Thank you very much for the response and your many insightful comments. Here is the answer to the most common remarks you had: → "When did you get Celebi/Mew?" - In part 2 of the series ( ua-cam.com/video/57F9W3db3HM/v-deo.html ) where I play Gold, Red and Crystal. The 2 Mythical Pokémon are both caught near the end. → "You should have used XXX Pokémon for the Beasts!" - One important thing to consider: in Gen 2, a sleeping Pokémon CANNOT flee. Making Mean Look completely useless. The only 2 factors that matter are the base Speed of the Pokémon and the accuracy of its sleep move, which influenced my choice a lot. Also, Jumpluff is SOOOOO cute. That's the main reason. → "Why didn't you catch Suicine in Crystal?" - The furthest I got in Crystal was Ecruteak City. My main version for this challenge was Pokémon Silver, so I did not have the opportunity to do it. → "If you played Gold several times, why only one Master Ball?" - I went back to Gold several times, but it was on the same savefile, so I only had 1 extra Master Ball at my disposal. I... kinda... used it on... Teddiursa. Yeah. You can watch me make that mistake in a previous video. It was dumb, but coming from Gen 4, I was convinced roaming Pokémon were not going to be an issue, and that I would not even need 1 Master Ball, let alone 2. How wrong I was. Once again, thanks a lot for the kind words, corrections and tips. I try to read every comment. If you ever get a thumbs up out of nowhere, it's most likely me :'D
Didn’t at all want my question about the Master Ball to shadow your accomplishment-it’s incredibly impressive! On another note, I’d love to route Gen 3 with you if you’re ever looking for help! :)
Just about finished my living pokedex on yellow(120 out of 151, all on original game cartridges) and going to be starting gold, silver, and crystal probably in about a week. started doing this mid july. As im typing this, i just finished the whole pokedex on blue and i finished red 3 weeks ago.
If you want a simple piece of advice for Gen 3 onwards. Catch a smeargle. Smeargle learns Sketch. You can sketch the following three moves: Spore, Ingrain, False Sweep. This should help in theory to stop in the FR/LG games the pokemon from escaping.
I like how when you complete Oak's entire life's work for him, encountering legends and Pokemon people didn't even think existed, myths that even Oak didn't know about, he just gives you a pat on the back. Like dude pretty sure this would warrant the Pokemon equivalent of a Nobel Prize but ok.
@@Lyra emerald has always the goat Pokémon game to me. Battle frontier of course. Sprites look awesome. Music is great. The map is unique to any other region. And the best legendary trio imo.
I was also thrown by this. as a very formative trauma of my childhood, it was probably less obvious than it feels to me. but they didn’t bulbapedia movesets or anything? That’s dark.
@@matthewcurry3565btw it always feels like the 1st legendary beast is easier to catch and the last one was so hard that I always used Master Ball for him
I did that challenge too, living dex in gen 2. The true inducing pain was when I realized how full my boxes would be with the living dex. It was a nightmare to order the boxes in numerical order. Gen 3 boxes system is a blessing.
This series went from a "This seems like a neat challenge" to "Oh my god this is a nightmare." It's been quite the journey to watch this from start to finish. I found your channel thanks to a recommendation about the gen 2 catching mechanics video, but been enjoying the content you make quite a lot.
I am happy you stuck with me through the entire challenge :') It may seem like I complain a lot, but in the end, the Living Pokédex really is a fun challenge. This video focused a lot on the most frustrating aspects, but I would lie if I said I didn't have a blast going through it. Turning the breeding grind into an "Egg day stream" was super fun, watching the footage of me losing my mind over roaming Pokémon was hilarious, and having people help me figure out better strategies was really rewarding. Hopefully, you will enjoy the upcoming videos as well!
@@luposdreyar2899 using hypnosis or sleep powder works better. since they keep status effects and damage throughout each encounter you can sleep lock them by running away befor they wake up. makes it way easier to catch them.
That's what I expected to happen. That mean look fail was painful. I caught Suicune and Raikou, gave Entei the finger and that was it. Roaming Legends are the worst.
Gotta say, I spent like half of this video waiting for the part where you find out the Legendary Beasts can flee while asleep, but it turns out that's only in Gen 4. But man that would've been funny after learning the hard way about how Mean Look works and the beasts having Roar.
At least its not not heart gold and soul silver where if the roaming legendary uses roar it's gone... Forever unless you saved before the encounter that is.
That was actually part of my strategy trying to catch them early in HeartGold. The one good thing about roamers is that they won’t attack unless trapped, so you technically get to freely set them up without retaliation. Then getting to flee while asleep means that I can set that up early too, meaning I get 4 free turns-and thus 3-4 catch attempts-before they can even attempt to nuke the trapper that’s half their level. Funnily enough, for all the effort I put into this…in two different files, I didn’t even use them all that much. Which isn’t to say they aren’t useful: catching Raikou ASAP can be huge when the sea routes between Olivine and Cianwood are still coming up, and Entei should be good for Pryce and the Ice Path. By the time you get to Clair, though, they both kinda fall off. Doesn’t really help that, even as a casual campaign only player, I’m not impressed by their starting movesets.
I did similar in gen 3 with latias and latios, but then I found this little guy called WOOOOBBUFFET, and the day was saved. Wondered why wobbuffet was such a useless Pokemon until I realized its skill of not allowing anything to teleport, or flee.
