating for battle and growing berries with Pokepelago, you could do way more in the way of actually playing the game. Once you obtain healing and Leppa berries you don't have to use the pokemon centers, and you can use the free pokeballs to get enough of a team.

    I feel like I remember routes of this game where people use Trainer Fly to get like, a level 100 Gengar off of that trainer in Viridian Forest. Could you just do the Trainer Fly twice?     Could it be possible to execute deathwarp mew glitch before getting to map script? Like, grabbing a lvl 100 nidoking or would that negate A presses?

    What if you go past Viridian Forest after the 0 ERROR glitch, catch another pokémon that could possibly set the values in VRAM to something useful, and return afterwards?

    I have a question unrelated to this video: The Gameboy can only display 10 sprites per line. NPCs and the player are 2 sprites wide. What would happen if you line up 5 NPCs + the player? This might be possible in Cerulean City or Celadon City.

    Can't you catch a Pokémon after Viridian Forest to get a good jump value or whatever, and then come back and use it for the glitch ? Either way, this is awesome work dude, keep it up =D

    Hey, the beginning of the $F8FF glitch setup reminds me a whole lot about the 0 Error glitch. Are they related in some way?

      Huskies Plays They both involve invalid map scripts, but the 0 error glitch is a result of the glitch textbox that the game attempts to display in this state
