Just realized how trash schools are with figuring out whether a child has ADHD (inattentive type). I was once separated from my classroom for a week because I wouldn't complete my work, never socialized with anyone, and yet I wasn't disruptive. They took me to this room and entertained me with a ton of puzzled... because I was able to complete these puzzles with ease they saw no issues with me... Homework and Classwork vs. Fun "hyperfocus inducing" puzzles... yeah...

My school didn’t do that. In fact they made me go to a study hall class to complete homework. In fact all I got was accommodations where I could be in a normal classroom. One of my accommodations was to sit in the front of the class and I needed it more even as I got into high school and it turned out I need glasses.

I 99.9% sure I’m dyslexic but they thought is was my vision I got glasses and I don’t think I needed them but now I have to wear them and It was not easy to get me to wear glasses when I was younger, I didn’t like things on my face and I hated jeans bc they were “too tight” and I don’t like socks that you have to pull up I wear the ones that are more discreet and don’t roll down. And I think they missed my adhd signs bc they were more worried about my dad and his treatment of us (he wasn’t very good) and now I’m not hyper fixated on school anymore and not as eager to please so I’m struggling and I told my family and they agree but it’s not important to them to get a diagnosis.

My mom asked my teachers every year of I could possibly have adhd cuz I had to be reminded of my schoolwork all the time, I kept getting distracted with paper and things on my desk, and more.
The teachers said they weren't worried about it because ig I didn't show the hyperactive part of having adhd.
I'm finally getting checked out for it.
Have something next week to find out if I have it or just have an unusual learning style. Kinda weird since it doesn't just affect me in school but I'm not complaining.

In 6th grade, I was placed in a "gifted" class for a while. Throughout elementary school, I always performed very well, read at a very high level, because I was always reading things that I was interested in outside of school and I also played a lot of role-playing type video games or otherwise more involved games that required a lot of reading, and I usually just outpaced my classmates. For the gifted class, they would round us up from different classes during second period and we'd go hang out in a room and be tasked to do things like building suspension bridges in a simulation or building cohesive, made up fantasy worlds.
I got kicked out of it a few months into the school year because I didn't keep my grades up. I just never did homework. I would sleep through most classes. I would either rush through work and go to sleep or wake up toward the end of a class and do it quickly. My in class work was always excellent. I was praised for my writing and math skills in particular. Hardly ever anything below an A+ when I did the work in class. I just didn't do homework and I was failing most classes.
When I would get home from school, I would go to sleep for a few hours, and then after waking up I would immediately jump into my newest interest at the time, programming. I was learning c++ at 11 years old because I wanted to make games like the ones I played. My issues with sleep were becoming very apparent, or rather should have been apparent, to the adults around me. I just was not feeling tired at night anymore. I would be awake until 3 or 4 am, trying to sleep, before getting up for school at 6:30, then feeling the crash around 8 or 9, struggling to stay awake all day at school, and then going to sleep for a while when I got home. 20 years later and I haven't been able to fix this. My brain wants to sleep from 8 or 9 am until 3 or 4 pm. The only way I keep a normal schedule is by staying tired consistently. 4 or 5 hours of sleep a night, and I'll usually be able to fall asleep around midnight the next night, then up at 5 the next morning. If I sleep in, there's a great chance I won't sleep the next night.
So, there's the story of my early life, which informs my real point here: that it should have been obvious to the adults in my life that something was different, and the normal structure of school and home life wasn't meshing well with my brain. I was obviously very capable, but I just didn't perform the way I was supposed to. Throw me in a room with the other "gifted" kids, and I'd stay engaged with designing that bridge or creating my fantasy environments down to the internal organs of the creatures I dreamt up, but I wasn't mentally present in any other class. I'd bust out a perfect score on ant test, but couldn't be bothered to do homework or remember to bring my backpack to school. I'd stay focused on churning out code, but wouldn't be able to tell you what you just told me 4 seconds ago.
Granted, my parents did make an attempt to figure out what was going on, even took me to some sessions with counselors and therapists, but it was decided that I had emotional trauma from my biological dad (who displayed the same behaviors as I did regarding school and fixating on personal interests, and as I only learned earlier this year, was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult). I was told that I didn't do some things well or attempt things because I didn't think I was good enough or deserved to do well. I never accepted or believed that. Anyone who knows me knows that I can tend to get up my own ass and egotistical about how well I can perform in many areas and that I crave challenge and difficulty. One therapist had me promise my mom that I would stop sleeping when I came home instead of ever trying to address the problem itself. I was told that I was wasting my potential and that I needed to do better in school, and more or less they tried harder to force me into the structure and routine that didn't work for me, and tried equipping me with skills and habits that work for other people.
Also, this was 2001-2002, when ADHD was a fad disorder, getting lots of attention. I think that hurt my chances of having it recognized because so many people either believed it was an excuse or otherwise thought too many kids were being misdiagnosed (I mean, they were and still are).
So, knowing what we know now, it should have been obvious. But, back then, I was "too smart" to have ADHD. I was just lazy, or I wasn't being challenged enough. I'm not saying I was failed. I just hope we continue to do better with recognizing ADHD and other things in children and treat them accordingly.