I still remember playing the shit out of Leaf Green after my older brother had finished it. Still remember my Crobat who had evolved out of spite (yeah, I can also recall where that happened). Then, as I was roaming around aimlessly, I encountered Raikou. I knew it wasn't something normal, and I managed to catch it with my mean look Crobat. It's been 18 whole years, I was 6 years old, and I can still recall the exact tile in which that happened. Talk about memories
@GiegueX it's fun to find ways to make difficult pokemon submit and put them in their place in a lowly regular pokeball where they belong only to keep them locked away in a box like a trophy. Those 3 are my proudest captures. Second to a self-destructive now Golem that I used a damp pokemon on. Rather die then get caught? NOT ON MY WATCH. Oh and galar atricuno was fun. He would die by hail cause he's pretending to be an ice type but isn't so I put a nice pair of boots on him. Same with ghosts I couldn't get a good scrappy false swiper so I gave them a ring targets. EVEN IF YOUR DEAD I WILL BEAT YOU AN INCH OF YOUR LIFE! Pokemon healing to much? Spite! Can't Paralyze an electric type? Soak! You rebellious little critters don't know your struggles only make me more excited! Everyone is equal here regular lowly pokeballs for all. Know your place! Oh you say your a god?! NOT TO ME!
Nice job! I also completed gen 2 and have a few notes on the legendary beasts. 1. Mahogany town is a good location to find them but route 38 from ecruteak city is slightly more efficient 2. Super repels are more efficient then max repels. Maxes last to long 3. Manually checking the beasts locations is only more efficient with specific routing. It's better to just keep soft resetting after your super repel runs out. 4. There's a song on the radio that slightly ups your efficiency 5. Jynx is better to use as it learns lovely kiss, I'm pretty sure it can be caught at level 40 and I believe it also knows mean look 6. You were right to use the master ball on the yellow one because it is the hardest to catch. The other 2 present little difficulty when properly prepared. You'll get an encounter every 2-5minutes on route 38 and they can't flee against a properly kitted out jynx. 7. Info on legendary beasts is slim to none so I don't blame you for not knowing. I found the gen 2 shiny hunting community was quite knowledgeable on the subject. 7. There's also a lot of very niche info like roamers will never go to the last route you were on or they have a 1/27(I think?) chance to just randomly teleport across the map but I'm not an expert in that regard. 10. Happy to see your doing gen 3. That's when things really start to get hard. I'd advice that you start off with a regional dex in ruby/sapphire. And, if you value your time, DO NOT USE EMERALD. when I did a gen 3 national dex I did sapphire regional dex--->leafgreen regional dex----> johto cleanup in emerald---> ho'oh and lugia in the gamecube games. Johto cleanup can be done in the gamecube games in much less time but I wanted to only use the spinoffs as little as possible so I did that in emerald which easily added 20ish hours to my run since it requires 3 completions of the emerald regional dex
I remember feeling so frustrated as a kid when I couldn’t figure out how to catch those last three. Raikou was particularly elusive for me. Seeing you complete this was so satisfying!!!
I remember my own old strat for catching the roaming beasts was to have a level 40 Haunter with Mean Look and Hypnosis, and I set myself up at the edge between routes 38 and 39 (the two routes between Ecruteak and Olivine). I chose that spot because both routes have grass and can have the roaming beasts appear on them, so instead of changing locations twice by going into and out of a town, I could just change locations once (by going from 38 to 39, or from 39 to 38) between each pokedex check.
@@sweatyburger it does.. but using haunter will save you a turn coz you don't need to switch.. not sire if you can eve train on silver to make parasect speed way much higher so you have a 100% rate on putting them to sleep with spore..
For those asking about Celebi, I thought I'd add that it's possible Lyra either used the Celebi egg glitch or the coincase glitch method. It would be awesome to see videos of him doing one and the Gen 1 Mew glitch.
@@princesspikachu3915 Maybe. I remember I had heard about that not long ago. I'm just not sure how it works. Is it a different copy of Crystal for 3Ds and then you use the Pokemon Bank or something to get it back to the older games? I'm a bit behind on some things, I'm afraid. XD
@@raina1848 Not really. In the 3DS version after you beat the Elite 4 you go to the Pokémon Center in Goldenrod City and when you go to the stairs on the left a lady will approach you and give you the GS Ball. Then you go and take the GS Ball to Kurt in Azalea Town and wait a day. Then go and find Kurt outside and he will mention that the forest is reacting or something. Head into the forest and use cut on the tree and then save before approaching the shrine. Celebi will appear and then you can catch it. It can even be shiny hunted if you are patient.
Seems like he should played the Crystal version from the 3DS VC since that actually officially added in the Celebi event despite that event not originally leaving Japan. That way the only glitch needed to win should be for getting Mew in gen 1 and then trading it to gen 2.
This was my dream as a little child with a Game Boy Color. My very first Pokémon game was Silver (which I still have). I was born in Argentina, and the information about these games was scarce and very difficult to find in the '90s. I only had one schoolmate who had a Game Boy, Pokémon Gold, and a Link Cable. Both of us had no clue about trading and evolutions. We were just having fun as kids. Nothing technical. I was never able to catch 'em all. Watching this series of videos somehow makes me revive that childhood dream, but I think that Professor Oak's response feels like a joke. All those hours and effort just to get such little recognition? Maybe this game was not created for that purpose. Maybe it was all about making you look for all 251 forever and ever. Anyway, congrats man! You beat the system.
