Rules and Explanations
Rules: (1) Only use the one Pokémon in Battle, others for HMs are fine. (2) No Items in battle (3) No Glitches* (4) Set Mode (5) No saving in the Elite Four (6) No evasion moves
Badge Boost "Glitch" Explanation: When you collect odd numbered badges the game boosts a stat by 12.5%. Brock gives ATK, Surge DEF, Koga SPE, and Blaine SPC (in game text is wrong). When any of your stats are modified (even by you using a move like Withdraw, or your opponent using Leer) the badge boosts are re-applied. So If you use Swords Dance, you also gain *an additional 12.5% in Speed/Defence/Special (on top of the 12.5% you were supposed to be getting). When you level up, the game corrects this error, and only the non-glitch 12.5% remains. Because of how difficult it is to avoid, I've allowed for it to be exploited, since opponents will spam Leer/Growl anyways, and this way battles are less random. Red/Blue are extremely buggy, so there's always going to be some glitches present, and because of how unavoidable this one is, it is allowed in runs, and considered more like a special Generation 1 mechanic as opposed to a glitch.

The best one was the level five elite four.
Love these videos, but I always find myself rewatching sections where I have quickly done a task whilst watching only to realise its gone from Jrose fighting Misty to suddenly fighting Bruno.
Jrose 11 is one of those really nice "routine" youtube channels imo
The vids are a bit repetitive by virtue of around 90% of them being about Gen 1 Solo Runs, you watch enough of them you get a general feel for which bits are going to be mentioned outside of those moments where some random fourth-grader on route 15 ends up being the god of all pokemon for some reason
You go in knowing the Elite 4 is gonna be half the runtime, there are some recurring jokes you can safely assume will show up, this isn't the kind of content you go to if you're trying to shake things up
But like... that's why I keep watching, sometimes I just feel like listening to Jrose talk for a few hours and he makes the videos fun to listen to
The runs themselves are interesting, yeah, and there are plenty of moments that catch my attention, but like... it's kind of just nice that this exists
Top tier comfy content imo
Agreed he's one of my favorite youtubers
The reason that Sabrina's Alakazam is locked into Recover against other Psychic types but the rival's isn't is because Sabrina's Alakazam knows Psywave. It's common knowledge that the programmers mistakenly made the AI always use super effective moves even if they don't do damage, but when it comes to not very effective moves, the programmers actually got it right: the AI will only avoid not very effective moves if the Pokemon knows an "acceptable" alternative move. Attacks that don't deal damage are usually not considered acceptable, and so the rival's Alakazam, which knows three Psychic moves and Recover, can use any move. Because Psywave ignores type effectiveness, however, it is always considered an acceptable alternative move. Therefore, because Sabrina's Alakazam knows an acceptable alternative move, it will avoid using not very effective moves. But Psywave itself is a Psychic move, and so the AI sees it as not very effective and will avoid using it. Thus, Sabrina's AI is locked into Recover.
The fact that the "good AI" is in fact, some of the dumbest AI in practice ever is exhilarating to me.

That’s a HILARIOUS catch-22-style screwup. So specific, and yet so interesting! Thank you for your explanation. I love Gen 1 AI.

Sabrina's Alakazam spammed recover because it has "good" ai, and its other three moves are psychic and thus not very effective. Or at least, I think that's the case.
Rival has good AI too but uses psychic moves nonetheless, despite being able to spam Recover.
The Rival's Zam has the same setup of 3 psychic moves + recover but doesn't spam it, which is why he singled Sabrina's out. The good ai move effectiveness logic probably only spams non damage moves on super effective types (like Lance's dragons against fighting/poisons). If I had to guess why only her Zam spams recover it would be partly from move ineffectiveness, but also due to it being her last Mon using some survivalist strat (even to no end) since the rival never uses Zam last.
Sabrina's good AI is part of the reason, but it is not all. Good AI only discourages not very effective moves if the Mon also knows an offensive move which is either normally effective or uses an unusual damage calculation. Only Sabrina's Alakazam (not the Rivals) knows Psywave and since it is a move with an unusual damage calculation Psywave can discourage the use of itself (and Psychic/Barrier), leaving Sabrina's Alakazam in the unique position to discourage all her offensive moves against a Psychic type.
Jrose Explaining Barrier vs. Meditate: So basically, Meditate is better because it's worse.
He probably should have ran Psychic, Body Slam, Meditate and Barrier. Anything that resisted Psychic would be no issue for boosted Body Slams that Barrier helps set up easier. Oh well.
Sees "1 hour of silence but yoshi occassionally licks you" in Jrose's suggested videos 🤔
"Never in my life have I needed something so much, and never known until I received it. " - Vegeta (TFS dbz abridged)
Jrose talking about going to Erika ASAP recently makes me remember the early days when he would frequently forget to go to Erika until near the end
Been there, done that.
Same 😂
Man, the moment you took Meditate over Barrier, I knew you were making a mistake. I'm glad you recognized it though.
As you've said yourself, Barrier would have helped a lot against Lance, but I think it would have actually helped in other tough fights. Most important is the Champion as the biggest obstacle turned to be Exeguttor, but only because his physical attacks did okay damage while it survived a long time (and the leer). While with Barrier, it would have been easy to set up against Pidgeot or even Rhydon, and then the only obstacle would have just taken long to KO, but would not be a threat
Another battle where it would have helped is surprisingly Misty, because you could have set up against Staryu and then have the attack badge boost from Brock significantly power up Mega punch. The battle would still have not been free, but reasonnably easy even without Light screen
I'm wondering if mimicing barrier on alakazam would have been better. You wouldn't have staying power but the damage from exeggcutor would have been reduced.
Recover makes you nigh invincible.
I think body slam with mediate is the better option. After two boosts it’s Mime’s best attacking move on anything that isn’t weak to Psychic or Thunderbolt.