its important to note that to people with ADHD that have never considered the fact they might have ADHD, they have no idea their attention span & the constant blur of 100 channels of thought aren't normal. i thought i was dumb for YEARS, up until late highschool age when it was too late to take back a decade and a half of shame, guilt, ostracism, self hatred and confusion as to why i was failing so spectacularly at the same challenges i thought everyone was facing.
the first time i took 10 mg of ritalin i was suddenly aware that i had dozens and dozens of constant blurry thoughts all the time, and i only realized this wasnt normal when they all melded into one steady stream of conciousness. like a broken dam vs a running faucet of focus. one hundred quiet, static filled distant tv channels vs a single clear channel of which you have suddenly been given the remote. suddenly i could CHOOSE to listen, to tune into different things, i was so shocked that i could actually hold onto the sentences my math teacher was saying and realized that i had literally never had complete control of my attention, it had control over me. i almost cried with joy at the realization that all this time, when i had already learned it was easier to bully myself before everyone else did it so at least i made people laugh with my 'stupidity' (dyscalculia, distractibility), i wasn't stupid at all. the entire system just failed to meet my needs and with RSD i was severely emotionally damaged by not only neglect at home that no one recognized but by every negative comment i had ever recieved. hearing 'i wish you would just apply yourself' or 'i know you can do better' when you are working so goddamn hard to even function at the bare minimum level is soul crushing because that IS your best, unmedicated and untreated, and all people want from you is productivity no matter how much it costs you.
its very very typical for it to present as depression and anxiety because those can be BYPRODUCTS of the disorder, often because these children have been shamed, criticized, bullied and chided by parents and peers alike for things they have NEVER been able to control. when you have no idea that everyone else can do things they don't want to do, and you don't know how to express 'i just can't make myself do this, i keep trying' so it is always responded to as if the child is being lazy, all you can see from a clinical standpoint is the byproduct of that adhd and maybe squirming and forgetfulness, easily attributed to the anxiety that they likely ALSO have. because of awful comments. i quit beloved hobbies because i was chided repeatedly for being unable to practice, stopped applying myself academically because eventually i just didn't care. the entire world thought i was stupid anyway so it didn't matter.
then i got diagnosed. i didn't know my memory was exceptionally bad, or that i had focus problems at all... but i WAS losing hours of my day to seemingly nothing, and that's when my doctor noticed a discrepancy in my symptoms. sometimes you can't hone in on concerns about focus because the person with adhd has ZERO comparison (unless they find a medication that works and have somehow already taken the medication) into how everybody else's brain works. instead of targeting the individual, i wish it was more often taken from a different perspective.
'would people say you're forgetful?' vs 'are you forgetful?' people with adhd have had their symptoms minimized and looked down on their entire life with no comparison as to what is the 'ideal' level of function, so of course they might not think they're forgetful. but other people might SAY they are.
i hope that maybe the critisism adhd people face can be used to help scope out the disorder in those that have it, it is a genuine condition and should not be slapped onto whatever child is causing problems. ADHD is a serious difference in not only cognitive function but also the levels of certain chemicals in the brain, stuffing a neurotypical or even just non-ADHD kid with stimulants is doing far more harm than good when maybe they need their home life looked into instead.
for anyone suspecting they have adhd, try to record yourself. watch how you talk, see how often you jump from topic to topic or wiggle and fidget, maybe just space out, recording yourself going about your day gives you insight into not only how everyone else sees you but also how you behave. i recently recorded myself & i cannot BELIEVE i went under the radar. without medication i can barely hold a coherent conversation

In nature, people that can't function are sent into exile for a reason. They drag the tribe down. They shouldn't breed.