Knowing you were able to relive those great moments though these videos makes me very happy :'D In the end, the lack of rewards for completing the Pokédex don't bother me that much. After all, the important part is the fun you had on the way, whether you caught all the Pokémon or spent all your time with a school friend with no idea what to do ;')
A few years ago I started my pokedex completion challenge in Pokemon firered, emerald, red and platinum Completed in all of the but abused a lot of the glitches and fast forward Your videos have inspired me to start that challenge but with glitches and fast forward It's like someone's with me in this challenge now and i don't wanna stay behind my rival ive already completed the gen 1 living dex and I'm just behind the insanity part of gen 2 And I'm gonna catch up to you someday Edit:i completed gen 2!! On to gen 3 friend
I did that. I did catch all pkmn up to 1000+ in every game up to sword and shield it's not that hard tbh just consumes time. I also have them all in every evolution step. Also found some shinys on my way. Was fun tbh to collect .
Good luck with Gen 3. From what I recall if gen 2 was painful, then gen 3 is just a torture (due to stuff like your gen 2 nemesis' - but they're worse - not only you need to complete FR/LG 3 different times, but also I recall they are perma gone if they roar). But seriously, good luck and can't wait to see how it will go. It seems like Living dexes are fun to watch (if painful to complete, I only did it once in Mystery Dungeon R/B RT, Chansey there was a nightmare, same with Celebi, so I respect you for enduring the worst parts).
Man, those painful memories of trying to catch those three beasts in Gold still haunt me and it was more than 20 years ago. Congrats on finishing your living dex, I'll be waiting for gen 3!
As someone with probably close to 1k hours in gen 2, I had a hearty laugh at your original plan to catch the 3 doggos. Oh you sweet summer child... lol. I wish I could go back and play these, so I love the content!
Congrats on completing the challenge!! You've definitely become one of my favorite creators over the coarse of the first two challenges. I'm always so excited to see you have a new video up and see your progress. I'm looking forward to watching you tackle gen 3 ^^
There are a lot of amazing content creators on UA-cam, especially Pokémon ones. To learn I am among someone's favorites is a fantastic feeling. Thank you very much for the vote of confidence :') I will do my best to keep it this way once we start Gen 3!
That ending had a transition so good I cried. You pulled off the transitions in this video so well, and I'm really glad I got to watch it. It's been very cool to watch your development as a creator over this challenge, as the Lyra of episode one was not the same one that pulled off this sick video. I can't wait to watch you go insane again in Gen 3. See you then!
I try to improve every single video, whether it is the voice-over, the script-writing or the video editing. If you see that and appreciate it, then it makes me incredibly happy :') I hope you will keep enjoying the content as I keep improving!
@@Lyra I appreciate every part of your videos, and it's very apparent that you put a lot of effort into each one. I'm excited to see how you figure out getting the Gen 2 Pokemon in Gen 3!
I am still so proud to have achieved this as a child. was a lot of work but seeing this journey with children's eyes it was just an enjoyable adventure. probably had at least about 300 hours in the game though xD
Ah yes. It's been a great ride so far! As someone who's doing a similer run though of pokemon games, I can say that this has been so helpful! Also I'm very happy to see you come so far! I first saw this channel when you did your Red living dex run. Now, you're here! (Also that ending. As someone who's done that before, good luck.)
Contrary to Parasect, which has a 100% accurate sleeping move in Spore. Sleep is often enough to catch a Pokémon at max HP. From Gen 3 onwards you could also use Butterfree which gets an accuracy boost for Sleep Powder due to its ability, but abilities weren't a thing in Gen 1 and 2 so Parasect is the next best stat inducer
Nope. Mean look and spider web do nothing. They just roar you away. If you don't put them to sleep first turn and into red bar before they wake up you have lost 😅
Normally AI will not use Roar on Gengar, because normal moves do not affect ghosts. So, you can use Mean Look to trap the beast, try Hypnosis how many times do you need, then catch it.
21:50 that’s how you know why this mechanics were wonderful. The difficulty of finding, encounter and catching those dogs just make bigger the emotion and the triumph feeling when the poke ball stops moving. It’s just magic.
Sapphire was my first pokemon game. And now that I know that gen 3 dex completion is way harder than most other games in the series, I wish you much luck in that challenge
here’s something important I feel you should know, which you may not already because of your surprise at Entei and Raikou having Roar: In FireRed and LeafGreen, if Entei or Raikou uses Roar, they stop existing due to a glitch. In order to catch them after this, you need to reset the game back to before you triggered their roaming and retrigger it.
Ah, fell for the classic Mean Look trick I see. I learned about this the hard way too when I first played HGSS like 2 years back. The text really does make it seem that the Pokemon can't escape permanently but no.
Right? Just changing the text to "[Your Pokémon] prevents [Wild Pokémon] from fleeing" would avoid the issue altogether. I mean it's not that big a deal, you mess up once at the worst time and it will never happen again, but the game does set you up for failure!