When he went with meditate instead of barrier for the extra opportunities to badge boost I remember thinking "I feel like that's gonna come back to bite you"
yeah, being able to badge boost 3 times instead of 6 is still better if you also get max Defense...
@@DJFracus My thoughts exactly. It pairs so nicely with light screen to help counter Mr. Mime's low base stat in HP.
@@DJFracusI also feel like there weren’t a lot of Pokémon he was able to setup 6 badgeboosts against in this run.
I really liked how mr Mime went: "it's miming time" and mimed all over the rest of the game.
Seems unintuitively that mr. Mime should have been using body slam with meditate
@jdsnerdverse
Or he genuinely didn't think of it? He has several of these going at once and goes back to them in sessions...it's natural he may miss something that seems obvious with the edited down video and voice over.
Also he regularly gets hundreds of thousands of views?? And I've rarely seen comments about an "obvious proper strategy" unless it was also very obviously boring. Not sure where you got the impression JRose intentionally hampers his playthroughs, unless he's doing it to make it more entertaining (which he'll acknowledge...)

A fully evolved Pokémon having 40 for HP is nuts.

Maybe. Except Dragonrage Nightshade, Seismic Toss, and Sonic Boom there weren’t any moves that ignored the barrier moves in Gen 1, right?

Something I like about these videos is when you acknowledge making big mistakes with certain Pokémon. It’s just nice to see. That said, I think you did a pretty good job with Mr. Mime and feel like you overall did the run justice.
On the gen 1 vs gen 3 comment, I totally agree. To me the fun of the solo runs is seeing how you solve the "puzzle" of how to beat the game. Anyone else who wants to try could probably find a few more efficiencies here or there but generally there is a solution to the puzzle that anyone could play along and duplicate. Once you get to gen 3, it is no longer "how to beat the game with *A* [insert Pokemon]" it's "how to beat that game with *this* [insert Pokemon]." While I think for the player that would add variety and challenge as a viewer it makes the solution to the puzzle less interesting because I would probably never face that exact puzzle without a bunch of resets.
That especially becomes the case when Hidden Power is a useful type for one of his runs
I can't believe how hard this soundtrack slaps
I’ve been struggling with severe anxiety lately and I discovered you these past few months. I’ve done nothing but binge every chance I get. @@SimplyAJ thank you, i appreciate that
I hope that we got these updated themes to the overall soundtrack because DAMN they sound really good. Excellent vid as always dude.
"Its Mime Time" is a phrase thats shown up in my nightmares before.
Damn
Why does it feel like whenever I need a Jrose video, it just manifests itself? My man's been on fire lately
I remember in previous video where Jrose said it wasn't a speedrun because there is no rounting planned and decision are made on the fly.
But well, while there is definitively a layer of improvisation, by this point it's safe to say there are general routings, having a (sometime wrong) intuition of what battle order and ressource gathering he should go for depending on the pokemon and feedback. (not meaning sometime Jrose don't made mistakes )
In a way....isn't kinda like a roguelike speedrun (beside set seeds) ? in a roguelike you can never be sure of how the run would go and thus movements are rarely ever done the most optimal way possible, but with experience you surely know what are some of the msot efficient choices and wich decision you should take.... here's it's the ""main weapon"" that got "randomized".
I was surprised when he lost barrier, I thought maybe he'd learn reflect later or that meditate raised something other than attack
The zoom-out to UA-cam interface really threw me for a loop, because I downloaded the video and was watching it locally in VLC media player
Absolute top tier editing by AJ
Aha, thanks!
Glad Ash’s mom let him out of the house…
Yep
Exeggutor was a really good check for both Psychic and Thunderbolt.
Always a good day when you get a Jrose video. Mr. Mine did really good. It has a pretty unique movepool for a Gen 1 Psychic type that makes it different from the others. Seismic Toss (if you fight the trainers in a certain order, they move out of the way to let you get it without using Cut) would've made Misty a bit easier I think, as it'd be a clean 3HKO on Starmie, but otherwise not many improvements to make. Awesome run.
Damn, AJ with the meta commentary