    • @someguy34231
      @someguy34231 Рік тому +10

@sarahrobertson634 Actually, there's an entire theory on how 'ADHD' as it has come to be known as a deficit in our society as we've made it, was once an advantage during times where it was absolutely imperative that some groups of humans in a tribe had lower sleep needs and a different circadian rythm, high pattern recognition, low tolerance for inane tasks but also be able to enter hyperfocus, etc. Neurotype diversity would have likely been an advantage then, as you have different people with different skillsets alert at different times and able to excel at certain tasks. ADHD is largely hereditary, people with ADHD survived long enough to breed all the way down to us. The functionality in a society we as humans quite literally made up isn't as much a point toward eugenics, but toward shifting the attitude of said created society. I can't do some things a neurotypical could do too well, but I can also sustain focus for 12 hours without even needing to eat, drink or rest to complete either a very very large task or several dozen smaller tasks with no planning or forethought, in a manner that most neurotypicals would need stimulants to achieve. I've always done several weeks full of work in a few days and gotten above average results, and I can thank hyperfocus for that. The deficits come from an academic and social system built only to support a single static way of learning.
In nature, we would probably excel. But our societies at this point are meant to work you until you break, and that can be awful when focus on unwanted topics comes at a price. If I could have persued the topics I fixate on, I would've flew through it with flying colors. ADHD doesn't hinder intelligence, and in some aspects it has huge positives, the deficits only come in when you take into account the structure we based our societies upon. I'm an extreme example, and I've gotten a lot better since the four months. But ADHD is actually of the 'disorders' (nowadays yes, past times they may have been advantages) that can have equally strong positives as the negatives if you hone it. Fun fact, Leonardo da Vinci is thought to have had ADHD as well, and we wouldn't have Microsoft without it either as Bill Gates has also been suspected to have ADHD. Ted Nelson had ADHD, and he influenced essentially the entirety of internet as we know it today, as well as Michael Phelps, Simone Biles, so on. ADHD is very much an impacting but not exclusively negative neurotype, and my comment poorly expained that ADHD isn't solely negative.

Exactly! UA-cam experts on Bipolar and Depression act like they know better when THEIR PATIENTS probably have undiagnosed ADHD and they just refuse to see it.
As a Psych student working toward a PhD (specifically focused on ADHD, as it turns out) this ubiquity of what I can only classify as misinformation is just downright infurating.
I have watched 3 different PhDs in Psych on UA-cam Dunning-Krueger their way through a 10 minute video on "how ADHD is actually overdiagnosed", when in reality it is becoming harder and harder to deny that we just misunderstood ADHD. It doesn't go away, and it doesn't always manifest itself exclusively in people who society has deemed to be "struggling". People who mask well get left out of the conversation entirely; women go underdiagnosed, adults go underdiagnosed.
How many people have you met who were like "I had ADHD as a kid but I grew out of it"; And now they can pay attention in a conversation/class, but they forget to pay bills, forget to do laundry, forget things when getting groceries, struggle to do chores, forget where their phone/wallet/key are, and live an a pigsty because they *can't* force themself to clean?
Oh sure, you grew out of it all right.
And these "experts" never even mention what ADHD does to your executive function. FOR SHAME!

Of course I'm sure those have been there but ADHD explains so much and why certain things I intuitively did to keep life good/balanced helped me so much. I was put in ballet, musical lessons. I was very productive with certain kinds of music. While it's not the sum of me it's always at the back of mind and i can take care of myself better.I also now understand the ways in which I am socially ostracized as due to the profound difference in how I think etc. ADHD in my experience is noticable and makes you very different to others or unique without them quite understanding how or why. For instance my intellectual energy and even physical is I think so unusual for my age it's made even me question myself. I also now know that when my life isn't balanced I can have medication.