Hey, I wanted to give some advice for people that want to complete the living dex (or just catching the beasts in general) that I found while catching the roaming beasts earlier this year: First of all, I recommend using your master ball on Raikou. Raikou has quick attack, so it can flee before you are even able to attack with any pokemon. Crobat has a higher base speed than Raikou and Jumpluff, so the reason that Raikou was able to flee was because it was able to use quick attack and have a priority flee. Also, all the beasts have roar, so keep that in mind. A pokemon I highly recommend for this would be Gengar because of the high base speed, hypnosis, and mean look. If you can't get Gengar, Jynx would be another good pokemon because of mean look and lovely kiss (higher accuracy than hypnosis), but you would need to make sure you pump it full of speed EVs (0 IV Jynx filled with 10 Carbos has the same speed stat as a 15 IV Raikou, so you might need to grind on a few wild pokemon as well). Haunter has the same base speed as Jynx , but has the less accurate hypnosis. Jumpluff is another good option if you don't care about mean look (as you can see from this video), but I prefer using mean look. It is up to you though! It is still your challenge! Finally, a few places online said that going back and forth between two routes actually decreases your chance of finding the legendary beasts, so a good place to grind for them is biking in a circle between Violet City -> route 32 -> Ruins of Alph -> route 36 -> Violet city and so on. After switching to the circle method, I was able to find the beasts in minutes after my old back and forth method would sometimes take 30+ minutes to get an encounter. Good luck fellow trainers! Feel free to add onto this if you have tips of your own! Also, amazing content Lyra! I've been binging these the past few days, and I'm super excited for the gen 3 living dex challenge!
I honestly had so much fun with this series, and the nostalgia of remembering everything I did as a child… keep up the awesome work! I’ll be waiting for the Hoenn adventures 😊
Super excited to see you work on Gen 3! I started a Pokémon Red playthrough in February but decided to turn it into a Living Pokédex after watching your videos. Catching all 386 is gonna be a huge task. Good luck!
I don't actually know what gen we're on or how many mons there are, or if regional variations count as seperate mons ... But good luck with gen 10 or whatever.
Lyra, you seem to just have a way not only with words but your editing and how you tell this story of your journey for the complete living dex. Also, that announcement at the end… SO EXCITED
If you watched the Gen 1 Living Dex, you probably noticed the editing was very simple and the commentary was unscripted. My main focus while making the Gen 2 videos was telling an interesting, fun and entertaining story. After all, anybody can get a Living Dex, what makes mine different is HOW I completed it. In practice, it meant I skipped some relevant parts while drawing attention to less important but more fun aspects of the challenge. Making the journey interesting through a well-written script complemented by quality editing was the most important thing for me during this series, so knowing you saw and appreciated that means a lot to me. Thank you very much :') Also... I'M SUPER EXCITED AS WELL!
@@Lyra I saw the Gen 1 and Gen 2 Living Dex videos back to back and I noticed the huge difference in editing and commentary in the two series. In the Gen 2 videos, it was more concise and to the point, while still being more entertaining to watch. Definitely more a fan of that, keep it up! PS: I also ABSOLUTELY want to see Gen 3 Living Dex!
I’m also gonna be attempting this challenge but with Crystal as my main game and with the assistance of Pokémon Stadium 2. All this information is fantastic and super helpful, I adore this series!
Ah the roaming legendaries, so FUn to catch. The way we got them back in the day was to use Ash Sketchem, a level 40 smeargle with mean look, spore, and false swipe. It still took forever because the beasts would wake up after a turn or two and immediately use roar but it was the most successful strategy floating around school at the time.
this is a really good series, i think your approach in telling the story of "i beat this videogame but there is a bullshit twist" is very unique - I really like that you bring mostly unknown game data and sometimes needs to do some micromanagement with it. (I say that because challenges are everywhere, such that they are not unique anymore - so the way the story is told is kinda becoming more important than the story itself)
This was awesome to watch dude. And It’s so cool to see that you went into this just as a fan trying to play the game. Didn’t look things up ahead of time to make things easier. Just truly played the game and learned as you went. Great video fr. Keep it up 👍
@@shytendeakatamanoir9740 You even have to play the Colosseum and XD games. It's the only way to get some Johto 'mons, specially without a means to the event tickets.
It is technically possible but pretty frustrating. Getting all the gen I starters with only Leaf Green (which is mandatory because of Slowpoke) would require you to fully finish the game 3 times in order to trade with RSE. You can also use only RS or SE because you can get the remaining Pokemon from the GameCube games that you have to play to get Lugia, Ho-Oh, Jirachi, and an easy way to get the Johto starters and the legendary beasts. So you can play only Sapphire, Emerald, LeafGreen, Colosseum and XD, but adding FireRed is much more practical. You have to use Sapphire because Lunatone is exclusive, while you can get Zangoose from XD.
At 10:23 you reminded me of a bitter lesson in game freak's deviousness, but instead of fleeing, the doggo straight up used ROAR on me lol. Good times.
Im on the path on completing my Master living pokedex and I can tell you for sure it was a painful experience. it took me 5hrs + on hunting and finding Entei, get his Hp in range and dealing incredible unlucky rng in crystal. I had to beat gold for a dam super rod only obtainable after beating the elite for a dam remoraid to trade to crystal. I use my masterball on Raiku and now realizing after reading a comment on this video i should of just sent over the masterball in gold to catch the dam Entei also 🙃. Your videos kept me sane on this gen 2 journey knowing i wasnt the only one frustrated
I saw you showed Kingdra when saying you finally got your second Kingdra, that one is a Dragon Scale and I forgot sometimes too! I enjoyed the video and watched the whole thing :D Also I think Raikou ran that first that one Battle, not because it was faster... It used Quick Attack there for got priority on it Fleeing the Battle instead since Quick Attack is a priority move :)
Another strategy I've used: Scyther with "False Swipe," move also helped me to catch them. I put them to Sleep, Mean Look them, False Swipe them, then Ultra Ball them. Good video man! Your hard work paid off!
