Mollyboy, you have to keep in mind that we had so many great songs coming out in the 70's. This was a great song when it came out, but every other song on the radio was great back then. I've said it before I'll say it again. The 70's had the most talent and the best music. No auto tune, no digital studio tricks, just talent.
Ah, 1965-1985.... the 20 years where you had basically EVERY band AT THEIR PRIME coming through your radios putting out one amazing hit after another, only to pick up their albums and find HIDDEN GEMS that hit harder and yet NOT played as often on the radio as you would think they would have been. Gotta say, that when you look at a simple 20 year run of the music industry in general, the number of solo artists, bands, albums and songs that became so ICONIC that they STILL shock you when you hear them for the first time decades later
I was 12 - sitting in the drivers seat of my mom’s car - my cousin in the passengers seat - Parked in the driveway ! Styx blasting !! Pretending to be driving and singing at the top of our lungs !!!!! GOOD TIMES !!!!
I was 12 (so about 1979) when I saw them in concert with The Baby's & another huge named band, but i cant remember who the 3rd one was, lol. Anyway, no parents, too much fun!!!
This song came out in '78. One reason it isn't more popular is just because the competition was fierce; there were several great rock bands and a lot of damn good ones in the 70's.
Oh he's gonna like this one. Can't wait to see it. Molly, you gotta hear Blue Collar Man, Come Sail Away, and Suite Maddam Blue which is a song about the birth and growing of the USA. Styx is a very diverse band with top quality musicians and singers. Mr Roboto is a one off and kinda weird although I thought it was awesome in my teen years.
Styx is a wonderous band who got some notoriety, but not nearly enough. Underrated by haters worshipped by fans. They mastered the art of mixing slow and fast in many of their songs, you are touched at the beginning enjoying good lyrics and by the end you are ROCKIN' OUT. This was a banger like you say.. peace and love to all the renegades. Here's on I am sure you will enjoy.....Styx - Too Much Time On My Hands
Good point on the slow and fast -- they really knew how to increase the pressure as they went along. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think any of them have such a hard transition as Renegade. This one just drops you in one moment from angel voices to rock thunder.
@@sourisvoleur4854 Styx can start a Ballad like Lady or Babe and by the end it's rockin' another example is Come Sail Away... Incredible mixes of slow/ballad and good rockin'.

The band has two separate styles depending on whether the guitarist Tommy Shaw wrote and sang the song (like this one) or it was written and sung by keyboardist Dennis DeYoung (who wrote the more romantic songs.) Tommy thought that Dennis’s songs were too “mushy” so he was a bit at odds with him. 😂 But they were all hits.

I can't believe it. You played Renegade by Styx. I grew up listening to this group and in fact this was favorite group. It made me cry. Thank you so much. Tommy Shaw was the vocalist and he was the guitarist along with James Young the other guitarist. Again thank you.
Yes Yes Yes!! I would love to see someone do a reaction for Styx’s Pieces of Eight, hint hint 😉 Actually the whole album is really good. Playlist worthy!!

Hi Mollyboy. I’m 62 years old and only recently discovered your channel. I’m enjoying your reaction videos so much! You’re listening to music I’ve enjoyed for decades! I’m having lots of fun watching you react to hearing them for the first time. Thanks for sharing your reaction videos
In 1978, Styx brought their "Pieces of Eight" tour to Toronto, Canada, and I happened to be working for the band that was going to open for them. I was already a fan, so I was excited to see them live for the first time. The opening act waits patiently with their gear while the headliners do their sound check. Their soundman asks for some vocals so he could get the levels and mix right. And then they opened their mouths with that incredible a Capella (singing without any instrumental backing) opening for Renegade. Our mouths dropped open as we came as close to hearing angels sing. They did a few more from different songs but I can tell you, that was one hell of an experience. Talk about the hairs on the back of your neck standing at attention! Great channel Molly Boy. The astonishment on your face that turns to pure joy while listening to the music of "my generation" (I'm 70 years old) is heartwarming. Ironically, I took one of my 3 daughters to a Styx show in 2013 and she got to experience their incredible talent. True, Dennis deYoung was long gone by then, but Larry Gowan is an incredible talent as well, and someone that had also grown up in the Toronto music scene.
Brother I went to high school in So Cal from 1975 - 1979 this is the soundtrack of my life, I could recommend 500 songs from then that would blow your mind 🤯

Our teacher alwys bought us a special lunch and we would jam for the last couple of hours before the break. The rest of the teachers just opened their doors and let everyone join who wanted to!! Awesome memories.
Styx actually remind me of Chicago. Those guys are one of those bands from the 70s that were just powerhouses; There was always a song of theirs in the top 40 pretty much at least a couple times a year of my youth. Styx were a paragon of what the best rock and roll Artists can do, doing what they do really well in the 70s: if you were worth your salt, you could also pull off the really good rock ballads as well. And since you had all this other excellence around you, you had to rise to the challenge yourself and make excellent music to compete. (See: benefits of meritocracy.) These guys are just some of the best. Great reaction!