As someone who has ADHD and recovering CPTSD: anxiety and depression can result from how you are treated by your community with undiagnosed ADHD. My depression decreased by 60-70% after being diagnosed with ADHD. The deep shame about my blunders that caused the depression was gone.
ADHD has such a bouquet of issues, not just restlessness and inattention. You may also have sensory issues like e.g. sensing every clothing tag/sock seams, eating irregularities because you forget, sudden exhaustion meltdowns as a kid, a "short fuse", strong physical reactions to joy/excitement, stimming/fidgeting like the restless leg/pressing a biro over and over, problems with organization, reacting strongly to positive stimulation like rewards/sweets.

Respectfully, I find these comments offensive. I am not suggesting every ADHD diagnosis has to be right. Even the best doctors can misdiagnose a serious illness as a common cold. But it is very dangerous to dismiss associations between untreated ADHD, anxiety and depression.
Try living a life with untreated ADHD, constantly being told since childhood you’re dumb, lazy, selfish, not trying hard enough, not good enough, why aren’t you like other kids, etc, etc, etc. Those voices become your own voice leading to anxiety and depression. I was diagnosed with ADHD at 46. I never had the support or treatment before then. Instead, I was constantly being punished for not being normal. Even though the diagnosis was the best thing I ever did, but the damage was already done. I live with an inferior complex all my life because of those voices that constantly remind me of my failure at being “normal” and anxiety grew from the fear of failure. I spiralled into depression at one stage. To this day, I still struggle to talk openly about my ADHD because of the stigma associated with it. These dismissing views only add fuel to this stigma fire.
There is so much focus on the “disorder” side of ADHD. What about the benefits like “hyper-focus”? When I turn it on, I can do some of the most amazing things.
I am in the ADHD spectrum and I am not ashamed of it. Not any more.

Can we get a video about ADHD getting mistaken for something else? I'm sure MedCircle doesn't intend any harm with this, and I'm certainly biased regarding this topic, but to me this is yet another piece of media out there in the wild that helps create even more obstacles for people meeting with much needed support, as it approaches the issue of misdiagnosis exclusively from a perspective that reinforces existing notions of ADHD being supposedly overdiagnosed, without acknowledging that, regardless of that, it is (also) *underdiagnosed* , as the slew of adults increasingly getting diagnoses clearly shows (particularly in women, which is just another example of how lopsided/prejudicial viewpoints disenfranchise people from support).

    • @amelialakeman8262
      @amelialakeman8262 3 роки тому +45

Agreed! Or doctors being biased because you're an adult with some possible ADHD like symptoms that you're concerned about, and just because you're able to sit down (full stop) and you're an adult, and a woman, and you weren't diagnosed with ADHD as a kid, they'll write you off as having anxiety and being too hard on yourself, even though you've been told that you'll lose your job if you don't start remembering things better or learning to focus better on stuff! If you have an issue with your memory and you've always had an issue with your memory then that's not anxiety or depression, but it can create a lot of anxiety over when you'll next mess up, and feelings of sadness and frustration that you can't remember stuff better! (And bad working memories and ADHD often go hand in hand so I'm learning) 😡

None of these really fit, as my social anxiety practically disappears when I know I can “meet expectations” or know how to behave in a situation, even if I just met the people involved. My self harm also disappears when I’m not “failing” at everything and instead have a bit of self worth - self aggression results from feeling like such a monumental mistake and burden to be around. Female/XX chromosomes. My depression is alleviated by any number of things, is worst in the mornings, doesn’t seem to have any rhyme or reason beyond all consuming brain fog.

Sure feels like a mental health condition to me. I do understand it is a neurological condition, but mental health is the overarching element here. It definitely affects the mental health. Has me! Badly! Wondering if that's okay to use it in this sense because of that. I keep thinking that my diagnosis of depression really is ADHD. It's depressing to not focus. So, if that is treated and the depression is lifted, would we then lump it all under ADHD and include the mental health that was affected? I say that because we (me and mental health professionals) have been treating depression over and over, but the focus should be on ADHD & I think that is the caveat here. I think if the diagnosis is ADHD and not Clinical Depression, the depression will finally lift. I know what you mean, though, I am just wondering if care is being used and that is the element that is being missed. Maybe they will respond. HOPE SO!