Honestly once I learned the Mahogany method hunting the roamers became a joy. It's completely understandable that people find it tedious but I guess I got nostalgia goggles because I think it is such a thrill. It's one of those rare times in pokemon where I feel like I'm actually being challenged, and it's so much more fulfilling than catching legendaries that the game leads you to through its story.
Most of the playthroughs were only far enough to unlock trading and trade the starter, no real reason to continue all the way to the master ball Edit: whoops, didn't notice that within the video he's using Gold again, my bad.
It may seem like a cheap cop out but that is exactly what GameFreak intended when making these games. You get so frustrated, you need to buy the two versions and use all things to your disposal to catch the legendaries... ...Or you would be like me and realise that when you use the clone glitch, you can copy whatever item the Pokémon is holding too and make enough master balls to catch everything under the sun
This video series shows me just how much better the PC UI is starting Gen 3. I cannot imagine trying to sort through a Gen 1 or 2 PC... (Also, nice inclusion of Ghost Trick music!)
I mean I look at it like, if I'm scared to run because of some pokemon giving me a mean look, I wouldn't be scared anymore if it was put away into a ball
The roaming beasts segments took me back to my own frustrations back in 2002 when I was playing these games. The only difference is that there was no better way. It was deal with it or don't. :P
@@yaziyo it’s not cheating since you weren’t using a Game Shark, Action Replay, Game Genie, or other random device. The glitch is part of the game and anyone can use it so it’s not unfair or anything like that. It’s not cheating if it’s part of the game even if it wasn’t intended.
@@princesspikachu3915 Using unintended mechanics especially for a huge benefit is in fact cheating, not really unfair anyway considering this is just single player stuff affecting no one.
@@rpgfanatic9719 It was never intended by the programmers but I don’t consider the same type of cheating as paying money for a device to get benefits that can’t be obtained without the device. Glitches can be performed by anyone and some are very simple. Some glitches affect the game badly too if performed wrong like the Mew glitch freezing up if you aren’t enough tiles away from the Slowpoke Youngster in Gen 1. And that glitch is STILL in the Virtual Console games but cannot be sent to Pokémon Bank and Home without another more complicated glitch. But again it’s a free unintentional glitch that anyone can use and therefore it’s fair as long as you’re not using anything other the game itself. Paying for an advantage that not everyone has is the actual cheating in my eyes.
Really underrated channel. I’m going through the gen 2 living dex and honestly it’s nice motivation. I’m enjoying playing gen 2 while watching this vid.
If you actually do gen 3, just know that there's a roar glitch with the roaming legendaries. Could make you have a very bad day if you accidentally saved after.
19:32 going to a town for this is not a good plan. The best hunting ground is the spot where Sudowoodo blocks the way. There are 2 routes and 1 town adjacent to each other and they are in the middle of the map, so the chances for the beasts to run there is higher. You can effectively force them to go into either of these 2 locations and use violet town if you need to "skip a turn". Or the ruins of Alph entrance to completely reset them.
Back in the day, I did a living Dex on Pokémon Silver too, but with another crazy rules, like all Pokémon have my OT name and all should be male except for the ones that can't be, I remember that was a long and fun journey, at the end the only Pokémon that I need to complete the Pokédex was Kindra, I did it and was so proud and exited about my accomplish; then the day after I reach that the battery of the cartridge died, so.. I never tried again another living Dex but watching your video bring me back some joy of those days, maybe I'll do it again but this time with Pokémon Crystal. By the way, I found more easy to organize the Pokémon with Pokémon Stadium 2 that help me a lot with the mission. great content I really enjoy it.
When I was a kid I remember being so frustrated with the roaming legendaries running I trained a Haunter to a high level and used mean look, only for it to first turn Roar. I was so mad lol, so i understand your frustration here
I completed the 251 pokedex on original hardware back in the day. Had to send in the game to the Nintendo club to get Celeby. I cannot explain how sad I felt when I discovered that the game used a battery for saving the game. 400+ hours in game gone.
@@cellP8 Bruh I grew up playing gen 3. You have to literally play like 5 Pokémon games to get every Pokémon lol. Not to mention to get HO-OH you have to play Mt. Battle; also there’s no day and night cycle so Umbreon and Espeon can only be gotten in Colosseum. GF was so wack in gen 3.
This was a fun journey that I am extremely glad someone else did, so I didn't have to. Godspeed Lyra, looking forward to whatever you look at next - pokemon or otherwise! coughcoughcoughmonsterrancher2coughcough
Lyra, your sense of humor is pretty great. You got a good few chuckles out of me throughout all of your videos and when you topped this one off with fighting Red I couldn't help but smile. Your videos on the catching formulas for each game have been entertaining AND insightful and seeing you dedicate yourself this much throughout the living dex series has been a blast. I hope you see a lot of success because your content is a lot of fun.