Not only does it feature Tommy Shaw's killer vocals, but a VERY unique perspective of Ted Nugent's fingering on his guitar solo.
Late 70s bro. That sound you questioned was synthesizer. The lead guitarist was the lead singer on this song. The keyboard player also sang lead. This was a huge album at the time.
Crystal Ball, Snowblind, Too Much Time on My Hands... endless list. And you should check out Damn Yankees, which was a guitar supergroup with Ted Nugent, Jimmy Blades (Night Ranger), Tommy Shaw (Styx) and Michael Cartellone.
I remember driving around, tipping a few back, 16 years old and jamming to Renegade... the year was 1978. It's so great that your open to listen to our music
Just saw Styx and Foreigner in concert a few months ago. Great concert. Try Suite Madame Blue, Crystal Ball, Blue Collar Man, Grand Illusion, all great songs by Styx, one of my favorite bands ever.
Young grasshopper...you have been so deprived of great rock songs from the 70's and 80's. I remember all of them because I lived them back in those years. Renegade was definitely a banger song back in those days as well as many thousands of others. Keep on exploring young lad! 😎🍻❤️🤟
Song is from the album "Pieces of Eight". Almost all the songs on the album are bangers. So is the album before this one, The Grand Illusion. Classic Rock Gold!
In 1973, I was 10 years old, babysitting a year old baby for a few hours at the house of some friends of my family. The mom and dad told me I could watch tv. or play records on their stereo system, while they went to the hospital. This was when and where I heard my first Styx songs. They had 2 albums and I fell in love with their music. I'm a 61 year old woman, and I still enjoy so many of their songs - one of my favorite songs was a lesser known one, called I'm Ok, and I also like the song 'Fooling Yourself' quite a bit. Plus I love all their more popular songs too... Babe, Never Say Never, Come Sail Away...etc. BTW: The dad was getting a vasectomy. At that point in my life I didn't know what one was...until my mom explained it to me a few weeks later...lol What an era...lol... 10 years old babysitting a year old baby and at age 10, not having a clue about men parts and birth control methods. The Pill was still a hush hush topic back then too. I babysat for that couple a number of times, and one time, the mom came home, forgot to get milk and asked me to driver her Lincoln Continental to the small store 3 blocks away to get milk. I was, 10 years old LOL. She said she had a massive headache and the baby was asleep - and I could earn $2.00 in driving to the store and back. She told me that R was for Reverse and the shifter and D was for Drive...that the brake was on the left and the gas on the right. And away I went. . I got some looks as I pulled up to the store and went in and got milk...but no one said at thing and no one called the police. They just shrugged their shoulders. In Idaho, we can get our drivers licenses at age 14, so maybe they thought I Iooked like I was 14?
The noise in the solo is the amazing Dennis DeYoung on synthesizer. If it has keys, he's the one you want to play it. Whether it's straight up keyboards, or a pipe organ in I'm OK, or the accordion in Boat On The River.
I was so teased when the lame kids found out my favorite song was Boat On The River (10 yr olds can be so cruel hahaha) My music teacher thought I was cool😂
You can be assured that everyone over 40 watching this was holding their breath for the song change up😊

What I love about old music is that it goes on a journey. No predictable journey. Just keeps bringing in more bits of goodness!!😂❤
Guitars were Tommy Shaw and James JY Young. Tommy was lead vocals on this one.
Steeler Nation!! 🖤💛
Yes!!!
Come Sail Away, Grand Illusion and a hidden gem is Miss America. Love the channel 😁
I remember driving around, tipping a few back, 16 years old and jamming to Renegade... the year was 1978. It's so great that your open to listen to our music
Seen Styx give or take 7 or 8 times over the years. Never disappoints that's for sure.
Great band and a great song. Keep discovering and bringing me my old Music home to me.
Just saw Styx and Foreigner in concert a few months ago. Great concert. Try Suite Madame Blue, Crystal Ball, Blue Collar Man, Grand Illusion, all great songs by Styx, one of my favorite bands ever.
This group is super Uber talented
YAAAAASSSSSSS, sweet! You are reading my mind….I have STYX in my car all the time! THEY ROCK! You’re gonna love them all…promise!
This is a banger!🎶
I been waiting for this one, knew you'd love it!!!
This song and Riding the Storm out by REO and Back in Black ruled my stereo my Junior year.
Styx was my first favorite band that I didn’t hear my older siblings playing. I still love them!
You hit 0:39 this one right on the head! Great, great song Molly Boy!❤
Yet another great Chicago band. From back in the day when people could play their instruments and sing well.
My first time hearing them too. Thanks Mollyboy and those who suggested
Styx is still touring - they are madly successful and I've seen them 8 times!
Saw them in ‘74!! Incredible!🤘🔥
I’m so jealous! I LOVE this song. I’m 70, fyi 😊
BTW:
The dad was getting a vasectomy.
Definitely Pieces Eight.
I had forgotten how much I liked Styx. Thanks for playing it. It's a banger for sure
Styx has the best name band ever. Man this music makes me so happy.
the "YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" gets me every time!
Another 'sleeper' song from them is Queen of Spades. Thanks for reacting to such an awesome classic rock band!