In my family's experience Under-diagnosing ADHD has been horrifically damaging to three generations of women. I'd like to see All possibilities embraced when looking at a person's struggles. We have each been heavily medicated for anxiety and depression, often with controlled anti-anxiety meds and old school depression meds, as well as all the SSRI. Never was ADHD a part of the duscussion even as these meds didn't help. And yes, decades of therapy, CBT, EMDR, WRAP classes, ALANON....all the skills but nothing making much difference, except to leave us feeling hopeless.
I'm not really understanding why there is such reluctance to try treating the ADHD possibility first. It's not as if the meds for depression and anxiety are harmless and some are controlled substances. Everyone I know who speaks about trying stimulant medications has had an immediate affect to work with much more quickly than the months required for anxiety and depression meds to show a result. That shorter window could save a life.

After learning more about adhd myself and currently awaiting my diagnosis for adhd I think she could have been saved, if just one of all the proffessionals that "treated" her through the years had known how common it is for adhd to be missdiagnosed as all the labels she got from them. Recently I have received an ADHD diagnosis from two independent doctors and started medication. In this month of being on medication I have seen more positive changes in myself than in years of treatment for BPD. Prior doctors were trying to convince me that my executive dysfunction was caused by depression but I've definitely had depression in the past and I could tell the difference and how I continued to struggle even when I didn't feel like I had depression. Then in turn my inability to function was GIVING me depression. So it was a bit of a chicken or egg situation.

Wow, I have been wondering if mold may have been causing my seemingly increasing deteriorating mental and physical health, but I have a history of depression and anxiety plus last yr I was in an severely abusive relationship with a narcissist. That has given me symptoms of c-ptsd. When I escaped from him I came to live where I am now. The house has mold issues. Part of the home is closed off due to it. The room I stay in is connected by a wall at the rear of the house which is halfway under ground. The yard is always wet. I was told the home building by neighbors behind us has caused drainage problems. I seem to be getting worse with my memory, emotional regulation, organization and executive functioning etc. Plus I feel lethargic and achy. Some days I stay in bed till I actually hurt so much I have to get up. Sleep is not restorative to me. I have been so down at times of harming myself but then then next minute I'm better. I noticed after a few days of rain I'm stuck in bed and what's worse is I'm next to what could be the problem! Id love to talk to you about this if you're willing. Thanks

I am a Certified Pharmacy Technician and stimulants make anxiety worse not to mention what they do to the heart. The only reason they are given to children is because they are wired differently but when I worked in pharmacy stimulants were not supposed to be treatment for adult ADHD and actually it makes more sense that the brain needs to be slowed down to be able to focus not sped up.. that’s why they tell you if you have anxiety not to drink caffeinated drinks because there is scientific data that shows stimulants make it worse. In fact they prescribe stimulants off label for depression that is not resolved by anti depressants and it works way better than anti depressants for depression as people can actually function and get out of bed because they finally have energy. I’ve been told it’s a miracle drug for depression but most Dr’s won’t prescribe it for depression. I’ve been told most anti depressants don’t work.

@@stephanieburgess8217 I have a Bachelors of Science in nursing (was an RN, let it lapse as I'm not working clinically), and have ADHD and you have your facts completely wrong:
      1) Stimulant medications CAN make anxiety worse, but that varies person to person. It's very common for adults who were undiagnosed (and therefore untreated) for ADHD to develop anxiety, depression or both, secondary to the ADHD from trying to "pass" as neurotypical when they are not. In cases like this, it's incredibly common for anxiety to go away, once treatment for ADHD starts.
      2) Evidence does not support that simulant medication, taken as prescribed, will damage the heart in any way. In fact, once I started on medication, my resting heart rate dropped like 10 bpm. My Doctor theorized it was because of the decrease in my anxiety from treating my ADHD (it's amazing how anxiety plummets when you can actually remember appointments, know where your keys are, have conversations without interrupting others constantly, and basically aren't waiting for the "other shoe to drop" about what you missed because you weren't able to pay attention.
      3) The last thing any brain with ADHD needs is to be slowed down. ADHD brains have less neurotransmitters (mostly dopamine and norepinephrine) in the parts of the brain that handle executive function. The reason that ADHD people can appear to "hyperactive" is because they're trying to stimulate their brain....it's like we're constantly trying to kickstart it, so we can get enough of the neurotransmitters we need. This is why stimulant medications actually calm many of us down. We no longer need to be physically hyperactive in order to be able to focus.
      4) Adult ADHD is absolutely a recognized condition, and the standard first line treatment is stimulant medication. There's literally thousands of studies about this.
      5) Depression on it's own (so not secondary to ADHD as I mentioned above) is a completely different situation. There many, many people who find that antidepressants absolutely do work. Because they all address depression in different neurochemical ways, often times patients and Doctors need to try a couple before finding ones that are the most effective with the least side effects.