Now onto the funniest generation when it comes to catching them all: generation 3! The bare minimum you would need to make a living dex in generation 3 are: a GameCube, a GameCube controller, a GBA (DS wont work, not compatible with GBA trading devices), a Gamecube to GBA adapter, Emerald, both Fire Red and Leaf Green, XD Gale of Darkness (Ruby and saphire pokemon not in emerald can be caught here and it is required for Lugia (without Navel rock event)), and Colosseum (just for Ho-oh, assuming no navel rock event (completing fresh mt battle attempts are required for jhoto starters in XD gale of darkness so it would be wise to get the easier to obtain mid stage jhoto starters here instead if you're already playing this for the Ho-oh)). Remember there is no way to get gen 1 and 2 pokemon onto the 3rd gen games so this isn't just for the sake of a strict gen 3 only challenge, all of this was actually necessary for anyone who wanted all of the pokemon in one of these games! Also, out of all the games I mentioned, outside of trading directly between Fire Red and Leaf Green, you actually had to beat these games fully to connect to another one of the games so have fun playing through the entire game again for one time pokemon like the Hoenn starters!
I love breeding in the newer games (specifically USUM and SwSh) but I had no idea what a pain breeding was in the older games! Yikes, you brave soul xD
They are not executed poorly, these mechanics have aged poorly. Big difference. Back in the early 2000's the color follow ups to RBY, were quite frankly amazing. Breeding opened up trading first-stage evolution to your starter, without having to restart the game, just think of how amazing that is.
Just because something is better than before doesn't mean it is good. Sure, I'd rather be in a car crash that breaks my limbs instead of killing me, but I'd much rather NOT be in one at all, you know? The breeding is clearly done badly, so much so the very next game introduced multiple tweaks to fix it. Same for post elite 4 content. Same for roaming legendaries.
I haven't finished the video yet, are you gonna do Gen III? I've done that, and it's genuinely pretty fun with all the different games and routing options
I remember using fast balls gave me the greatest chance of catching the legendary dogs/any pokemon that fled on its first turn ie Abra. I used to fly to my locations to change legendary locations aswell. Great video, and congratulations ❤🎉
Gen 2 (Gold) was my first pokemon game. Since then, I have to do a play through every year for nostalgia sake. I just beat Lance with my own 3 Dragonite, Typhlosion, Umbreon and Lapras. It took far to long to breed and raise each Dragonite but it was all worth it when they demonslished Lance's hacked and underleveled ones. I wish game freak would make another game that captured the charm that Gen 2 had (regardless of the flaws this Gen had). Everything recently just feels soulless.
Fun to watch you work this out, without any internet knowledge etc as a kid I came up with my own strategy. Haunter / Gengar - meanlook (always to begin), and maybe hypnosis or another TM which gave me sleep. I had another damage move and got all three down to a slither of HP too. Always started with meanlook, but never switched because I worked out meanlook ended. I accepted the risk of roar turn 1, on average I hit more sleeps after meanlook, I don't recall understanding speed mechanics well. Also I didn't know the locations refreshed walking between routes, so I'd fly to a pokecenter and check the map, walk away, fly back, until they appeared in the grass next to me. I didn't use your repell idea either so I just had to run away from a lot of commons! Alas I caught all 3 eventually, it felt amazing and this video really took me back to that time and grind. Thanks for the memories!
The pain of the catching the Legendary Beasts in their own game is real! I wish my kid self would have seen this and get inspiration from your pain! Still good job man!
I haven't finished the video yet, I'm watching you try to catch the legendary dogs, BUT... this whole video has been SO CATHARTIC. I completed a living Dex in Gen 2 back in the day when I was young and barely understood the games mechanics in the first place! It was SUCH a pain but felt so proud to complete the Dex :D
Wow, man! You've come a long way! I remember when there was no script, and you were just talking for a hour. You can definetly see the improvement from the first video to this. There are many people who do the living dex, but they just recap it. So you will definetly grow even more!
The legendaries in this game are such a ridiculous ordeal that they alone are enough to deter me from attempting this. I simply lack the patience. Congrats for pulling it off!
This is hands down one of the best videos I have ever watched lately pertaining to old classical pokemon games andd definitely has brought back "lovely" memories of my struggles when I first played Pokemon Gold on my handhelld Gameboy Color. < 3 Thank you so much!
Ever since watching your videos I've been completing living dexes in all games I'm playing for retroachievements. So far I've completed Blue, Yellow, Gold, and Crystal. Currently working on the Gen 3 games. Funny enough the dogs weren't that hard for me, I used a gengar with both mean look and hypnosis, and it only took an hour or two per game. There's a very specific method in the transition room between route 29 and 45 that helps you get a huge chance of them spawning near you.
Thank you very much for the response and your many insightful comments. Here is the answer to the most common remarks you had:
→ "When did you get Celebi/Mew?" - In part 2 of the series ( ua-cam.com/video/57F9W3db3HM/v-deo.html ) where I play Gold, Red and Crystal.
Now you have to get all shinies in Gen 2.... good luck!
Just about finished my living pokedex on yellow(120 out of 151, all on original game cartridges) and going to be starting gold, silver, and crystal probably in about a week. started doing this mid july. As im typing this, i just finished the whole pokedex on blue and i finished red 3 weeks ago.
That does answer my main question, indeed. Catching the roamers is a frustrating endeavor xD

I did that challenge too, living dex in gen 2. The true inducing pain was when I realized how full my boxes would be with the living dex. It was a nightmare to order the boxes in numerical order. Gen 3 boxes system is a blessing.