I think relying meditate was a massive problem.
Lol I can't believe people actually got offended, the few comments I'd seen at the time I watched the video were laughing.
Barrier > Meditate. Even 'only' with 3 badge glitch boosts compared to 6, it was evident early on that Barrier would've come in more useful on far more occasions than Meditate. Mr. Mime has pretty good special so it was only ever going to be defence as his weakness and so it makes perfect sense to keep Barrier, especially for a speed run where in some instances you might have only needed to use Barrier once
Hey Jrose, I remember you were going through some stuff a while ago (must have been over a year now). I know the regular content is back and that probably bodes well but I hope you are doing good fella.

There are 3 easily accessible pp ups besides the power plant one. The rocket corner one, the one outside in celadon city, and then one on the east path of the cycle road. I know you go down the left side, but if you go down the right you can stop against the NPC standing by the grass patch in the north, go back up one square and then right and in the patch of grass is a rare candy. Follow the east wall down the road until you see the NPC who stands facing away from you in the middle of the path and going south from his position in the road you’ll come across another pp up. There’s a max elixir at the bottom to the left of the southernmost NPC as well. None of this requires any extra battles, I do these runs too and always pick these items up
considering tha the S.S. Anne leaves and its a direct upgrade to MegaPunch i would never skip BodySlam if the runner can learn it :(
Ya, especially as Body Slam is arguably the best attacking move in Gen I. Like in competitive Gen I people run mons specifically to switch into body slam. It’s one of the reasons Gengar and Snorlax are so good (Gengar being immune and Snorlax not being abled to be paralyzed by it).
So excited, let's see how Ash's step dad is gonna fare!!
Lmao.
remember: It eats on the floor!
I have a great idea for a challenge run! Same rules as the minimum battle run; however, as soon as you get experience share, you must equip it to a pokemon and never use that pokemon. This effectively reduces the amount of exp you get by half and lowers your team to 5. I wonder if such a run is possible? Cheers and love your channel.

The music during the Sabrina fight was pretty cool
Every time I see the next JRose run in my notifications I put it in my downloads to put on as soon as I can. Excited to see how Mr. Mime takes on Red/Blue after seeing Scott's video for Yellow
Absolutely
I respect your dedication so much. I'm doing a run with only 4 pokemon (Pikachu, Squirtle, Charmander & Bulbasaur so i guess a quad run?) and I'm barely able to manage it. You're truly insane for doing a solo run with every single pokemon.
Yeah Barrier would have been way more useful than meditate
If Mr Mime gets Body Slam, Meditate Body Slam makes Sabrina and the rival Exeggutor and Alakazam much easier to beat.
If only had hadn't passed up the Body Slam TM. The run could have been a lot smoother.
17:04 WHAT DID HE JUST SAY???
Dang, I kind of wanted to see the Mr Mime with Barrier run. Meditate has 1 benefit but it wasnt useful enough to be able to buff 6x
On a recent playthrough of Red version i got a mr mime and taught it psychic and annihilated the whole game. Wasn't a solo run, but somehow i just never tried mr mime instead of kadabra or not running a psychic. Its like a mewtwo you can get from a trade after the 2nd gym. Its insane.
Everytime Jrose miss-clicks a move and loses the battle because of it, I just think of the movie Down Perescope and the quote "When you rush, that's when accidents happen."
I'm genuinely looking forward to Sandshrew... mainly because I think it'll be full of your suffering.😂
It's Special and Speed are abysmal backed by a middling HP stat. It dies if a water or grass pokemon even sneezes in it's general direction. Or any strong Special attack really.
Edit: I forgot Cubone basically suffers the same way, just with 40 Special and 35 Speed. Mmmmm.
Some thoughts:
1 - I come across a new Jrose video, I click.
2 - Mr Mime’s back sprite is one of the best back sprites in Gen1.
3 - Jrose is so eloquent and well-spoken.
A rare run where all gym leaders and major battles are battled in order!
It's funny how Psychic Pokemon would have such a clean streak in this challenge if it wasn't for Abra.

I wanna see the Raichu speed run soon since you did the other Kanto starter's final evolutions. Brock seems like a nightmare though. Raichu only knows 3 moves and only one does damage. That move is thundershock which his guys are all immune to. Meaning, you have to use the struggle strategy. Seems like Pikachu would actually be better for the first section of the game due to all the ground and grass types you face before access to TMs. Pikachu at least knows normal type moves.
I audibly gasped when you said Laura-lie instead of the CORRECT Laura-lee 😂