Stimulants “slow down” people with ADHD, it effectively normalizes their thoughts, impulses, and activity because they’re effectively constantly seeking stimulus. Now if their dose is too high yes the medication itself can cause anxiety, if a normal person were to take it they to would likely experience anxiety. However if their dose is good it actually slows down the thinking/racing thoughts where anxiety can fluster if the ADHD is left untreated.

As many of the comments say, and as much of the new research shows, It's actually more common for ADHD to get misdiagnosed as Anxiety or Depression than it is for the reverse to happen.
It's like professionals trained between 1990 and 2020 went to some seminar where they said "ADHD is only 4% of the population, so make sure you only diagnose 4% as ADHD", often dismissing ADHD as a childhood illness that goes away. (All the while confusing is for ought)
I am legitimately growing weary from all the Psychiatrists that mostly deal with BPD, Bipolar, Depression and Anxiety thinking that makes them an expert on a condition they know very little about, while attributing every symptom they see to the conditions they better understand.

It wasn't till recently that I found out how dangerous depression medication can be for you. @@saharaofthedeep Health professionals have been trigger happy with anxiety/depression with me too. They blindly accepted everything I said about anxiety/depression symptoms and insistently tried to push me toward antidepressants but were overly suspicious about everything I said about ADHD symptoms. They were also overly concerned with the fear of having stimulants prescribed to me by mistake which I perceived as a red flag indicating that they would let their diagnoses or assesments of the potential disorders be influenced by the treatment that they wanted to avoid. In other words, they obviously lacked neutrality and objectivity. They've repeated countless times to me that stimulants could make my anxiety worse but not even once one of them had the honesty to mention to me that anxiety symptoms may result from ADHD and that treating ADHD with stimulants first could actually reduce anxiety. I stood my ground and lost to these people (a chain of health workers working together leading to a final assesment with a psychiatrist) and was diagnosed with anxiety and depression.
However, when my family doctor received the report I continued to object and stood my ground. It worked. I got methylphenidate instead of an antidepressant and it was worth it. While not perfect, it helps a lot with attention. I don't get agitated as they said it would do to me but instead it calms me. I get way less mind wandering and distracting thoughts, including the anxious and intrusive ones. And when my mind wanders I notice it more quickly and can bring back the focus on track more easily. In other words, it turns out that stimulants make me feel significantly less anxious. Moral of the story: always stand up for yourself. The stigma around stimulants being evil dangerous drugs is real and some healthcare workers become paranoid the minute ADHD is mentioned to them.

When you are Neurodivergent..you are always going to be Neurodivergent. Being an Autistic ADHD myself I can say with certainty that autism and ADHD are neurotypes that differ from the majority neurotype. I use the word majority lightly bc the neurotype in power (the ND community call them Neurotypicals) make the decisions for all neurotypes. A neurotypical trait is gatekeeping another is ableism. Their desperate need to have a homogeneous community has shut other neurotypes out for centuries. Disabled folks have to work hard to stay alive let alone get a diagnosis, in fact often times if you are an adult and do not have your childhood diagnosis records you will be refused evaluations, or evaluators (psychologist, neurologists) denied your evaluation results of CLEARLY Autistic or ADHD as anxiety, social anxiety or depression. Its always those 3 bc they are what Neurotypicals experience from time to time. What's not being understood is ADHD is a naturally occurring neurotype in humans. Just as Autistic is a neurotype. When you are nonverbal, ambidextrous, have "learning disabilities" Dyscalculia Dyslexia and Dysgraphia, are labled with savant, are diagnosed with clinical depression and anxiety, PTSD, diagnosed Autistic and have ADHD..its safe to say that you are Neurodivergent living a world that wasn't built for you or by you or with you. Nothing should be for one type of person in any way shape or form. If you ever see people having a discussion about a marginalized group of people, but no marginalized people are at the table..you MUST question any of "findings".