I'm proud of you man, now you can join competitive Pokemon and become a Pokemon master.
All you need is a hat.
You should’ve printed the certificate on a gameboy printer that’s how you actually complete the Pokédex
This series went from a "This seems like a neat challenge" to "Oh my god this is a nightmare."
It's been quite the journey to watch this from start to finish.
I found your channel thanks to a recommendation about the gen 2 catching mechanics video, but been enjoying the content you make quite a lot.
I am happy you stuck with me through the entire challenge :')
It may seem like I complain a lot, but in the end, the Living Pokédex really is a fun challenge.
As someone who has done a complete gen 3 dex… don’t do it…but I’m sure you will/have because content. Have fun on Mt. Battle!
@@Lyra I can personally attest to the frustration of getting those stupid dogs. I just did Gold on a separate file and traded over Master Balls.
Catching the 3 legendary dogs was the most painful experience as a child 😂 It sucked when you used mean look and then they could roar afterwards
Taunt + mean look, it's a good option or use pokemon with soundproof ability/mean look.

@@lightyagami3492that was in Gen 3 if I remember correctly. I remember them disappearing from my game as a kid and getting pissed.
I actually loved to catch the roaming legendaries back in gen 2, it's so satisfying when it finally happens

You rebellious little critters don't know your struggles only make me more excited!
Everyone is equal here regular lowly pokeballs for all. Know your place! Oh you say your a god?! NOT TO ME!
Nice job! I also completed gen 2 and have a few notes on the legendary beasts.
1. Mahogany town is a good location to find them but route 38 from ecruteak city is slightly more efficient
2. Super repels are more efficient then max repels. Maxes last to long
3. Manually checking the beasts locations is only more efficient with specific routing. It's better to just keep soft resetting after your super repel runs out.
4. There's a song on the radio that slightly ups your efficiency
5. Jynx is better to use as it learns lovely kiss, I'm pretty sure it can be caught at level 40 and I believe it also knows mean look
And, if you value your time, DO NOT USE EMERALD. when I did a gen 3 national dex I did
sapphire regional dex--->leafgreen regional dex----> johto cleanup in emerald---> ho'oh and lugia in the gamecube games.
Johto cleanup can be done in the gamecube games in much less time but I wanted to only use the spinoffs as little as possible so I did that in emerald which easily added 20ish hours to my run since it requires 3 completions of the emerald regional dex
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 7, 10
Why are there two 7 bullet points and no 9 before 10? 😅
I just used emerald once and got the missing Jotho starters from colosseum
So the extra step of the gate is a time saver?
Same but I used dugtrio or wobbufet everytime
also roar doesn’t affect haunted right?
This is the correct way to do it and also works in any other area with two routes connected to each other (37&36, 30&31)
@@sweatyburger it does.. but using haunter will save you a turn coz you don't need to switch.. not sire if you can eve train on silver to make parasect speed way much higher so you have a 100% rate on putting them to sleep with spore..

For those asking about Celebi, I thought I'd add that it's possible Lyra either used the Celebi egg glitch or the coincase glitch method. It would be awesome to see videos of him doing one and the Gen 1 Mew glitch.
He could have been playing on 3DS Virtual Console. Pokémon Crystal on 3DS gives you the Celebi event for free.

@@princesspikachu3915 Oh, now I see where that event footage was coming from whenever I saw that scene with Kurt on UA-cam! Thanks for explaining!
Seems like he should played the Crystal version from the 3DS VC since that actually officially added in the Celebi event despite that event not originally leaving Japan. That way the only glitch needed to win should be for getting Mew in gen 1 and then trading it to gen 2.
I did this in Gen 3. It took a couple months of grinding but it was so dope watching my last pokemon evolve. Crobat, i'll never forget it .

Gengar couldnt learn false swipe and hypnosis have a horrandious accuracy
@@hellzfallen1993downright Horrendous good sir
It’s just magic.

here’s something important I feel you should know, which you may not already because of your surprise at Entei and Raikou having Roar:
In FireRed and LeafGreen, if Entei or Raikou uses Roar, they stop existing due to a glitch. In order to catch them after this, you need to reset the game back to before you triggered their roaming and retrigger it.
Just master ball them.

I got spoiled with the comments but even with that, the ending got me excited! good editing skills as always, looking forward to the future series!
Hey, I wanted to give some advice for people that want to complete the living dex (or just catching the beasts in general) that I found while catching the roaming beasts earlier this year:
First of all, I recommend using your master ball on Raikou.

Thank you very much :')
Also...

You didn't know the duping glitch then. You could easily dupe items back then.
@@Katharina-rp7iq How is that relevant?
@@undyingUmbrage413because you could duplicate the master ball
Dude this 1 HP capture at the end was literally an anime final episode, fantastic!
this is a really good series, i think your approach in telling the story of "i beat this videogame but there is a bullshit twist" is very unique - I really like that you bring mostly unknown game data and sometimes needs to do some micromanagement with it.
Keep it up 👍
Damn gen 3 is gonna be a long ride man like you gotta do alot in those games
Slowpoke being only found in leafgreen is pretty frustrating
@@milkmolotov4167 Is it even doable without playing every single Gen 3 games?
@@shytendeakatamanoir9740 You can afford to not play every single one, but like Slowpoke there are a few stragglers that are annoying.
Good times.