Also good to know that ADHD can be misdiagnosed as depression or anxiety too.
ADHD can make you depressed or anxious. And depression can make you inattentive.
    It goes both ways.
Sometimes only the depression needs to be addressed. Sometimes only the ADHD needs to be addressed.

That’s not true, I don’t have ADHD, I have anxiety and adhd meds (stimulants) made me feel great ! It just makes you feel really good, no depression cause it just made me feel happy and no anxiety cause the meds just made me feel good. But once I stopped taking them, the anxiety and depression came right back. A lot of people want to have adhd now cause they get perscribed adderall and it feels good.

    • @tobylinville182

@@Dee-zx9zmWhen people with ADHD take medication for ADHD it helps them focus or "calm down." When people who don't have ADHD take ADHD medication it often gives them a lot of energy, which many people think "feels good."
ADHD medications can have many other medical uses besides treating ADHD, but if a patient appears to "calm down" and is able to focus there is a good chance that patient has what we call ADHD. The amount of people who become calm after taking these drugs is irrelevant. If people are being diagnosed with ADHD that don't calm down when given the medication, they might be MISDIAGNOSED. And even then, the medication might be helping the patient in other ways, but because of stories like this, the drugs are becoming a hassle to prescribe. So, it's probably easier for a doctor to diagnose the patient with ADHD so the patient can get the helpful medication and the doctor won't loose his license. Maybe that's over diagnosis? Did I answer my own question? LOL

That could also be Auditory Processing Disorder depending on how/what you're experiencing. I have APD and in a room with lots of sounds it can be nearly impossible to differentiate what's being said and by who. I would often get overwhelmed, not because I couldn't deal with the sensory input, but because I knew that the people around me were expecting me to be able to discuss/respond to the things being said and I couldn't process out what was being said, so then I'd have anxiety. Man, I put forth so much effort listening to people and it's so irritating when someone says "God! Funny how tables turn when people get misdiagnosed with their major depression and panic disorder being in focus but infact my childhood pretty much revealed a very prominent form of ADHD. 10 years of trying to help the depression never showed any success and I always thought I'm just not trying hard enough even tho I worked so hard to fight my mental instability.
Getting medical treatment for my ADHD made my panic disorder soothen down drastically as well as my depression. Sometimes it's the other way around and I think that's very interesting while viewing the percentage of how many children and adults get misdiagnosed with ADHD but maybe have a major depression instead.

It’s not this psychiatrist’s fault- it’s a symptom of psychiatry and mental health in general being WAY too slow to diagnose & treat. This theory of misdiagnosis is antiquated and in my opinion kinda dangerous. It makes it sound like ADHD is this terrible disease and a diagnosis that should be avoided at all cost - and yes it is difficult but for me as a person with severe adhd the worst part about it is the treatment from other people. I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 40 because after being yelled at constantly I learned how to mask it. I never knew what the hell was going on, but who cares as long as “the world” isn’t annoyed right? I even found myself filtering myself with doctors in an attempt to appease them because they were so reluctant to have the ADHD talk.

It hurts... I only remember getting in trouble then all I get is an emotions that's extremely strong, not a picture just plankness in my mind and a rush of hurts, not physically, I'll start to feel weak, and I feel an emotional pain, Im not God at explaining sometimes I stuggle so hard to figure the feeling out I'll break down and repeat "I don't know" some times I'll hurt myself(hitting, pinching, and digging my nails into my self) I feel calm and it's starts again like a pulse, but when I try and describe the emotions them selfs every word or assumption Doesn't fit, every describtion I've said so far doesn't feel quite right, I'm confused and that in its self consumes me and makes me forget the real reason and sometimes my brain with non stop cycle of different things as I'm having a breakdown I keep telling my self that there not, it's not what I think, I don't know.... I don't, but this is the best way I can describe it even if it's not completely true.

This is good to know. Soon I’m going to get evaluated with ADHD but I’m pretty sure I have it. My brother has it and has been diagnosed over 10 years closer to 15 years. However, because I did well in school nobody told me nothing. When I was little my mother had to seat with me to study but I learned everything quickly, and in middle school I talk a lot in clase (more than ever), I also did my homework (due the same day) during my other classes. I didn’t need to study as much so I never had many problems except “you could be an 4.00 GPA if you study more” (instead of my 3.50) and I started to get anxiety that has worsened with time. In college, my concentration is also worst. And a few years back, I said to my mom that if colleges gave one class a month like in summer, I would have A in all my classes. When I was in my dorm, I used to clean and organize my room (I avoid it most of the time) instead of doing my work. I used to think that it was because I work better under pressure. And don’t let me start in how many things I have lost or forget for days over my whole life. To the point that it was like it never existed.
However, I’m open to other options and hopefully I get treated and get better because I’m really afraid to mess up at work (when I finish college), and something bad happens.

You can have comorbidities with all of these and ADHD. I have ADHD with SPD depression, anxiety, and PTSD. I went 35 years thinking I was a rejected foster kid with the idea that my fuck up brain was the reason no one wanted me. I went through EMDR therapy, got my trauma depression and anxiety under control, and found I was still struggling executive dysfunction. My brain on caffeine and Adderall is a bullet train on the correct rail. Off it my brain is a bowl of spaghetti noodles in a trash compactor. My thoughts are hard to grip onto and I follow the dopamine like a drug addict. However, even on meds I have SPD. Sounds are always to loud, lights are always to bright, and I have almost zero spatial reasoning. I'm covered in bruises from running into things that I didn't remember where there. ADHD is incredibly complex and needs more research beyond the behavioral issues it causes.

It's hard to say- for me a whole hour of sitting and studying sounds like a long time, unless it's a subject/a topic that you like- that's different. But you do sound very restless and/or like you have a lot of energy to burn. Have you tried taking your walks outside sometimes, going for long walks around the block instead of just walking in circles inside? Even if I still can't concentrate when I get back from walking, I will generally find that I'll feel a bit less restless (for a while), and sometimes I'll even unintentionally develop some ideas on how I'm going tackle my study when I get back. Or if that still doesn't work, if you have to remember stuff for a test and you don't like sitting down, record yourself speaking your notes/reading from you textbook on your phone, then head out with headphones/earphones on, and again just go a walk, or a run (if you like running), and listen to your recordings (I have aced tests in this way!) Or bring your notes to a park and pace around while reading them aloud.

    • @amelialakeman8262
      @amelialakeman8262 3 роки тому

I think you also have to ask yourself, say you were late all the time or late to hand assignments in. Does it bother you? Do you feel like you're trying your best and you're not succeeding, you keep trying to concentrate but the words just won't flow or you don't understand the instructions you're given much of the time and spend a long time puzzling over them, or you don't know how to structure what you write? And is this lack of progress, or not turning things in on time, affecting your relationships with people, and do you wish that they could be better? Is your lack of progress specifically, or putting your foot in your mouth, making you feel a little sad/embarrassed/ashamed sometimes? Is your difficulty concentrating on stuff making you feel worried about your future? Or do you just feel like everything's boring and that you don't care about anything? Because if it's the later, I'd be looking in to depression first before ADHD. If you're still finding joy in stuff though, but a bit worried about your concentration, I'd be looking into ADHD as well as other possible causes that might be affecting your learning, like learning disabilities, lack of interest in what you're studying (is it possible to change subjects?), insomnia, or even just being a very high energy person (with or without ADHD) and needing to exercise more or play more sport! Be more specific with people, that's my advice; like hey "I'm having a hard time doing my homework because I don't know what to write. I feel like I have writer's block or I don't understand the instructions I've been given. Could you help me?" Or "I can't seem to concentrate on my homework because I don't find it very interesting. I know that if I was more interested in this topic, that I could get a lot more work done. Do you have any ideas on how I could make it feel more interesting or more relevant to me?"

My aunt and uncle were on antidepressants and therapy for 30 years and still committed suicide... I read in the NICE guidelines to treat for ADHD first, if Depression is a long standing co-morbity and treat Depression first, if it is presenting less than 6 months.

My ADHD is making me focus on the incorrect positioning of that Blue Yeti mic (it is side-address, NOT end address) instead of the content...

Most kids are hyper/restless when they don't understand the schoolwork or too smart for it and they're bored. And if the kids are overwhelmed with TMI or too many activities/choices given to them at once. Parents must train their toddlers to focus on one thing at a time, step by step, day by day.
I just know that I need all my ducks in a row, organized, with the right music/room temperature/ambiance in order to get 100% focused on a difficult or unlikable tasks. But once in the zone, I'm completely honed into the activity.