Incredible run.
I've watched all of your Pokémon videos, and loved all of them. Hyped for Gen 3 Living Dex!
You definitely made this way harder than it needed to be by not just weakening the beasts more.
another good video Lyra! congrats on the second living dex!
The vicarious feeling of accomplishment I feel from you completing this is well worth it! Thanks for the stellar content!
Another strategy I've used: Scyther with "False Swipe," move also helped me to catch them. I put them to Sleep, Mean Look them, False Swipe them, then Ultra Ball them. Good video man! Your hard work paid off!
Jynx is the ideal Pokemon to catch roaming Legendary Pokemon due to her Mean Look + Lovely Kiss combo. (Or the other way around)
Or mean look + baton pass to pass mean look to sir ender
Honestly once I learned the Mahogany method hunting the roamers became a joy. It's completely understandable that people find it tedious but I guess I got nostalgia goggles because I think it is such a thrill. It's one of those rare times in pokemon where I feel like I'm actually being challenged, and it's so much more fulfilling than catching legendaries that the game leads you to through its story.
I might be misremembering, but if you played through Gold multiple times, why not transfer over the Master Balls you receive?
Most of the playthroughs were only far enough to unlock trading and trade the starter, no real reason to continue all the way to the master ball
Edit: whoops, didn't notice that within the video he's using Gold again, my bad.
My thoughts exactly lol
I've tried catching the roamer's, I'd be collecting master balls. It would even give you time to do your breeding
This is how I have always done it.
Living all of our childhood dreams for us.
This video series shows me just how much better the PC UI is starting Gen 3. I cannot imagine trying to sort through a Gen 1 or 2 PC...
(Also, nice inclusion of Ghost Trick music!)
Unironically one of the best features in Stadium 2 is the ability to sort your boxes xD lol
@@altejoh I literally just use St.2 for all my box management
I mean I look at it like, if I'm scared to run because of some pokemon giving me a mean look, I wouldn't be scared anymore if it was put away into a ball
The roaming beasts segments took me back to my own frustrations back in 2002 when I was playing these games. The only difference is that there was no better way. It was deal with it or don't. :P
I tried using mean look when I was 7 or 8, and I learned that they know roar.
As a kid I just used the cloning trick with the PC a lot to duplicate master balls. Yes I was a cheater
Oh ok it’s gen 3 thought it was gen 2 so when I saw roar and him saving I was like oh no
19:32 going to a town for this is not a good plan.
As someone who has legitimately completed a Gen 3 living dex I'm excited to see this.
Congratz on the Gen 2 living dex! Can't wait to see all the Gen 3 videos soon. 🙂
When I was a kid I remember being so frustrated with the roaming legendaries running I trained a Haunter to a high level and used mean look, only for it to first turn Roar. I was so mad lol, so i understand your frustration here
You've inspired me to complete my gen 2 living dex (I'm at 219!) and I've been hoping gen 3 would be coming afterwards.
I completed the 251 pokedex on original hardware back in the day. Had to send in the game to the Nintendo club to get Celeby. I cannot explain how sad I felt when I discovered that the game used a battery for saving the game. 400+ hours in game gone.
the more this series goes on the more pain it becomes
gen3 will be pain on a whole new level lol
Amazing video! What a satisfying final battle. Extra love that Vaporeon is your mascot
The worst shit is that straight after encountering a legendary your battery light starts flashin
Absolutely panicking
Congrats on completing gen 2, and good luck in gen 3. Hope you got a GameCube and Pokemon Coliseum and XD Gale of Darkness ready
Pokemon box and channel (jirachi?) too haha
@@VividFlash and Japanese bonus disk Celebi.
Although it's definitely being covered in a video if it hasn't already. I'm hyped for their next part
I love breeding in the newer games (specifically USUM and SwSh) but I had no idea what a pain breeding was in the older games! Yikes, you brave soul xD
Did you consider using the save game item duplication to multiply master balls? At least as a last resort? Or did you just keep the 1 you got?
"Oh, it's faster" I think I found that moment too funny
I felt that Wookiee roar in my soul lol
hearing your anguish to the beast hunt made me laugh, it was like 2001 all over again for me I know this pain quite well.
I haven't finished the video yet, are you gonna do Gen III? I've done that, and it's genuinely pretty fun with all the different games and routing options
May be you should finish the video before commenting...
I remember using fast balls gave me the greatest chance of catching the legendary dogs/any pokemon that fled on its first turn ie Abra. I used to fly to my locations to change legendary locations aswell.
Great video, and congratulations ❤🎉
If you had beaten the elite four 44 times you'd get a Mewthree!
LOL COOL STORY BRO
You fullfilled my childhood dream as well buddy... SIlver was my favorite game of all time. thank you so much .😢
Gen 2 (Gold) was my first pokemon game.
Still good job man!
you don't get to be champion of the league without learning how to spam full restores
So you will definetly grow even more!
smt devil survivor ost HITS HARD

The legendaries in this game are such a ridiculous ordeal that they alone are enough to deter me from attempting this. I simply lack the patience. Congrats for pulling it off!
This is hands down one of the best videos I have ever watched lately pertaining to old classical pokemon games andd definitely has brought back "lovely" memories of my struggles when I first played Pokemon Gold on my handhelld Gameboy Color. < 3 Thank you so much!
The level of excitement when you caught Suicune? Priceless.
